Another question about running old programs on new macs

I'm a little confused and was wondering if someone can help me out.
From what I've read I cannot find any options for me to run an old programs for OS with my intel-based MacBook. Just in case I've tried downloading a bunch of different things (OS 9.2.2 which won't run, sheepshaver which I can't figure out how to use even it it might work). IS there anything that I can do?

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
1. Buy an older PowerPC Mac used or refurbished as my FAQ* explains how to do:
http://www.macmaps.com/usedrefurbished.html
2. Contact the developer of the said software and ask a Mac OS X version be published of their software.
3. Politely ask Apple develop a virtualization program through AppleCare's Customer Relations department, http://www.apple.com/macosx/feedback/ and if you want a free developer account go to http://bugreporter.apple.com/ and submit it as an enhancement request.
4. Tell us what software you want to run that you found is 9 only, and maybe we can tell you an alternative that can open the same documents, play the same style game that is Mac OS X native, or will run under Windows or Linux on your Mac?

  • Advanced question for running DOS programs on a Mac.

    So what is a simple process on a Windows machine seems to be a challege on my new Mac.
    In summary I have several hard drives laying around that need to be checked for problems before they are used. There are lots of free DOS programs available for PCs that do just that. Many are provided directly by the hard drive manufacturers themselves (ie Segate SeaTools) and they are fantastic. Macs unfortunately can't run DOS programs (without hacks like rEFInd) and none of the manufacturers provide Mac compatible software. Looking on the internet everyone points me to Disk Utility to check drives, but compaired to something like SeaTools, Disk Utility is useless. I found Micromats TechTool Pro 6 which comes close to what I need except its expensive and has lots of features I don't need.
    I want to avoid installing windows in bootcamp or a VM just to do this one simple task. Very frustrating that it seems like im the only one wanting to do this with a Mac.

    Did some more research and figured out these are my options:
    -Find a mac alternative (few out there, most very bacic, or very expensive)
    -use rEFInd (which is in beta, and modifies OSX)
    -bootcamp (which doesnt allow BIOS access to select a dvd DOS program, so doesnt help. Also, mac doesnt use legacy usb and keyboard drivers so you cant use keyboard/mouse in most DOS programs)
    -Vmware
    So to me my best option was to use Vmware. Installed on a USB hard drive to save space and configured VMware bios to boot from selected .iso of a disk and it worked. Successfully ran SeaTools and because VMware emulates legacy mouse/keyboard it worked.
    One problem though. SeaTools for DOS doesnt work from USB sata adapter, and considering its a macbook air im out of luck.

  • How to run older program on newer Mac?

    I recently made the switch from Windows to Mac with a brand new Macbook Air. It's running OS X Yosemite 10.10. I'm a screenwriter and so a friend of mine gave me an older copy of Final Draft that was torrented and said it could be used on Lion and Mountain Lion. Every time I go to install it on my Air the Installer says it has to close and then re open then says its going to run a package to see if it can be installed on my computer then spits out an error saying I need to have a newer version of OS X but as far as I can tell I have the newest version. Anybody know a way around this or why it's doing this?

    Sorry. You're not going to get help here. You're also not going to get any sympathy for the fact that you're having problems running stolen software on your Mac.

    Hi people,
    I'm getting this error when I try to run a EJB:

    Somebody knows the reason or what should I do to fix it?

  • ANOTHER Question about my iMac G3. Mac OS X and RAM

    Hey, I have ANOTHER question about my iMac G3.
    I know that I'm supposed to have the latest firmware updates for my iMac G3 running OS 8.1, which I do, but I read some where these firmware updates could only be updated if you're running OS 9.2. Yet when I run the firmware updater, it says my firmware is up to date. I just wanted to make sure this was correct because I just ordered an OS X 10.2 CD today, and I don't want my mac to be "dead" when I install it.
    My next question is how much RAM can my mac hold. It's an iMac G3 with a 233 mhz processor, if that makes a differemce.
    Again, thanks to the people who have helped me with my first Mac.

    hi there--
    unfortunately you require system 9.1 or 9.2 for the required firmware update 1.2 for your computer http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117. so you'll have to install that if you want to install 10.2. it may work for you for a little while, but then you could possibly lose all your information. so i wouldn't advise attempting installing 10.2 without the correct firmware. • Yet another question about super raid - GS70

    Yes, another question about Super Raid...I recently picked up the cheapest model of the GS70 on newegg which comes with 1 mSata SSD...just a mediocre one if I remember reading correctly.  I'm interested in using MSI's Super Raid once my warranty is over with and have been reading a couple posts here:
    1. Walk through of how to reinstall OS
    --> https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=167198.msg1224063#msg1224063
    2. I'll need a Super Raid card with links to get some, for about $100 each
    --> https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=171722.msg1252847#msg1252847
    3. I can't get Super Raid unless it originally came with it?
    --> https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=171185.msg1249640#msg1249640
    So what's the bottom line? Would I still be able to enable super raid in the future or am I SOL since it didn't come with it originally?
    thanks!

    The GT70 CAN come with an adapter that has 2 (on the older, GT70 0NX models) or 3 (on newer GT70 20X models) sockets for mSATA drives. It's an optional part, that takes place of the primary SATA drive in the notebook, and physically has a different part that connects to the motherboard. If it doesn't come with the SuperRaid adapter, then it just has support for a single 2.5" SATA drive.
    The GS70 on the otherhand, has this built into the motherboard and there is no swapping it out for a normal 2.5" SATA drive. You can only use mSATA drives (on those ports). The GS70 is meant to be an ultrabook, and therefore does not have the same ability as the GT70 to house up to 2 full size 2.5" SATA drives.
    That's really the main difference here. Without physically seeing a GT70 to see how the SuperRaid adapter works, it's slightly difficult to explain.
    But in the end, I wouldn't worry about the SuperRaid....The GS70 should have support for Intel Raid Management Engine, in which case that's all you really need.

    In the TrueFalseQeustion class, why are there so many constructors? What is the purpose of setting some of the variables to default values?
    Thank you very much!!!

    } I don't understand why the assignment wants me to build a method in the MultpleChoiceQuestion class to store the potential answer choices, I can make the program display the potential answer choices by including them in the questionText as following in the QuizDriver class
    Question x;
    x = new MultipleChoiceQuestion("What is the color of the car\na.Red\nb.Green", "a. Red", 3);
    t.addQuestion(x); I don't know how to allow the client to construct the list of answer choices one at a time(add one potential answer choice by calling the addAsnwerChoices() method once)
    Here are a few original sentences of my assignment which describe what I should do with the MultipleChoiceQuestion class
    Using TrueFalseQuestion as a model, develop a new MultipleChoiceQuestion class that can be used to represent a problem where the user must select one of several answer choices (e.g., "Select answer (a), (b), (c), or (d)."). This new question type should have all of the same externally-visible functionality as TrueFalseQuestion, except that it must:
    maintain a list of potential answer choices
    provide a method that allows the client to construct the list of answer choices one at a time (i.e., the client should be able to call an addAnswerChoice() method to pass a new answer option to the MultipleChoiceQuestion.)
    display (as part of the question text) the list of answer choices with appropriate letters ("abcd" instead of "0123") I don't understand what these sentences mean.
    1. "Maintain a list of potential answer choices"-- this reminds me of the getPossibleAnswerChoice() method in the TrueFalseQuestion class
    public String[] getPossibleAnswerChoice ()
            String[] possibleAnswerChoice = {"true", "false"};
            return possibleAnswerChoice;
        }I wonder that if the potential answer choices I have to store in the MultipleChoiceQuestion class are only letters "a", "b", "c", "d", etc, or include the answer text coming after the letters(eg. a.Red, b.Green)
    2. "provide a method that allows the client to construct the list of answer choices one at a time". How do I achieve the functionality "one at a time"? Do I need to pass the input of the client (a potential answer choice) to the variable of the method which stores the list of potential answers?
    3. "display (as part of the question text) the list of answer choices with appropriate letters". My question here is that: When the client type in one possible answer, should I append it to the variable questionText? (So I use the questionText variable in the methods of the first and second steps)
    Thank you very much for your nice help!

  • Cannot run install program on new Dell inspiron

    Using Explorer, the default browser on my new computer, I went to the Mozilla.org site and clicked the link to download Firefox. A prompt appears at the bottom asking if I want to run the program, and I click "yes." The green status bar appears, gets to 61%, disappears, and another box appears asking if I want to allow Mozilla Corporation to make changes to my computer. I click "yes," the box closes, and nothing happens. I went through the install process by saving the file to my downloads instead of running it immediately; got the same result. I cannot get past this point to the Mozilla setup wizard to install the browser. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Download and save the full off-line installation package from here. <br />
    http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    Then close IE and start the installation.

  • Another question about gmail

    I just posted a question about adding gmail and it was answered.  Now, I have another question,  I added the new gmail account.  It shows in the mail preferences under accounts.  Incoming mail addressed to gmail comes to the Archive Box. But I still can't send mail by gmail because in the drop down menu on the email it only lists my other two accounts.  Gmail is not an option.  I highlighted gmail in the account list and it showed that as the account in use.  But, still there was no gmail option on the email form in the sender box.  How do I fix that?

    You need to look at and read over these very carefully.

  • Another question about adding music to iPhone

    Apologies for yet another question regarding adding music to an iPhone but I am completely stuck.
    I bought a new laptop in January (it runs windows 8). I've authorised it and synced my phone to it before. I've used it to add music before.
    Lately I've just been buying music directly from itunes on my phone but I wanted to add some music from my older collection that is on an external harddrive.
    I've gone through the process of syncing the phone again, which has wiped whatever was on there. I made sure I'd ticked on the "manually manage music" box.
    It's put all my purchased music back but it still will not let me drag and drop music from my external harddrive. When I hover over with the file it has "link" but it won't actually send the music to the phone.
    Is there a way for me to do this without putting music on to my itunes library? I don't like itunes and I definitely don't want to add the music to my laptop as it defeats the purpose of having an external harddrive! Sorry for such a long-winded explanation.

    Just to add... I've now tried adding music to the library (getting desperate here) and it's not letting me do that either. Just says 'link'.
    This is the most frustrating thing ever. Why are the simplest of tasks made so difficult? It seems like it only works if you buy the music from the iTunes store.

  • Just used migration assistant from one mac to another one.  When I restart the new mac, the old user boots up instead of my new user.  Have to log out then log in.

    Just got a new Imac.  I migrated from the old Imac.  When I boot the new Imac, the old user screen boots up.  I have to log out and then log into my new user on the new mac.  Whats up?
    Thanks.

    Thanks for your help. But the PowerBook has a Migration Assistant designed for the purpose of transfering files from the old Mac to the new Mac. The steps take me to the point where I'm instructed to restart the old Mac while holding down the "T" key. But nothing happens when I do that. It just restarts and the Migration Assistant on the new Mac still reads "waiting for old Mac to restart".
    There has to be a way to do this. I can't install the original applications on the PowerBook from scratch because they were meant to run on Classic. The PowerBook doesn't recognize any of the old Classic installation disks I have from previous Macs (Oddly, the PowerBook has capability to run Classic, but not the actual software-- and no Classic installation disk was provided, unlike the software provided for iBooks. And I can't install any of the System X upgrades because they need to recognize the original application already on the computer in order to upgrade.
    I just calculated that if I have to rebuy all the applications I need, I couldn't afford to do it (unless someone can-- or even wants to-- take the old versions off my hands to offset the cost of buying new ones).
    There must thousands of graphic designers like me who run a small business and can't afford to re-stock their entire software collection every time they upgrade to a new computer. Why would Apple diss the very people who have been supporting the company (actually keeping it alive) all these years? I don't think they would do that. I'll just have to keep looking for a solution.
