Another RS480M2-IL won't POST thread

Someone tell me I've missed something obvious!!!
I'm just putting together a new PC (HTPC actually), with an MSI RS480M2-IL motherboard (on board video etc), and it won't POST.
I'm now back to the mboard sitting on a stack of paper with CPU + fan, memory, the 2 power connectors, and power switch (off and old PC).
When the power is switched the CPU fan starts, and that's it, nothing on the monitor at all, it doesn't even power up.
There are no LED's on the mboard, and no speaker to beep that I can see.
I've built plenty of PC's in the past, and had lots of problems and always managed to sort it, but not this time!!!!
Any ideas what to try next?
Oh BTW I have tried the reset jumper for the bios as well.
Thanks
Mark

There are known and repeated problems with the Venice E3 core's memory controller and yours/ours and other motherboards.  Try your DIMM in all 4 slots for post test.  Some are reporting Slots 2 or 3 work for single DIMM.  You may need to try the radical CMOS clear procedure I and others use between tests when you get the black screen and no post.  To do the radical clear, pull the power plug, pop out the CMOS battery, and placed the CMOS jumper in discharge for 20 minutes.
E3 apparently also overheats due to not correctly dropping voltage (not what you'd want for HTPC).
The new Venice E6 cores are reported to fix the E3 bugs.  Winchesters also work fine, as I can attest.

  • Another K8N Neo 2 won't post thread!!

    Hi Everyone,
I've been reading all the threads regarding the old Neo 2 not posting problem ever since i got mine in October and it didn't post.
At first it worked sporadically, which was a pain, but bearable.  The one day it wouldnt start for love nor a good kicking, just a few seconds of fans and that's it.
I've tried 3 keyboards, 1 of which i went out and bought.  No joy.  I've tried 4 power supplies, admittedly 2 of which where never going to be powerful enough, but still no joy from the one in my sig, even when running 'barebone' just the graphics card, memory and CPU.
I took the board back to the shop, they tested it and it only went and worked!!!  This was during the period that it worked on and off though, and now it isnt working at all!!  All the other components work in other computers, so do you reckon its a dead board?

    wougle,
I'm doing my sherlock holmes bit
Maybe the components that weren't used in the shop
    1) PSU - At present prime culprit - is it possible to test it either with 2600m set up or at shop.

    Are they showing ok
    2) Memory - does it stay on long eanough for it to be memory.
    3) was it your CPU in Mobo at shop. If Yes then at present their in the working list.

  • (SOLVED) K8N SLI Platinum won't post with Saphire 5750

Hi everyone. Hope you all had a nice Xmas.
This is my first post on the forums.  I’m  from Portugal ,so I might write things that won’t make much sense to you but I´ll try to keep it simple.
I bought a Sapphire 5750 vapor-X for my kid's PC and I’m afraid I’m yet another one with the “black screen, no post” syndrome. I have tried the card on another system and it works fine.
    What I did:
    Remove old card (6800GT)
    Put new card in
    Reset  CMOS
Switch PC on… no image on screen.
The fan on the graphics card starts spinning, the blue lights are ON, but no dice. My HDD LED stays on, my CD+DVD drives LEDs keep flashing  but system  won’t  post, not  even show MSI logo.
If I remove new card and get my old one back in the PC, it will post first time.
I have spent Xmas reading forums and haven’t found anything but a lot of ppl with the same problem and no real solution for it.
Hope you guys can help .

I have another computer that it ran on fine using a PCIe 2.0 slot (Asrock 780g board), but my MSI K9A Platinum would not power that card. So you may need to replace your motherboard if it uses a PCIe 1.0 slot.

  • P67S-C43: Won't POST with two sticks of RAM

Hi, my new P67S-C43 has a peculiar problem: It won't POST with two sticks of RAM. I've tried both of my sticks (2 x 2GB G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3-1600 CL9 1.5V) individually in Slot 1 and the system POSTs fine. When I insert the second stick in any other slot, the system proceeds to restart unsuccessully a couple of times and then it will not POST. Only one blue LED is illuminated. When the system is in this state I have to reset the CMOS in order to POST successfully with a single stick of RAM again, which made the problem difficult to diagnose and very annoying to troubleshoot (lose BIOS settings after every attempt with the clear).
Any idea of when we'll see a new BIOS? Are any betas available? I'd like to see if this is a BIOS problem before RMAing it.
    Thanks.

Which BIOS do you now have? Current official is V1.5. It would possibly help to have a full listing of all the systems components. Work with the one RAM stick initially in the primary dimm slot, blue closest to CPU. Get the OS loaded, drivers, etc., then add the second stick in the other blue dimm slot later. I have a feeling the RAM is setting itself up wrong. Might try the manual settings of 1333 9 9 9 24 @ 1.50V's.
The BIOS was 1.5 out of the box but it's my understanding from another thread that there have been a slew of beta BIOSs released. I'm not going to load the OS until I get this straightened out. Also, both sticks would have the same settings with one stick or two installed. I fiddled with voltage, timings, etc but it still wouldn't work when I popped in the second stick. LIke I said, after every attempt with two sticks I have to clear CMOS or it won't work again with one stick. I'm hoping to try a newer BIOS before spending more hours on this, one setting at a time.
Also, I have a 2600K but the rest of the components are irrelevant. At one point I had everything but the CPU/fan, video card, and RAM unplugged and the mobo entirely out of the case. Still didn't work until there was only one stick.

Built many PCs but never had a problem like this.  Starting to think MB is bad.
    Built this in Dec 2008
    MSI P55-GD55
    A-DATA Gaming Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
    Intel Core i5-750

Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB
COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 Plus Cooler
2 weeks ago PC would do nothing at all after I turned off and then tried to restart.  Thought I had bad power supply, but it checked out. Cleared cmos  by removing battery and turned off oc genie and that seemed to cure problem.
Left PC on ever since.  Had to turn off yesterday to check unrelated network issue and when I tried to restart It won't post.   Just get 3 beeps.  No video.  Nothing.  Tried to clear cmos, switch memory sticks, only use one mem stick in slot 1 and I get nothing but 3 beeps.  Very unlikely that both sticks are bad.  Tried powering on from internal switch and got nothing but 3 beeps.  Beeps are less than 1 second in duration so I guess they are short beeps.
    Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.
If I have to RMA to MSI how long does it take to get replacement?  What do I have to send to MSI, all contents of retail box or just the board?

I am ready to toss this board and buy another unless I can get this working.
At the moment there is know certainty about the definate cause for your problem.  What makes you so sure that the board is the cause (and not your CPU (which hosts the memory controller, after all), faulty RAM sticks (have you tested every single stick of RAM you have in the first slot (check user manual) and cleared CMOS (with A/C power cable unplugged from PSU before each new start-up attempt)?).
A contact problem between CPU Pads and board socket pins could also cause this (please reseat CPU and heatsink).  Another possible cause is a short-circuit problem inside the case (test the board outside the case on a non-conducting surface).

  • Tales of Extreme Frustration: 890GXM-G65 won't POST

Purchased components to build new computer and the PC won't post for some unknown reason.  The fans come one and the 4 APS LEDS all light up but nothing further.
Tested the HD with my current machine and verified it functional via bios.  Tested PSU on my current machine as well and found it to be working.Took the memory back in exchange for 1.5v per the documentation.  Nothing.  Went to exchange the mobo and they get it to fire up right before my eyes.  Assuming the CPU is the issue I make the exchange.  Again, nada.  I go and return yet again and get a 3rd processor and am still getting nothing.  Tried plugging the pwr leaving just the CPU, not even memory expecting error tones from the piezo but of course nothing.  It posted at Fry's so I'm kind of out of things to try.
Saw posts online citing vcore issues but nothing really fitted what I'm experiencing especially when the solution is to flash the bios when I can't even post.
Need help. Nightmare build.  THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!
    Setup:
    MOBO = MSI 890GXM-G65
    CPU = AMD Phenom II x6 (1st & 2nd were 1090T, and the 3rd is 1075T)
    MEM = 2x2GB DDR3 1333 Corsair XMS3

Can you ask the obviously very kind servicemen at your store to update BIOS for you.
Hey thanks man that would be an idea I haven't thought of yet... moreover, I'd like to find out how I can do that myself.
Question:  How does one update the bios on a board that won't post?
Plan:  obtain a stick of super low end ram, get the thing to fire up (assuming its a voltage/vcore issue that's preventing the post), update then reassemble proper
Does someone know of another way to accomplish?

  • P45 MS-7516 worked great for 2 years, suddenly won't post.

    MB: P45 Diamond MS-7516 (v1.0)
    CPU: Intel Core2 Quad Q9550
RAM: Tried many types in differing slots.
    PS: Antec 500w
    Video: ATi HD4850
This setup worked great for close to two years, and today it suddenly won't POST. Immediately after pushing power button (most) all of the MB's LED indicators light, no beeps, no video output, but all fans spin. It stays like that until I turn off power supply.
Here's everything I've tried so far:
I switched out memory, tried one stick up through four in all configurations.
I checked power supply with DMM and all is correct.
    I tried 2nd power supply (375w).
I reset CMOS, the correct way, via battery and jumper.
    Triple checked all connections.
Removed MB from case and set on cardboard.
Reseated the CPU and tried a different heatsink.
The labels on the MB's LEDS are very hard to read. Can't really see which numbers line up with which lights. It looks like pretty much all of them are on.
    1 on and blue
    2 on and red
18-22 (top right) all on and blue
    4 on and red
9-16 (that whole 4 group thing) Each group has one Red on.
And there's a few more I'm leaving out. Basically they're all on.
I don't know if this is relevant, but immediately before this problem started (remember pc worked great for 2 years) I was booting up Linux off a Sandisk thumbdrive. Ran into some boot issues, hard reset, and then wouldn't reboot or even POST from power on.
There have been no power surges or electrical storms.
Judging from my process of elimination, I think it must be the CPU or MB. I'm hoping I don't need to replace both. Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Thanks, that makes perfect sense.
But given that this MB worked for so long with one PS, and just out of the blue stopped working, and that another PS (one which the store uses specifically to troubleshoot) was tried, and that all other components (RAM, VGA, CPU) have been replaced and the MB still has same behavior, it seems extremely likely that the MB is to blame. Am I wrong in that assumption?
I'm also assuming, from the lack of responses regarding the MB's diagnostic LEDs, that having them all lit is not a meaningful code. Is that assumption correct?
    Thanks all!

  • K8T Neo won't POST, nor will it upgrade

    Hey guys. I have a K8T Neo - Athlon64 3000+ - 1GB Crucial RAM (2 sticks) - Nvidia XFX 6600GT - 80GB WD Raptor (boot) - 250GB WD Caviar SATA - 2 DVD/RW - WinXP fully patched
Been running like a clock for about 2 years, till I decided to upgrade a little. I bought a 1GB stick of RAM to add to the existing 1GB, and to fill up all 3 slots. I also got another WD caviar SATA HD.
I was running 2 older IDE drives in a RAID config on the Promise 20378 (lower) chipset. I removed these and changed the BIOS setting to SATA instead of RAID for the Promise chipset, and plugged in the new WD Caviar. It was recognized in the boot sequence, but neither Windows, the WD disk tools, nor Partition Magic would recognize the drive.
Detaching and setting that aside, I installed the new RAM (in the correct configuration according to the manual.)
No more POST. The D-Bracket shows the "Early Chipset Initialization" and that is all. I moved the RAM sticks around, no results.
I now have the machine sitting in its original configuration, without the new RAM or HD. It won't POST. It either hangs in the "Early Chipset Initialization" stage, or it fires up for 2 seconds and then shuts right back off. Neither way will it get anything up on the screen.
Please help? Suggestions??? I have run through the troubleshooting guides, both on the MSI website & in the FAQs here on the forum.
    Thank you.

Will it fire if you remove the new stuff? You could have gone over what your PSU has power for.
Everything is out... I have a 420W power supply, and right now I am working on it with all of the new stuff out, as well as some of the old accessories (like a TV card) out. Just 2 HDs, 1 stick of RAM, and 2 CD/DVDs. I even pulled fresh power to it, using a large thick cord, from a different outlet from the rest of my PC stuff.

  • PCIe videocard won't post ftom first slot

I have an msi vt2d256e x800xl card and just today I rebooted it and now it won't post from the first pcie slot
I ripped all apart trying everything and swapping anything
the checkengine light on the back of the box said 1,3,4 green and 2 red meaning memory problems
finally I put a PCI vc in and it posted
so I started putting it back together one by one and no problems thill I get to the PCIe vc
won't post again(same lights). So I try the other slot and it posted fine
Now my question is ,do you think there is a problem with the board?
I just got it about a month ago
    the board is a neo4 sli 7100nmw
                                                Thanks,Paul

Hard to say, Posting with a PCI VGA card is somewhat inconclusive.
You'd have to try the card in another PC to see if the problem follows the card. And/or try another PCI-e card in your current configuration.

  • 790FX-GD70 Won't Post

I bought the 790FX-GD70 in January and I'm just now finishing the build (don't ask).
I waited to buy the CPU until last, so I got the X6 1090T. The current BIOS is 7577 1.0 and I have every intention of updating it to 1.C as soon as I can get to the BIOS, but no luck there. I have it bare bones right now and out of the case. Parts list:
790FX-GD70 BIOS ver 1.0 (I know, I need to update ASAP)
    Phenom II X6 1090T
    Corsair H50 CPU Cooler
Corsair Dominator 2GB DDR3 1033MHz (in first slot closest to CPU. The box says AMD Phenom II right on it. Grrr...)
    Corsair 850HX Power Supply
It's right here in front of me out of the case, lying on my desk.
The problem is, it won't post. This is what I get:
FF,d1,d2,d3,d5,d6,08, then it resets, FF,d1,d2,d3,d5,d6,08, reset, etc. etc.
All the CPU phase LEDs light, memory LEDs light, and the hard drive LED lights right before the board resets.
Any help would be awesome. I'm lost. Thanks.

    what vga you have?
have you tried to boot with barabone setup and mainboard out of the pc case?
    tried >>Clear CMOS Guide<< too?
power cable for the cpu is connected?
have you tried to reseat the cpu too and check for bent pins?
