Another snow leopard bug?

the day i installed it onto my macbook pro, i was unable to shutdown or restart my computer after several hours of use. i had to hold the power button to be able to shut down my computer.
what happened prior to this was:
- i installed 10.6
- thinking i hadn't installed everything, i opted to (re)install some of the things in the optional folder (i was disappointed i no longer had quicktime pro, which i discovered after the fact that it got shifted to the utilities folder)
- while installing these options i kept getting an error message relating to the file: CNQL1212_ClassicNotSeize.kext
- after the install completed, thinking something might be wrong, i did a fresh install of 10.6
- after several hours, i went to shut down my computer only to discover i couldn't
anyone else have the problem of not being able to shutdown or restart???

everything seems to be working fine now. it only happened the once.
when i clicked to shutdown or restart, nothing happened - as though the shutdown and restart buttons had no more functionality. no error message, no freeze, no black screen. i could have continued to use to my computer normally, i just wasn't able to turn it off without holding the power button down.

  • Posix error snow leopard bug

I guess this issue has been occuring since Leopard.  A drive goes bad and it needs to be reformatted but Disk Utility in Snow Leopard refuses to erase the drive and or partition it because of a posix error --  Cannot allocate memory.  This is a major problem if one wants to fix (zero) a drive.
I, fortunately, had my old powerpc desktop running Tiger and disk utility did what snow leopard didn't, it cleanly zeroed the same malfunctioning drive.
If any apple engineers are reading this, could we have a fix for this lingering bug?
    thanks

    Thank you.
Yes, I'm running into similar issues when enabling Stealth Firewall.

  • Photoshop CS4 Snow Leopard Bugs: Cursor Position & Grains

Currently running OSX Snow Leopard (10.6.1), and just installed the latest Adobe updates this morning (9.22.09).
There are two bugs in Ps CS4 I've encountered, one minor but aesthetically unpleasant, and the other major and disrupting:
The first bug occurs at random when Ps is extended to "Full Screen Mode with Menu Ba." As seen in the image at the following link, graininess occurs in Ps's canvas background, and wont disappear until the screen mode is toggled (pressing the "F" key three times): http://img.skitch.com/20090922-tyxk4dfrak4dtf2f4rg7fgyn59.jpg Again, not a major bug, but simply annoying to look at.
The second, more annoying bug, has to do with the cursor and selection tools. I could not determine when exactly this happens and how it goes away, but a few times throughout the day the selection cursor is a few pixels off. When either the lasso, magic wand, marquee or other similar tools are selected, the actual area from which Ps begins to select is about 10-15 pixels below the cursor position, see image in link for clarification: http://img.skitch.com/20090922-1jyqdtj34xw99ysq4gjxhxx57c.jpg
I hope this notice gets the bugs fixed. If you're experiencing similar Snow Leopard side-effects and can detect how and when they occur, please let me know. The canvas background pixelation, I can live with...but the cursor selection bug makes my day twice as difficult and slows my workflow down to a snail's pace.

Not sure about the graininess as I have never seen it but it seems to be the same fix as for the curser being off by 10 pixels. cycle though the screen modes with the F key. this has nothing to do with Snow Leopard as it is present in both Tiger and Leopard as well.
This bug is only present when you create a new doc in full screen mode. If you are a new convert to Mac from Windows you might want to use the application frame, this will give you the gray background without those two annoyances. You can find the application frame at the bottom of the Window menu. this is a new feature on the Mac version with CS4.

  • Another Snow Leopard question.

I currently run 10.5.6 on my iMac, having been deterred from upgrading by some of the comments about 10.5.7 and further deterred by the reaction to 10.5.8. I will buy Snow Leopard but I'm wondering if it will require me to install 10.5.7 and 8 beforehand or if anyone knows if Snow Leopard is likely to incorporate these upgrades as a matter of course. If it does, I'll wait a while to see the market reaction though I have learnt from experience that posts in these columns should not be viewed as negatively as they are sometimes presented.

    seventy one:
    (Good age, that is )
I got to 10.5.6 by a blind leap of faith
To a certain extent much of what we do involve an element of blind leaps of faith, even in the realm of computer technology. All computer systems are not identical, even with the same make and model, and the same version of software. However, there are certain practices which can help smooth the leap, or assure a softer landing. My recommendation is that you go ahead install 10.5.8. I suggest that you download the Mac OS X 10.5.8 Combo Update. Make sure you have a recent and reliable backup/clone. Then, to be sure you are not installing to a problem volume, boot from the install disk and Repair Disk. Once that is done, Repair Disk Permissions, install the update and Repair Disk Permissions, again.
That will give you a little breathing time before Snow Leopard. In addition, with the release of a new version of OS X it takes a little while for some of the initial wrinkles to be ironed out. With an updated version of Leopard you can wait that out comfortably.
    Good luck.

  • Snow Leopard Bugs

I just loaded Snow Leopard clean to my 2009 iMac; no time machine, no backup. Just CLEAN.
    Problems:
    (1) Safari takes 20 to 30 seconds to load Apple's home page, and other pages with RSS. Pages with no RSS and no QT animation load fine.
    (2) I have no other software loaded yet other than Apple's. From time to time, after boot, the Trash bin will have an empty Recovered Files folder. No big deals. But it is irritating.
I've tried emptying Safari's cache and resetting it and all that. Makes no difference.
    Any ideas?

    (1) Safari takes 20 to 30 seconds to load Apple's home page, and other pages with RSS. Pages with no RSS and no QT animation load fine.
I'm not seeing anything like that here. Try posting over on the [Getting Online and Networking forum|http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1343], and be ready with more details about your networking setup.
    (2) I have no other software loaded yet other than Apple's. From time to time, after boot, the Trash bin will have an empty Recovered Files folder. No big deals. But it is irritating.
This is normal. When any application leaves files in the temporary folder, those files get placed into a Recovered Files folder in the trash every time you log out. Applications should clean up after themselves, but many (even some Apple apps) don't do so appropriately.

  • Snow leopard bug with iweb black template

I installed Snow Leopard this weekend. When I went to add content to my website this am, I found that all my pages and entries on the black templates were unreadable. The fonts were ultra condensed so that letters and words were superimposed. I was able to fix them by reselecting the fonts. Just one more thing in my Vista-like Event Horizon involving Safari, Mail, all my fonts, two restores from time machine and an uninstall and then reinstall of my HP printer despite SLs dire warning of the consequences.

Delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder, repair disk permissions, reboot, launch iWeb and republish the site. See if that will make any changes. The black theme works for me in myTestPage .
Can you give us the URL so we can examine it first hand?

  • Yet another Snow Leopard Upgrade Query

I've bought upgrades before, like Windoze XP from 2000 - and whenever I had to wipe a disk or have a disk go bad, reinstalling XP has always meant crawling up to the attic and hunting for the Win 2000 install disk in order to install from the XP upgrade disk.
Is the Snow Leopard upgrade on a blank disk (say a hard drive failure, or a giant gorilla breaks into my house with this huge degausser) going to require me to hunt down the old leopard install disc? I see nothing on the apple site regarding this, yet lots of chances to pre-order the disks. I have the 5 seat family pack edition of Leopard, so $49 vs. $229 is an attractive difference. What if I keep a copy of the original leopard disc, as my original is rather scratched - is that acceptable?
Also, since of only used 2 of my 5 leopard installs, does that mean I can still install Snow Leopard on a total of 5 machines (3 future ones)?

While there are some discussions on this topic online
in other forums and blogs, some articles and a few
bits of gossip among a few facts, speculative dialog
is rather limited and the results unaccountable to fact.
The idea that someone could use a simple upgrade disc
if one should be available, and have it work to upgrade
all five computers running a previous version of OSX is
asking quite a bit; even if a new upgrade version may be
priced economically lower than previous OS X upgrades.
No way of knowing from our level, for sure, but there may
be an 'upgrade for the family pack' - you could try calling
Sales Support to see if they can find a part number for it
and you could ask & try to order that from Apple directly.
And pre-ordering has been happening, such as it is,
before the release date. There may be a part number
    for a family-pack update; or a family-pack upgrade.
Defining the terms of any agreement, you have to always
defer to the legal and almost obvious wording in the
software, online or in paper copies of the documentation.
Since I own no hardware capable of supporting the latest
OS X version, my interests aren't too much involved to be
concerned about these aspects of it at this time; a new
computer or certified Apple Store special deal of the later
vintage hardware may be the most suitable upgrade.
Due to the lack of suitable hardware, I declined an offer to
do some beta testing of the latest OS X versions. A non-
disclosure agreement usually is enough to keep those who
know details quiet about them; honesty is more than paper.
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • New Snow Leopard Bug

For some reason my iMac won't stay asleep. This is starting to bother me because my iMac is beside my bed and it wakes me up when I hear the hard drive spin back up. I don't use the software. I have all software and firmware updates installed for this drive. Also the WDsmartware, has been hidden by me through a western digital installation. • Snow leopard installation on another macbook

I bought snow leopard dvd last year and installed it on my macbook. I'm going to switch to another macbook next week, can I uninstall snow leopard on the first one and install it on the new one or do I have to buy another snow leopard dvd? Thank you.
    Andrea

Yes. You do not have to buy another DVD unless you intend to install on both computers. In this case you can get the 5-user Family license.

  • Snow Leopard iTunes 10.5 will not play multiple video tracks in QuickTime .MOV files

I recently discovered that Snow Leopard iTunes version 10.5 won't play multiple video tracks in a QuickTime .MOV file.
Both video tracks appear and play correctly when playing the file in:
    - QuickTime Player 10 or QuickTime Player 7.7 on the same Snow Leopard machine
    - iTunes 10.3.1 on another Snow Leopard machine
    - iTunes 10.5 on Leopard or Windows 7
So I think the problem is iTunes 10.5 on Snow Leopard (although I haven't been able to test iTunes 10.4).
First test file is two 640x480 video tracks side-by-side (total dimensions 1280x480):
    http://160.94.17.23/demo/two-video-tracks-1280x480.mov
All I see is the first (left) video track, and not the right one.  iTunes "Get Info" command incorrectly reports the video dimensions of the file as 640x480.
Second test file is two 640x480 video tracks played one after another (duration of 10 seconds each):
    http://160.94.17.23/demo/two-video-tracks-640x480.mov
All I see is the first video track, and although it reports the correct file duration (20 seconds), the second video track never appears -- it simply freezes on the final frame of the first video track for the last 10 seconds.
Anyone else see similar behavior?  Unless I'm missing something, I suppose I should submit this as a bug to Apple.

I have the same problem, i tried re-installing, converting it to AVC H264 but none seems to work so far

  • Snow Leopard Preview app will no longer opens/saves 'sgi' images

Now that i'm running Snow Leopard I an unable to open of save images through Preview as sgi format. Is this another Snow Leopard change or is something broken? Anyone else had this problem?

I have the same problem and discovered the 64bit version of preview is problematic with my .sgi files.
I did commmand-I on the preview app file and choosed (Open in 32bit mode).... it resolved the issue.
But still i don't get thumbnails in the finder or with quicklook... bugs..
    Hope it helps

  • Anyone upgrade to Snow Leopard and runs CS3 or CS4?

Hi all. I'm looking to upgrade my Mac from tiger to snow leopard, but I wanted to make sure there weren't any problems beforehand. Has anyone upgraded to Snow Leopard? Have you had any problems running CS3 or CS4 since?
    Thanks.

Works fine for me on a 2008 unibody MBP. Only a couple bugs that I can live -- neither affect workflow or CS4 functionality.
    A) As with Leopard, some programs have an issue with closing. About half the time when you close Ai or Dw the program closes fine -- then it tells you it crashed. A bit annoying, but I just go ahead and send the error report, dosent affect much, although if you've changed any preferences they might get lost. Adobe's prob gotten several hundred crash reports from me on that one :∫
    B) Occasionally when you switch from one app to another and you try to go back it only will switch only when you click the icon on the bottom -- otherwise the app you want will just switch back to the other app -- I think it's a snow leopard bug, but seems to affect Flash and AE. Very rarely however.
I've been using Snow Leopard w/ CS4 since release day for prob 14 hours a day 6 days a week and these are my observations.
Go for it dude, you'll love 10.6 -- Use CCC before that way if it's not functioning properly you can aways go back.
It should be noted, I have not tested any third party plug-ins yet. After Effects by itself 9.0.2 has no issues that I can tell.

  • License for Snow Leopard upgrade

I upgraded my Mac mini to Snow Leopard a few months ago by purchasing the $29 upgrade disk (I was previously running 10.5.8). I now want to upgrade my wife's MacBook, which is also running 10.5.8. Do I need to purchase another Snow Leopard disk?
While it may be possible to do the upgrade from the disk I already have, I don't want to violate any licensing agreements. I don't have either of the Macs or the SL disk in front of me right now, so I don't have access to the EULA. Just hoping I could get a quick answer so I know whether I need to stop by the Apple Store on the way home.
    Thanks!

Yes. Unless you purchase a Family license (up to 5 users) a single-user license is limited to one CPU at a time. For two computers it's cheaper to buy another copy of Snow Leopard than to purchase the Family Pack. For three to five computers the Family Pack is the best deal.

  • Airport express printing problem with Snow Leopard

I am no longer able to print to my shared printer after upgrading to Snow Leopard. I get a message that starts with "communication failure the computer is no longer able to communicate with your printer". My network consists of a dual-band Airport extreme and an Airport Express. The dual-band Airport Extreme creates the network and is connected to the internet. The printer (HP LaserJet 1012) is connected to the AirPort Express. The AirPort express joins the dual-band Airport extreme network for the sole purpose of turning the HP LaserJet 1012 into a shared wireless printer. Everything was working fine before the upgrade to Snow Leopard. When I connect the printer directly to my MAC via USB, it prints fine. I can "see" the printer fine through bonjour when it is connected to the AirPort express, but I get a failure whenever I try to print to it. I have tried plugging and unplugging the device. I have effectively redownloaded the print-driver by connecting the printer directly to my MAC. It sounds like a Snow Leopard bug. Any suggestions for a work-around? Thanks.

I upgraded to Snow Leopard and had difficulties connecting to my HP Photosmart 7150 printer through Airport Express. Apple setup found a 3rd party printer driver by Gutenprint, which I downloaded and the printer works. But like it did under Leopard. Under the 10.5 OS, a print command would send a wake up signal to the HP, which automatically turned off after a period of idleness, and then print. Under 10.6, there is no wake up and I need to manually activate the printer. I went to the HP web site hoping to find a "new" driver for 10.6 and HP has posted a message saying it does not and will not be providing print driver for 10.6. It then has a long list of HP devices that cannot or will not print with Snow Leopard. So those with no-printing issues should check your model against the HP driver listing. I believe this is a neat way for HP to force Mac users who upgrade or install 10.6 to buy a new printer for which HP has a 10.6 driver. At least I can print and the only inconvenience that I can see if the lack of that wake up signal. My wife says it won't hurt me if I have to get up and walk to the room with the printer to turn it on!

  • Restoring my System with Time Machine to a new HD without the Snow Leopard DVD

    Hi there,
I changed my HD in my MacBook Pro to a bigger one and then wanted to Restore the System via Time Machine onto that new HD. Sadly I dont have the Snow Leopard DVD that was coming with the MacBook. Though I have another Snow Leopard DVD, that I purchased earlier for my older Mac. Now the Problem:
When I try to Boot the Macbook Pro from the older Snow Leopard DVD it always freezes and says: "You have to restart your Macbook. Press the power button until it switches off and then press the button again". But iwill not boot from the DVD.
Is there another possibility to Restore my System from my Time Machine Backup to the new HD?
    Kind Regards

You can't use a machine specific OS X install disk with another model of Mac.
It has to do with hardware drivers being on one disk and not applicable to another machine, why you get the kernel panic.
Is there another possibility to Restore my System from my Time Machine Backup to the new HD?
No. You need the OS X install disk.
Choices depending on what your machine is:
1: If your machine with the missing OS X install disk originally came with 10.6.3 or later, call Apple for machine specific replacement disks, there will be a fee of course. That's the only ones that will work.
2: If your machine originally came with 10.6.2 or earlier, you can choose to buy the 10.6.3 retail disk from Apple online, however it contains no free iLife. It comes faster.
3: If your machine originally came with 10.0 - 10.6.2, and you want the free iLife, then order the machine specific versions from Apple, however it might take longer.
4: If your machine originally came with 10.5, and your now on 10.6.x via the 10.6.3 retail disk, you can extract the free iLife from the 10.5 disks using Pacifist from CharlesSoft if you don't want to buy iLife.
You will need this disk regardless in case you need to #18 Reinstall Just OS X or #20 Erase and Install OS X or perform #4-#6 repair proceedures:
Step by Step to fix your Mac
    Is there another possibility...
Yes, once you have gotten a new OS X install disk, consider making bootable clones.
It's software that can clone your entire OS X drive/partition (no Bootcamp or Filevaulted) to another external drive and you can easily hold the option key to boot from it.
