Another speed / disconnection issues thread

Hi all,
I'm getting quite frustrated with getting a problem on my line fixed, that's affecting both broadband and telephone service. This has been going on (on and off) since summer last year.
Using a BT Homehub 2, the connection started dropping quite frequently, and a noise appeared on the phone line - bad enough that I couldn't use it for calls as I couldn't hear what the other person was saying. After multiple telephone engineer visits (about 5 different engineers - it was an intermittent fault, so difficult to trace I believe) they narrowed it down to a section of overhead cable that was rubbing against a tree branch. It took a complaint to BT to actually get this section of cable replaced though. This takes us up to around November last year.
Since then we had a couple of months of reasonably stable service (the noise had all but disappeared and broadband was connected at a regular 2.5mbps). However recently the noise has returned on the phone line and the broadband issues have also come back (regular disconnects and low speed). Some days it disconnects every 10 minutes for a few hours, and some days maybe 5 times in the whole day.
The BT broadband technical support line ran a line test about a week ago and decided they needed to escalate the issue to a Level 2 team (whatever that means). They ran more tests and, following their script, decided that my Homehub was at fault. I didn't agree, but decided to humour them. I have a spare ADSL router, and have swapped the BT homehub out for that, with no resulting difference in connection speed or stability.
I'm currently connected at 576kbps. The ADSL router is connected directly to the test socket, and has been for the last 2 weeks. I have also tried swapping filters. Still no improvement. I called technical support this morning again for an update, and they decided that they wanted to try resetting my IP profile. When I asked them what this would achieve they said that it would fix my speed issue, my disconnection issue, and the noise on my telephone line.
Now this sounds a little bit ambitious to me - I don't see how a simple IP profile reset can fix all these issues, but I'm not a technical expert and so I'm coming to you for advice. Does this sound like a reasonable course of action to you? My view is that there is still a fault somewhere on the line or in the exchange, but they are currently refusing to send out an engineer to run tests from this end, and are telling me I need to wait up to 4 days for the IP profile reset to take effect before they will consider sending one out.
Sorry for the long post - any help or advice much appreciated. Here's some noise stats from the router (not a BT one at the moment, but as I said, it doesn't seem to make any difference which router I use).

Thanks for the quick reply.
I have re-connected the Homehub to the test socket now. The downstream rate seems to have gone way up (this is the first time I've seen a rate this high since I first connected the Homehub to the test socket about two weeks ago). Just goes to show how much speed the connection loses when using internal wiring - as I said, I used to get about 2.5mbps - but that's a different issue.
My disconnection / speed issue is frustratingly intermittent, as swapping between the two different routers hasn't made any difference over the last week, with downstream rates of 1mbps or less, but now that you've asked me to do it, typically it now looks much better. Going on my past experience though it won't hold this rate for very long.

  • Yet another HH5 disconnect issue

I'm experiencing a lot of LCP termination requests and its very annoying to say the least !
I've read all the threads and the only solution appears to be to fork out on an aftermarket router, hardly a good start to my fibre experience !
I did PM a mod on here a couple of weeks ago but got no response.
Here are some stats for what it's worth, if anyone can shed some light on my issues it would be much appreciated but I fully expect to hear its the HH5 issue that's the cause, thanks in advance

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Its not the best situation and I to was a little annoyed with all the hh5 issues.
However it did me a favour it the long run as those unlocked modems are great little things.
With out the HH5 having all the issues I would never of known about them. It was only through the good people on here they point me in the right direction!

  • It's time for another G5 startup issue thread!

    Folks -
I'd like to think that I'm not entirely mac-tarded, but I figured that I would see if anyone out there had seen this before I take Mr. G5 in for repair.
I have a Power Mac G5 DP 2.7GHz, with 2GB of RAM. It WAS running OS 10.4.9. At my place of business, it was unplugged and set aside, with a new Mac Pro taking its place. Today, I plugged it with the intent of erasing and reinstalling everything. When the computer is plugged in, the front LED comes on and stays solidly lit. The system does not respond when the power button is pressed. I've tried different power cables, and I've also removed all but 512MB of the RAM, and the same thing happens. I've reseated the video card, still no go. I've reset the PMU and, again, nothing. Am I looking at a busted power supply?

Ditto Tom's remarks,. You should replace the battery before worrying about anything else.
    Instructions are here.

  • WAG120N - Frequent Internet Disconnection Issue

I have bought a Linksys WAG120N few days back & after i got it , i also updated it to the newest firmware from the Linksys site. The Firmware version for my product is , 1.00.12 Annex A.
But i am getting a  frequent internet disconnection after installing the Router/Modem.I am not a newbie in this.I have done my CCNP with full marks & currently working in IBM India & i have enough knowledge on how to configure Routers.
I have done the Flashing in the correct process & after Flashing , i did a 30-30-30 Reset as explained in this forum somewhere but the issue is still existing.
I am listing below what i have done so far. :-
    1) After getting the Router , i have updated to the newest firmware & Hard-Resetted the Router as explained in this forum.
    2) Then i configured the modem with the values from my ISP.I have done it both manually & also tried the Linksys Setup wizard that came on the CD with the Product and the SETUP WIZARD HAS MY ISP ON THE LIST as well.
    3) I got the net connected after configuring but only for some time. After that , i am constantly getting disconnected from the Internet no matter what if i use the Wired or the Wireless devices to access the Internet.I tried setting the Router with both  wireless Security enabled & disabled. No luck in either cases.Almost all of the time i get a disconnection when the DSL Link is Steady on the WAG120N.So, this should not be a Line problem. Also i can access the Net with my ISP provided Modem. No problems at all.
    4) I tried uninstalling the Anti-Virus & the Internet Security program i use which is Symantec Norton Internet Security 2010.No luck.
    5) I have Formatted & did a Clean Install of Windows 7 X64 & Windows XP SP3 & tried running the Router on a freshly installed operating system with no other software installed.I tried different Machines , Different Operating Systems , Different Lan Ports. No luck.
    6) I deactivated Windows default Firewall & every Power Saving functions of my OS.No luck.
    7) Linksys suggested me to visit the Service Center & get a replacement.I did visit the Linksys Authorized Service Center & got a new WAG120N & brought that to my home.I had to pay around 20 USD Taxi Fare as the Service Center is at the remotest part of my city.I wish if Linksys had a Pick-Up & Drop facility which nearly every big companies offer in my place.
    8) The new WAG120N did not change anything. The disconnection issue is still existing.
    9) There is absolutely NO problem in my ADSL line.I am using a 512kbps ADSL connection & when i use the CHEAPEST Wi-Fi ADSL Modem which has been given  by my ISP , i can access Internet just fine , no problems at all either in Wired or the Wireless. So, in this case The Linksys ADSL Router is at fault.
    10) I can see the ADSL line Stats with my 20 USD worth of Huawei ( ISP provided ) Modem but the 150 USD worth of Cisco/Linksys WAG120N does not support showing the ADSL Line stats ( or at least the Firmware doesn't support it ) which is unbelievable for a company of caliber like Cisco.
The two most important things every Modem at least should display are :-
    1 ) SNR Margin
    2 ) Attenuation
These two are absolutely a Must-Have features if you want to see how good your ADSL connection is & i am surprised to see that my cheapest ISP modem does have these but a Cisco product does not. !!!!!!!!
I have called the Linksys support again & they told me that they are Escalating  my case to their 2nd Level.
I got a response from their Level 2 Support Person & he asked me to provide information about my case & i had sent him a reply 2 days ago but no reply from him.
And I am NOT the only person with this problem.I do not know Linksys knows this or not but there are several Linksys users who are using this model & are facing the exact same issues as me.
Here are some of them & they have been posted on this community itself :-
    1) http://homecommunity.cisco.com/t5/Cable-and-DSL/Wag120n-problem/td-p/300397
    2) http://homecommunity.cisco.com/t5/Cable-and-DSL/WAG120N-keeps-disconnected-from-internet/m-p/330870/...
Tell me Sir , what should i do ? Should i sell it & get another brand or Linksys is going to help me to resolve the problem ? I am extremely sorry to say that i feel regretted that i invested my hard earned money into this which just does not want to work at all.I am too much frustrated & not going to buy any Cisco product if my problem does not get solved because i can not bother the disconnection problem as i need to stay connected all the time for my job & also for my personal reasons. It is a shame that i had to pack my Linksys up on the shelves & have to use the cheapest quality Chinese ( No offense ) Modem because at least the connection does not drop here & I can use it for what it is meant to be.
I will be expecting a quick reply from you people & would also hope that you will be able to solve the problem. Also i think the problem is not the Router but the Firmware itself is faulty but i am not sure about that because this is my first Cisco product & frankly speaking I am very much disappointed with it.I would very much like to experience a Cisco product because i thought it is an World Class product in the business. So, please help me resolve this problem.Either Linksys should help me resolve the problem and get me an working product or i would want to get my money back.Thank You.
(Mod note: Edited for guideline compliance.)

Yes but I think Linksys should give me another one which is working right ? Why should i invest in another Router as i just bought it & its already too pricey here.
I need an ADSL Wi-Fi Modem Router & there is only three models avilable here. One is this one which i'm using , WAG120N & the other two are  WAG160N & WAG320N & both of them costs more than triple than that of WAG120N.And no one is going to give me a replacement here.I can get the replacement but the same Router.I can not upgrade it without having to buy a whole new router which costs thrice than my current one.
So, i would be highly oblized if Linksys can give me a replacement because only they can replace it with another model but Linksys India customer Care is only suggesting me that they can issue a replacement for the same model & can not give any other model.
I sent my concern to the 2nd Level Technicians but have not received any reply.Feeling helpless at the moment.
My posts are edited & most important parts are being deleted. Please do not edit my post. All i am wanting to get a suggestion for my problem.I do not want to bother you with my problems but the communities are meant mainly for that purpose so that we can help & support each other.
    Thank you.

  • Router disconnection issues - only on weekdays

Sky sent me a new Router last week in order to fix the disconnection issues I've been having. I'm having the same problems as I did with my old router. Between 9 am to 6 pm (only on weekdays) - The light is Amber (static, not blinking) and I have to reboot to fix it. It disconnects after a few minutes and the only way to fix it is to reboot is. I've tried other channels 1, 6, 11 for 2 weeks now and even plugged it into the test/BT socket. Nothing seems to fix the problem. Connection speed is decent, but the internet always becomes slow, then disconnects as time decays. I live in Alderley Edge. I don't have these problems on Saturdays and Sundays or anything before 9 am on weekdays.  Here are some of the saved log files. Jan 1 00:00:07 syslog: BusyBox v1.17.2

If this is only happening on weekdays between 9 and 6pm it is very likely REIN interference. This could be from a factory, school or business that closes at the weekend. The only way to get it fixed is to get Sky to send out a REIN trained engineer and as they have to do this through BTO, it is more than difficult. This could probably be fixed by fitting an RF3 filter, which should be done by BTO but many do themselves.

  • Wifi disconnect issue w new Mac

I bought a new Mac about a week ago.  Right away I started experiencing wifi disconnect issues.  I called customer support line and they had me reset the eprom.  I don't recall the key sequence now. The problem went away for a week but has now returned.  Is this a hardware quality issue?

right my friend, you know this is not an uncommon issue with mac, all my macs have the same issue (macbook, mac pro, mac mini and older imac), i disconnect the wifi and reconnect to sole the issue. it depends alot on what you have thats goign on around you, if there is a lot of wireless networks in your area then this might cause the issue. i improved this problem using a time machine and set the wireless to 5ghz only - it helped. i also bought an airport express to strengthen the network and touchwood this is a rare problem for me now!
try moving the modem around in case it this - ensure its not on the floor or touching the floor, there are many tips for improving modem connections look on youtube
however the sequence for this is on

  • How to improve spreadsheet speed when single-threaded VBA is the bottleneck.

My brother works with massive Excel spreadsheets and needs to speed them up. Gigabytes in size and often with a million rows and many sheets within the workbook. He's already refined the sheets to take advantage of Excel's multi-thread recalculation and
seen significant improvements, but he's hit a stumbling block. He uses extensive VBA code to aid clarity, but the VB engine is single-threaded, and these relatively simple functions can be called millions of times. Some functions are trivial (e.g. conversion
functions) and just for clarity and easily unwound (at the expense of clarity), some could be unwound but that would make the spreadsheets much more complex, and others could not be unwound.
He's aware of http://www.analystcave.com/excel-vba-multithreading-tool/ and similar tools but they don't help as the granularity is insufficiently fine.
So what can he do? A search shows requests for multi-threaded VBA going back over a decade.
    qts

    Hi,
    >> The VB engine is single-threaded, and these relatively simple functions can be called millions of times.
    The Office Object Model is
Single-Threaded Apartments, if the performance bottleneck is the Excel Object Model operation, the multiple-thread will not improve the performance significantly.
    >> How to improve spreadsheet speed when single-threaded VBA is the bottleneck.
The performance optimization should be based on the business. Since I’m not familiar with your business, so I can only give you some general suggestions from the technical perspective. According to your description, the size of the spreadsheet had reached
Gigabytes and data volume is about 1 million rows. If so, I will suggest you storing the data to SQL Server and then use the analysis tools (e.g. Power Pivot).
Create a memory-efficient Data Model using Excel 2013
    and the Power Pivot add-in
    As
ryguy72 suggested, you can also leverage some other third party data processing tool
    according to your business requirement.
    Regards,
    Jeffrey

  • MACbook Pro/Bluetooth?Disconnect issues with an Apple mouse and keyboard

    Well Folks-
The disconnect issue I have with my Macbook Pro using a wireless Apple Keyboard and mouse is BACK.    I wiped the hard drive clean and I reinstalled and I updated the O.S. system including purchasiing Lion via the ineternet one by one and the disconnect issue has retuned on Day 4.    What else is there left to do?   Anyone?

    Hi....
Might be corrupted Bluetooth preferences (.plist)
    Go to /Library/Preferences
Move the com.apple.Bluetooth.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash.
See if that helped. You may need to re, "pair" your devices and the Mac OS X will re geneate a new .plist file for you.
Make sure the batteries are fresh also.

    1. Install Oracle XE 11G
    2. Install Oracle Client (http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/windows/downloads/index-101290.html)
When I go in the ODBC administrator, I can only see a MS SQL server driver. No Oracle driver at all.
I assume there are manual configurations to be done to get the Oracle driver in the ODBC administrator, but I do not know how to process.
    Could someone please help me?
    Thank you very much.
    Michel

  • Having speed drop issue.

    Hi,
I am having a speed drop issue since about this Saturday, in the night time and I dont see what the problem is?. The connection is being tested with ethernet cable straight to the HH3 and I have nothing else running in the background, no updates on the PC and all consoles are shutdown etc.. does anyone know why this is because I have never had this issue before and you will notice the speed drop downstream of about 2MB missing in the synch speed test, all tests I do I get the same results in the 22.6MB range Downstream and the uploadstream is always the same result at 2.26MB:-

    Thanks guys for the replys.
@sjtp. Yes mate I agree maybe I should not be so concerned about the speed issue seen as though I do have a prity solid good connection for everything, its just a little annoying I am losing over 2MB somewhere, some how.
@curiousfellow. I have done just that m8ty and found channel 3 seems to be the best for me. I do get upto 300mbps on devices and no drop. I have ran through them all and noted down speeds, traces (bbc.co.uk) and pings to speedtest.net site and channel 3 is doing me justice it seems, its just the over 2MB difference that is bugging me out.
Can you see though guys, in my test it says 25.3MB to my modem but to my PC using ethernet to my HH3 I am gettting 22.6MB, I am losing quite alot, but why is the big question???, it is really annoying me, its not as though I am using long ethernet cables to connect to my HH3 or to my PC they are just normal length cables, actually also they are Cat 6 not 5 so there top notch ethernet cables, gold as well, I didched the BT ones for better cables!!!!. One time when I was first connected to Infinity, 6 months back I was getting around 27000kbps to my PC but that gradually went down so I went along with that cause others connected to Infinity in my area and I was one of the first houses to connect so I expected a drop but now over time it seems to be gradually getting lower and lower to my frustration!!!.

  • Server Disconnect issue

    Hi,
I'm getting this mesage from my server:
A server you are using is no longer available. Do you want to continue trying to contact it?
Click OK to continue trying to contact the server (server name)
Click Disconnect to break the connection. If you disconnect you may lose changes you've saved and any applications you have opened from the server may stop working.
This is a semi-frequent occurrence. Also, we are using a utility called AdmitMac Browser to connect to ur server.
If anyone has this utility and/or gets this disconnect message I would appreciate some input and any way to resolve the issue.
    Thanks,
    Bob L.
    Powermac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Here is an update - none of these things really worked long term - the issues returned. I switched to Bing for a while which seemed to help but I missed some of the search results from Google.
I cross referenced a search with the disconnect issue and VPN (which I use for work) and found that some had to adjust the MTU in the System Preferences>Network>Advanced under the Hardware tab. Normally it is set for 1500 but I dropped it down to 1400 and it worked better and then finally down to 1300 and haven't had the disconnect issue with Google searches on Safari.
I'll continue to monitor it and if I have any issues I will report back.

  • Another Speed issues thread

I have been with infinity about a month now and thought it was time to sort out my speed.
I performed a speed test about 2 hours ago, then restarted my HH and just done another - they are about the same.  Done using a wired connection.
When the engineer installed, he said his tests were coming back at the full 40/10.
Download speedachieved during the test was - 15020 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 12000-38710 Kbps .
    Additional Information:
IP Profile for your line is -38710 Kbps
Upload speed achieved during the test was - 8338 Kbps
    Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 10000 Kbps
Does anyone have any suggestions?  Submit a support ticket?
    Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestions - here goes!
Because of that ping test, I did a speed test to the Milton Keynes server....

  • Yet another speed issue posting

    Dear BT Bods,
I don't know why having subscribed BT Infinity on the promise of better speed and stability that I now find niether to be the case, and beginning to regret ever buying it.
So to cut the chase, and save your time and mine, I am a senior architect working for the core network of a very large UK and global operator, so spare me the script and the brush overs.
I live in Greenford, postal code area UB6 8xx.
The service is painfully slow, and utter rubbish when it comes to streaming anything, and that's nothing to say of the 75Mb/25Mb speed check I did prior to ordering the line.
To cut a very long story short: I have just paid my first bill, and unless the is sorted immediately, then I am going to formally write to you to disconnect the service, and I don't care what the Ts&Cs say - we can always tango in court if it comes to that. I will not be bullied into a 1-year (dis)service.

Probably worth running the speedtest at http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/ and after the test choose ‘Further Diagnostics’ and post the speeds and the profiles that this gives.  The mods will want to see this anyway when they get time to process your issue.
I assume you are running over ethernet, not wireless?  You could try ruling out HomeHub issues by making a direct PPPoE connection from your computer to the modem (user: [email protected], password: bt will work).
Check the telephone ciruit has not been star wired: with extensions coming off junction boxes between the incoming telephone line feed and the master socket.  That's a fairly common mistake than can lead to instability.
Don't forget that the service guarantees for domestic broadband are very different from those expected for the core network of a very large UK and global operator.  However, for most people Infinity does provide a fast and very stable connection.

  • Unfortunately another speed issue

II have had infiinity installed on the 26th April.
For the first 10 days i had a profile of 77.4mb down and 20 up getting speeds steadily at this
on the 11th day, it dropped to 65.1md down and 20mb up was getting close to this a fair drop but i had been estimated to get 62.1 so still good.
1 week lated it dropped to 52.99 down and 20 up but on on speed test only getting 8 up
today it has dropped again to 45.18mb down.
I appreciate that it can fluctuate but my brother just had it installed from the same cabinet and he is further away and is getting a steady 64.15mb down. i am no more than 250m cabel length from the cabinet
can some one help its still alot better than the 0.5mb i was getting on adsl but its a fair drop for no reason, the only thing that i can think of is i was one of the first to get it installed from my cabinet now there is over 70 done.
    Please help Mods
    Thanks

Try a factory reset of the Home Hub 3. It's known problem, and may take more than 5 factory resets.
There are some funny issues in this are with the Home Hub 3. I do think it is worth doing this just to make sure that the Home Hub 3 is not the issue.
Kami666 - you mentioned that there is another line in your property. That line will almost certainly be in the same twisted pair bundle that the line that you are having issue with is. What is running on the other line?
Have you tried taking the face plate off of the master socket and using the connection directly? Does   this change the sync rate in any way?

  • Yet Another Slow DSL Issue - Speed No Better Than Dialup?

I consider myself fairly computer savvy (as I work with them as a profession), but must admit that Internet Connectivity is not my forte...
I currently subscribe to the Hi Speed DSL Enhanced - lately, the speed has degraded to not much better than dialup. I have had this service for several years - nothing has changed on my end hardware-wise, so this event is not assumed to be from my end.
    I am running:
Westell 6100 Modem (Transcever Rev 7.2.3.0/Software Version 4.04.03.00)
NetGear RangeMax Duo Wireless N-Router #WNDR3300
    (2) computers are hooked up:
    (1) XP - hardwired directly to the Westell modem
    (1) Win7 - hooked up via wireless
Both computers are running latest version of OS, IE and all software is up to date.
Both computers use Kaspersky Internet Security (internet speed the same whether it is ON or OFF)
Absolutely NO Maleware/Spyware or Viruses on either computer
I reboot the modem several times/day - with no result in increased speed
    (2) phones installed in home - both with appropriate filters installed
My 1st resort was to call support - I can tell you that will be the LAST time I utilize that 'service'  I have come to the end of my rope with waiting extended periods of time, only to be connected with a foreign country, with a poor connection, with an operator that barely speaks english, only to have them read thru a script telling me to do ridicuously stupid things like 'reboot the modem' (no kidding) or swap my hardwire CAT cable from my computer to modem end-for-end?
Next resort was this forum - infinitely more helpful!
    Ran a Transceiver Stats Check as a baseline - Speed (Down-Up) was a crappy 96 Kbits/sec by 448 Kbits/sec
Then I tried a couple suggestions from this forum - my new Transceiver Stats:
    Transceiver Statistics
    Transceiver Revision:
    7.2.3.0
    Vendor ID Code:
    4
    Line Mode:
    G.DMT Mode
    Data Path:
    Interleaved
    Transceiver Information
    Downstream Path
    Upstream Path
    DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec)
    608
    448
    Margin (dB)
    8.0
    13.0
    Line Attenuation (dB)
    63.5
    31.5
    Transmit Power (dBm)
    14.7
    11.9
    HUGE improvement eh?
One thing I did notice when attempting to check for newer version of modem firmware - when trying to update from web it gave me a 'Cannot Connect to Server Error'?
Speed is noticeably increased - but is it still where it should be?
If not, what other fixes should I attempt?
And finally, why is it that every time the weather gets even slightly inclement (sky clouds over, rain, thunderstorm, etc) our DSL goes off entirely?
Thanx for all your help in advance!

Can you fill us in a bit on what you did to improve the synch speed on the modem? Did you find some advice around here to connect the modem to your NID or did you investigate for damage to the home wiring? Your line should be running at a higher speed, which for what you seem to have is 1184kbps down, 448kbps up.
Do you also have voice service with Verizon? If so, how is that, especially during storms? Getting any noise on it? It could be possible if the line is not having issues due to corrosion, somewhere along the line shielding could be missing, and in comes a storm CRC'ing the line out of service.
