Another Sync Question - Desperate!

I bought a 32 g ipod touch from ebay. My problem is I can't synch ANYTHING. Itunes will recognize the ipod and show me a list of songs and applications that came with the ipod. But it just won't sync anything to it from my PC and itunes. I have tried to sync some pictures (from my PC) and applications that I got from itunes (yes, I am doing it the right way) and it say's it is syncing but when I look for the application or pictures (including podcasts) there is NOTHING there. I have no idea what to do next. I even tried to deauthorize the computer and the authorize it but it still won't work. Can anyone PLEASE help me? All software on my PC (windows vista) and ipod touch are current.

Yes, it will delete what's on the iPod but since you did not purchase them, no worries. You can sync your own stuff onto it.

  • Yet another syncing question...

Hello. My wife and I have two separate accounts on the same computer, and I have set iCal to sync our calendars via .Mac. I was wondering what settings I should use in each account for syncing. I currently have the sync set to "automatic" in both accounts, but when, for example, I add an item to my calendar, it is not updating in her iCal. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

I have the same setup as yourself and have not had any problems syncing iCal. I have the following setting on each account (using the same .mac account)
System Prefernces > Internet & Network > .Mac - go to sync tab and make sure Syncronize with .Mac is checked & that iCal is selected for both accounts. Also check that the frequency is the same (Such as everyday) - it could be a timing difference.
In iCal > preferences > General - make sure that syncronize using .mac is selected at bottom of page (cannot remember if this gets automatically selected by doing the 1st step or not).
Once verified that all settings are correct, I would add an event to your iCal and manually sync with .Mac - switch over to your wifes account and manually sync with .mac - hopefully that does the trick
    Good Luck

  • FCP Sound Syncing Question

    Hey Everyone,
I have an audio syncing question for you. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I am cutting in FCP. I logged and captured my footage and with timecode breaks, etc. the tape was cut up, and I was left with eight files, let's call them Footage1-Footage8. I have completed my cut of the piece using the in-camera audio that was linked to the video on the DV tape that I imported. Our sound guy in the field used a DAT recorder to record the production audio and apparently captured the timecode to the audio files, so that it matches the video (i.e. the DAT recorder and our cameras - DVX-100s had synced timecode during the shoot). The DVD he gave me has 20 audio files as .wav, let's call them Audio1-Audio20. My question is, now that I have finished my cut, I would like to replace the current audio tracks with the production audio. How can I sync the audio with the video and replace it in what I've cut. Or perhaps I can't, in which case - how can I sync them up and THEN cut, but I'd really rather have to not do that, lol!
    Thanks for your advice!

Sorry about the long winded post, though.
I guess my real question, summarized is - is there a way to sync separately recorded production audio (that has timecode) with the footage that I shot (that has the same timecode as the audio, but also has in camera audio that accompanies the video track - I would imagine I can just "cut" the extra audio tracks, however).
I'm at my bay trying to figure this out, and I've got nothing, and the people I work for don't want to spring for that bwf2xml program you were talking about What's the emote for pulling one's hair out?

  • Another newb question: multiple virtual servers

Hi, I have yet another ignorant question. I have several unrelated web projects that I am working on, and I would like to be able to set up a virtual server for each one for testing purposes, such as: http://project1, http://project2, http://project3. Can someone tell me if this is doable, and if there are any tutorials/resources on this for someone who has 0 experience running a web serer? Sorry for being so ignorant!

    Yes, it is doable.
You can setup virtual server either by IP or by name.
If you have one IP, and want to set them up by name (ex. http://project1, http://project2, http://project3) you can do so easily with this type of configuration:
    <virtual-server>
        <name>mydomain</name>
        <http-listener-name>http-listener-1</http-listener-name>
        <host>*.mydomain.com</host>
        <document-root>/www/domain</document-root>
      </virtual-server>
      <virtual-server>
        <name>myotherdomain</name>
        <http-listener-name>http-listener-1</http-listener-name>
        <host>*.myotherdomain.com</host>
        <document-root>/www/myotherdomain</document-root>
      </virtual-server>
....The important part here is that
    a) all virtual servers share the same HTTP listener
    b) which virtual server serves the request depends on the $HOST request header send by the client. Sun Web Server does the matching for you. It will match $HOST vs. the virtual server's host attribute. Depending on which site you connect to the right virtual server will be used.
    c) if the $HOST request header does not match any of the virtual servers, then the default virtual server defined in the HTTP listener will be used.
To create a virtual server, use the Admin GUI, access the configuration, and then add new virtual server. Or use the following CLI command.
wadm> create-virtual-server --config=myconfig --http-listener-name=http-listener-1 --document-root=/www/docs/myserver.com --host-pattern=myserver.com --log-file=../logs/myserver.com-error_logs myserverHost pattern will be used for matching. Some of this elements might be optional.
Hope that helps. And keep the questions coming :D

  • ITunes could not sync information to the iPod "...." because another sync session was already running.

Normally, syncing my iPod Touch is no problem. However, last time I tried to sync, the process hung up and even after half an hour the progress bar would not finish. I ended up having to force quit iTunes. Now when I try to sync I get 2 messages: the first says "iTunes could not back up the iPod "......" because a session could not be started with the iPod." as soon as I close that message another appears: "iTunes could not sync information to the iPod "......." because another sync session was already running."
There seems to be a half finished sync file saved somewhere and a new one cannot be started. However, I can't continue the partial one either so I'm stuck.
Other than that my iPod Touch 4 is operating normally. Syncing with Mac Book Pro.
How do I fix this problem?

    WHat do yo meanby rebooting?
Is is a reset like defined in the users guide:
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

When I plug my iPhone into my iMac via USB I can choose to "back up to this computer".  On another sync to my iMac, can I choose to " back up to the iCloud"?  This way I could restore all my info and settings from either source.  Is this possible?

On the phone, under Settings > iCloud you can select to turn iCloud ON or OFF.
One iTunes, it senses that toggle and if you had selected iCloud it will say backup to iCloud. Here you can change the toggle to backup to computer and click "Apply" prior to syncing.
I do both for good measure. I backup to computer and then after i disengage the device from the computer, I set the iCloud toggle back to ON and then perform the iCloud backup over wifi.
I found that using iTunes and saying to backup to iCloud isn't always successful in the "last backed up" time and thus I do it separately.

  • Another simple questions

    Hello friends:
Another simple question: I need to learn things about Oracle on my desktop.
My machine runs Windows 98. Oracle has some desktop product of its Database Line?
    For example: Oracle Personal?
And Oracle Lite? What's the main difference between Oracle Personal and

    1. I didn't know the answer to your first question, but I googled it and it says the item is the in-call audio boost.

  • Another Library Sync Question

Hi. A slight variation on an often asked question - but one I haven't found asked elsewhere on the forums:
So, my old computer died and I don't have a backup of my iPhone contents. I'm trying to sync to a new instance of iTunes on my new laptop.
I have my mp3 collection on an exteral hard drive, so I can just rebuild the collection on my iPhone if it comes to it.
The thing is, my mp3 collection is up in the 50,000's and I want to transfer the same 10,000ish to my iPhone out of it ... if possible without starting from scratch.
So the question is, is it possible to get itunes to recognize that the songs on the iPhone are actually in it's library - but only a subset of the library needs syncing?
    Thanks!

I didn't find any other free ones, and Tuneranger is discontinued and doesn't work right anyway.  I resorted to using itunes on the mac mini and the option to show files not in it's library to do a manual sync.  I did not try rsync on the w8 machine to push files over because I was worried it would mess up the database files.

  • IPhone synced with another library..."Erase and Sync" question

I helped someone transfer from an older iPhone to an iPhone 6 and did an encrypted backup on my laptop and then restored that backup to their new phone.
When they took the phone home and tried to sync their library with it they got the following message:
"The iPhone ... is synced with another iTunes library on ...  Do you want to erase this iPhone and sync with this iTunes library?"
I understand what iTunes is referring to but what does "Erase and Sync" actually do?  Does it just erase any media i.e., songs, apps and videos and then resyncs them from the new library or does it completely wipe the phone and start from scratch?
    Thanks...

When you say erased, you mean almost like a restore is done to factory settings instead of just the media being erased?
I ask because the older phone is no longer available and they want to preserve their photos, etc.
Can I backup the phone on their computer, select erase and sync and then restore from that backup?

  • Yet another photo question -- better to stream or sync?

I plan to purchase an ATV this weekend and need help choosing between the 40 and 160 models. Though I've read dozens of posts, I'm still confused whether streaming or syncing photos will work best for me. My understanding is that I will only need the 40GB if I stream (ignoring other HD uses).
My photo setup: I currently have about 10,000 pix stored on a NAS drive and add to them weekly. My itunes runs on a PC (sorry) and I manage photos with Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.(I do not have Photoshop Elements). Network is hardwire 100MB.
    My goals:
    1. To view my pix on ATV with the least additional workflow relative to my current habit of downloading and managing images in Lightroom (i.e. need to transfer or rename files to view them in ATV, etc.)
    2. To have the best possible viewing performance (i.e. no lag, easy to find pix, etc.)
    3. Spend as little as possible (i.e. no new software, 40HDD)
How does streaming compare to syncing given my needs?
    What size drive?
Thanks in advance for the help. Sorry if the answer is obvious.
    Ken

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
In most cases setting up your itunes as a syncing or primary library is a better option, it gives you much more functionality. What you should remember is that even in the role as a primary library you do not need to sync all your content as you have the option with a primary library of syncing or streaming your content.
This doesn't apply to photos though, so if you set itunes up as a primary library you must sync your photos, if you set it up as a secondary library you can only stream them.
Question to ask yourself is how many of the photos will you want on the tv, I have about 14,000 photos but only have about 4,500 on the tv. Many of my photos were taken on digital cameras as far back as 1995 when photo file size was quite small hence I have about 4 GB of photos on the tv.
I sync very little else and 4 of my 5 tv's are 40 GB and the other tv doesn't really have anything different on. You do use a little space for temporary storage of purchases and rentals you make via the tv, but I rarely ever have more than 10 GB of such content at any one time.

  • Yet another transfer/sync question...

    I've authorized my new laptop.
I know how to transfer "purchased" songs to it.
I CAN NOT access original hard drive which also holds songs burned from CD (but most of my library is on the iPod as well).
Q: Will connecting iPod to the new laptop, sync its song list (including the non-purchased songs) TO the new lap?
    Thanks

    NO.
To copy songs from an iPod to a computer, you need 3rd party software. Search this forum for a very informative post by Zevoneer on the topic.

  • Another calendar sync question.

Hi, I have Mac, Macbook, Ipad and Iphone. They all share photos via icloud but I just cant find a way to make them share calendars in any way. I've read various threads but am getting nowhere. If anyone could help (in easy steps!) I'd be very grateful,

  • IPod Touch (yet another) syncing problem contacts, address book

I have a new 2nd gen Touch 8g. I am trying to sync to my MacBook Pro. Would like to sync all my contacts and calendar info from my old Palm, but that is not my question today. I am unable to sync my Address Book and iCal information to Contacts and Calendar on the Touch. Specifics:
    - OS X is 10.5.6
    - iTunes is 8.1, recently updated
    - iTouch software is 2.2.1, recently updated
    - Address Book is 4.1.1
    - iCal is 3.0.6
I can "sync" using iTunes. It backs up the Touch. It syncs the music. It doesn't sync the Address Book or Contacts properly.
    History:
    - At first, I set it to sync the Address Book and Contacts (not Calendar and iCal). It would go through the sync process until "Updating Contacts with..." It would hang there overnight. This happened when there were 200+ contacts in Address Book on the Mac but none on the Touch. I cancelled after overnight hours and found none on the Touch.
    - Deleted all Address Book contacts. Now there were none on either Mac or Touch. Still would spin the "Updating Contacts with..." for hours.
    - Set iTunes to sync both Address Book and iCal. Added 1 simple contact in Address Book. Added 1 event in iCal. Synced. The sync completed but nothing was transferred between the Mac and the Touch.
    - Added 1 contact in Contacts on Touch and 1 event in Calendar on Touch. Synced. Each still had 1 contact, 1 event, but not the same ones.
    - Set iTunes to replace the information on the iPod (one time). The sync completed, and erased the contact and calendar event on the Touch, and put the 1 iCal event onto the Touch (yea!) but not the contact from Address Book (boo!).
    - Tried multiple more times. I can add a calendar event on the Touch, but it never appears on iCal on the Mac. I can add a contact on the Touch or in Address Book on the Mac, but the two never sync up to show on the other.
    Other details:
    - I don't use Google Contacts or Calendar
    - I don't use MobileMe (or really know what it is yet)
    - I did use iSync to try to sync all my Palm info (not successfully), but stopped trying and reset the sync history, just in case.
    - I don't use USB hubs, and I do the sync with just the Touch attached via the cable it came with directly into the MacBook Pro.
    - I've read hundreds of posts here and elsewhere. I've restarted programs multiple times. I've updated software. I've tried following the advice of all the posts I could, even if they weren't precisely what I was experiencing.
Does anyone have any brilliant ideas as to what I should try next? I bought this thing to replace my Palm as my PDA, but it won't be any good unless I can sync the darn thing. I've been working on this for almost 3 days straight and am going bug eyed reading all the info on the web. ANY help would be appreciated!
    Thanks!

I managed to get the sync to work after much shutting down and restarting, of programs and the computer. I cleared the iSync history just in case. I closed programs, etc. Eventually, it just worked and has continued to do so ever since. It is not slow, but rather quick.
    All is well.
Now, the conversion from Palm is another story.....

  • Log file sync question

Metalink note 34592.1 has been mentioned several times in this forum as well as elsewhere, notably here
    http://christianbilien.wordpress.com/2008/02/12/the-%E2%80%9Clog-file-sync%E2%80%9D-wait-event-is-not-always-spent-waiting-for-an-io/
The question I have relates to the stated breakdown of 'log file sync' wait event:
    1. Wakeup LGWR if idle
    2. LGWR gathers the redo to be written and issue the I/O
    3. Time for the log write I/O to complete
    4. LGWR I/O post processing
    5. LGWR posting the foreground/user session that the write has completed
    6. Foreground/user session wakeup
Since the note says that the system 'read write' statistic includes steps 2 and 3, the suggestion is that the difference between it and 'log file sync' is due to CPU related work on steps 1, 4, 5 and 6 (or on waiting on the CPU run queue).
Christian's article, quoted above, theorises about 'CPU storms' and the Metalink note also suggests that steps 5 and 6 could be costly.
However, my understanding of how LGWR works is that if it is already in the process of writing out one set of blocks (let us say associated with a commit of transaction 'X' amongst others) at the time a another transaction (call it transaction 'Y') commits, then LGWR will not commence the write of the commit for transaction 'Y' until the I/Os associated with the commit of transaction 'X' complete.
So, if I have an average 'redo write' time of, say, 12ms and a 'log file sync' time of, say 34ms (yes, of course these are real numbers :-)) then I would have thought that this 22ms delay was due at least partly to LGWR 'falling behind' in it's work.
Nonetheless, it seems to me that this extra delay could only be a maximum of 12ms so this still leaves 10ms (34 - 12 -12) that can only be accounted for by CPU usage.
Clearly, my analsys contains a lot of conjecture, hence this note.
Can anybody point me in the direction of some facts?

Can anybody point me in the direction of some facts? It depends on what you mean by facts - presumably only the people who wrote the code know what really happens, the rest of us have to guess.
You're right about point 1 in the MOS note: it should include "or wait for current lgwr write and posts to complete".
This means, of course, that your session could see its "log file sync" taking twice the "redo write time" because it posted lgwr just after lgwr has started to write - so you have to wait two write and post cycles. Generally the statistical effects will reduce this extreme case.
You've been pointed to the two best bits of advice on the internet: As Kevin points out, if you have lgwr posting a lot of processes in one go it may stall as they wake up, so the batch of waiting processes has to wait extra time; and as Riyaj points out - there's always dtrace (et al.) if you want to see what's really happening. (Tanel has some similar notes, I think, on LFS).
If you're stuck with Oracle diagnostics only then:
redo size / redo synch writes for sessions will tell you the typical "commit size"
redo size + redo wastage / redo writes for lgwr will tell you the typical redo write size
If you have a significant number of small processes "commit sizes" per write (more than CPU count, say) then you may be looking at Kevin's storm.
Watch out for a small number of sessions with large commit sizes running in parallel with a large number of sessions with small commit sizes - this could make all the "small" processes run at the speed of the "large" processes.
It's always worth looking at the event histogram for the critical wait events to see if their patterns offer any insights.
    Regards
    Jonathan Lewis
