Another sync victim

Ok, I know that having 5 macs syncing is a bit of a strain given today's system (actually, it's down to 4 macs ... two desktops and two laptops; but with an iphone and an ipod touch thrown into the mix). I've restored functionality to all except for one laptop.
I have even taken the step of creating a brand new user account, and then registering it. The result, sadly is the dreaded ".mac sync error A failure occurred while synchronizing the .Mac Sync Client" since it's a brand new user, dorking with the /Library files of this user would seem like it ought to be unnecessary (I had the same issue with my own account, which is why I created a new temporary account". For whatever it's worth, the console message was:

It would be nice to be able to sync this mac as well as the others.
If anyone from Apple is reading, an RFE to add the ability to use the web interface to create calendars would be nice as well.

Have you tried resetting sync data? Instructions here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1497
Yes, I know it's a new user account, but it might be that you have the registration of the same computer hanging around in MobileMe. In any case, it's worth a shot.
* I just noticed that the referenced article is to overwrite MobileMe with data from the Mac. You need to overwrite data on the Mac with that from MobileMe, so make sure the arrow is pointing the OPPOSITE direction to the instructions.

  • ITunes could not sync information to the iPod "...." because another sync session was already running.

Normally, syncing my iPod Touch is no problem. However, last time I tried to sync, the process hung up and even after half an hour the progress bar would not finish. I ended up having to force quit iTunes. Now when I try to sync I get 2 messages: the first says "iTunes could not back up the iPod "......" because a session could not be started with the iPod." as soon as I close that message another appears: "iTunes could not sync information to the iPod "......." because another sync session was already running."
There seems to be a half finished sync file saved somewhere and a new one cannot be started. However, I can't continue the partial one either so I'm stuck.
Other than that my iPod Touch 4 is operating normally. Syncing with Mac Book Pro.
How do I fix this problem?

    WHat do yo meanby rebooting?
Is is a reset like defined in the users guide:
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

  • HT1386 When I plug my iPhone into my iMac via USB I can choose to "back up to this computer".  On another sync to my iMac, can I choose to " back up to the iCloud"?  This way I could restore all my info and settings from either source.  Is this possible?

When I plug my iPhone into my iMac via USB I can choose to "back up to this computer".  On another sync to my iMac, can I choose to " back up to the iCloud"?  This way I could restore all my info and settings from either source.  Is this possible?

On the phone, under Settings > iCloud you can select to turn iCloud ON or OFF.
One iTunes, it senses that toggle and if you had selected iCloud it will say backup to iCloud. Here you can change the toggle to backup to computer and click "Apply" prior to syncing.
I do both for good measure. I backup to computer and then after i disengage the device from the computer, I set the iCloud toggle back to ON and then perform the iCloud backup over wifi.
I found that using iTunes and saying to backup to iCloud isn't always successful in the "last backed up" time and thus I do it separately.

  • IPod Touch (yet another) syncing problem contacts, address book

I have a new 2nd gen Touch 8g. I am trying to sync to my MacBook Pro. Would like to sync all my contacts and calendar info from my old Palm, but that is not my question today. I am unable to sync my Address Book and iCal information to Contacts and Calendar on the Touch. Specifics:
    - OS X is 10.5.6
    - iTunes is 8.1, recently updated
    - iTouch software is 2.2.1, recently updated
    - Address Book is 4.1.1
    - iCal is 3.0.6
I can "sync" using iTunes. It backs up the Touch. It syncs the music. It doesn't sync the Address Book or Contacts properly.
    History:
    - At first, I set it to sync the Address Book and Contacts (not Calendar and iCal). It would go through the sync process until "Updating Contacts with..." It would hang there overnight. This happened when there were 200+ contacts in Address Book on the Mac but none on the Touch. I cancelled after overnight hours and found none on the Touch.
    - Deleted all Address Book contacts. Now there were none on either Mac or Touch. Still would spin the "Updating Contacts with..." for hours.
    - Set iTunes to sync both Address Book and iCal. Added 1 simple contact in Address Book. Added 1 event in iCal. Synced. The sync completed but nothing was transferred between the Mac and the Touch.
    - Added 1 contact in Contacts on Touch and 1 event in Calendar on Touch. Synced. Each still had 1 contact, 1 event, but not the same ones.
    - Set iTunes to replace the information on the iPod (one time). The sync completed, and erased the contact and calendar event on the Touch, and put the 1 iCal event onto the Touch (yea!) but not the contact from Address Book (boo!).
    - Tried multiple more times. I can add a calendar event on the Touch, but it never appears on iCal on the Mac. I can add a contact on the Touch or in Address Book on the Mac, but the two never sync up to show on the other.
    Other details:
    - I don't use Google Contacts or Calendar
    - I don't use MobileMe (or really know what it is yet)
    - I did use iSync to try to sync all my Palm info (not successfully), but stopped trying and reset the sync history, just in case.
    - I don't use USB hubs, and I do the sync with just the Touch attached via the cable it came with directly into the MacBook Pro.
    - I've read hundreds of posts here and elsewhere. I've restarted programs multiple times. I've updated software. I've tried following the advice of all the posts I could, even if they weren't precisely what I was experiencing.
Does anyone have any brilliant ideas as to what I should try next? I bought this thing to replace my Palm as my PDA, but it won't be any good unless I can sync the darn thing. I've been working on this for almost 3 days straight and am going bug eyed reading all the info on the web. ANY help would be appreciated!
    Thanks!

I managed to get the sync to work after much shutting down and restarting, of programs and the computer. I cleared the iSync history just in case. I closed programs, etc. Eventually, it just worked and has continued to do so ever since. It is not slow, but rather quick.
    All is well.
Now, the conversion from Palm is another story.....

  • Yet Another Syncing Complaint (when are you going to get it right, Apple?)

I have to say, syncing my phone with itunes is the most miserably frustrating techno-process in my life at the moment.
About to step out for lunch, I thought it'd be nice to grab a new audio book to accompany my sandwich and I to the park. I found a title and had it on my hard drive in under 90 seconds -- an impressively frictionless acquisition.
But then came time to go from computer to phone.
I click sync. Message: "Syncing will remove 30 applications including "Around Me" and others from your phone." Umm, why? Why 30? Why not all? Why any at all? No indication given. Okay, I don't care about the apps -- just the book for now -- so let's ignore the app's. I uncheck the 'Sync Apps' box. Message: "Not syncing your apps will remove all applications and their data from your iPhone." Are you <edited by host> kidding me? Where is the sanity in that? All I want you to do is LEAVE MY APPS ALONE. Instead, my options are lose 30, or lose all of them. Granted, there are probably ways to get them back after losing them, but all I want to do is go to lunch with my new book, not sit here and think long-term syncing strategy.
This is one of many examples of the absurd inflexibility of the iTunes<->iPhone relationship.
Another is the incessant backups that take 20 minutes. All I want to do is put a 200mb audio file on my phone and go to lunch. That should take less time than it took to download the file, not nearly two orders of magnitude more (after downloading the book, it took nearly 45 minutes to get my phone back to a usable state). Not only does the phone get backed up, but I notice that the syncing process includes transferring files that were ALREADY ON THE PHONE back to the phone.
Seriously, Apple? How is it that you can be so good at user experience EVERYWHERE ELSE and <edited by host> so hard at it here?
I'd say get a grip, but I'm not sure that's the message I want to send.
P.S. The fact that I'm this frustrated is obviously an indication of how otherwise invested I am in your products. It is indeed a love-hate relationship.

From the description I would assume you normally connect your iPod at home, but you made the purchase at work managed to connect to a different library that has the same content. Have you recently had to rebuild the library following a crash?
Apple have designed iTunes to associate the iPhone with a single library. When you connect it to a different library iTunes will want to erase all apps and media content (except the built-in apps) and replace them with stuff from the local libray. This happens even if you have the iPhone in manually manage mode and is different from the behaviour of earlier iPod models.
Alternatively you could have used the iTunes app on the iPhone to make your purchase, connecting to local wi-fi if necessary to download larger files. I often do this to acquire podcasts before leaving home/work just in case syncing takes longer than usual for some reason.
Alternatively, if my original guess was correct and you want to be able to update your iPhone from work, home, anywhere else you happen to be, it can be done with a portable clone of your library. See this thread:

  • Another sync Q. Trouble with 2 macs syncing

I had two separate icals with very similar calendars and I was able to get them to exchange info but I usually got a conflict warning that I told it to ignore.
I thought I could start fresh so I deleted most of the calendars from my powerbook then synced the eMac to make sure everything was up to date (I sync manually) then I tried syncing the powerbook and nada nothing zip.
Is there a way to import my eMac ical (everything) to my powerbook?
    thank you
I hope this is an easy fix for a quick solved star
    --fingers crossed

Well I don't know what happened but I erased both calendars and started over.
Now I can add things to the laptop then have the eMac sync them and visa-versa.

  • Can you please help with yet "another" Sync problem?

I have recently changed from windows xp. I have a new computer with windows 7 and I loaded Itunes 10. There have been nothing but problems with my 5th gen nano since I have changed to my new computer.
I am unable to sync new songs; In the device section, if I click on
MUSIC; I get an error; "are you sure you want to sync music? all existing content on the Ipod will be removed and replaced with songs and playlists from your Itunes library.
It has been frustrating, because I would like to add my playlists and sync automatically and for some reason, I am not able to. Thank you for any light you may be able to shed on this situation; Tawney.

  • Another Sync Question - Desperate!

I bought a 32 g ipod touch from ebay. My problem is I can't synch ANYTHING. Itunes will recognize the ipod and show me a list of songs and applications that came with the ipod. But it just won't sync anything to it from my PC and itunes. I have tried to sync some pictures (from my PC) and applications that I got from itunes (yes, I am doing it the right way) and it say's it is syncing but when I look for the application or pictures (including podcasts) there is NOTHING there. I have no idea what to do next. I even tried to deauthorize the computer and the authorize it but it still won't work. Can anyone PLEASE help me? All software on my PC (windows vista) and ipod touch are current.

Yes, it will delete what's on the iPod but since you did not purchase them, no worries. You can sync your own stuff onto it.

  • Yet another Sync Group stuck "Processing"

I wish there was a way to fix this problem myself or to report the issue directly to someone who can reset the process, but the only way I know to fix this problem is to report it on this forum and wait until a MS engineer resets it.
So, here is the information about the sync that is stuck processing. Note that it has been in this state for more than two months! The customer was supposed to be monitoring the data, but just reported the issue to me.

  • How to Reinstate Another Sync Service on Curve After BBDM Removed

    Hi there,
I need to reinstall the Google Sync software on my Curve 8330.  I have removed the BBDM from my Mac but am not able to install the Google Sync software on the Curve, probably because the Curve still thinks the BBDM sync is still enabled.  How do I remove the BB sync from the Curve?  I need to be able to synchronise "on the go" not at a computer, hence the removal of the BBDM software.
Guidance much appreciated.  Thanks in advance for same.

  • Yet another syncing question...

Hello. My wife and I have two separate accounts on the same computer, and I have set iCal to sync our calendars via .Mac. I was wondering what settings I should use in each account for syncing. I currently have the sync set to "automatic" in both accounts, but when, for example, I add an item to my calendar, it is not updating in her iCal. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

I have the same setup as yourself and have not had any problems syncing iCal. I have the following setting on each account (using the same .mac account)
System Prefernces > Internet & Network > .Mac - go to sync tab and make sure Syncronize with .Mac is checked & that iCal is selected for both accounts. Also check that the frequency is the same (Such as everyday) - it could be a timing difference.
In iCal > preferences > General - make sure that syncronize using .mac is selected at bottom of page (cannot remember if this gets automatically selected by doing the 1st step or not).
Once verified that all settings are correct, I would add an event to your iCal and manually sync with .Mac - switch over to your wifes account and manually sync with .mac - hopefully that does the trick
    Good Luck

  • Another Syncing Problem

I just got my new replacement 30GB Video Ipod after some issues with no sound. Now, I'm having issues with syncing my Ipod. When I connect it to my computer, it does the automatic syncing but only puts 16 songs out of 1367 that I have on Itunes. When I try to do it again, the only difference I see is that the status at the top shows that I have less than the 1367 songs I do have. But it always puts those 16 songs back on the Ipod. I had recently updated Itunes with the latest update a couple weeks ago and I think that may be the problem. I'm going to call Apple Support tomorrow but thought I'd post something to see if anyone else is having this problem.

    Anyone?

  • Another Sync problem

Help. I have a 30G ipod. I accidently erased all my songs when I downloaded 3 new ones on my work computer. Lost videos & 600 songs. When I connect to my home computer I see all my songs but when I try to sync it says ipod synced after about 3 seconds & none of my stuff syncs over. I still only have my 2 purchased songs & nothing from the screen syncs to the ipod??
    Thanks for any help
    Andy

I'm getting a similar problem mate. Synced 4 albums this morning with no problems, now when I try to sync some more new music it Says Syncing for a few seconds then says complete? Tried all but full restore as im worried it wont sync my files back. Plenty of free space on the iPod, strange as it will let me remove files from the iPod?!?!? Help please... 80gb Classic BTW
    Thanks

  • Another Syncing Issue

iTunes kept randomly deleting my songs, so completing a system restore on my computer finally worked (actually worth it, it was that big of a pet peeve ). Anyway, after re-installing iTunes, iTunes told me that my iPod wasn't synced with this particular library. I can add songs by dragging them onto the iPod icon on the left sidebar, however, I'm not able to sync the iPod or be able to right-click the song and click "Send to/iPod". I can't sync it from the file menu, so what do I have to do?

It's a second gen iPod if it has control buttons on it, a clip on the back, and no display.
The 1st and 2nd gen iPod shuffles do not have a sync mode, like all the other iPods. That's why you cannot select Sync from the menu bar, and why there is no Sync button on the iTunes window (when you have the shuffle selected in the sidebar). It is meant to be a simple device.
Here's the best way to do what you want and make it convenient.
Create a new playlist; call it +shuffle Playlist+ or whatever you want. Add the songs you want on the shuffle to this playlist. You don't have keep the total size below the capacity of the shuffle. You can use the right-click +Add to Playlist+ command if you don't want to drag and drop to the playlist. The advantage here is that you don't have to have the shuffle connected when you create or update this playlist, or wait for iTunes to update the shuffle after every change.
Connect the iPod shuffle. Select its name in the iTunes sidebar under DEVICES. Over to the right, go to the Contents tab (where the songs on the shuffle are shown). At the bottom of the list, where it says +Autofill From+ select that new +shuffle Playlist+. Click on the Settings button; uncheck +Replace all items when Autofilling+, if it is checked. Check +Choose items randomly+.
When you click on the Autofill button, iTunes will fill the iPod shuffle from that playlist. If the total size of the playlist is less than the capacity of the shuffle, every songs will be transferred the shuffle. If there are more songs on the playlist than will fit, iTunes will randomly choose a maximum set of songs. Going forward, just update that playlist and use Autofill. If you want every songs on the playlist to be on the shuffle, you need to keep an eye on the total size summary at the bottom of the playlist and keep it below the capacity of the shuffle. If you just want a random selection from the playlist each time, you can put as many songs as you want in the playlist. You can even Autofill from your entire music library (instead of a special playlist).

  • Another Manifest victim

Oh dear - talk about arcane? I'm sure developers have got better things to do with their lives than try to work around this primitive utility.
I have a test application - with an executable jar.
In this there are 2 API jars plus the main class. It works (on NT4) testing the jar from the IDE (Forte). It works from the OS (explorer) by clicking on it. If I copy this jar to another machine (Win2K) it fails with the "cannot find main class" message. From DOS etc - I can ascertain that it is not actually the main class that is not found - but a path to a class within the embedded API jar (e.g. com/??/??/??).
Can anyone give me any pointers as to what I should be looking for? The JDK/JRE are all the same on both machines (1.3.1_03 and 1.4-rc) ?
Can it be that on the development machine - the class loader is actually looking outside the jar file to resolve the path to this class (?)
I do have a few jar applications working - but every time there is something added to the equation - more mysterious syntax and work-arounds.
Any hints or help on this would be greatly appreciated.
    TIA

    Doesn't work.
From the command prompt (using java rather than javaw) - it gives the message that it cannot find the class that is embedded in the API jar file ( in this case - ... NoClassDefFoundError: com/compuware/uniface/UnifaceException).
There are no packages defined. Simply the "main" class + 2 API "jar" files.
    Class-Path: . xxx.jar xxy.jar
    Main-Class: MyMainClass
This works in Forte - works on the development machine from Explorer - doesn't work when moved to the Win2K machine. Same JDK/JRE - all Windows and "DOS" paths checked (i.e. running the same JRE).
I am sure there is a "simple" explanation (!)
