Another tip for working around iDVD encoding errors: Use internal drive

I've had several projects that produced the encoding error while rendering the menus, I've also seen a number of tips in this discussion area, e.g., have 20 GB of free space, delete iDVD preferences,  delete encoded assets, and make sure your chapter markers are not near a transition or end of a  clip (good luck with that using iDVD to set your chapters).  Neither of these tips alone allowed me to burn a disk image to disk, but I'm confident they contribute to a more stable iDVD performance overall.
In my case, the only way I've managed to make the projects to work is to copy the iMovie project over to my internal drive, create the iDVD project on the internal drive and to save the disk image to the internal drive.
If you're low on internal disk space, as I am, easy to move assets is another advantage of using iMovie 6 over iMovie 8, i.e., you can create the iMovie project on the external drive and then drag a temporary copy over to the internal drive, then you can launch iDVD from within iMovie 6 without the annoying step of exporting to the Media Browser. When you're done, delete the temporary movie to free up space for your next project. The iDVD projects can also be moved to a backup drive or deleted.

You'll always get better results on the startup volume / internal HD (as opposed to an ext. HD) provided you also have at least 20GB's of available HD space remaining. Anything less is often problematic at best.
My suggestion in this situation is to find a way to clear more HD space. You can clear video files already burned to DVD-R media, burn your iPhoto Library to DVD to clear more space , or even consider clearing languages you won't need on your system with an app like Monolingual. No problems will be created by removing unneeded language files (however it's highly recommend you avoid removing architectures on any intel mac).

  • Repeats for work items with temporary errors for background WI

    Hi!
    I have a task that generates a temporary error method in order to activate the Repeats for work items with temporary errors. It currently has 5 repeats at intervals of 2 min. After running above the WI-status is 'Error'. When Restart by SWPR runs only once and sends the message 'Work item set to error following 05 failed attempts'.
    Please can tell me any way that when run again relaunch fixed repetitions.
    I welcome your comments.
    Thanks.

    Hi Raisme,
    Please show me since it is the design of the workflow. It is probable that you are inside a repetitive sequence that send several work items.

  • Chapter markers causing iDVD encoding error

    TIP:
    I discovered that the text used for a chapter marker in FCE can cause the DVD encoding in iDVD to fail. I kept getting encoding errors at the end and tried multiple fixes without success.
    The solution was to remove the apostrophe that was inserted into one of the chapter marker names. The encoding worked at the next attempt.
    Moral of the story - change the text in iDVD and not in FCE (or at least be careful in FCE).
    Cheers!
    David

    Peter,
    Welcome to the iDVD forum!
    Make sure all your iMovies have sound tracks.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301876
    And I'd try creating a new user and see if that user can successfully burn the project. You will need to move the project and assets to a public folder.
    Make sure you have 20GB free on your startup drive.

  • HT201404 iDVD encoding error!

    I have followed advice from Apple support of ensuring iDVD is open & a new project created before sharing slideshow from iPhoto.
    I was hopeful that the issue would be fixed as the encoding time reduced, however I still get the encoding error after about 2 hours.
    Sharing iPhoto slideshows to iDVD & then burning has worked many times for me in the past.
    Size is well under DVD capacity.  Nothing unusual about the slideshow.
    Help!!!

    Hi
    Just for info. You are aware about
    • Limit of No: of photos in SlideShow function in iDVD (99 max per show) (you can have 99 shows too)
    • that iDVD doesn't care about space as in GBs - but only in time = duration of movies/shows + menu
    iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1) and iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality
    (movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
    • Best Performances
    (movies + menus  less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
    (movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
    Menu can take 15 minutes or even more - I use a very simple one with no audio or animation like ”Brushed Metal” in old Themes.
    About double on DL DVDs.

  • Tips for working with USB floppy drives

    I was just wondering if anyone had any tips on working with USB floppy drives in Archlinux.
    One thing I've noticed is that trying to use mkfs.msdos on my USB floppy drive directly doesn't seem to result in a usable disk (it's mountable, but reports that I don't have enough space available to copy files), but if I use the command on an image file the same size as a floppy disk and then use dd to copy the blank image to my USB drive I get a disk that's perfectly usable.  Anybody know what the deal is with that or how I might be able to successfully format a disk in fewer steps (other than keeping the blank images around and just using dd to format the floppies, haha)?
    Also, I'd like to hear any other tips or tricks any of you have for working with USB floppy drives.  They just seem so much more usable under Windows as opposed to Linux, and that disappoints me a little.

    jmetal88 wrote:Okay, thanks guys.  I haven't figured out the issue yet, but you're helping me narrow it down.  I decided to run a df -h command after each try of formatting the disk this time.  I tried the low-level ufiformat command followed by a mkfs.msdos on the device, using a 720k disk, and df -h showed 700k free on the file system.  It's just not making the file system large enough (I believe the file I was trying to copy over was 710k or so).  When I run mkfs.msdos on a 720k disk image and then dd the image over to the drive, df -h shows 713k free after mounting the drive.  Any idea why mkfs.msdos isn't filling out the full 720k on the disk itself, but is on the image?
    I would assume this happens because (as far as I can tell from skimming through the source over the course of a few minutes) mkfs.fat only applies floppy size heuristics to fd and lo devices -- your USB floppy drive is treated as a hard drive, and that leads to less-than-ideal default parameters. Run
    fsck.fat -v
    on the more spacious filesystem to figure out what options need to be set when you attempt formatting an actual disk. Or just make things easier by keeping newly-formatted blank disk images on hand so that dd and (maybe) ufiformat are all you need to worry about.

  • New Q-10 User - Complaints -- Looking for Work-Arounds

    BB OS 10 has a business path (through enterprise activation) and a personal path – so if you are using enterprise activation for business, you need to make sure your employer has the BES10 feature or it will not work.  And without this feature, I sense it impacts use of the device in many ways.
    Q10 does not have a deactivation feature to prevent deleting email from Outlook when one deletes email from the BB.  Very inefficient – I have to go thru email twice – once on Outlook and once on BB.
    Upon set-up, all Outlook contacts did not interface to the BB.
    When I accept calendar invites on the BB show up on the BB calendar, it reads it as "personal path" (see #1 above) and does not show up on the business path to register on my Outlook calendar.  This causes false availability highlighted on Outlook.
    Replying to email and accepting calendar invites on the BB do not show an indication of response/acceptance on Outlook.  This is very confusing, as I have to personally recall what I’ve replied to on the BB before filing on Outlook.
    I'm guessing I will have more difficulties...but these are major inefficient issues for me. If anyone has "work around solutions" here, please let me know.

    Hello scottjones92660;
    Welcome to the forums and thank you for your question.
    In response to your inquiries I have included the following response for your perusal;
    “BB OS 10 has a business path (through enterprise activation) and a personal path – so if you are using enterprise activation for business, you need to make sure your employer has the BES10 feature or it will not work.  And without this feature, I sense it impacts use of the device in many ways.”
    The BlackBerry 10 devices utilize ActiveSync to communicate\sync with end user mailboxes. Although the BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 does provide security to devices and will setup and separate a Work Perimeter in addition to the Personal Perimeter, devices can also be activated strictly to ActiveSync only.
    “Q10 does not have a deactivation feature to prevent deleting email from Outlook when one deletes email from the BB.  Very inefficient – I have to go thru email twice – once on Outlook and once on BB.
    Upon set-up, all Outlook contacts did not interface to the BB.”
    I am unsure as to your question as it seems contradictory to your above statement. You state the Q-10 does not have a feature to prevent two-way synchronization of mail, which is typical of ActiveSync activated devices. You go on to say that this is inefficient as you have to go through mail on the mail client and on the device.
    The device is utilizing ActiveSync synchronization, as such what is deleted on device or mail client, will sync with the other. If this is not the case and what is deleted on the device or mail client is not syncing, it is possible you may have an incomplete activation. This may also allude to the issue that all contacts from the mailbox Contact Parent Folder did not sync to the device.
    “When I accept calendar invites on the BB show up on the BB calendar, it reads it as "personal path" (see #1 above) and does not show up on the business path to register on my Outlook calendar.  This causes false availability highlighted on Outlook.”
    When a device is activated on the BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10, the device calendar can be accessed from the Personal Perimeter as well as the Work Perimeter.
    The Free\Busy feature with ActiveSync is availability starts in version 14.0 With Microsoft Exchange Server 2010.
    If calendar invites are sent to and accepted by the corporate email account on a device that is activated on a BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10, they will be visible on both Perimeters.

  • Crash in OCR--any suggestions for work-around?

    There is a book from Google Books that I want to read on my computer. It's in the public domain, and I downloaded it here.
    I have OCR'd it using "Searchable Image Exact" in some version of Acrobat (don't remember) so I can do searches in it. But all the Google Books display very slowly, and are basically CPU hogs in every PDF reader that I have found (anybody know the reason for that?), so it is not comfortable to read on my computer.
    So I thought I would try OCR with ClearScan to see if this would speed up pdf display. Every time I have tried OCRing this document with ClearScan, Acrobat crashes (4 trials, 2 computers, v. 9.3.2).
    Questions for anybody out there
    1) Is it normal that OCR-ing causes crashes? This is the first time I have seen it.
    2) Any work-arounds come to mind?
    3) What is the best way to deal with Adobe re. a crashing bug? When I have reported user-interface bugs in Bridge, I received a very nice reply asking me for details 4 months after I reported the bug! I tried calling India but there was a 20-minute hold time, and then we got disconnected and I haven't tried again.

    For what it is worth, I tried to use Adobe's tech support system to resolve this problem (their 1-800 number). I strongly recommend that no-one else ever try that. After talking for 2 hours with what had to be the sweetest and most patient tech support person in the world, we made no progress. She tried to use Adobe's Web Connect to diagnose the problem, but it was broken (known to be broken on Adobe's side), the telephone connection (IP-connection to India) was almost inaudible, they have their ftp site set up in a way that just isn't macintosh friendly (to be charitable, maybe macintosh isn't ftp-friendly). After 2 hours we were almost at the place where she was going to be able to replicate the bug, when I was disconnected. I have a case number, but I just don't have the heart to call back and go through this process.

  • IDVD encoding errors when attempting to burn slide show to DVD.

    iDVD fails to burn disk and fails with encoding error.  Have attempted to use best, good, and professional modes of encoding to no avail.

    Hi Patrick,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions. I see you're a new member. Hope you're enjoying your new Mac Pro. What are you trying to burn to exactly?  I use Verbatim Dvd-R with excellent results. If you are using a higher quality media like Verbatim, Maxell, or Taiyo Yuden but to no avail then I need to ask if you have first tried making a disc image from the file menu in iDvd and then playing back said image with apple's dvd player app (prior to burning to Dvd-R).
    This approach helps us narrow down the issue so we can better assist you.

  • Ideas for working around ORA-06502: character string buffer too small on Interactive report

    Hello,
    This is for Apex 4.2.  We are trying to create an interactive report.  The report is for something similar to a time tracking application.  We are trying to concat a comments column while summing the hours.  For example,
    select TASK_NAME, sum(HOURS), to_char(XMLAGG(XMLELEMENT(E,E.COMMENTS || ' : ')).EXTRACT('//text()').getstringval()) USER_COMMENTS from ......
    This query works fine if we are looking only at a 1 week window.  The issue we are experiencing is that when we expand the range of the query to include data from 3 months, we hit ORA-06502 in the interactive report.  If we remove this column from the Interactive report, then the report runs fine.
    Does anyone have any ideas on how we might be able to work around this?  I am guessing we are hitting the 32k limit on the report.  Ideally we would just show the last X number of comments and then have a link to view all the comments
    Any help would be appreciated
    Thanks
    Mike

    ListAGG throws an ORA-01489 for varchar2 > 4000 bytes
    OP has an ORA-06502 --> the IR is running into a 4k/32k limit.
    quick solution: wrap USER_COMMENTS ListAGG in a substr( ...., 1, 4000)
    Longer solution, use a subquery to modify the comments based on ROW_NUMBER() (ie after nth row, change it to NULL)
    with
    -- simulating data
    t as (select task_id, sysdate - lv as date_entered
      ,round(dbms_random.value(1,24)) hours
      , '-*' || lv || '.' || task_id || '*-' as user_comments
    from ( select level as task_id from dual connect by level <=10 ), (select level lv from dual connect by level < 1000)
    -- modify data
    modified_data as (
      select task_id, hours, date_entered
        ,case
          when row_number() over (partition by task_id order by date_entered desc) < 5
            then user_comments
          else null
         end USER_COMMENTS
        from t)
    select task_id, sum(hours) total_hours,
      listagg( user_comments  ) within group (order by date_entered desc)
      || case when count(*) >= 5 then '! MORE COMMENTS !' else null end
        as user_comments
    from modified_data

    Hi
    Few of us here are mind-readers
    So if You only say that something is wrong - How do You thing we'll be able to guess what ?
    There are zillions of things that can go awry.
    • What material was used - Video Codecs, photo and audio file formats ?
    • Edited in what video editing program - iMovie (version), FinalCut (version) or Adobe Premiere ?
    • How was it imported into iDVD ?
    • Was there any Error Messages - What did it/they say ?
    • Where in the process did it go wrong
    • Brand of DVD used
    • Type of DVD used
    • Burn Speed - set to ?
    and much much more need to be told - to set us up on track on where the culprit is.

  • Tips for working on bad VHS audio?

    I have been working on a VHS transfer for a client, with clips that are extremely hissy. These clips may even be second gen copies, but I'm not exactly sure of the lineage.
    I have been trying to reduce the hiss as much as possible in STP2, but am not getting the best results. I can greatly decrease the hiss using the noise reduction, but lose a good chunk of the vocal frequency. The results are either too low or too high for the vocals, almost muddy sounding.
    Using the Expander - High Expansion preset helps after the noise reduction, but I'm not familiar enough with the tool to do too much with it. The GraphicEQ tool also helps restore the voice, without the hiss, but it takes a lot of guessing on my part.
    I was curious if anyone had any tips or suggestions for working with old, hissy VHS audio in STP, or on how to make better use of the STP tools.

  • Another tip for posting in Shameless Promotion

    I say "another tip" but it's just an old one, repeated...
    When you post a description of your book, this will be the first example anyone will ever see of your writing. It is therefore of prime importance that it be letter-perfect: proper punctuation, good grammar and correct spelling. If your description rambles, is full of typos and misspelled words and random punctuation, why would anyone think your book is written any better?
    Getting the description perfect is exactly like making sure you are well-groomed when going to a job interview: first impressions are everything.

  • Working around unchecked conversions when using reflection

    I think I've convinced myself that there's no way around this issue when using reflection and Generics, but here's the issue:
    Suppose I've got a method that uses reflection to compare an arbitrary property in
    an arbitrary pair of beans (of the same class).
    public static <T> int compare(T bean0, T bean1, String prop) throws Exception {
         Method m = bean0.getClass().getMethod(
                   "get" + prop.substring(0,1).toUpperCase() +
                   prop.substring(1));
         Object o0 = m.invoke(bean0);
         Object o1 = m.invoke(bean1);
         if (o0 instanceof Comparable &&
             o1 instanceof Comparable &&
             (o1.getClass().isAssignableFrom(o0.getClass()) ||
              o0.getClass().isAssignableFrom(o1.getClass()))) {
              return ((Comparable)o0).compareTo(o1); // compiler warning
         } else {
              return o0.toString().compareTo(o1.toString());
    }There's no way that, in general, when using reflection to invoke methods, that you can coerce the types to avoid compile-time type safety warnings. I think the above code is guarranteed not to throw a runtime ClassCastException, but there's no way to write the code so that the compiler can guarrantee it. At least that's what I think. Am I wrong?

    Ok it looks like you're dealing with a classloader issue. when you call that method, it is the equivelant of calling
    Class.forName("Box", true, this.getClass().getClassLoader())The exception is thrown when your class's classloader cannot find the class box. try putting 'null' there
    Class.forName("Box", true, null)and it will request the bootstrap classloader to load the class. just make sure you have permission :
    If the loader is null, and a security manager is present, and the caller's class loader is not null, then this method calls the security manager's checkPermission method with a RuntimePermission("getClassLoader") permission to ensure it's ok to access the bootstrap class loader.
