Another "using another person's upgrade" question

Sorry in advance if this question has been covered 100 times before.  I spent some time trying to find an answer that fits my scenario in the forums but didn't find an exact fit.
My Droid Incredible touch screen stopped working this past week (no drops, no water, no reason to stop working) and since I am 1yr and 3months into owning the device and have no insurance the local store said I'm pretty much SOL and to contact HTC.  Dealing with HTC has been the worst customer service experience of my life and they pretty much said the same thing since they only cover their devices for 1 year.  (Said I could send it in to their repair facility on my dime for 2 weeks minimum and they would determine the repair cost and contact me).  So I can't upgrade until April on my account and am trying to figure out a way to get a new phone (not at full price).
My girlfriend has been up for an upgrade for months now (she uses a basic phone, no data) and isn't in any hurry to use it.  She does't ever want a smart phone and said that I should just use her upgrade.  So, the details and questions are as follows:
1. We are not on the same account (family plan).  We have individual plans.  My plan is 400 or so mintues of talk and unlimited data.  Her plan is 400 minutes or so of talk.
2. I would like to use her upgrade to get an iphone 4s.
3. We do not want to change her plan (its something like $30 a month grandfathered plan).
4. I would like to keep my current plan as well.  (unlimited data)
Is it possible to make all of these things happen?  I have read that it is simple if you are on a family plan to do this.  Can we go down to the local store and get an iphone 4s and activate it on my account instead of hers?
As a side question (and to make things more complicated)... Does anyone know if we can we combine our accounts together into 1 account and save money or minutes.  We both hardly use our minutes at all and aside from me using the data plan for work we toss out hundreds of minutes per month.

Most likely - if it is a corporate store.  If it's an "authorized reseller" or a third party store, it amy be more difficult and they may tell you they can't do it.
As a side question (and to make things more complicated)... This MAY make it more simple!  Does anyone know if we can we combine our accounts together into 1 account and save money or minutes.  We both hardly use our minutes at all and aside from me using the data plan for work we toss out hundreds of minutes per month.
You can get a family plan with 700 shared minutes, 2 lines, for $70, and the data plan on your phone would be $30.  I'm not sure if you would be able to keep your unlimited data though - you might be if you do this in stages.  First, combine your two accounts into one family plan and do nothing about upgrading for now.  Let that "settle"; your upgrade dates and eligibilities will remain the same as they were on your individual plans.  If you can make this transition and keep your unlimited data, then you're good to go upgrade the eligible line (your girlfirend's) to the iPhone, but activate it on your line.  Her line's contract will be extended for two years, but she can use her old phone and you can use the iPhone.  If the unlimited data did carry over, it will remain for the iPhone too.

    Question? What machine is this on? The CPU speed? The version of OS you have? Also, if you know the version on the AEX?
    There are some 'newer' requirments to have WPA2... even tho it is stated in the OSX 10.4+... it is not an option without updated versions for the Airport Extreme. I am refering to both the AEX in the computer and the 'Remote' WiFi Airport Extreme. If one can be updated (firmware), but the has maxed out... that is it. I have maxed mine out and do have it. Your machine sounds older, if that is the one you are using.
    Look under the Apple Menu and 'more info'. Let us know what it is. Also, go to Apple Update in System Preferences and see what version you have on the list (the latest one).

  • Upgrade to iphone 5 using another upgrade

    I have 5 lines on my plan. Only one line is a smart phone which is a droid and is not eligible for an upgrade until May 2013. 3 of the other lines on my plan our eligible for an upgrade but are not smart phones. Would I be able to use one of these upgrades for the iPhone 5 and activate it to the line that my Droid is on? My only concern is committing to another data plan on a line that is not a smart phone.     I understand you not wanting to add an additional data plan on a line that will not be needing it. As mdram4x4 mentioned you can use the upgrade eligibility of your other line to get the iPhone 5 on the line that already has a data plan. You can do an alternate upgrade, which is basically just transferring the upgrade to another line on the account. Visit http://bit.ly/RiHrRf for more information.

    I'm glad to hear you'll be taking advantage of an alternate upgrade on your lines.  As previously mentioned, this can be done directly from My Verizon, where you can compare up to five devices and decide which device is perfect for you. Keep in mind you'll first select the line that is eligible for an upgrade.  Once this is done you will get an option to choose the line where the device will be activated.   • TS2998 Help! My Mac mail uses another person's name in stead of mine in the "from" heading when trying to send e-mail. How can I fix this?

    Mac mail started using another person's name instead of mine. In the "From" line it shows someone other than me so the receipient will not know I am sending them an e-mail. HELP!, This is crazy. Is there a fix?

    Does this problem happen EVERY time you send an email?
    Do you see the wrong FROM entry before you hit the send button? Or does the recipient report seeing another name other than yours?
    Do you recognize the incorrect name being shown? Is it something you or someone else using your machine have ever used? Is it a name you have never heard of before?
    Go to your SENT folder in Apple Mail. What do you see when you open one of your SENT emails, in the FROM slot? Is the name correct or incorrect?
    Also, I don't understand your comment "I noticed it when I try to send a link via e-mail to another person." are you saying that when you paste a link into an email to someone that your name in the FROM field changes? Where are you putting the link, in what place in the email?

    I am using my MacAir with my iTuens and its account to organize my music. Now I want to burn a CD, but I don't have a CDRom with my MacAir. So far, I have been using my home Mac Pro's CD to import music from CD. Yet, I am wondering if I can use my Mac Pro CDRom to burn a CD from my iTuens Playlist in my MacAir notebook, you know, remotely using another person's CDRom.

    Keep the temperature down, usually by boosting the lowest default fan speed to help.
    Also FBDIMMs on Amazon I have run at 59*C versus the 72*C+ of prior modules so adding less heat into the system.
    There are kits you can modify the card's fan and add copper heat sink pipes. You may be fine and not have to buy a new card and continue with the 8800GT.
    The X1900 was a huge problem with dust and therefore with heat and making the fans work harder - but never able to cool the interior, so the card had to be removed and dust inside the card's chamber 3-4X per year.
    My Mac Pro 1,1 even without the X1900 would warm up the area during winter after 3-4 hours of use - the exhaust on these is very hot. So monitor the temps and fans and I would  install SmcFanControl - I have always had it since 2007 to keep the fans default at 800-900 rpm along with Hardware Monitor (or use another) to monitor all the system sensors.

  • Another 10.3.9 upgrade question

    I'm looking to upgrade the OS on my G4-processor-equipped G3 to something later than OS X 10.3.9.
    What I'd like to do after this upgrade:
    -Add speech-to-text software (i.e. MacSpeech), so I can take some of the writing load off my hands. (I'm a magazine editor/writer by trade, and I'm in my 50s now & my hands aren't getting nay younger)
    -Use a web browser that's more recent than Safari 1.3.2, or at least one that's been released in this century/millenium. (I currently use Camino 1.6.10 as a last resort, as most web sites don't support my version of Safari anymore.)
    What I'd like to know:
    -Is such an OS update possible?
    -Where would I get it from--The Apple Store (online)?
    -How much would it cost?
    -Would I need to get an auxilary hard drive to do this if I don't have enough memory space on this computer? (And where would I find that auxilary hard drive, and how much would it cost?)
    Even though this isn't my primary work computer, I'd like to have the speech-to-text capability that would enable me to work from home...plus have an up-to-date web browser that doesn't freeze up or crash like Camino does.

    How much RAM do you have? For best operation you should have at least 1GB. (BTW - Memory refers to RAM. The space on your hard drive is referred to capacity and free/available space.)
    If you Mac has a firewire connection, get an external firewire connected hard drive. Firewire drives are bootable, whereas USB connected drives are not. Here's a good source: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/
    Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store *but may be available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753)*. For other sources, do a Google search for MA453Z/A (10.4.6), MA190Z/A (10.4.3) and M9639Z/A (10.4) . Also look on eBay. Be sure & buy a retail version (black with silver X) and not a model specific version (gray) (See Can I use another Mac's system restore disc on my Mac? ). Expect to pay (possibly a lot) more than the Apple list price of $129.

    Possible Alternative if you are currently using Panther 10.3 – Do a Google search for Tiger 10.4 Upgrade DVD . It will upgrade your 10.3 to 10.4, but it doesn’t contain the full retail Tiger installer. Should be cheaper than the retail Tiger install DVD.

    Right now, there is no real way to do that. You could log into Firefox Sync [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/what-firefox-sync https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/what-firefox-sync], and that would move your personal data to the new computer (if it was using Firefox). but then you would want to delete your profile on the public computer to ensure you didn't leave your personal information available for others.
    There are initiatives that plan on making it possible to log onto Firefox from any computer and instantly have all your information, but they are not near completion.

    Hey I’m trying to figure out what my early termination fee would be if I removed a line from my family plan. 2 years ago I upgraded my phone early (to the iPhone 4s) by using my father’s upgrade, and he used my upgrade a year later. This year I used his upgrade again to get the iPhone 5s. If I switch to my own plan, will the ETF be based on the phone purchased for this line, or for the upgrade used for this line?
    I actually want the ETF to be the higher one so that my dad isn’t stuck with it if he decides to switch later. Is there a way to tell Verizon what upgrade I want the ETF to be based on?

    When you say you want to "switch to my own plan", what does that mean. If you simply want to stay with Verizon and take your phone and start your own account, there would be no ETF. You would simply perform an assumption of liability.
    If you want to go to another provider, the ETF would be based on the line you are taking to the other provider. If you take your line to another provider and the last contract on your line was signed when purchasing your fathers phone when he used your upgrade, you would be paying the ETF based upon that purchase.

    I currently have a Blackberry Bold with unlimited data, and the other line on my plan is just a basic phone. Currently walmart, has the iPhone 5 on sale for $127 but the sale goes off before my upgrade which is on 1/23/12. Back in October one vzw sales Rep told me j could transfer the other persons upgrade to my line to get an iPhone 5. But last night on the vzw support twitter someone told me that the iPhone 5 wasn't eligible for early upgrades therefor I couldn't use the other lines upgrade, that I could only use mine on 1/23? Does anybody know which is right?     Also could I keep my unlimited data if I was to transfer her upgrade? I know I couldn't if I used mine.

    Yes if you transfer her upgrade you can A) get the iphone and B) keep your unlimited data and because your coming from a blackberry to iphone i advised doing backup assistance on your blackberry before the transfer but other than that youll have no problem with the activation just make sure that if you get it from walmart that you call to activate it otherwise they will activate it on the wrong line and cause all sorts of problems

    I'm looking to upgrade my macbook's RAM it's currently got 2GB (2x1GB)
    Is it possible to purchase 1x4GB and put that with one of my current 1GB sticks to create a total of 5GB?
    I would be interested to know if this is possible or if anyone has tried it.

  • Black Screen - Get Chime - Can Boot off HDD using another Mac - iMac 24in.

    Hope someone can help me here, as I'm at my wits end.
    I've got two issues, one with my MacBook Pro 17in, 4GB RAM, 160GB 7200rpm (2008) and another with my iMac 24in. 4GB RAM, 500GB 7200rpm (2009).
    Firstly the MBP, left work on Thursday last week, got home, powered up the MBP and got a black screen!!! Tried resetting PRAM, SMC, booting in safe mode, removing and re-installing RAM, removing battery and mains power and leaving off overnight etc etc, yet nothing happens. Benn all over the forums and have not found any solution to get my beloved MBP working on it's own. I can boot off the HDD using another MBP 15in, re-install Snow Leopard and as far as I can tell the HDD is fine, as I have run disk utility and it tells me the HDD is OK.
    I can't figure this out and it's doing my head in, as I use this laptop for business use and just can't afford to go out and buy another Mac. I should point out that this MBP never had any issues when running on Leopard, but ever since I upgraded to Snow Leopard, I have had nothing, but trouble. I did a clean install, in fact I have done it at least twice, even erasing the HDD securely, both at 7pass and 35pass, yet I have had permissions issues regularly and on the odd occasion, I have also had the problem of the HDD not being recognised.
    The iMac is nearly the same, but the screen is working, although the iMac doesn't see the HDD no matter what way I do, again, reset PRAM, SMC, safe boot etc etc. In truth the iMac has been a lot more unreliable, but with the screen working, if I can get any solutions here, then I'll be working to work on that without the need or hassle of working via another.
    I think that the MBP is only just still under warranty, but the iMac definitely is, but I need at least one working for business use, so really only want to let Apple have one at a time to look at/repair etc.
    Ideally, as the HDD is working in the MBP, if I could get a solution to the black screen issue, then I could do without the iMac for whatever time it takes, so if there is anyone out there that can help, I'd be so grateful.
    One last thing, when I bought the iMac 24in., I also bought an iMac 20in., but I never upgraded the 20in. to Snow Leopard and to this day, it has worked flawlessly, without a single issue ever.
    Perhaps, I'm getting paranoid here, but there seems to me to be a link between the ongoing and regularly occurring problems with both Macs ant the upgrade to Snow Leopard. Why also, or is it just pure unadulterated coincidence that both the MBP and the iMac 24in have failed at pretty much the same time??!!!!
    I'm going mental here, so I hope someone out there has a better fix, then me overdosing on Prozac!!

    I'm not a mac expert, not good with a soldering iron either, but I'm capable of following good instructions.

    Using Snow Leopard forum is probably your best bet.
    I don't care if someone has 20+ yrs, I still like having a good troubleshooting book/manual handy.
    Mac: can't get by without bootable backups, even if you use TimeMachine, clone your system. Save you all this fuss and work.
    Then invest in high quality disk repair and maintenance program.
    Disk Warrior / TechTool Pro 5 / Drive Genius 3 - top 3 probably
    There are always going to be normal items you just ignore with Repair Permissions. Useful to do once in a while but not magic. Same with SMC and the rest. Running disk repair is one of those things that it seems should be done before there is trouble, not after, and a weakness in HFS file system and disk directory.
    Apple Support is a good place to start looking and then hardware category.

    Make sure all your software is current, don't install anything you are unsure of or can do without.
    Run Apple Hardware Test off your OEM DVD specific to the Mac.
    Now, have you Googled for this?
    have you looked at reports about 500GB drives used in some Macs that had issues and were offered firmware update for the drive?
    Considered just using another drive connected to iMac?
    You can overheat a hard drive with needlessly running 7 and 35-write pass, besides which the best way to map out bad blocks is not Disk Utility.
