Another "version" of a project without screwing anything : best way ?

I wish to do another version of a project (some common files, wiping some, adding some new, different audio file and so on) without wiping what's on the original. Is it enough just to rename the project for that ?
Should I make sure to save everything in a different folder ? (Con: taking disk space...)
Can I work the new version under CS4 (even if created in CS3) and expect the CS3 version to remain untouched ?
Thanks,
Rob

The CS3 / CS4 ping-pong does not seem to be a good idea: Every time I switch from one project to the other (same files, different project name), I get PP to "Generate Peak files" for about 20 minutes... Guess the better option will be to create a new sequence under CS3 rather than doing two different versions of the project in CS3 and CS4. Then, I need to render the project just as if it had not been done previously (another 10 minutes...).
Unless there's something I started wrongly ?
Thanks,
Rob

  • Versions in my Projects that are Masters

When I import an image into Aperture and it goes into a Project, if I delete this Image by going to "Delete Version" this deletes the Version and the "Master" (wherever /it/ is) without a warning is that right? I ask in part because the Aperture Documentation states specifically that there are both "Masters" and "Versions" in Projects in a managed images database and this is uber confusing.
Also, if I import an image into Aperture and it goes into a Project, and then I create an Album and drag and drop this "Version" into the Album - so that there is a "Version" in the Album - if I go to "Delete Version" from within the Album, Aperture will delete the Version in the Album *AND* it will delete the "Version" in the Project without a warning, is that right?
Both of these appear to be the case no matter how many "Versions" of the image you have in a Project or have copied to an Album.
I guess I have found it terribly confusing for Aperture to be /then/ giving me a Warning Dialog that says I am deleting a "Master" that may be referenced from other Albums. Because I personally am MORE concerned with deleting the /original images/ that I have imported which I can do from within Projects or from within Albums without any alert.
    Am I missing something here?
    THANKS.

Yeah. This just seems very weird to me.
I mean, I /really/ care about deleting my Masters and I get no warning about this whatsoever in any cases (deleting from a Project or Deleting a Version from an Album). I could be deleting a Version in an Album and accidentally think that I have another Version in another Album and poof away goes the Master when this is not what I thought I was doing.
And the warning that /does/ come when you are going to delete a Master from within a Project /sounds/ like it is about deleting a Master - - that by the way /may/ or that may /not/ be linked to an Album. When in reality it is simply telling you the Version in the Album is going away. Then if you delete a Master that /doesn't/ have one of those links to a Version in an Album you get /no/ warning. Yikes.
I think they need to clear up the language on the prompt IMHO because right now it is uber confusing. And really there should be two:
I: "You are deleting a Version in an Album that will also delete the Version which is a Master in a Project".
II: "You are deleting a Master from a Project which will also delete a Version that is contained in an Album".

  • Best way to replace move in iDVD project?

    Hello,
I have an iDVD project started and realized I wanted to change a couple details in the iMovie I imported to the project. I can go back and correct the iMovie, but what's the best way to replace the current movie in the iDVD project with the revised iMovie? I'd rather not have to start a new iDVD project and add the pictures to the drop zones etc. Thank you, Rick H.

I forgot that if I hit 'return' the forum cuts what I write. Once I've got a movie in an iDVD project, what's the best way to replace that movie with a revised version (if I realize I need to make a couple changes in iMovie? Do you just go to the map and manually delete everything except the main title? Thanks, Rick.

  • What is the best way to install new version... adobe always leaves stuff behind from the old version

    Hi,
I've gone through the installation of a new version, well... 8 times before. And have noticed that adobe has the nasty habit of not cleanly uninstalling the previous versions...
What is the best way to do this?
Should I do a regular install and trust adobe this time to completely remove the old version and its associated directories?
Or should I uninstall the old version and install the new one? I've always been afraid to go this route bocause of the organizer files.
    Thanks for your comments.

So, just to be clear:  the "proper, Adobe-recommended" way to go about an upgrade would be to install the new version and THEN remove the older version by means off "Add/Remove programs"  ??
Thanks to all for your help.

  • How can I move an original Version from one Project to another Project?

How can I move an original Version from one Project to another Project?

    From the Aperture User Manual:
To move an image into a different project
Drag the image [from the Browser] into another project in the Library inspector.

  • How can I export a comp or pre-comp to another AE project without having to rebuild or make a movie?

Can I export an AE comp or pre-comp to another AE project without having to rebuild or make a movie? In regard to tweaks or timing changes based on that projects' needs.

First, save the project in a different name.  Delete out the comps & precomps you neither want nor need.  Run AE's reduce project command to remove any unused footage, then save it again.  Now you have a simplified project, which you can then import into any AE project you want.
If you like things nice & tidy, don't forget to use the replace layer (Alt-drag, Opt-drag) trick on any duplicated footage, using the footage from the project into which you import the simplified project.  The alternative: just leave all the footage alone, and know you can't delete it.

  • How do I add another movie to the project area to work on without it being attached to a previous project?

How do I add another movie to the project area to work on without it being attached to a previous project?

No.  I have a number of items in the Event Library.  I am trying to move some of them to the Project Library and when I do it attaches itself to the other project I have there.

  • The last Version in a Project is a Master?

I am reading the Aperture documentation and the Glossary states:
Version: The file containing all the metadata and adjustment information applied to an images, a vidao clip, or an audio clip. In Aperture, only versions are changed. Aperture never changes masters. See also master.
Master: The source media file that was copied from either your computer's file systeem or your camera's memory card. In Aperture, the master is never modified. Whenver a change is made to an image, a video clip, or an audio clip, that change is applied to the version. See also memory card, project, version.
Project: In Aperture the top-level container that holds all the masters, versions, and metadata associated with your shoot. In the cae of referenced images, the masters are stored in their current location rather than in the project file. See also album, folder, library, master, referenced images, version.
    I am trying to understand
    1. Is this saying that I have /both/ Versions and Masters in my Project in a managed images database (i.e. all images are in the Aperture database)? If so, is there a number of ways to create a version from a master so I can see what this does /and/ is there a way to tell which is a Version and which is the Master if they look exactly the same?
    2. If I have /both/ two Versions of a Master and the Master in a Project (three total files) - and assuming they look exactly the same can I just willy-nilly delete two of these same looking images and expect Aperture to just delete two and retain "the" Master? I mean, functionally speaking it doesn't matter which of these three I delete because Aperture will perform a sort of sleight of hand and keep one is that it?
Sorry for all the posts on this but I am trying to read up on this and get work done at the same time and I just don't get this yet.
    Thanks,
    Jon

    OK. Thank you.
Can I please just follow up with you on this? I am experimenting and seeing behaviour I am not sure I really understand.
If I then take these three Versions (all of the same Master) - and I copy them to an Album. I am seeing the following behaviour (from my recollection):
I can DELETE the third Version in the Album (which Deletes the Version in the Project), then I can delete the second Version in the Album (which deletes the second version in the Project), then I can delete the third version in the Album (which deletes my last remaining Version in the Project) - all without any warning or any alert. Is that right? I mean at this point I have no more Master.
Also, I am uber paranoid about deleting things at this point because I trashed my database so badly but I have ALBUMS that have IMAGES in them. SOME of these "Versions" are being used by other ALBUMS because I have STARRED AND COLORED all the Versions in my Albums. Now I know for a fact what I have in my albums and when I look in a PROJECT I know not to delete this or I will screw up my Album.
However, how do I delete an Album without worrying that I am going to delete a "master version" (i.e. trash my last Version in my Project for my master) or that I am going to trash a Version that is being used by another ALBUM?!
Do I just run a DELETE of the ALBUM and this is like REMOVING the Version from the Album in a way that won't trash my Master or my Albums?!
    Does that question make sense??

  • What is the best way to save different versions of a project?

I am working on a documentary with hundreds of hours of footage. I've been told that to avoid file corruption, I need to regularly save different version of the project. I've done some research and there appears to be different ways to do this.
In Lisa Brenneis's FCP book, she suggests using "Save As" to protect one's work (renaming the old copy with a version number, and using the same name for the most updated version). This makes sense to me, since this would avoid FCP creating new capture folders every time I change the name of my project. However, I'm wondering if there is a difference between doing Brenneis' technique or duplicating the project.
Are there different schools of thoughts on this? Does anyone have a system that works for them that they recommend? I've done research and I can't find anything on this topic, other than issues with backing up (I'm working with several hard drives - but what I'm most concerned about is avoiding file corruption and making sure my media isn't all over the place).
    Thanks for sharing!

    Good topic!
I use the technique of popping over to Finder and using command-D
to make a copy every once in a while. Then at the end of the day,
I'll make a copy of the session to another disk. Whenever I've done
a lot of work that I never want to lose, I take a copy to another location.
If a backup is super-important, be sure to test it!
It only takes a minute to quit FCP, and double-click on the backup.
When I return to work the next day, after making sure my project opens,
I delete all the "copy" files, then make a new one and the process repeats.
When I output the edit for others to work on or approve, I will make
a special copy of the project with the date encoded in the file name,
    Japanese-style (e.g. MyProject_2009-01-22.fcp and RoughEdit_2009-01-22.mov),
then I never touch that file. Doing the dates Japanese-style means
that they will be organized chronologically in Finder.
Keeping these intermediate projects means that people can refer
to very specific times on specific versions, and I can find exactly
    what they are talking about.
As far as media goes, most people do not back up tape,
because it's such a pain (you need two drives). People tend
to keep their tapes in a box somewhere. This can work OK
if you never use Capture Now.
Since capturing from tape is such a time-consumer,
and since I don't usually work with tape anyway,
I focus on good disk backup. Ideally I'll have a disk
and a backup at home, and a copy of the media files
    at another location.
Be sure to keep the backups organized and named
carefully so you can FIND what you are looking for
if you need to. Adding a little text file in your folder
explaining stuff is not a bad idea.
People talk a lot about media failure, and yes all media
will fail someday, but I use backups mostly because
of my mistakes, like deleting the wrong file or something
    stupid like that.
Be sure to back up all the other little files you might be
using in a project, like Filemaker databases, graphics files,
    important emails, hours logs, etc.
It's good that you are thinking about this important topic.

  • Garageband x ip4s change project without autosave

Hi, another little question. When I'm making a project and want to go to an other in my list of project, garageband close with autosaving and goes to the list of project. So if I have make some mod that I don't want to save, garageband save it the same. Someone knows how to exit a project and open an other without saving ? thank you
(I don't know if is the same on ipad)

Any regular way to quit the current project will autosave it on an iPad or iPhone, iPod (switching to the project view, switching to anouther app).
A brute force way to exit the current project without saving is to reset your IOS device (hold down the Home button and press the Power button at the same time, until the phone restarts). This will quit GarageBand without auto saving the current project and you can open a different one after restarting your iPhone.
I got into the habit of duplicating a project, before starting to edi it. This way I always have a backup copy to revert to, if I do not like the current version.
    Regards
    Léonie

  • How can i add an already existing iphone to a different itunes account without changing anything on the actual phone...just updating it?

I have an iphone synced to my iTunes account.  But I need to add another used/existing iphone to my account to update it.  I do not want to sync my emails/contacts/apps, etc. from my computer/iTunes to this new iPhone.  This 2nd iPhone already has existing apps and is in use.
Is there any way that I can do this without changing anything on the existing iPhone?  All I need to do is update it to the iOS 5.0.1.
    Thanks!

Thanks so much for the response!  You have been helpful and quick!
It wasn't my phone, hence the reason we didn't want to share/take each other's content (apps, contacts, music, photos, etc.).  But the owner's phone hadn't been able to update because of a computer crash/no access to a stable computer.  So, I just wasn't sure if we could do an update without sharing content.
But you most definitely answered my question!  So, thank you!

Can more than one apple id sign in on my tablet without deleting anything off? Or does err1 hve 2 use ID while on my iPad?

Another ID can be signed into on the iPad without losing anything, but it is not advisable to download purchased content with another ID, or you will lock yourself out of your own ID for 90 days.  Why don't you explain exactly why you want to sign in with another ID.

  • How can i take the pictures from my old ipod and transfer them onto my computer without deleting anything

How can I take the pics from my old ipod and transfer them onto my computer without deleting anything?

Pictures on an iPod are stored in a special format, optimized for the iPod's small lower resolution screen, to save storage space.  iTunes puts them into that format when syncing.  There is setting in iTunes, on the iPod's Photos screen (where you set up syncing of photos) for Include full resolution photos.  If that checkbox was checked when you synced the photos to the iPod, THEN you can Enable disk use and find those photo files on the iPod in the Photos folder.
Otherwise, you cannot get your photos back, using iTunes.  There may be third-party utilities that can extract individual photos from the iPod, but they will still be lower-resolution versions of the original photo.
