Another WinXP Sata Raid Boot Problem

Hi there, I've flipped though a bunch of posts but I haven't been able to find the issue I'm having, so I figured I'd post and cross my fingers.
I'm running a K8 Neo4 Platinum board (updated the bios to 1.9) and I'm trying to get it to boot WinXP off a striped pair of Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 (400g).  With nothing else connected except a DVD drive, floppy drive, and the two HDs on ports 1 and 2 (set to striped array in the Riad setup), I booted up from the WinXP SP2 cd.
Pressed F6, loaded the drivers (newest ones I could find at the msi site).  Setup detected an 800g hard disk no problem.  Created a small partition (50g) for the OS, formatted normally, and let Setup do it's thing.  Everything went fine with no errors, reg key, settings, not a hitch.
And that's where the happiness ended.  Upon trying to boot from the drives, WinXP gets as far as loading Wup.sys and simply reboots itself.  Safe mode, last known all result in the same reboot.  I tried to repair the installation, fixboot, chkdsk, and that simply killed the installation wholesale.
As a side note, I can install boot off a single SATA drive without problems.
It feels like I'm forgetting something really simple, since XP was able to recognize and install without problems, but it just can't boot.  I've been fighting with this darn thing for a few days now, and I'm about ready to just give up and run them as single drives.  There is no data on there no reformatting or doing something funky is perfectly fine.  Anyone have any ideas?  Thanks in advance!

and...? any changes?
get a copy of Memtest86 and test your memory for errors.
another and most suspected thing is your PSU:
"Antec 400W (3.3v/30 5v/28a 12v/14A)"
get a decent PSU with 30A or more on +12V.
Ah, I read the spec wrong.  The PSU is dual rails so 12v1 is 14a and 12v2 is 15a. Hopefully, since pretty much everything else is unplugged, that should be enough power to boot.
I tried mem test, no errors after multiple passes.
Also, when I tried the new nVidia drivers, it got me to where I am now.  Auto reboot when trying to start Windows.  The old MSI drivers gave me an undefined error or an "unmoutable device" error.  Both resulted in a bluescreen and immediate reboot.

  • K7N2G-ILSR raid boot problem

    Hi,
I have an msi  K7N2G-ILSR mobo and am having boot problems on the raid system.
Everything worked fine (raid 0 set up sata) and would boot fine, the bios had to be set up to look for other boot devices in order for the system to boot with raid drives.
Problem occurred when I added an ide card to give me 2 more ide channels. Still fine if I only connect cd roms to new card but as soon as I connect a hard drive it appears the msi board stops looking for the raid drives as a boot device, because I get the message NIVIDIA Boot Agen PXE-2.0(build 082 v1.82)

    Copyright......................(info)

    PXE-53: No boot filename received.
    PXE-MOF: Exiting NVIDIA Boot Agent
DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER
It seams there needs to be a bios update as when you scroll through boot options (first, second & third) in advanced setup there is no choice for raid. Therefore the only way to boot from raid is to choose “look for other boot devices” and that is OK until you add a second ide card with hard drive on.
I have version 1.6 bios (latest on msi`s site)
Any idears on how to get round this ?

    Hi Raven,
For your info windows xp will support any number of ide channels (upto the number of spare pci slots you have).
I have another computer that has 2 extra ide cards in and has 2 dvd`s (on seprate channels) & 6 hard drives as well as raid hard drive set up. Windows is not confused and supports all devices and has done for the last few months ! This mobo has boot from raid in its bios so has no problems on boot up. The reason I need so many ide channels is simply I do video work and need loads of storage space so until I can buy 800gb hard drives for a reasnable price I am stuck with having to buy 200gb drives.
As I said it looks like either a bios update from msi or I`m going to have to buy a new mobo.
    Regards.

  • SATA RAID setup problem - 845PE Max2 FISR

    Hi,
I have tried to switch from XP made RAID 1 (striping) to BIOS (SATA) supported one.
    1. Detached 2xIBM 80G disks from IDE1
    2. Attached a ViPower VP-9041 SATA to Ultra ATA (33/66/100/133) converter to each.
    3. Changed the jumper on the slave disk to master.
    4. Attached the disks to the SATA ports.
    5. At boot checked if SATA is enabled in the BIOS - OK. (Not too many or sophisticated options can be found in my bios, see below.)
Originally the a 40GB Maxtor on IDE3 (supported by the Promise 376 SATA chipset as well) used for XP SP2 boot - it remained this way.
At first boot FastTrak BIOS detected IDE3 (as before) and scanned for other IDE drives, but detected only one of the two 80 GB SATA converted disks.
At later boots, neither SATA disks detected, but I got the folowing message from FastTrak BIOS:
Warning- FastTrak does not detect proper interrupts. Please check your PCI IRQ settings, and make sure the PCI slot supports Bus Master operations.
IDE3 disk detected correctly and the system can boot from it.
If I remove ony one of the SATA disks, no warning from BIOS, but the other SATA disk is not detected either.
Any hint? (Changing PCI Bus Master state in the BIOS to either enable or disable does not matter.)
    My BIOS is AMI 3.31a.

Now I got another 845PE-MAX2-FISR from the dealer, and this one works!!
So the conclusion is, the other 845PE-MAX2-FISR coursed the ram error...

  • K9A2 CF Sata HDD BOOT Problem

    Hello all.
Got this nice MB yesterday, and everything got running without problem.
Today, a few hours back, my computer shut itself down, and after that
it wont boot with ANY Sata HDD. The computer boots up, you get a 1-2 second
glimpse at the BIOS data, then the computer shuts down.
I don't have any problem with my sata burner. With that my computer boots up OK.
I have tried to flash the BIOS from 1.2 to 1.6, and still the same problem.
Beside the Sata HDD trouble, everything else is working flawlessly.

  • SATA RAID problem on K8N Neo2 Platinum (nForce3 ultra) & winXP x64

I entered on MSI driver dowload page, put my model, and i found out that the RAID driver for win x64 wasn't released (nforce3 ultra), but in the same page was the driver for the nforce4, so I supposed it was compatible. I made the driver disk. press F6 and he askme for the drivers, ok, i introduce BOTH drivers, he detects perefctly the SATA RAID (stripping) format the disk, copy the files and ask me for some .CATof teh raid driver that wasn't on the zip file.... omit files, reboots, completes the instalation, but on the first boot of win x64 when it's just about to show the windows screen, a bue windows, and resets the pc so fast that's unreadable.  fail safe start.. same crash.
I Installed win on an IDE and it run prefectly... In th other hand... without installing any driver the windows instalation recognices the SATA drives, but not the RAID. Maybe I just got to install the raid driver but not the SATA driver... the nforce3 driver form nvidia.com is pretty old... The real funny is that when i installed winXp x64 BETA i hadn' any problem... (winXP 64 doesn't admit the 32 bit driver=
Which driver i'm supposed to install? to INSTALL winxp64 on a SATA RAID and make it boot from there?
    Thaks a lot

HI! i'm the one wih the raid problem on a k8n neo2....
That's what a i Did.. i unpacked the exe and copy the files in a floppy... question is: if i do that, windows instaler askme for some files that aren't in the .exe, anway it reconices the raid and everithing goes fine until the first BOOT on windos... it shows a blue screen, butremoves it so fast that i cant read it or pause the system. But i know it's a raid problem because if i install it on a ide disk it works.
The nforce3 drivers are almost a year old, and i'm not sure if nforce4 is compatible...
I think the're compatible because if you enter in msi driver download page and select my model, they put the Nforce3 and nforce4 for win64 and my model is only nforce3. The thing is they havent released the nforce3 for WIN 64.... So.. It's normal that win asks me for some files that ain't in the .zip file (i extracted the files o course) and Which driver should i put the Nvidia one year old nforce3 or the new nforce4. (the nforce3 for 32 bits is rejected by windows) or... i have to wait the new nforce3?

The system cannot access the boot device. Often, this message signifies a disk controller
configuration problem or an error in accessing the hard disk. This clearly indicates that
Windows has lost access to the system partition during startup.
Another possible cause is that, during initialization of the I/O system, the driver for
the boot device failed to initialize the boot device (device not available, SCSI error).
Another possibility is that the file system could not recognize the data on the boot
device. The message also might mean that a virus has infected the boot sector.
I recommend you to open a case with us for further troubleshooting.

  • WinXP PRO install issue with SATA RAID floppy on P45D3

    Hello,
My objective is to set up 2 RAID volumes (one in RAID0 + one in RAID1) using Intel RAID Matrix Manager.
After having enabled RAID mode on BIOS, created the 2 RAID volumes and pressed F6 at the beginning of WinXP PRO installation without any problem, I am stuck when one file from Intel SATA RAID driver floppy needs to be written on the disk.
The problem appears after having confirmed the partition I want to install WinXP on. I got the following message:
"Cannot write iaStor.sys" . And I have to cancel the installation.
I do not know where this file has to be written ... Additionally, this file was perfectly read (and written somewhere) just after having pressed "S" and provided the floppy during the first phase of WinXP installation.
Any suggestion to help me ?
    Thanks

How did you solved this ?
I Googled and found this page which was very useful (the blue text is a link; you can click on it).
In fact I already knew how to do it using nLite (which I normally use), but now I tried their F6 floppy advice for educational purposes and that worked as well!
Key is that the files have to be present twice, on different locations on the floppy...

  • Undocumented(?) boot problem sata

I have a strange problem while booting of my sata drive. When i first press the power on button BIOS can't find a valid bootsector if i press reset after this message the computer will boot and give no errors and run without any stability issues. If i need to restart my computer from within Windows XP no error message is given while passing BIOS and no problem occure. I use the promise ID0 which detects my sata drive no problem.
I suspect that the problem lies with the selection of the bootsequeance in the BIOS SETUP. the setting there i use is:
    1 floppy or dvd-drive
2 BBS (raid) sata 378... this could be the problem because i don not use raid but there aren't any other boot devices with sata avalible.
i tried using the via controler but that did not use.
    any help would be welcom

    Sebbie,
Sounds like bios is trying to read disk before it is up to speed. There are settings in disk properties pages to slow down access.
However, if you use boot sequence , Floppy, CD, BB - SATA, enable other boot devices, and enable floppy seek, it may have same effect.

  • K8N Neo2 SATA Raid problem finally solved

    Hi guys,
finally got my SATA Raid 0 array to work.
Problem was that XP didn't find a correct array on installation although i used F6
to load drivers from disk. Sometimes it didn't detect any hard disk, sometimes
it showed two hd's and an array and so...
The whole spectrum of errors mentioned here over the last days and weeks...
I tried different bios like 1.1, 1.2, 1.2b5, 1.3b5 and i got the newest drivers
directly from nvidia as mentioned in some other thread. Nothing worked.
One should think that nvidia would have the latest drivers... but that was the
    major fault.
As mentioned in a different thread i downloaded the unified nforce drivers from
nvidia's homepage and extracted the ide drivers to a floppy. I used these drivers
in all of my attempts and it never worked..
Yesterday i downloaded the MSI Nvidia nForce3 System Drivers package 5.03 from
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/download/dld/spt_dld_detail.php?UID=607&kind=1
and compared the version numbers to the files from the nvidia package.
The relevant files nvatabus.sys and nvraid.sys are version 5.10.2600.412 from
nvidia while the MSI versions are 5.10.2600.446 !!
I put these files on the disk, set up my bios (default 1.1) from scratch, started XP installation,
hit F6, loaded the new drivers and voila... one 230 gb array ready for installation
Took me FOUR days to figure this out. THANK YOU MSI support team,
wherever you are.... (definitely not working on an updated hp)
So to put it in one line:
What really worked for me were the drivers from the MSI nforce3 driver package 5.03
No messing around with beta bios, no voltage tweaking or SATA 3/4 preferred
    or DIMM Slot preferred crap.
Of course you have to set up an raid array as described in rsheppicks raid setup guide
Only thing about bios versions is that only in bios 1.1 i got an array shown in the
    hard disk boot priority list
So i hope this helps you guys out there that are having troubles setting up SATA Raid.

OK now! Dag, I was going crazy. I had two brand new Raptors and was trying to hook them up in a RAID 0 config. I am no dummy. It would hang at detecting arrays. I could not figure it out for the life of me. I will not talk about all of the combos that I tried. My buddy told me to try datalifeguard from WD. I did. Well, one HD showed no serial number in the extended test. An error message popped up. Said the drive was not working. So, Newegg sends me a dead drive and wastes days and days out of my life. I hooked up the one good drive just now. What do I see? For the first time in my life, I am seeing the raid bios! This almost cost me a divorce. Seriously though, the wife would come in and rub my shoulders like a fighter after a few hours of getting my azz whipped by this new rig. I am now going to make the floppy with the newer drivers like was done here. Just incase. I am in Raid bios now in the other room. Time to go set up XP on one drive for now. I refuse to wait for the RMA'ed second Raptor.

  • W8.1/W7-64 dual boot, dual drive (SSD & SATA) GPT/MBR problems

I'm posting in both the W8 and W7 forums because I'm not sure which is more appropriate.
    Setup:
New Dell XPS8700 with Windows 8.1 installed on a 256GB SSD drive.  I upgraded to W8.1 Pro.
    2nd drive is a 2TB SATA.
    Goal:
    Keep W8.1 Pro on SSD.
Install W7 Ultimate 64 (legal copy, installation disk) on SATA Drive.
Select which one I want at boot.
    Main Issue
Cannot easily choose which OS to log into.  See  Dual Boot Problems and Current State for details.
    Background: W7 Installation Probems
    1. I disabled Secure Boot in the BIOS and Fast Startup in Windows 8.1
    2. I created 3 partitions (D, E, F) on the SATA drive (a GPT drive)
    3. Used the Advanced Option in W8 to boot from the DVD (absurd),
    4. Windows 7 started setup from the DVD but at the initial screen (Language, Country), it hung. Hard. No keyboard, no mouse.  Had to turn off computer.
    5. Using F12, selected legacy boot from DVD.  Now the installation got beyond the first screen. I selected Custom Install.  When I tried to install to the E: partition, I got the message that W7 could not be installed on a GPT drive.  From
a lot of research and reading, I'm guessing this is because I chose a legacy boot. But, please, note:  the only reason I did a legacy boot was because I could not get past the first screen with a "normal" CD/DVD boot,
    6. So, I went back into W8, deleted the volumes on the SATA drive, changed it to MBR, recreated the volumes.
    7. Using F12, again selected legacy boot from DVD and was able to install W7 on the E: partition, except that every reboot during the installation process got me back into W8, so I had to restart with the F12 option/legacy boot to finish W7 installation.
    8. Finally got W7 installed. Logged in. OK so far.
    Dual Boot Problems
    1. No boot menu.  Computer booted directly into W8.1. And, yes, Fast Startup in W8.1 still disabled.
    2. Downloaded and installed EasyBCD.  Created boot menu for W8.1 and W7 with W8.1 the default.
    3. Reboot, select W8.  Fine, I'm into W8.1
    4. Reboot, select W7. All I get is one bar of hieroglyphics across top of screen.  Hard freeze.  Had to unplug computer.
    5. Do an F12 reboot and select legacy boot from the SATA drive.  Get a different boot menu  with Windows 7 on top and W8 Media version below.  Select W7.  It loads and I log in.
    6. Do an F12 reboot and select legacy boot from the SATA drive. This time, select W8.  Get an error that it can't find W8.
    Current State
    1. The default boot into W8 works fine.
    2. Can't get into W7 unless I do an F12 legacy boot from SATA at startup.
    3. If I do an F12 legacy boot from SATA, I can't get into W8.
I do not want to rely on F12 for 2 reasons: first, I want W7 to be my default working enviroment. Please do not try to convince me that there is no good reason for that.  I want to do this, have legal, paid for copies of W7 (actually, I now have four.)
Second, it will make installing W7 updates nightmarish since I'll have go go through the whole F12 thing for every reboot.
I am assuming that the problem stems from the original GPT/MBR  split (with the SSD being GPT and the SATA being MBR) - although I could be wrong.  And, remember, the only reason I changed the SATA from GPT to MBR was because the W7 setup froze
at the initial screen when I first tried to install W7 with a normal boot from DVD.
    Things I've tried:
    1. Via W8, got to a command prompt where I ran bootsect.exe /scanos.  The result was that it found NO Windows Installations. Obviously incorrect.
    2. Uninstalled EasyBCD from W8.
    3. Rebooted.  Same boot menu as before: W8.1 on top, Windows 7 below (as I had set things up in EasyBCD).
    2. Via W8 Command Prompt did a bcdboot c:\windows to try to get GUI boot menu.  Got the error message: failure when attemptng to copy boot files.
What I want to do seems to me to be quite simple: run W8 from the SSD, run W7 from the SATA.  It's my understanding that I should be able to install W7 on a GPT drive and that would, I am hoping,
solve the boot menu problem.  But see Installation Problems above: I couldn't do the default boot from the DVD and install W7 because it froze at the first screen.  Is there some other way to get past the freeze and install W7 to a GPT?
I've been working on this for two weeks now, have read more articles, watched more YouTube videos than I care to list. Need Help Desperately.

    SOLUTION:
The problem I described above stemmed from the fact that I had been unable to install W7 without using the legacy option. (The W7 installation would freeze at the first screen.)  That created the boot incompatibilities between W8.1 and W7because I had
to use legacy for the latter but not for the former.
It turned out that the USB ports were the basic problem.  The Windows 7 installation program doesn't recognize USB 3.0 ports. Unfortunately, the A08 BIOS in the XPS 8700 -Special Edition (as of late Dec. 2014) has only 3 options for enabling/disabling
the USB ports: Front, Top, Back.  The back panel has a mix of USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports and I needed a 2.0 port for the mouse and keyboard to work.  However, disabling the Front and Top USB ports was sufficient. The W7 install no longer froze.
So, from my W8 installation, I wiped out the SATA drive, changed it back to GPT, partitioned it, disabled the Front and Top USB ports in the BIOS and booted from the W7 DVD.  The installation went fine.  After installing the network driver, downloaded
previously, and updating W7, I installed the USB 3.0 drivers and then re-enabled the Top and Front in the BIOS.
So, now the EasyBCD boot options work just fine.  Both drives are GPT. No legacy options.
