Another X11 Mystery

Please Help: I've "successfully" installed X11 several times -- first from the "X11SDK.pkg" file, and then from my original disks using the "X11User.pkg" file -- but I still can't find the application on my computer! It's not in utilities, and spotlight can't find it. What is going on?

after installing via the supplied DVD I found the X11 stuff
on MacHD - applications - utilities
I have placed X11 on my list of automatic start items so that
when other applications (such as IRAF) need an X11 item
it is available.
hope this helps - nigel douglas

    I connect to an HP-UX via ssh. There I access, or need to access, a suite of applications. This suite has 5 applications, all launched via .sh script. One of the applications is a command line interface for the application suite. When I run the .sh to launch this portion of the suite, everything works like a charm. Another portion of the suite launched via a different .sh [same folder] and it is graphical. It too launches just fine. The other portions, they are graphical too, do not launch. Well they launch their login window, I can login, the splash screen appears and then quickly, too quickly, disappears. The app never populates a window and there is no process running. SO ... why would some portion of an application launch just fine and others not? Also, using Exceed for windows on various windows boxes, the applications ALL work. My Mac is the only Mac and the only computer experiencing the issue.
    Ideas? Help...? Recap - Two graphical [GUI] applications run and one cmd line app work... Two graphical [GUI] apps do not....

    Hi Ashler,
    > what is the difference?
       If ssh -Y, which is more permissive, ssh -X won't work. Is there anything in the logs when the apps crash? You can read more about the X11 Security Extension Specification by downloading the PDF document from security.pdf.
       The use of the -Y option will cause all X11 apps that you forward to be treated as "trusted". In the X11 Security Extension Specification, this means that the application can be trusted to be harmless and thus that security may be lax. For instance, xclock only conveys the local time and this information can be compromised without serious risk. However, if you designate a forwarded word processor app as "trusted", you are saying that your keystrokes need not be closely guarded. If the app is specified as "untrusted" it is isolated, preventing the sharing of those keystrokes. Of course it's difficult for most apps to function in such isolation.
       Older versions of ssh were found to cause the client xauth vulnerability described in SSH client xauth Vulnerability. When they communicate the (usually MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1) cookie for your local XServer to the remote machine, it is placed in the remote machine's authorization cache for use by X11 apps to negotiate connections with your local XServer. Thus, if the remote machine's authorization cache is compromised, so is your XServer.
       To minimize the risk, when ssh connects with the -X option it sends an untrusted cookie to the remote machine so that X11 applications that obtain authorization with this cookie are marked as untrusted and restricted in what they can do. While this is safer, the X11 Security Extension Specification is in its infancy and many apps crash as a result of the limitations. Thus the -Y option is often necessary. However, it is less secure and should only be used when necessary!

  • Yet another Mac Book Pro (A1211/2.33 GHz) freeze problem

    Hi everyone,
    I have yet another freeze mystery, if people fancy having a crack at it.
    I had this notebook for about 4 and a half years and it served me well until 2 months ago. It is a 15' MBP from December 2008 (A1211) with a 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo and 2GB of RAM.
    Now I constantly get lags or freezes while I am using it.It manifests itself via the beachball and a frozen screen. First, I thought it was the hard drive but I replaced it with a tested new one and I still get the same behaviour. The reason I thought it was the HD is that it seems to freeze often when there was a lot of access to HD or memory. For example, firefox would cause a freeze quite often when it was trying to access the cache or history. I get the same behaviour when trying indexing my music for the genius feature. Often when I close applications, it will halt the system for about 2 minutes.
    I think the number of lags also correlates with temperature. I am pretty sure that the notebook's heat diffusion properties has deteriorated strongly over the past year as it seems to be using the fans a lot more extensively. The heatsink seems to get really hot these days as well. So my next step would be checking the thermal paste on the heat sink. Before I am going to do that, I want to consider any remaining options as dismantling the laptop up to the heatsink is a bit of a pain.
    My gut feeling would be that it has to do either with the memory or maybe some 'bridge' that transfers the data between HD, GPU, CPU and memory. I am aware that bridge is the wrong word and I am simplifying the architecture of the mainboard too much, but I am sure you get what I mean. The data rate between some of those is inhibited.
    The reason why I am saying some is that often the system seems overwhelmed by the amount of commands, just sits there and then resumes executing all of them as it had taken a break. This can be easily seen when streaming video in a web browser. I often get the beach ball and my whole screen freezes, but the movie, or at least the sound, keeps running in the background. After a while it usually resumes and shows the movie at the current playing position. Sometimes it doesn't recover, not even after 30 minutes and I have to switch it off.
    I hope I provided enough information for you guys to have a think about this.
    Any help in this matter would be gratefully appreciated.

    Before re-installing the operating system, which might also work, I found this article helpful:
    http://macs.about.com/od/usingyourmac/qt/Fix-Spod-How-To-Fix-A-Spinning-Pinwheel -Of-Death.htm
    I've followed the directions since they seem to make sense and am waiting for the next Pinwheel of Death. They seem to be saying the same thing you are Chris, but ascribe the problem to 'permissions' which are fixable (gasp) via the OS disc utility.

  • Fonts missing in X11

    I have been using X11 for some time now, mostly for GIMP. I have noticed before that not all my fonts were available in X11/GIMP, but didn't really care. I tought it had to do something with GIMP. Today I installed another X11 application (Inkscape) and I noticed the same lack of fonts.
    I don't know much about X11 and I thought TrueType fonts were not compatible, but I checked some of the available fonts, and among them there are also TTF's.
    Now I guess that only fonts I installed recently are missing.
    To make a long story short, I don't get it. Has anyone encountered this problem and - better - has a solution? (Maybe copying fonts to another directory?)
    Thanks in advance.

    In MacOS X, fonts can be found in three different places: /System/Library/Fonts (default system fonts, best left unmolested to avoid system instability), /Library/Fonts (general purpose fonts available to all) and /Users/<user>/Library/Fonts (personal fonts only available to that particular user). Issues can arise like for example installing fonts with one account and having them be placed in that account's Fonts folder, then not finding them when using another account. Or having fonts with the same name (maybe different versions) duplicated in the previously mentioned directories.
    First step would be to run Font Book, located in Applications, and do a Resolve Duplicates on its Edit menu. Then click on All Fonts in the Collection column, click on any font in the Font column, do a Select All from the Edit menu so all fonts are highlighted, then do a Validate Fonts from the File menu. Review any serious problem, if found, disabling or removing the appropiate font file. Like I mentioned before, font files found inside /System/Library/Fonts should best be left alone, disable or delete fonts from the other directories; these fonts were placed by Apple in the base O.S. installation and are generally trouble-free.

  • X11 printing issue

    I'm using X11 and OpenOffice 2.3. My printer is a Canon i860 connected via USB. I installed OO without issue and it runs fine, but I'm unable to print anything from OO. All other apps print without issue. When I select Print in OO something is sent to the printer; it chugs along very slowly as if printing something but the page ends up blank.
    OO Help refers to something called Ghostscript. I checked out the link and was led eventually to other pages about things such as GIMP, Gutenprint, and CUPS. However, I'm unable to find anything that clearly describes how to set up my printer so I may print to it from OO.
    Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    The only time I loose X11 focus, is when another window grabs it. For example if Growl throws up a message, I sometimes loose focus, or Gmail Notifier displays an alert, or another X11 window is created.
    Or if I accidentally let my thumbs touch the track pad and the mouse is not over my X11 window (which of course is my bad).
    Otherwise, my X11 sessions keep their focus.
    Has this started after a specific Mac OS X update? Or has it been happening for a long time on your system?
    The 2 systems I use X11 on are an iMac 10.6.2 and a MacBook 10.6.4. I have not installed 10.6.5 yet.
    Oh yea. You may want to discuss X11, Terminal, and Unix issues in the Mac OS X Technologies > Unix Forum

  • TM backs up way more than it "Prepares" to back up.

    I've been using Time Machine without problem for some weeks now.
    Today I plugged the firewire drive into my Powerbook and opened up Time Machine preferences to watch what happened (as is my practice). It did a "Preparing" phase for a normal period of time and then said it was going to back up roughly 7 MB of data. This matched my expectations.
    However, when the progress bar and numeric indicator both said it had gotten that far it just kept going!
    The progress bar remained at 100% and BOTH the numeric target of how much to backup and the count of how much had in fact been transferred increased together.
    By the time it reached 1 GB I decided to check the Console. There were no error messages in the Console. It did however have one oddity. It said that a backup had been requested due to disk insertion (which was correct), and that a "standard" backup had started. And then, shortly after that, there was ANOTHER message that a backup had been requested by the automatic scheduler.
    That may be nothing but it was the only odd thing in there.
    The backup was still going -- and rather more slowly than I'm used to for large TM backups.
    Eventually it completed, having transferred 4.3 GB -- way more than I expected but of course by no means anywhere close to a full system backup.
    I checked the Console again and found the normal messages: 4.3 GB transferred, no pre- or post-backup thinning required, nothing deleted.
    I did a Disk Utilities Verify Disk on both the main hard drive and the Time Machine drive, as well as a Repair Permissions on the main hard drive. No problems reported.
    I rebooted and commanded another backup. This one completed normally having transferred under 1 MB.
    So again, the only odd thing I've been able to find was the Console report of the automatic scheduler having requested a backup while a backup was already in progress due to disk insertion.
    I poked around in the Time Machine itself and could find no problems with this extra large backup, the one I did after it, or any of the prior history.
    So there appears to be no actual damage done, although the size of that backup remains a mystery -- as does why it didn't show up as the target amount after the "Preparing" phase.
    And oh, yes, the actual space consumed on my main hard drive has not changed. So I haven't suddenly acquired 4 GB of new stuff somehow. Which means the 4.3 GB backed up must have represented changes of some sort as opposed to new stuff.
    I thought that Time Machine might have somehow picked up stuff from another Mac on the LAN, but the Time Machine display does not let you select the shared portion of a networked computer so apparently not.
    Anyway, another TM mystery.
    --Bob

    No I've done multiple, hourly incremental backups since the QuickTime update. The size of the first of those backups after applying the update was reasonable given the size of the update and the files likely altered. The incrementals after that were all modest and thoroughly in accordance with the sorts of activities I had been doing.
    (For folks reading this after the fact, the backup in question happened BEFORE Apple came out with the 2007-9 security update released later that same day. Also, I've got one virtual environment file -- a Virtual PC file -- but that's around 10 GB so it couldn't have been party to this 4.3 GB mystery backup. And it wasn't touched/modified since the prior incremental anyway.)
    The weird thing is the idea that "Preparing" came up with a figure that matched my expectations (around 7 MB), but then the actual backup blasted right past that and just kept climbing to 4.3 GB.
    Also, there wasn't anything that I was doing during that backup that might have invalidated the "Preparing" results. I specifically wanted to sit there and watch it complete the backup after I plugged in the firewire disk. I've been looking for cases where the backup appears to get hung up during the data transfer, only to complete after an unexplained pause of a minute or so. So I plugged in the disk, opened Time Machine preferences to see what happened, and just sat there watching it.
    In this case the approx. 7 MB declared by "Preparing" transferred without any significant pauses and then I marveled as it just kept going. I didn't actually do anything until it crossed 1 GB, at which point I went to open the Console to see if it had any explanation.
    Another significant factor, I think, is that the speed of the transfer was fairly slow. I've done multiple GB Time Machine backups (as when that Virtual PC environment file changes), so I have a feel for how fast this firewire 800 drive will do that. And this 4.3 GB transfer was quite a bit slower.
    If I had to guess, I'd say that Time Machine was doing some re-writing of stuff FROM the Time Machine disk TO the Time Machine disk (so that the firewire speeds affected the data transfer twice). But there was nothing in the Console logs that suggest anything like that was happening. Alternatively Time Machine may have been reading data across the network and transferring it to the Time Machine disk. That too would account for the speed difference. But I can find no files in the Time Machine histories indicating that anything like that might have happened.

    Hi Susan
    Are you using a X11 emulator like Exceed ?
    Or let me know if you are using another X11 emulator.
    then try this:
    Solution Description
    Exceed 6.0.1:
    - Run Xconfig (Start->Programs->Exceed->Xconfig)
    - Double-Click "Video"
    - Set
    Server Visual: PseudoColor
    - Reset Server as proposed by Xconfig
    Exceed 7.1.0:
    - Run Xconfig (Start->Programs->Hummingbird Connectivity V7.1->Exceed->Xconfig)
    - Double-Click "Screen Definition"
    - Set
    Server Visual: PseudoColor
    - Click OK
    - Double-Click "Protocol"
    - Uncheck "Use 32 Bits Per Pixel For TrueColor"
    - Reset Server as proposed by Xconfig
    Otherwise directly on Solaris please control that :
    Check if the monitor has minimum 256 color.
    Run the following command from the Operating System command line
    COLOR=`/usr/openwin/bin/xwininfo -root 2>&1`
    if [ `echo $COLOR | grep -i depth | awk '$2>=8 {print "good"}' | grep -c "good" ` -ge 1 ]
    then
    echo "Adequate"
    elif test -z "$DISPLAY"
    then
    echo "DISPLAY is not set"
    elif [ `echo $COLOR | grep unable | wc -l` -ge 1 ]
    then
    echo "Cannot open DISPLAY"
    else
    echo "Need at least 256 colors"
    fi

  • GROUP and MAX Query

    Hi
    I have two tables that store following information
    CREATE TABLE T_FEED (FEED_ID NUMBER, GRP_NUM NUMBER);
    CREATE TABLE T_FEED_RCV (FEED_ID NUMBER, RCV_DT DATE);
    INSERT INTO T_FEED VALUES (1, 1);
    INSERT INTO T_FEED VALUES (2, 1);
    INSERT INTO T_FEED VALUES (3, 2);
    INSERT INTO T_FEED VALUES (4, NULL);
    INSERT INTO T_FEED VALUES (5, NULL);
    INSERT INTO T_FEED_RCV VALUES (2, '1-MAY-2009');
    INSERT INTO T_FEED_RCV VALUES (3, '1-FEB-2009');
    INSERT INTO T_FEED_RCV VALUES (4, '12-MAY-2009');
    COMMIT;
    I join these tables using the following query to return all the feeds and check when each feed was received:
    SELECT
    F.FEED_ID,
    F.GRP_NUM,
    FR.RCV_DT
    FROM T_FEED F
    LEFT OUTER JOIN T_FEED_RCV FR
    ON F.FEED_ID = FR.FEED_ID
    ORDER BY GRP_NUM, RCV_DT DESC;
    Output
    Line: ----------
    FEED_ID     GRP_NUM     RCV_DT
    1     1
    2     1     5/1/2009
    3     2     2/1/2009
    5
    4          5/12/2009
    Actually I want the maximum date of when we received the feed. Grp_Num tells which feeds are grouped together. NULL grp_num means they are not grouped so treat them as individual group. In the example - Feeds 1 and 2 are in one group and any one of the feed is required. Feed 3, 4 and 5 are individual groups and all the three are required.
    I need a single query that should return the maximum date for the feeds. For the example the result should be NULL because.. out of feed 1 and 2 the max date is 5/1/2009. For feed 3 the max date is 2/1/2009, for feed 4 it is 5/12/2009 and for feed 4 it is NULL. Since one of the required feed is null so the results should be null.
    DELETE FROM T_FEED;
    DELETE FROM T_FEED_RCV;
    COMMIT;
    INSERT INTO T_FEED VALUES (1, 1);
    INSERT INTO T_FEED VALUES (2, 1);
    INSERT INTO T_FEED VALUES (3, NULL);
    INSERT INTO T_FEED VALUES (4, NULL);
    INSERT INTO T_FEED_RCV VALUES (2, '1-MAY-2009');
    INSERT INTO T_FEED_RCV VALUES (3, '1-FEB-2009');
    INSERT INTO T_FEED_RCV VALUES (4, '12-MAY-2009');
    COMMIT;
    For above inserts, the result should be for feed 1 and 2 - 5/1/2009, feed 3 - 2/1/2009 and feed 4 - 5/12/2009. So the max of these dates is 5/12/2009.
    I tried using MAX function grouped by GRP_NUM and also tried using DENSE_RANK but unable to resolve the issue. I am not sure how can I use the same query to return - not null value for same group and null (if any) for those that doesn't belong to any group. Appreciate if anyone can help me..

    Hi,
    Kuul13 wrote:
    Thanks Frank!
    Appreciate your time and solution. I tweaked your earlier solution which was more cleaner and simple and built the following query to resolve the prblem.
    SELECT * FROM (
    SELECT NVL (F.GRP_NUM, F.CARR_ID || F.FEED_ID || TO_CHAR(EFF_DT, 'MMDDYYYY')) AS GRP_ID
    ,MAX (FR.RCV_DT) AS MAX_DT
    FROM T_FEED F
    LEFT OUTER JOIN T_FEED_RCV FR ON F.FEED_ID = FR.FEED_ID
    GROUP BY NVL (F.GRP_NUM, F.CARR_ID || F.FEED_ID || TO_CHAR(EFF_DT, 'MMDDYYYY'))
    ORDER BY MAX_DT DESC NULLS FIRST)
    WHERE ROWNUM=1;
    I hope there are no hidden issues with this query than the later one provided by you.Actually, I can see 4 issues with this. I admit that some of them are unlikely, but why take any chances?
    (1) The first argument to NVL is a NUMBER, the second (being the result of ||) is a VARCHAR2. That means one of them will be implicitly converted to the type of the other. This is just the kind of thing that behaves differently in different versions or Oracle, so it may work fine for a year or two, and then, when you change to another version, mysteriously quit wiorking. When you have to convert from one type of data to another, always do an explicit conversion, using TO_CHAR (for example).
    (2)
    F.CARR_ID || F.FEED_ID || TO_CHAR(EFF_DT, 'MMDDYYYY)'will produce a key like '123405202009'. grp_num is a NUMBER with no restriction on the number of digits, so it could conceivably be 123405202009. The made-up grp_ids must never be the same any real grp_num.
    (3) The combination (carr_id, feed_id, eff_dt) is unique, but using TO_CHAR(EFF_DT, 'MMDDYYYY) assumes that the combination (carr_id, feed_id, TRUNC (eff_dt)) is unique. Even if eff_dt is always entered as (say) midnight (00:00:00) now, you may decide to start using the time of day sometime in the future. What are the chances that you'll remember to change this query when you do? Not very likely. If multiple rows from the same day are relatively rare, this is the kind of error that could go on for months before you even realize that there is an error.
    (4) Say you have this data in t_feed:
    carr_id      feed_id  eff_dt       grp_num
    1        234      20-May-2009  NULL
    12       34       20-May-2009  NULL
    123      4        20-May-2009  NULLAll of these rows will produce the same grp_id: 123405202009.
    Using NVL, as you are doing, allows you to get by with just one sub-query, which is nice.
    You can do that and still address all the problems above:
    SELECT  *
    FROM     (
         SELECT  NVL2 ( F.GRP_NUM
                   , 'A' || TO_CHAR (f.grp_num)
                   , 'B' || TO_CHAR (f.carr_id) || ':' ||
                                TO_CHAR (f.feed_id) || ':' ||
                                TO_CHAR ( f.eff_dt
                                            , 'MMDDYYYYHH24MISS'
                   ) AS grp_id
         ,     MAX (FR.RCV_DT) AS MAX_DT
         FROM               T_FEED      F
         LEFT OUTER JOIN  T_FEED_RCV  FR        ON  F.FEED_ID = FR.FEED_ID
         GROUP BY  NVL2 ( F.GRP_NUM
                     , 'A' || TO_CHAR (f.grp_num)
                     , 'B' || TO_CHAR (f.carr_id) || ':' ||
                                     TO_CHAR (f.feed_id) || ':' ||
                                     TO_CHAR ( f.eff_dt
                                                 , 'MMDDYYYYHH24MISS'
         ORDER BY  MAX_DT   DESC   NULLS FIRST
    WHERE      ROWNUM = 1;I would still use two sub-queries, adding one to compute grp_id, so we don't have to repeat the NVL2 expression. I would also use a WITH clause rather than in-line views.
    Do you find it easier to read the query above, or the simpler query you posted in your last message?
    Please make things easy on yourself and the people who want to help you. Always format your code so that the way the code looks on the screen makes it clear what the code is doing.
    In particular, the formatting should make clear
    (a) where each clause (SELECT, FROM, WHERE, ...) of each query begins
    (b) where sub-queries begin and end
    (c) what each argument to functions is
    (d) the scope of parentheses
    When you post formatted text on this site, type these 6 characters:
    before and after the formatted text, to preserve spacing.
    The way you post the DDL (CREATE TABLE ...)  and DML (INSERT ...) statements is great: I wish more people were as helpful as you.
    There's no need to format the DDL and DML.  (If you want to, then go ahead: it does help a little.) • Iphoto troubles, moving, editing, sorting, everything..

    Hi everyone, I just spent 4 hrs reading through most of the articles in here to find a solution. I am pretty convinced that I am the first one in here with this problem, unless I missed out a few post. I apologize if you have answered this problem before and you would be repeating yourself. I would like to thank everyone who will be answering or even reading my post.
    Like a lot of them, I am new to MAC. But with the help of a good friend of mine, I am pretty savvy with this machine, however, iphoto is this naughty little fella that I just cant crack.
    A>>
    I have in "advance", unchecked "copy files to library" so when I import photos from my folders, it will only create a link in iphoto library, so it will not take up extra space on my hdd. Is this a good move? There is a good explanation why I choose not to keep the files inside iphoto library, because when I do keep them inside iphoto library and edit the folders or the file name, these photos will be missing from iphoto because their file names have been changed (unlike itunes where you can change the location and rename it a million times, itunes will still know where it is). And even if I do not mind this, when I do import the files which I have renamed back to iphoto, it says "cannot import into library because the folder is already in iphoto library folder". Because of this, I have to relocate the folder from "original" to some other location and then import it into iphoto library. its so troublesome but I have since adopted this trouble as a routine. Question: how do I rename the photos without having to have to import them into iphoto again and without having to move them to another location? the videos too, because I use iphoto to sort my videos as well and I tend to rename my videos too.

    I have been using iweb to update my photos on my server for months. One of the "photo" template has a fix frame where all I need to do is to drag photos from "media" into the frame and it will do the rest of the sizing for me. It has worked fine for me but just now when I wanted to add more pictures, I couldnt. Everytime I drag a photo from "media" it will just add on the page as the name of the photo like "dscn1000" as font instead of the photo. I tried dragging other photos and I notice only certain ones work and most of them doesnt work. I tried looking into iphoto to see if its because of the source file and I still cant figure it out. And while I was at that, I found out another very mysterious thing, see my next question.
    C>>
    Like I mentioned above, I have unchecked "copy files to library when importing" in iphoto's preferences. Hence, there are only links of the photos in iphoto library folder. If I am not wrong, every folder that I import into library, there will be a folder with the same name created in "original" and all the photos will have a little arrow stating that this is linked from another location. But when I was checking for my problem above (Problem B), I notice that out of the 10 albums I have imported into iphoto, only 6 of them have folders created in iphoto library "orignal" folder. The rest are not there and yet I see them in my iphoto.
    Gosh, I really hope you guys understand what I am saying in here coz its not easy trying to put in words these problems. If you do not understand me, pls ask me questions so I can explain it further. Any help is appreciated.
    Macbook Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Listen to TD - he's usually right.
    I'll add my 2¢, since you asked for opinions.
    First, you can't crack iPhoto because you're fighting against the way it is designed to work. iPhoto is a stubborn fella, you need to play by his rules or he throws tantrums.
    A>>
    My advice to you is to check that option and let iPhoto keep the files in its library. Why? Because when you don't it is very easy to break the link between the files and the database. If you move or rename files iPhoto won't be able to find them, regardless of whether the files are in the iPhoto library. At least with them in the library, they are accessible (provided you play by the rules) and organized. In addition, this makes it possible and easy to move or back up your entire library simply by moving or copying the iPhoto library folder. The alias mode complicates things - keep it simple, see how it's intended to work, and consider the alias mode as an option for expert iPhoto users (like Old Toad).
    As TD said, if disc space is an issue simply keep the whole iPhoto library on an external drive. Once you put it there and point iPhoto to it, it functions exactly the same as on the boot drive as long as the external is mounted.
    Question: how do I rename the photos without having to have to import them into iphoto again and without having to move them to another location?>>>
    Answer: You can't. Once a file is in iPhoto it stays there with the name it had upon import. Using Finder to rename files will break the link to the iPhoto database. Continue to do this your way and you may even see your entire database file become corrupt. In that case your photos would be safe but you would have to start over with a new library. (I suggest you do that now.)
    TIP: Many users prefer to import from the camera via Image Capture. Create a folder anywhere NOT in the iPhoto library and upload to the hard drive. Then rename your files in Finder to your heart's content. Once you are happy with the file names, import that folder into iPhoto and you will get a Film Roll named after that folder containing your photos with their new file names. You can then either keep the original folder for backup purposes or trash it -- IF you let iPhoto store your photos in its library.
    Check out this post by lori_diloreto: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=827283&tstart=0
    In it she explains her method of uploading from the camera to Image Browser, then importing into iPhoto. She has a very organized way of storing files for backup until she has enough to burn a DVD.
    B>>
    I don't use iWeb, so can't answer specifically what is happening. I do suspect that the reasons most of your photos don't work is because your system for using iPhoto just dosen't work. It just doesn't do well with all the renaming, moving, in Finder, then reimporting to try to repair the damage. Clearly some of the damage hasn't been repaired.
    C>>
    This observation, combined with the way you describe your workflow in section A, suggests to me that you haven't re-established the links to some of your rolls. Let's say I rename a roll in Finder, and lose its link to iPhoto. I can't just reimport the roll. After moving it out of iPhoto I have to delete the broken images in the iPhoto window from within the application. When iPhoto has forgotten about them entirely, I can then import them back into iPhoto. Skip this step, and your second attempt to import the same files will fail.
    iPhoto is a database application, not a file browser. Some people just want a file browser, and you may be one of them. But if you enjoy iPhoto's other capabilities, then why not give it a try the easy way? I suggest you begin with a fresh iPhoto library. Find your originals, import them in with the copy to library choice ON, and organize from within the application. TD has given you the ways to locate your photos once they are stored in the library. Look at this screen shot of how an iPhoto library is meant to be organized: http://homepage.mac.com/loridilo/.Public/iPhoto6.jpg [Again thanks to lori!] The application will work much more smoothly when you work with it and not against it.
    If you have any questions specifically for me, I'll be happy to answer. Otherwise, I've used up my 2¢ worth.

  • Installation fails

    what I had to do to get flash to install
    It is a tossup at to who has the worst software Billie gates
    or Adobe Flash Player ( AKA MacroMedia ). When I would
    click on a site or link that required flash to work, I would
    get a message that I needed Flash Player and a link to
    download it. When I clicked on the link, it would take me to
    the Abode Flash Player link. The only option is the
    " INSTALLATION" botton. So, I clicked on it.
    Then I get this:
    When you see the installation completion movie above and
    text below, your installation was successful. The installation
    should only take a minute or two on a 56k modem.
    And then NOTHING would happen it would just sit there for
    ever. The installation NEVER happened. It did not work.
    I finially figured out the if I go to START/RUN/
    then type the in the open box
    C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash
    then click OK
    It takes me to that file location on C: drive
    where there are 4 file
    then I double click on the file named FlashUtil9b.exe ( it
    is the file with the funnie looking "F" inside a circle )
    After double clicking on FlashUtil9b.exe file a window/box
    installer runs and Flash finally gets installed.
    I had to totally shut down my computer and/to reboot before
    Flash would work.
    I am still not sure if this Mickie Mouse Giration has to be
    preformed to get the software to install is because of
    Adobe Flash Player ( AKA MacroMedia ) or Billie gates ( AKA
    Mr. softie ) most likely BOTH.
    good luck

    I am baffled at how often, when frustrated with a product,
    people decide that the best place to vent is a users' forum. Some
    of the time it's the venter's fault, sometimes it's not. Either
    way, I can't understand how anyone could gain satisfaction by
    bashing the product that's being discussed in a forum full of
    faithful users. Another great mystery...

  • What's with midi controller 23 in audio instruments?

    If I record midi continous controller #23 to an audio instrument track it doesn't come up as a curve in hyperdraw. It comes up like a long straight line (at the top of the region) with dots and it can't be edited properly (the only possible values are 0 and 1.
    Controller data #23 recorded an a standard midi track works fine.
    I would like to know if there's something wrong with my setup or if anyone else gets this too.

    Obviously a display bug using range 0-1 instead of 0-127.
    Most stumping however that just controller #23 seems to be affected.
    Well, another little mystery of Logic...

  • My p3 keeps quitting unexpectedly- What do I do?

    Why is my ps3 quitting unexpectedly all the time?

    Another little mystery to solve.
    The use of the term "quitting" implies a Mac user.  A PC user would more likely say "crashing".
    I've noticed that Mac users are often imprecise, I guess because they're generally not required to know as much detail to be able to use their systems...  In this case "P3" and "PS3" most likely mean Photoshop CS3.  In that case I don't think we can imply much about what model/generation Mac Janet is using.
    Unfortunately, given these assumptions and the absence of the more detailed info requested by those above, about the only advice I can give are these things:
    Try clearing your Photoshop preferences to defaults.
    Run diagnostics on your computer.
    Please provide more detail on the environment in which you're working and what you're doing.

  • "your photostream could not be reset at this time due to a server error, try again later"

    Is anyone else having this issue. As according to Apple system status all icloud services are online & working. It has been like this for a number of days & is the same when i try and reset photostream in safari on my iMac & Firefox on my work's PC.
    Anyone know of a way of fixing it?

    Its now miraculously fixed itself after 8 days of not working.
    Another Apple mystery.

    Apparently either the content type in the SSL message stream is not compatible between 45 and 51 or the hand shake could otherwise not be handled. Contact support and ask them about migrating 45 SSL clients to 51.

  • Strange... No Printers Listed?

    I decided to finally set up a USB printer (Epson) with my Intel-based iMac, so I plugged it in, and connected it to one of my 3 USB inputs on the back of my iMac.
    Next, I went to my Print & Fax System Preference and of course found no printers in the list or selected in the printing pane. The Printer queue and Printer Setup buttons were also not active. So I went to my Printer Browser to add my printer or something generic that will work with my current Espson model. Now here's the weird part, it was completely empty... there was no list of printers/drivers to choose from or add. The same goes for my Printer Setup Utility... there are no printers listed?
    My iMac came installed with Tiger but I downloaded and updated the newest version (OS 10.4.8) from Apple.com a while ago.
    I then figured I may need to manually install the drivers myself from my OS X Install Disc. However, the Optional Installs.mkpg, which held the printer drivers was empty, actually everything is empty on the disc? Why does Apple bother to include an empty disc?
    Next, I went directly to my HD and found the EpsonPrintersDriver.pkg that I needed in the Receipts folder within my Library. So far so good... However it will not install an upgrade, and I continue to get an "errors installing software" message and to "please try installing again"
    I've also noticed that all the various plugin and drivers are already in the Printers folder, within the Library as well, including all the Espon printers.
    I'm honestly at a loss... and I'm hoping someone can please help?
    iMac Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi and thank you...
    I agree, having multiple print drivers that are not needed is wasteful and unnecessary, however, not having any at all appear listed in order to add is the main problem.
    I have the driver/plugin I need sitting inside my Epson folder, in the Printers folder within my Library, yet it will not show up in my Printer Browser in order for me to add it?
    My Printer Browser has both a Default Browser and IP Printer section or window, but in trying to configure my default or main printer from my computer, both the "Name" & "Location" tabs are inaccessible and the "Print Using" pull down menu tab used to select a driver or printer model is not active?
    This seems to be where my problem lies, and it's frustrating me to no end???
    I've also tried making a copy of my Epson folder containing all the different drivers and placing it into the other Printers folder in the Library found in my personal user folder which is automatically setup with my name. Ironically, today when I went to check and trash it, since it hasn't work, it was not there and apparently had disappeared... another Mac mystery?
    The computer sees and recognizes the printer and Epson model plugged into the USB port according to my System Profiler, so this is primarily a problem with my Printer Browser and the Printer Setup Utility as far as I can tell.
    After 3 days I'm exhausted with this and still hoping you guys can help resolve this issue for me.
    Mrtotes... thanks again, and please feel free to add any other impute or advise you may have?
