Another (yet different) finder freeze and login

So my usually bulletproof TiBook just started freezing at login. Specifically, 10.4.9 launches perfectly up to the login screen. I type in my password (I only have 1 user+root) and the login screen fades to blue. And stays with the Apple blue background. The hard drive doesn't spin-the computer just sits there.
Some useful info:
This started when I tried uninstall some user added preference panes that I didn't need/want anymore. One was the StuffIt AVR pane. The others were Silk, ShapeShifter, and Application Enahncer.
After logging in as a root user and deactivating AE, I was able to get a little further in logging in–my usual background would launch and I would get the Spotlight icon in the upper right, but that's it. If I move the cursor over the Spotlight icon, I get the spinning beach ball.
The last work I did before it started not logging in was to remove the StuffIt pane. I didn't think I had the uninstaller so I personall trashed the pane. Then I found the uninstaller and ran it, removing AVR and MagicMenu (which I think is the real culprit).
I've tried reinstalling StuffIt from the root account, resetting holding down power until the beep and restarting holding down apple-option-o-f. Needless to say, I never had a problem with all these preference panes until I went to uninstall them....
Thanks for the tips!

Hello theredf:
Welcome to Apple discussions.
You might try running repair disk from your software install DVD.
If that does not help, I would consider an archive and install:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
A&I will install a fresh copy of OS X while preserving your files, programs, and settings. As always, it is good practice to back up before any software changes. You would, of course, need to update to current software levels (OS X 10.4.10 is current).

I got my Macbook Pro from another user (different apple id) and now i'm not able to update iPhoto and iMovie. What can i do?

You need to contact Apple and transfer that computer, the serial number, into your name and your Apple ID. Then you should be able to update the included Apple Apps from the App store. No need to Re-buy them again.
    Caveat to the above.
If your Mac did not originally come with Lion Preinstalled, early releases of early 2011 models and older, and originally had Snow Leopard installed the original owner should of supplied the Mac OS X System Discs with the system. If that person didn't you should order them from Apple at a small fee, and don't lose them.

  • Finder freezes and does not respond

I have an iMac with an Intel Core i3, using Mac OS X - 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.  My finder continually freezes up on me and I have to re-launch the finder various times a day (I'm talking like 30 times a day sometimes).  I use a lot of actions in Photoshop and a lot of AppleScripts to make particular files all day long.  Sometimes Photoshop will hesitate for about a minute when trying to save tiffs - I usually re-launch the finder and it does fine for awhile.  I use to run a script that build my PDF file a certain way and would freeze up when it was using an action in the script to make a picture of it to put it on another server.  Now I'm using another more advanced script and it freezes inbetween the making of multiple PDF files - until I re-launch the finder, then it continues.  There have been various times no matter what I'm doin, the finder would - "not respond".  During these times it would make Illustrator and Photoshop to "not respond", sometimes I have to force quite programs, other times I just re-launch the finder and then everything responds good - for a time.  The odd thing about this, is I have swiched machines, using all the same versions and programs, scripts and actions, and still does the same thing.  I have moved around the room connecting to another ethernet thinking it might have been the connection, but no luck.  I seem to be the only one in my department that has these type of issues to this magnitude.  Other people here have had freezes and glitches, but not like me. I use a lot of personalized key commands and the only thing I can think of, is the combination of my personalized key commands in all programs, all the actions and all the scripts I use, may be a little too much for the iMac with Snow Leopard to handle.  Plus we are hooked up to multiple servers with the scripts telling certain files to go to certain directories.  Note: simply restarting does not fix any of this.  Does anybody have any ideas about this issue???

You can remove the volume from /Library/Filesystems/Xsan/config/automount.plist . Then you mount manualy with the following command:
    mkdir /Volumes/<volname>
    mount -t acfs volname /Volumes/Volnames
from xsan 2.0 you can use the xsanctl command to mount:
    xsanctl mount <volname>
I do not use 2.0 yet, so did not test it.
An empty automount.plist looks like this:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">

  • Finder freezes and Networking and Locked drives will not unlock

I have been having trouble with my Mini'S finder freezing when I try to connect to another computer. Sometimes it works OK but it often freezes, beachball and cannot relaunch finder, have to reboot. The mini is Intel Duo, Network is 6 windows machines and 1 g5 PPC 1.8 single. An Apple Airport Extreme, a Linksys router and a Buffalo router, I can connect to the Win machines no problem but , like I said, often when connecting to the G5 I get the Finder Crash, but only about 60 % of the time. I have sharing turned on, Personal and Windows on both machines. I am admin on both. Also the MINI drops Network connections which have been working for a few hours.
I am beginning to think the MINI's Network card is bad.
ANother maybe related issue, from the MINI, 2 drives on the G5 appear as Locked, I have repeatedly unlocked them with Xray and by the terminal, from the G5 (to which the drives are attached) the drives show unlocked but always from the mini they appear as locked. I have tried to unlock them form the MINIS terminal but get a long Beach Ball.
Both the G5 and Mini are running the latest OSX and everything else is updated.
Anyone else relate to these issues? thank you,
    Steve

  • Why does my Finder freeze and crash?

My Finder is stressing me out!
I was expereincing a very stressful situation with my Mac yesterday when it suddenly froze and wouldnt respond. When i restarted it it went to a blank white screen with no other progress. I reinstalled Mac OS X Lion, and the solution worked. My MacBookPro came back to life, and I didnt slit my wrists. However, there was one serious glitch that I havent been able to resolve since.
It's my Finder. I can view all the different folders on the left hand side except my Movies folder. When I click on it to see the files contained within, it freezes goes through the little rainbow ball for a while, then crashes. HELP!!!!!!

There are not too many ways to fix an iPad.  Try these.  Could try to hock up to iTunes and read the logs.
    Re-boot ipad.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until a red slider appears, then drag the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.  page 128 iPad user manual.
force power down if the above give you trouble.
Hold down both the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button. Ten seconds or more.  Hold until the Apple logo appears.

Restore to factory settings by loading the latest version of ios that your machine will support:
Do a full backup of your device.  Twice is best -- cloud and computer.
"You can use iTunes to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to factory settings and the latest version of iOS."
       http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

At last resort you could consider DFU (Device Firmware Update).  This could void your warranty.

  • Finder freeze and other problems since external hookup

I own a macbook pro and recently bought a 1tb Iomega external to back up. I loaded ran time machine successfully and loaded it with movies and since it hasn't worked correctly. It will not allow itself to be removed because it says I need to quit programs that may be using it (and only Finder is running). It will remove itself periodically.
Also, since I have owned it, Finder will freeze at least one time per use and never come out of it. I have to manually shut down the computer to have it become operational again (that is without the external plugged in). other programs work fine (I am currently using Safari while Finder is only a spinning wheel).
whenever I run disk utility on the external, it removes itself.
I know it may sound like it doesn't work at all, but i can successfully read and write on the external, when it is not frozen.
I tried to call Apple Support but likely enough, my phone support expired last month.
    any ideas?

    Hi bsugradsbm-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple Discussion boards
Did you reformat the drive using Disk Utility before you used it?
If not, try doing so and format it for MacOSX Extended. Otherwise, it sounds as if the drive is faulty and you should probably return it under warranty for one that works.

  • Finder freezes and applications crash once FileVault is enabled (OSX10.8 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 8 GB 1.067 MHz DDR3 RAM)

    Hola!
When Mountain Lion was released I upgraded from Snow Leopard. It worked fine for a week, but then once FileVault was enabled, the finder slowed down durasticaly. This continued to become worse over a few days until it froze all together and applications would just stop responding and quit.
Not only that but the last thing that happened was that I would boot up, type in my password, and the computer would start to log in. Then as though nothing had happened, it would return to the login screen. This would happen every time I loged in. I was unable to reach any other screen except the login screen. It wasn't the wrong password, because typing in the wrong password on purpose would result in the password box shaking to inform as such. I called apple tech support, we ran a PRAM zapping, and a number of other procedures to no avail. When I ran the disk utility and verified the disk, it said the file system and all else was just fine. However, it would'nt allow me to verify disk permission nor run any reparing. In the end I had to reinstall Snow Leopard and reinstall Mountain Lion from there.
Wondering if there is a solution already or if anyone else has experienced this or a similar problem.

    1. Yosemite, but you need to increase the amount of RAM in the computer before it can be upgraded past 10.6.8.
    2. The current version of Flash is compatible with 10.6.8; the OS being too old isn’t the cause of that issue.

  • Another, Yet Different, Importing Problem

I have two hdd and one is purely a storage. Wanting to upgrade to Win7 I backed up/exported my iTunes play list to my storage hdd. Did my Win7 upgrade reinstalled iTunes and went to import my playlist...I researched (Google) how first, to make sure to do it correctly but the only things that get imported are my custom play list names...NO MUSIC, MOVIES, APPS, TV SHOWS, MUSIC VIDEOS...I did all the computer OS things right, I have all my data still intact on my storage drive. But nothing seems to be importing to iTunes. If a similar problem has been asked already I do apologize...I did search and didnt find a post with a similar problem as I am having. Thank you in advance for any help/suggestions.

All right, So I fixed it. I think what I did before was "Export Library" to My Music folder in the storage drive...I opened up my fresh install of iTunes and went to File>Add Folder To Library...>My Music Thinking I would take all the media I had physically put on the hard drive only and try to pull purchased stuff from iPod...All of my data was there and iTunes restored all my play lists and all other purchased media just how I backed it up.

  • Strange freeze and login behavior in 10.4.6

Here's a weird one: the other day, shortly after I booted and opened Safari, my G3 iBook froze completely -- no cursor movement, nothing. I rebooted, but this time it took at least 5 minutes to reboot, and when it did, it presented me with the login screen (my iBook is normally set to automatically login under my user name). I entered my user name and password, but got the "screen shake", indicating it would not accept my user name and/or password. (and before you ask, both user name and password were entered correctly). Nothing would get it to work, so I rebooted from my other hard drive and ran DiskWarrior, which reported nothing wrong, but I replaced the directory anyway. I got the recalcitrant login screen again. I rebooted into the other hard drive again, ran TechTool Pro 4's diagnostics on the files and did a surface scan -- still no luck. I finally reinstalled the iBook's backup which was also on the other hard drive (thank heavens for SuperDuper!) and was able to get the iBook to boot normally.
Can anyone explain what may have happened, and how I can avoid it in the future?
    Thanks. . .

  • I broke my iPad but have another with different Apple ID and would like to get the movies and music I purchased from my Apple ID is that possible

I broke my iPad but I have another with diffrent Apple ID is it possible to get purchases from my first Apple ID

Everything should be kept on your computer and backed up.
Have you failed to do this?

  • I have two iPads....would like to take apps and music from old one (with different apple ID) and put all of them on new iPad (different apple ID and login)....how do I do this

Need help transferring info from ne iPad to newer one

You have to transfer all of your purchases into iTunes from the old Pad and then sync that content onto the new iPad. You have to be signed into the correct Apple ID each time that you want to sync with iTunes - on the iPad itself and in iTunes on the computer.
    Transfer purchases.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848
You have to use the same ID that you bought your apps with every time that you want to update those apps. You will have to continue to log in and out of both Apple ID's if you are going to continue to use content purchased with both ID's.
As soon as you download a past purchase with one of the ID's, you will associate the iPad with that ID and you may lock yourself out of the other ID for 90 days.

  • Finder is freezing and Can't repair permissions

I've been exporting some FCP files and when I go to finder and choose APPLE-I to get info on the files, the finder freezes and spins. When I try to force quit, finder is not responding.
I tried using my install disk to run repair permissions, thinking that might help but am unable to select repair permissions (it's grey), I can repair disk.
Not sure if the issues are related, but would love to solve them.
    Thanks.

You can't repair permissions on a data volume. It has to have a bootable OS X installation on it. As for the SBBOD, see http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/sbbod.html

  • Finder Freezing

    Hi,
After updating with the Combo updater 10.4.7, I am getting Finder freezing and the only way to get back access of my mac is to restart by holding the power button for a few seconds.
Luckly, I made a clone (Superduper) of my HD before updating. Can somenone help me so that I do not have to reclone back to 10.4.6
    Thanks,
    David

    Scapesulter,
Thanks for responding. Sometimes when I click on a folder in the finder, the dreaded Beachball appears and I would have to restart to get back access of my mac. If I navigate from the desktop, no problem, but as soon as I navigate from an opened application, it would sometimes freeze.
I repaired permissions, ran the full Cocktail maintenance and deleted the finder preference in my library folder.
    Regards,
    David

  • Finder, Mail and Safari unexpectedly quit

    Hello
I am having intermittent problems with MacBook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2GHz with 6GB RAM and a Seagate 500MB/7200RPM Snow Leopard OS 10.6.2
Mail will quit when I try to add an attachment
If I go to the Finder from another application, the Finder quits and windows disappear. If I select "new finder window" finder repeatedly quits. After 10 or fifteen times (usually I just restart) I can get the finder window to stay open.
Using Safari and selecting a file to upload causes Safari to quit. Firefox works fine.
I have done a clean install. Problems persist intermittently.
Any advice on how I can fix this? Thank you!
