Answer for no sound after installing QT 7.04
It took a while to find it on the discussion list but this is a link to the page that had two good answers. It only took me 20+ minutes of reading each post that had sound problems.

I did what he said and it worked - got my sound back, be sure to exit QT from the system tray after making the change and then open it up again. It does work.
mune had the goods on where to find an older copy of QT 7.03 & I-Tunes. Remove the troublemaker and then install the prior version. For the time being you might want to uncheck the automatic update until Apple gets the bugs out of this one.
I'm recovering from a hard drive loss so I had no choice but to install QT 7.04. From my vail of tears I beg you, back that stuff up!

I got it to work with windows 7 32 bit. I just went to hp website to support and downloads section. Type in your model number, then select windows xp as the operating system. Then download the audio driver and save it to your desktop. After the file is on your desktop you need to right click on it and click properties, then go to compatability tab and tell it to install as windows xp service pack 3. Hit apply then install. Hope it works for ya, worked for me.

I'm a novice when it comes to laptops, so here is the problem: My 3110ct has no sound after installing XP Pro. Didn't have sound when I bought it with another operating system on, report says no sound device installed.

If the sound card chip is damage I presume you will be not able to see the yellow exclamation belonging to the sound card in the device manager.
You bought this Portg as a second hand unit. Am I right?
So possibly the sound card is faulty.
The computer uses a ESS ES1978 (Maestro-2E) and ES1918 sound chip.
Check if you can find an XP sound driver in the internet. -

View Solution.I cannot find your audio driver on HP's support page, but I was able to locate this one, which is the same driver as yours, just the most recent version. According to what is listed, it supports Windows 8. Give it a shot and let me know if it works for you.

Is this a recent problem or has it been going on for some time. If you just updated to ML, you might want to confirm that you've update to the latest MS Office / Outlook patches.

NO SOUND AFTER INSTALLING WINDOWS 8.1
Hi, I'm hoping someone will be able to help. My sister has a compaq 58 laptop and after installing windows 8.1, now has no sound. The sound was there when 8.1 was installed but after logging off and logging back on again, the sound disappeared. We reinstalled windows 8.1 and same thing happened. We have run scans and got sound again but once again logging off and logging back on again, the sound disappeared, very frustrating.

I was afraid to touch my pc when the AUDIO was in a working state. However Microsoft logged me off with no fear and did not save the working state. What a great "glutware" corp. Having said that when the AUDIO is working it appears to work great! Sure wish HP/MICROSOFT could get their act together. Can you say "BASE BAND" , "DSP", "FIR" ETC. Well they think they know the fancy stuff. Now if they could just get it to function for normal people. Can you say "KISS".

After installing the new Adobe Flash Player 11.7 I have no sound.
I reinstalled, uninstalled and started the imac new but I find no solution.
When I'm starting the imac, I always heard the opening sound.
After searching and contacting the support with no results, I try to turn
up the volume at the source and connect the soundsystem again and
now can hear the music.
I think Adobe reduce the sound of the source at zero, and the imac
rest on the last position.

Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there, some things will change it for their own use, then not set it back. -
[SOLVED] No sound after installing pulseaudio
Hi,
I recently installed pulseaudio to be able to use skype since their update to version 4.3.
I installed with additional stuff using the command:
$ sudo pacman -S pulseaudio pulseaudio-alsa pavucontrol lib32-libpulse
After installing I ran the commands:
$ pulseaudio -k
$ pulseaudio --start
At this point, skype and sound were working properly again.
After rebooting my computer, I completely lost the sound. I tried killing and restarting pulseaudio and reinstalled twice, but I never managed to have to sound back since...
Any suggestions?

I recently helped my uncle install windows 7 on his HP Pavilion dv1710us Notebook PC
and there was no sound after installation.. i downloaded several drivers for the realtek high definition audio driver (R2.39, 38, 37, etc)
then i tried the original driver from the HP drivers page and installed it.
usually when there is no sound, there would be a red X on the volume icon, but when i installed the original driver from the HP drivers page, there was no more red X.. Thinking that the sound was fixed, I tried to go on youtube and watch a video... i see the green bar moving up and down on the volume slide, but then i can't hear anything.
So is there any realtek high definition audio driver compatible for windows 7 on the HP pavilion dv1710us?
Is there something I have to do, like right click on the application and then change compatibility settings?

Hi and thank you for your time. After installing the ios6.01 update i lost my sound on apps and videos. I rang customer support and as i was talking to them it magically reappeared. And now i have lost it again. No Sound after installing Xfce
Hello, I'm having a strange problem. After installing xfce I've got no sound in my system. I have an Asus Xonar DX and usually the only thing I needed to do after installing a new system was to select it in the audio controller but this time it doesn't work. I tried uninstalling xfce4-mixer and install paprefs pavucontrol and set the card there but it doesn' t work and I don't know what else to try.

After installing the new 2.1 firmware on my 1G iPod touch I can´t listen sound from YouTube, music and FlyCast internet radio, but I can listen sound from games, somebody have this problem? Is the new firmware causing this problem?

Well, i don't have a solution for you, but if your soundcard + hub act like that even under xp after a few weeks i would suggest to get a replacement, cause there might be a hardware-error that causes your problem. A software/driver problem sounds very unlikely to me. Satellite U300 - 11y - No sound after installing win XP, SP3 rc1
Finally got my U300 working with XP, but I can't get the sound working. Appropriate drivers are installed, but nothing. The hardware was working under Vista, so this seems to be a driver problem. I think the realtek installer for somereason doesn't completely finish the configuration.

Getting pretty nervous now, as I need sound for Skype in my business.

I had the same problem when trying to install XP on my U300. I now regetfully deleted the files I used, which is a shame - I did not know others had similar problems.
However, if my m serves me right, the second patch suggested by Pedro (KB835221) is the correct one.
The first one is the theoretical fix for HD audio, but SP3 RC1 will not allow its installation, since it thinks the patch is older than the service pack itself.
The second patch appears to be the same thing, but modified for SP3 to accept it.
The second patch should work, and after installing it, you should be able to install the sound drivers normally.
