[Answered] Is akamai screwing up Windows Update?

This problem has been solved here:
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/62b9fd5c-10b2-4266-bc15-fcf3e79d20d4/solved-windows-firewall-rule-that-allows-windows-update?forum=w7itpronetworking
Everything from here down is obsolete.
There are 2 URLs involved with Windows Update. They are
(This is an excerpt of the help page related to my Windows Update failure.) Put those URLs in your memory banks, and then take a look at this:
What I'm trying to do is get the IP for 'download.windowsupdate.com'. Why? Because you can't put 'download.windowsupdate.com' into an outbound firewall allow rule, but you can put an IP into an outbound firewall allow rule.
But look what happens to my ping. I ping 'download.windowsupdate.com' but get back the IP for 'a767.g.akamai.net'.
Holy Smoke! I've never seen that. The DNS request is being completely overwritten by a different DN. It's like email forwarding, or like HTTP redirection, but at the DNS level. whois download.windowsupdate.com fails. Looking up 'download.windowsupdate.com'
at Network Solutions fails.
Could this be what's causing my Windows Update to fail?
This thread is closely related to this thread:

Thank you for replying, mystifeid.
First, let's establish that prior to this evening (early morning now in the Eastern USA), everything worked except Windows Update. All I needed was an outbound firewall rule that would allow Windows Update. I've successfully created plenty of rules (I'm an
electronics engineer, formerly a developer at Intel). S.Sengupta gave me unwelcome advice. He wanted me to bring down my outbound firewall when all I need is a rule to allow Windows Update. Having responded with inappropriate advice that was not germane to
my issue, he did indeed poison the thread because no one at Microsoft will take my issue seriously after I reject his advice. And make not mistake, I reject his advice. Taking down the outbound firewall is dangerous and I will not do it. I realize that such
is the default setup, but that really makes the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security a sham, doesn't it. After all, why have a bi-directional firewall if you're going to open up outbound to any and all connections? I don't want to argue this point with
Microsoft technicians. If you insist that I have to take down the outbound firewall, then we might as well escalate this to Microsoft engineering right now and save ourselves a lot of typing.
Here's the rule I created to allow Windows Update. I named it "Allow Windows Update"
Name: Allow Windows Update
Group:
Profile: Public
Enabled: Yes
Action: Allow
Program: C:\Windows\System32\wuapp.exe
Local Address: Any
Remote Address: Any
Protocol: Any
Local Port: Any
Remote Port: Any
Allowed Computers: Any
Status: OK
Service: wuauserv
Rule Source: Local Setting
Interface Type: All interface types
Excepted Computers: None
Description:
As you see, I've enabled both the 'wuapp.exe' update launcher and the 'wuauserv' update service.
Kindly tell me: Why doesn't that rule work? Why can I not perform a Windows Update without bringing the outbound firewall down?
By the way, I took the advice a Microsoft technician gave earlier and now, only my Linux virtual machine can get on-line. The Windows host can't. I'm writing this in Firefox running in the Linux VM.
UPDATE: Windows host is back on-line. Windows Update still doesn't work, but the error code has changed to 8024402c (was 80072efd).

  • Internet Explorer 9 not showing as not installed when using Windows Update - Error: Code 9C48 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

I built a few new Windows Server 2008 R2 with SP1 VMs today and ran into a problem where Windows Update is not detecting the fact that Internet Explorer 9 is already installed. Internet Explorer 9 keeps showing up as an available update when
using Windows Update. When I try to install it as a test I get the error message: Code 9C48 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.
My normal build procedures include applying all the patches for the OS prior to any other work on the servers. The way I like to do the patching is to do every update other then IE9 in the begininng and once all the other updates have been
completed, install IE9 and then patch it if there are updates available. I followed this procedure on every build for the last year and I have not run into any issues until today. The only difference today is the latest patches that were released yesterday
April 10th, 2012. To test the theory that it may be one of the latest patches, I reinstalled Windows from scratch making sure to format the disks and then I installed IE9 right after the OS install without any other updates. Once the
server was rebooted, I checked Windows Update and Internet Explorer 9 still showed up as update (Not the Cumulative Update which normally shows up after an IE9 install) and yes, I did make sure to click the 'Check for Updates' link before I looked just
in case. My next test was to patch a couple of the servers I had built prior to April 10th, 2012. Those servers did not have any issues with the latest updates and they are not experiencing the same behavior as the newly built servers.
I ended up comparing the IE9 Version on the cleanly install OS (No updates were installed except IE9) and the servers I built last week which were patched. The versions are exactly the same.
My findings above lead me to believe that there is a problem with the latest IE9 install package (which includes the latest cumulative update) and the Windows Update detection component.
I guess I am looking for someone to report this up the chain to get this fixed so no one else runs into this problem. I know in some cases we may not be able to see additional IE9 updates until this is resolved.

I just started having the same problem.
I was creating a new VM in Vsphere from our 2008 R2 SP1 image and it hasn't been updated and repacked in a while, so i have to install about 60 updates, including IE9.
I went through my normal setup as i had just created 2 VMs and updated them on Monday with no problem.
I got the same error code as you. The install looks like it installed IE9, but the update is still showing up as available in Windows Update.
I deleted the VM, created a new one, chose all updates except IE, then did that and it still shows up again.
Then i deleted the VM, installed just IE 9 and it still shows up as available on reboot.
I have a script that i can use to reset/clear WSUS cache on the computer, (Software distribution folder, and the windows update log, and recreates a certificate), so i tried that and then rebooted and it still showed up.
I then decide ok, maybe the Image got messed up somehow, so i started creating a new 2008 R2 install from scratch last night and chose to update just IE9 as the first install. I did that, rebooted and it didn't show up in Windows Updates, so i though GREAT.
I proceed to kick off the 100+ downloads needed before i left and left the console up.
When i got in to work this morning, the updater seemed stuck on 31 of 102 updates, this one in particular: KB288516. I rebooted the computer, because it wouldn't stop and just seemed stuck since last night, which these updates should only have taken about
an hour to install at most. I log back in and sure enough, it now shows Internet Explorer 9 at the bottom of the update list as being needed for install.
I believe this is Patch Tuesday week, so maybe they screwed up something with the Windows Update detection engine, because it worked fine on Monday when i had to update IE9 on 2 VMs that i created.

  • Unable to boot after windows update

    Hello,
As is was trying to update windows today I didn't expect to lock up my computer, but right now i'm facing the blue screen of death at every startup. The startup repair is not helping.. So right now the only option i see is to reformat my C drive??
This was really unexpected, as I was installing a few of the optional windows updates (mostly drivers i think for the fingerprint reader, graphic card... ) when my pc crashed. I hope to recover some of the files on my desktop before reformating.
So i'm not really expecting too much help here because i can basically do nothing as even the startup repair is not working. But i'm wondering, are there any windows updates that should be avoided? I wish i knew what screwed up my pc. I'm runnign the w520 on windows 7btw.
    Thanks!!

  • Windows Update fails with 80244023

I am getting failures installing the following updates on Windows Server 2008 R2:

    Update for Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 (KB2891804)
I have been having this failure occur for about a week after a fresh install of the OS. I have done some network traffic analysis, and it appears that the servers hosting windows update are part of the problem (or my client is using old inaccurate information).
    For example:

this is one of the requests that is showing up in the log. If I manually browse to this file, even from a different device or a different network I get an error page:
    Invalid URL
    The requested URL "/msdownload/update/software/updt/2011/04/windows6.1-kb2506928-v2-x64-express_23d6b471222697d7fba8e25c305ab6d661dd4324.cab",
    is invalid.

I would like to finish this project, but need to finish patching this machine. Does this need to be addressed by Microsoft/Akamai or is there some way to refresh which servers Windows Update is using to actually download the content of the updates?
    Thanks,

  • Windows Update breaks Lenovo Miix 2 Sensors, system refresh unavoidable

    Hi everyone,
Been playing with the Lenovo Miix 2 for a few days now, and I have been experiencing some annoying issues.
I've done about 3x System refresh so far and on my 4th as I'm typing this...
I don't know the exact root of the problem, but I do know that one of the windows update is breaking the sensors causing it to malfunction and breaking some functionalities.
Accelorometer doesn't work at boot, need to disable and re-enable the sensor in device manager.
Trying to use the search or PC settings functionality in Metro UI freezes the tablet.
With each refresh, I've made sure that no driver updates are selected, but that didn't seem to help.
And the most annoying part is refreshing the tablet takes forever... (2-3 hrs)
If anyone knows has the same problem or any insight on what is causing this? please share your knowledge

  • Window update causing printer driver problems

Hi, I have a laptop running XP and wireless router (WAG54G) and a HP6380 All in one. About 2 nights ago a Windows update installed by itself and rebooted the laptop (even though I have Automatic Updates turned off as they seem to screw with anything these updates occur anyway grr)..
I went to try and print and found that the 6380 was missing from the list of available printers.. The problem is not with the wireless network (as that is connected and working). I am not sure what this windows update did.. but when I tried to reinstall the drivers for this printer from the disc, it recognised that they were already installed.. So I uninstalled them instead (and it picked up that only parts of the driver remained and it removed those parts).
So then I tried to do a fresh driver install.. which took a long time as it got stuck at the end...Eventually it came up with an error and so I tried to submit to HP - and was given a desktop icon to click on.. (HP Installation Icon - XP). I have tried it but it tells me to 1)reinstall driver (done that twice - well attempted anyway... or 2) troubleshoot Wireless printing (a non-issue at this stage given that I have no printer driver and I can use the wireless network for other things just fine)
Does anyone have any suggestions please> In the past when Windows updates have caused issues I have used System Restore to roll back but that is only a temporary solution - as Windows insists on updates that I dont want!
    Many thanks!

If you have the original HP software CD, look in the ccc/utils folder for an L3_unintsall (or similar).  Run it for a very thorough uninstall.
    Reboot.
Now, get the latest software for your printer from the "Support & Driver" link at the top of this page.  DO NOT reinstall from the CD (a good rule in general is to not use software CDs, but go to the manufacturer's web site for the latest and greatest).
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • How do I get back my bookmarks and history which disappeared after downloading critical Windows Updates?

On 10/16/14 I downloaded 11 critical Windows Updates (I have the 64-bit version of Windows 7 Pro).
All updates ran successfully, but after the updates, Firefox would not run. Instead I got the error “Couldn’t Load XPCOM”. Internet Explorer was working. I reinstalled Firefox . I did not delete it and then reinstall it, I just downloaded Firefox.
That worked and I can now use Firefox, but I have several other problems:
    • I lost all my Bookmarks
    • I lost some of my History. I can only view history for “Today” and “Yesterday” in the Library. I am missing “Last 7 days” (except for 10/16 and later) and “This Month” history view.
I have been trying to research how to fix this on my own for the past several days, even though I am very non-tech savy.
I tried the following, but none of these things has corrected the bookmarks or history problem:
    • I did a System Restore to 10/13/14
    • I tried to do a System Restore to 10/12/14. I got the error “Did not complete successfully. Unspecified error 0x8000ffff”.
    • I reset Firefox to its default state.
    • I tried to change the Privacy setting for Firefox history from “Remember History” to “Use custom setting for history” followed by checking “Remember my browsing and download history”, “Remember search and form history”, and “Accept cookies from site”. I am unable to change this. It always reverts back to “Remember History”.
I located only one Profile Manager, which I found by going through the Windows start menu with "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" –p.
I found "bookmarkbackups" under my Profile Folder. The oldest bookmark folder listed is from 10/16/2014.
Could someone please help me get all my Bookmarks and History back from before the 10/16/2014 updates? Thank you.

Hi askmozilla, yes, the Previous Versions tab in the Properties dialog for the places.sqlite files in the oldest of those folders.
I'm not sure whether Windows can match that file up with earlier restore points once the folder is moved from its original location to the desktop.
I wonder whether there is any way to access the restore point created on 10/16 just before Windows installed the updates. That really would be the best place to look if possible.

  • Windows Update in Endless Loop of 'Installing updates" and "Undoing changes" on New Windows 8.1 Pro Install

I am setting new Windows 8.1 Pro computers, and am installing Windows 8.1 Pro to bare drives.  Everything goes fine until Windows Update starts installing updates, and then the computer goes for hours installing updates, and then "We
could not complete the updates Undoing changes".   It's an endless loop. It seems to be the same 38 updates.  This is a recent phenomenon.  I have not run into this until the last week or two on several new computer installs.
Again these are brand new installs, so something is clearly wrong with the Windows updates.
If anyone can please tell me how to avoid this, it would be much appreciated.
    Michael

    Hi Michael,
"  This is a recent phenomenon"
Have you made any modifications to the machines ?
To resolve this issue ,running the built-in troubleshoot tool is a very good beginning .It will automatically diagnostic the windows update components and check the configurations for us .
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Troubleshooting\Fix problems with Windows Update
If there are antivirus software installed in these machines, please turn off them temporarily to have a check.
The command line included in the link as S.Sengupta posted is very useful and convenient to repair the windows corrupted files .We can have a try .
    "sfc /scannow" ,"DISM.EXE /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth "
We also can check the windowsupdate.log for more information to troubleshoot this issue .
     Run "windowsupdate.log"
If you have trouble in analyzing the log ,please upload them to the OneDrive and paste the link here .
    Best regards

    Hi,
Sorry to hear that in-place upgrade is still failed. It also indicates the operating system is non-recoverable.
You may have to rebuild the server.
If rebuilding is not an acceptable solution, you can open a ticket with CSS support.

Hi Daniel, the price indicated on the site. Is it the price until the incident is resolved? (no matter whether it takes days or weeks)

  • Personas has stopped working after Windows updates. Halp! How do I get personas to start working again?

Personas was working just fine. A few days ago there was a Windows update (somewhere along the lines of 20 updates). Both our Vista laptop AND our 7 Desktop were updated and now personas doesn't work on either computer . . . with the exception of one user account on the desktop. <--- which is weird, huh?
We are perplexed. When we mouse over a persona, the font color changes but the picture doesn't. When we wear a new persona again, ''only'' the font color changes but the picture doesn't. It seems to be 'stuck' on whatever our current persona is on the computer. I also tried uninstalling personas and rebooting and . . . the persona picture was still on the computer. More weirdness. I re-downloaded personas after this but the problem persists.
I've searched and searched and can't find anything on this. My best guess is that it has something to do with one of the Windows updates as several of them were security updates ... but this is only a guess on my part.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Let me know what other information I can provide to try and resolve this problem.
Oh, both machines are running the current versions of Java and Adobe flash. We are running on Firefox 3.6.17 on both laptop and desktop.

Anyone else experiencing this problem? Anyone have any ideas/suggestions on what to look for to try and resolve this? Thx.

  • Has there been updates to transcription support in a PS 4 Windows Update? Behaviour has changed...

I utilise PowerShell transcription support heavily in my PS scripts. Essentially I utilise transcription as a replacement to having a logging framework - all logging is performed via Write-Host, Write-Verbose and Write-Debug calls, and then logged to file
via a call to Start-Transcript at the start of script execution.
Transcription support in PS versions prior to 5 is limited in that it is hard coded in the Start-Transcript and Stop-Transcript commands to throw an exception if the host is not an instance of Microsoft.PowerShell.ConsoleHost. Also, to make it even more difficult,
Stop-Transcript throws an error when there is no active transcript; but there is no way to detect if there is. Therefore, I use reflection to get the ConsoleHost.IsTranscribing internal property value to determine whether to call Stop-Transcript at script
completion. This logic has worked fine for PS versions 2, 3 and 4. However, more recently I believe a Windows Update patch has changed the way the transcription works. It appears that PS 4 now supports transcription functionality that I thought was PS 5 (CTP)
specific - nested transcription sessions (i.e. you can now continually call Start-Transcript and it will create more sessions, rather than throw an error when there is an active session).  Also, the internals of how transcription is managed must have
changed because the IsTranscribing property no longer returns the correct value. I am unsure if there is now a "supported" way of checking for this rather than hacking into the internals of the host. This change results in my script creating multiple
transcription sessions as it does not know there is already transcription started.
Does anyone know if there has been any updates in PS 4 for the transcription functionality? Or any other details regarding this?
    Cheers

    Hi Anna,
Thanks for the response. Can you make sense of the info below? Transcription appears completely broken
on the build on my machine, which I have not installed any PS CTP on. I am worried a hotfix such as KB3000850 which has also caused me the grief here:
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/eaa4a532-5ff5-4a2f-89ce-7e72c71a8fb7/powershell-30-stuck-in-infinite-loop-resolving-members-internally-is-this-a-ps-bug?forum=winserverpowershell
    https://connect.microsoft.com/PowerShell/feedback/details/1045858/add-member-cmdlet-invokes-scriptproperty-members-when-adding-new-member
...has been installed via Windows Update. I am running Windows 8.1 and all latest updates applied as at 23 April.
My $PSVersionTable is the same as yours except for "BuildVersion" 6.3.9600.17400. I can also call Start-Transcript continually and it will keep creating sessions. Once I do this all sessions receive data once I
enter more commands in the console (i.e. each file is getting the same data). This is the behaviour I would have expected in PS 5 with the transcription updates, but not in a PS 4 update.
NOTE: In addition to this, the data being fed into the transcription file is NOT the same format as the standard transcription format. The transcription file contains different data and
is not a true reflection of what is on the console). The following data is being output to the transcription file after each command:
    CurrentMatchIndex              ReplacementIndex             ReplacementLength CompletionMatches
                               -1
    0                             8 {System.Management.Automat...
In addition to that (I haven't had a chance to look into this in detail), but the log files that are being generated by the PS module I have written are now containing a heap of contents that appear to be generated each time an exception
is thrown (even if it has been caught?)
    "PS>TerminatingError(Invoke-Expression): xxxxxxx" and
"PS>TerminatingError(): "The pipeline has been stopped.""
messages, but no host, verbose, or debug data (i.e. terminating error details only, which I have never seen in the transcript file before). That's correct -
the transcription file doesn't contain any of the data it used to, just error info that did not used to be in there!!
Please assist urgently, this is a critical issue for me.
