Anti-virus for the iPad

Am patiently waiting for the delivery of my iPad Wifi set to deliver Apr 16th. I am a student at Devry and college require us to have an anti-virus program to connect to their wi-fi network. Does the iPad comes with any?
Any Devry iPad owner here? Can you share your experience on campus with the iPad?

Mr.Burger. The technical concern are files that contain viruses transferring to a PC. While these files have no effect on the iPad, they may affect the pc to which they are transferred. And yes, there are NO av programs for ipads, that does not mean that iPads are incapable of being carriers. Finally, even though a device is not jailbroken, there are many legitimate ways to transfer files to computers that do not require a cable or iTunes.
I think the corporate and academic institutions have a legitimate concern that apple has failed to address.

You probably didn't even send it. Virus spreaders will often cull e-mail addressed from web sites or mailing lists. They then 'spoof' the return addresses as something other than their own, in an effort to get people to open the e-mail and attachment.
If you did send a virus, it came from a PC or even mac (yes, I know rarer  but can happen) or your address was spoofed. It's highly unlikely you actually sent it from the ipad.

  • Do I need an anti-virus for my iPad Mini?

As stupid as it sounds does it need one? It's not jailbroken and it's brand new (just got it yesterday). I'm new to apple products so, please help.

Apple programs (apps) are contained so they have only a very limited ability to interact - and this interaction is controlled by the operating system (iOS).
A virus would have no effect, because it couldn't interact with any other program or the operating system.
That has other consequences and places restrictions on what programs can do.
Some programmers found a way to 'jail break' the iPad and remove this restriction ('jailbreaking' means your iPad can 'run' non-Apple approved apps from the Cydia website, where they make such non-approved apps available).
They can now run 'unauthorised' apps on the iPad that 'take advantage' of the removal of this restriction. The downside - a 'jail broken' iPad could be vunerable to viruses.

  • Hi, I recently purchased an IPad Air.  I have a Dell PC that has the Verizon.  Security Suite.  Do I need to have virus/malware protection for the IPad Air?  Thanks.

Hi, I recently purchased an IPad air.  Do I need to place virus protection software for it?  I also have a Dell PC that has the Verizon Security Suite.  Thanks for your info.  Jim

You do not need anti virus for the iPad. The ipad only installs things from the App Store and those apps are vetted. In addition, the operating system of the ipad isn't the same as PC's or Macs so common viruses don't run on them.
The only thing you need to be aware of is protecting your info....Go to a bad site and enter your info and you're just as vulnerable as you would be on a computer. So the device isn't vulnerable to anything but user actions.

None exist... There are No Viruses for iOS devices...

  • What antivirus protection do I need for the iPad?

I am seeing some unusual activity after receiving an email.  What antivirus protection should we be considering for the ipad2?

None - there are no viruses for the iPad (or iPhone or iPod Touch), and therefore there are no antivirus apps available in the iTunes App Store

  • Are we supposed to purchase an anti-virus for iPad Air?

Are we supposed to purchase an anti-virus for iPad Air? Or is it secure without one.

Virus's - defined as a malicious program that propagates itself through the operating system - cannot run on an ipad due to its sandboxed operating system. You can still fall victim to phishing if you put your info in the wrong place or enter it in the wrong site. but, generally, any 'bad' activity on an iPad requires the user to initiate or do something first.
So while you can't get a virus you do have to be smart about how you use the internet and what you do with your device.

There are no viruses for iOS currently.
iOS employs security features built into it-mainly sand boxing.
You can not download apps from the Internet, apps cannot make changes to the core system or system wide, apps can access data inside the app itself and a very limited set outside itself.
Sand boxing also prevents AV software from working in iOS.
You can't scan the device from the AV software because it can't access the other apps or their data.

Just a +1 for Kappy's suggestions. Antivirus software simply is not necessary for OS X. If you are interested in reading more an informative article is Viruses, Trojans, Malware - and other aspects of Internet Security.

I concur with Tonefox; worthless. To preserve battery the best thing you can do is shut down apps that constantly run in the background and fetch data from servers elsewhere; the Facebook app being a prime example. Apple has more tips here:

As to clearing memory, there's almost never a need, and if there is a simple restart of the iPhone will suffice.

what is the best mac cleaner and anti virus for mac pro.

OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it updated with software updates from Apple.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources. Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Disable Java in Safari > Preferences > Security.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Block browser popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > and check "Block popup windows":
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but popups have devolved to become a common means to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever see a popup indicating it detected registry errors, that your Mac is infected with some ick, or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.
