Anti-virus problem I think

My friend downloaded Kaspersky Anti-Virus and we had no problem - today when I turned on my computer it there was a window that said to download a more current Mc Afee - so I did - now the computer doesn't work.  My laptop works so I know it isn't the modem.  What to do????

When Kaspersky was installed, did you uninstall McAfee? It's never a good idea to run two Anti-virus programs along side each other as more often than not, they tend to conflict with each other and cause some pretty interesting issues with the operating system.
When you first turn on your PC, press F8 until you get a menu asking you how you wish to boot Windows. This menu can be accessed before you get the Windows logo or the "Windows is Starting Up" screen. Boot the system into Safe Mode, choosing that option with your Arrow Keys and the Enter button and from there once the PC starts up, go to your Control Panel, and locate Add/Remove Programs (also called Remove Programs in Windows Vista and Windows 7). From this point, either uninstall Kaspersky or McAfee, whichever you do not want to use and then reboot the system. See if it will boot and log in normally.
Failing that, return to Safe Mode and try using System Restore to restore the system to a date a day or two before the problem occurred. System Restore can be reached by going to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore or if you are running Windows Vista/7, by searching System Restore in the Search Bar inside of the Start Menu.
I'd normally be a person who can fix issues such as these in person or remotely, however failing the above I would suggest taking the PC to a local computer geek or computer shop to see if they can get the machine started again. If not, at least have them back up your data so that the operating system may be reinstalled. This is of course a last ditch effort should all else fail.

Any one else having a problem with AVG anti virus or is it just me ? I’ve hear its stopped working for some people. It’s not working right for me at all, as of this morning I have been getting a lot of errors from it every time I try to open a new webpage on Firefox. I get a Connection Rest and have to refresh. Offten more then once.
It keep coming up constantly and its extremely annoying and its hard to get any work done.  It’s the only anti virus that I have so I don’t know what’s wrong with it.
I have the Firefox 3.5 and AVG antivirus 8.5, Win XP
    Error code
    szName avgnxexe

    SzModname iFW_filter.dll

I have read in several places that AVG and firefox do not play well together. I found this on AVG's website. Does any of this help?
It is not possible to access some websites when using Firefox and AVG Security Toolbar
Please let us inform you that we have recently discovered an issue in the AVG application which prevents accessing some websites (written in ASP.NET and running JavaScript). This issue occurs only in case that a combination of AVG Security Toolbar and Mozilla Firefox is used (other web browsers are not affected). In case that you are using Mozilla Firefox browser and AVG Security Toolbar, please resolve this issue this way:
Update your AVG to the latest version (8.5.374 or higher).
    Update the AVG Security Toolbar:
Open the drop-down menu by clicking on the arrow next to the AVG icon in the AVG Toolbar in your internet browser.
    Choose the Update option.
In case the AVG Toolbar is deactivated and you wish to use it again, please activate it by performing steps from FAQ 1643 and update it according to the instructions above (steps for activation are identical to steps for deactivation).
Should the issue persists, please do not hesitate to contact the AVG Technical Support team.

  • Logging on remotely to a Windows PC; anti-virus needed?

I have always been told that I don't need any anti-virus with a Mac; so I only have ClamXav (as recommended on this forum). However I am now working from home by remotely logging on to my work PC, via Java. The work PC is Windows, & I'm wondering if I do need anti-virus now... I can't quite get my head round how it works; but basically I log on via a web page, & I then get a replica of my workstation on my Mac; including my work Outlook e-mails; the company version of Word (which is different to mine); Windows IE etc. So everything I do from my work Outlook - e.g. opening Word doc's; going onto web pages etc - uses the Company applications - not the ones on my Mac. It is all accessed remotely though; so those applications are not actually installed physically on my Mac. Has anyone got any ideas / advice about anti-virus? I think - hope - my Company has a pretty good anti-virus system in place itself however, so I assume I would be protected by this?

If all you're doing is controlling another computer, no, nothing on the computer you're controlling is running on your Mac - all that's happening is that keboard and mouse commands are being sent to your Windows system and the video from your PC is being sent to your mac - so nothing will affect your Mac. Therefore no additional antivirus or other anti-malware software will be needed on the Mac.
    Regards.

  • I think I've been infected with a virus and my other anti-virus program isn't catching it; how do I turn on Firefox's virus protection?

For the past few months, I've had this very weird problem. Any time I'm online, what looks like a big cursor (as if I'm in a writing program or typing in a text field) will appear in random places on any webpage. The cursor flashes, can be different sizes, and comes and goes randomly. Sometimes it's almost three-quarters the height of the webpage; sometimes it's small. I mentioned it to a computer-savvy friend who suggested that the computer might be infected with a virus. I have Avira, but apparently it's not catching this virus, if that's what it is. How do I know whether Firefox's anti-virus program is enabled, and do you think it can solve my "cursor" issue?? Help!

  • I installed 10.6.8 from 10.6.6 on my Macbook Pro and now can't open Safari-think it's something to do with the Intego anti-virus software. Reverted Intego software back to default state and now computer just boots ups up slowly and can't access a thing.

I installed 10.6.8 from 10.6.6 OS on my MacBook Pro and have not been able to open secure sites on Safari.  Think it has something to do with the Intego Anti-virus installed.  Tried restoring Intego to default status and now my Mac barely boots up and does nothing else but spin.  Ugh.  Has anyone had similar issues and if so, were you able to resolve?  How?  Thanks,

1: Backup your user files folders of Documents, Music, Pictures etc., to a external powered drive (not TimeMachine) and disconnect.
2: Insert the 10.6 installer disk and reboot holding c
3: Simply reinstall OS X without erasing the drive, it will overwrite the installed version of OS X and the root level software, but leave your Applications folder contents (expect Apple bundled programs) and user files alone. (but backup anyway in case it fails)
4: Reboot and the Integro is gone out of your system, but there may still be something laying around in Applicaitons to delete. Use Software Update to get up to date.
5: You don't need anti-virus on a Mac, Apple provides it already for you sight unseen.
6: If you Software update, the bad certificate issues are pulled, thus are not a threat.

  • Is there an anti virus program for mac 9.1? Think I have a virus

I don't use an anti virus - using outlook express I got a strange message with no subject or sender - just a blank line. I tried deleting it but it wouldn't be deleted. Since then every time I try to delete it - it crashes the system. Same with Internet Explorer. And now my main screen icons will just 'disappear' from the screen then it crashes.
I tried looking for an antivirus but all of them seem to be for 9.2 or higher and I don't know what to do - if I upload to 9.2 will I loose any programs or files - new to this from the PC world. Thanks
    G4   Mac OS 9.1.x

    Hi, debbieM -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
It is doubtful that you have a virus - no virus which can harm OS 9 has been released in well over 10 years.
Getting a message every now and then with no subject and no body is not unusual. There are a couple of ways to get rid of a message without opening it.
Click on an adjacent message which is okay to delete, then hold down the Shift key and select the blank messages - none of them will open. Once you have selected all the ones for deletion, press the Delete key.
Or, click and hold on a message; or press the Control key and click and hold on a message. A contextual menu should appear; one of the choices in that menu shuld be to delete the messge. If you choose that, it should happen without the message ever opening.
Things you can do to make Outlook Express run smoother -
    • Increase the Preferred memory allocation for it. Adding 20 or 30 thousand to the original Preferred amount, or even more if you have sufficient RAM, is not excessive.
Article #18278 - Assigning More Memory to an Application
    • Compact the databases. To do that - with OE not running, hold down the Option key and start up OE. A splash screen will open, asking if you want to compact the database files - click okay, and follow the prompts.
For Internet Explorer, increase its Preferred memory, a lot. Adding 30 to 50 thousand is not excessive.
And now my main screen icons will just 'disappear' from the screen then it crashes.
That could indicate one or more other problems.
    • How full is your hard drive? It is good practice to not allow your hard drive to get more than 85% full. When it does get more full than that, odd behaviors including an unstable OS begin occuring.
    • Try rebuilding the desktop file (note that the desktop file has very little to do with the desktop). To rebuild the desktop safely, restart - immediately hold down the Shift key until you get the "Extensions Off" message; then release Shift and hold down the Command and Option keys until you get the splash screen asking if you want to rebuild the desktop; click yes (or okay). Once that's done, restart to turn your extensions back on.
    • Boot to your most recent OS 9 Install CD, one valid for that machine - ideally it would be OS 9.1, the same as is on the machine. Once booted to the CD, run Disk First Aid from the Utilities folder on the CD. Let DFA have a look at your hard drive, and allw it to repair what it can - it may take more than one pass to do this, especially if the drive is rather full.
If DFA finds things it just can't fix, post back with the description of the problems found.
if I upload to 9.2 will I loose any programs or files....
Updating the OS from OS 9.1 to OS 9.2.1 should not cause any loss of files.
However, in general updating an OS is not a fix for a damaged or unstable OS. It is better to get the OS now on the drive healthy before updating it.
When the machine goes unstable (icons begin disappearing, etc.) are there any error messages?

  • Time Capsule Problems - Possibly Anti Virus Related?

I have had a 500gb Time Capsule for several months and despite several calls to tech support, I have not been able to get it to properly back up.
Could it possible be related to the McAfee anti virus software that I have running?
The backup will start.. but never reach completion before locking up the system.
    Anyone have similar problems?
    Thanks!

v5.7 is the latest firmware for your AEB 802.11g.
v7.3.2 is the latest firmware for the TC.
You should probably do these simple maintenance tasks:
    Simple Maintenance Tasks:
    1. Repair Permissions - /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app. Start Disk Utility, select your HD and click on Repair Permissions. When finished, quit Disk Utility and then restart your computer.
    2. Reset PRAM - hold down Option-Command-P-R keys when starting until you hear the startup chime a 2nd time.
    3. Safe Mode Startup - hold down the Shift-key at startup until you see the login screen. When logged-in, then go to System Preferences/Network/AirPort
    - click on the 'Network Name:' roll-button, select 'Join Other Network...', enter 'Network Name and select the security type you are using, and finally, enter your Password and click 'Join'.
    - click on 'Advanced', TCP/IP and confirm that 'Configure IPv4:' is set to 'Using DHCP', click 'OK'.
    - click the 'Apply' button and exit System Preferences.
Make sure you separate the AirPort Base Station and the wireless phone by as large a distance as you can.
You could enact Interference Robustness, but it will reduce the range of your AirPort base station:
    1. Open AirPort Utility, select the AirPort Base Station (main) and click on 'Manual Setup'.
    2. Click on 'Wireless' tab and click 'Wireless Options'.
    3. Tick 'Use interference robustness, click 'Done', and click 'Update'.
    4. Wait for ABS to restart. Restart your computer and test.

  • I think I need to change to Chrome because the 5.0 Firefox is not compatible with my Kaspersky Anti-Virus which is block the 5.0 from installing. Unless you can fix this I can not update and must go with Chrome or something else. Running Windows 7.

Our Kaspersky Anti-Virus is blocking Firefox 5.0 identifying it as malicious. Firefox message stated that Kaspersky URL Advisory & Kaspersky Virtual Keyboard, 11.0.2.579. If this is not resolved we will have to change to another browser quickly. Have used Firefox for many years and hate to change but will not give up any of our Kaspersky protections. Please email with any further information or suggestions. Thanks for you assistance.

So we can continue using our current Firefox version until Kaspersky's update? Or, do we need to switch to Chrome or something else. We are senior citizens and not really up to speed on all things technical. Usually get answers from, Kim Komando's site. But wanted to try working with the Firefox community first for this problem. Thanks for your advice. Just want to be sure we can continue to use our current version of Firefox and it will keep everything up and running. Also read something about a problem with gmail and want to be sure that has been completely resolved before switching to the 5.0 Firefox.

  • Hey guys I was  wondering do I need an anti virus software on my mac? I don't think I need it but as a first time mac user I wanted your opinion.

Just wanted to get your opinion.

This comment applies to malicious software ("malware") that's installed unwittingly by the victim of a network attack. It does not apply to software, such as keystroke loggers, that may be installed deliberately by an attacker who has hands-on access to the victim's computer. That threat is in a different category, and there's no easy way to defend against it. If you have reason to suspect that you're the target of such an attack, you need expert help.
All versions of OS X since 10.6.7 have been able to detect known Mac malware in downloaded files. The recognition database is automatically updated once a day; however, you shouldn't rely on it, because the attackers are always at least a day ahead of the defenders. In most cases, there’s no benefit from any other automated protection against malware.
Starting with OS X 10.7.5, there is another layer of built-in malware protection, designated "Gatekeeper" by Apple. By default, applications that are downloaded from the network will only run if they're digitally signed by a developer with a certificate issued by Apple. Applications certified in this way haven't actually been tested by Apple (unless they come from the Mac App Store), but you can be sure that they haven't been modified by anyone other than the developer, and his identity is known, so he could be held responsible if he knowingly released malware. For most practical purposes, applications recognized by Gatekeeper as signed can be considered safe. Note, however, that there are some caveats concerning Gatekeeper:
It doesn't apply to software that comes packaged as an installer. Treat all third-party installers with caution.
It can be disabled or overridden by the user.
It can be bypassed by some third-party networking software, such as BitTorrent clients and Java applets (see below.)
It only applies to applications downloaded from the network. Software installed from a CD or other media is not checked.
For more information about Gatekeeper, see this Apple Support article.
Notwithstanding the above, the most effective defense against malware attacks is your own intelligence. All known malware on the Internet that affects a fully-updated installation of OS X 10.6 or later takes the form of so-called "trojan horses," which can only have an effect if the victim is duped into running them. If you're smarter than the malware attacker thinks you are, you won't be duped. That means, primarily, that you never install software from an untrustworthy source. How do you know a source is untrustworthy?
Any website that prompts you to install a “codec,” “plug-in,” or “certificate” that comes from that same site, or an unknown one, is untrustworthy.
A web operator who tells you that you have a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with your computer, or that you have won a prize in a contest you never entered, is trying to commit a crime with you as the victim. [Some reputable websites did legitimately warn users who were infected with the "DNSChanger" malware. That exception to this rule no longer applies.]
“Cracked” copies of commercial software downloaded from a bittorrent are likely to be infected.
Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must be downloaded directly from the developer’s website. No intermediary is acceptable.
Java on the network (not to be confused with JavaScript, to which it's not related) is always a potential weak spot in the security of any operating system. If a Java web plugin is not installed, don't install it unless you really need it. If it is installed, you should disable it (not JavaScript) in your web browsers. Few websites have Java content nowadays, so you won’t be missing much. This setting is mandatory in OS X 10.5.8 or earlier, because Java in those obsolete versions has known security flaws that make it unsafe to use on the Internet. The flaws will never be fixed. Regardless of version, experience has shown that Java can never be fully trusted, even if no vulnerabilities are publicly known at the moment.
Follow these guidelines, and you’ll be as safe from malware as you can reasonably be.
Never install any commercial "anti-virus" products for the Mac, as they all do more harm than good. If you need to be able to detect Windows malware in your files, use the free software ClamXav — nothing else.

  • Problem after anti-virus update

    Hello everybody.
One of our client uses Oracle XE on a Windows server. Two days ago after an automatic update for the installed anti-virus, Oracle stoped to work. The Listener does't come up any longer. I'm waiting for the listener.log file from the client. In the meanwhile, any idea about this issue? Thank you. Filippo

They said me that the anti-virus is Symantec and doesn't have any firewall service. Even with it down, the problem is still alive.
The part of listener.log when the problem started was:

  • I just opened an email from someone I knew via Insight Broadband. It was a link. I clicked on it and it led to a enhancement drug web site. Do you think I downloaded a virus? I didn't buy any anti-virus software. Thanks to anyone who has time to help me.

    Hello:
There are NO viruses that affect a Mac running OS X - none.  FWIW, I suggest that you NOT buy A/V software.  It is a waste of both money and computer resources.
Having said that, there are a couple of instances of malware that have popped up.  Just don't follow links from unknown sources.

  • I have a 4 GB Ipod Nano from 2006 I am trying to use again.  I leet the anti-virus on my old PC with the iTunes lapse and I think I managed to attract a virus.  If I plug my iPod Nano into this old PC, can it also become infested with a virus?

I have a 4GB iPod Nano from 2006 I am trying to use again.  I let the anti-virus softwarer lapse on my old PC, the one with my iTunes library on it.  Can my iTunes library become affected with this virus?
I have tried to fully charge the iPod but the message screen only displays ""Use iTunes to restore"
Do I need to re-download iTunes and start over?

    Hello Mike,
No, you shouldn't need to worry about your iTunes library being infected with a virus.  As to the restore message on your Nano, have you tried restoring it via iTunes yet?

  • After installing the latest version of Kaspersky Anti-virus, I can no longer receive e-mails.

I can send e-mails, but I can't receive any and they do not get copied to my Sent folder.
I have two accounts (using the same Thunderbird installation and the same IMAP server) and both have the same problem.
Thunderbird no longer asks my for my passwords and after a while I get a message that says only that the connection has timed out.
Before the connection times out, the text that appears on the bottom bar says Checking mail server capabilities.
On another thread, someone suggested logging into the account vis a Web client and deleting the oldest undownloaded message from the inbox because it could be a problem with the e-mail that blocks Thunderbird, but all my undownloaded e-mails were received after the problem started occurring.
I recently installed the latest version of Kaspersky Anti-Virus, so I'm suspecting it's blocking the incoming connection. I tried to re-install Thunderbird to see if it would work around Kasperky or tell me what I should do to get it to make an exception (or something like that). No such luck.
The Kaspersky support services don't seem to be worth anything so I don't think I'll get any help from their end.
Any help from here would be greatly appreciated,
    Simon
