Anti Virus program stopping email downloads

My wife had a problem with her email program on her mac book. She uses a program called entourage to download her emails. She was unable to download for a few days. After a while seaching on the internet she found the problem. Her anti viurus program Avast was stoping the downloads. Once she deleted the program she was able to download again.

I use Bitdefender and Thunderbird, and I din't have problems until now.

If you require anti-virus protection Thomas Reed recommends using Dr.Web Light from the App Store. It's free, and since it's from the App Store, it won't destabilize the system. If you prefer one of the better known commercial products, then Thomas recommends using Sophos.(Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.) That is a very good warning provided by the Download Statusbar extension. Something like that should been built into Firefox. I filed this Bug report a couple of years ago, about the lack of a warning like that. <br />

I have looked everywhere that I can think of to find a list of '''IOfficeAntiVirus providers''' ''(as mentioned in the Bug report)'' that will work with Firefox, so I can't answer that for you.
You might want to ask the developer of the Download Statusbar extension about it. He might know which AV programs are compatible with the Windows API that Firefox uses for the download scan. <br />

None of browser have antivrus protection..Firefox have actually phising protection.. But its not an antivirus, it didnt gives you realtime protection against Malware, adware on your pc..you need to choose free or paid antivirus program for your pc

Sophos or ClamXav either one are recommended. FYI... the Mac drive may slow down as a result of installing a/v software.

What's Best Anti-Virus Program for a Mac?

I know that most people think that Macs don't get viruses, but I'm a computer teacher in a public school and we recently got the W97M virus. It's in the Microsoft Word program, and although it may not hurt specifically our iMacs, it has caused other problems. We get frequent error messages and also the spinning ball, the latter of which could be caused by a number of reasons. Another teacher used her flash drive from school on her home computer, and the computer died. It was a PC, but she's not sure if it's from the virus or not.
Anyway, I depend on flash drives a lot to transfer documents I create at school to my home computer and vise-versa. Ever since I heard about this virus, and we've gotten other viruses too, I haven't used my flash drives on my home computer. I have a G5 with the 10.3.9 operating system that eventually I'd like to upgrade. The only two anti-virus programs I've seen the names of are iAntiVirus and ClamXAV. I thought that I had read a while ago that ClamXAV detects the virus but doesn't remove it. (or it may have been another anti-virus program) I would like one that not only detects it but also removes it, whether the program is a free one or one you have to buy. Also, I need one that is okay with my present operating system (OSX 10.3.9) and also will work with whatever the newest OSX system exists when I upgrade.

The developer of ClamXav created a front-end (the GUI interface) for an open source back-end that actually does the real work. There are apparently ClamAV applications for other platforms.
So it seems like the developer is saying that the 1.1.1 version of ClamXav for Panther is the current front-end version, but the back-end "engine" is a slightly older version. The back-end for the Tiger and later version no longer works with Panther. But that should be OK, because the program downloads updated definition files as new malware is identified. Since the developer can no longer support creating a version for Panther, this version is the last one.
Also, ClamXav is a scanning program. It does not take any action to remove malware (as far as I know). It just tells you about what if finds, and it's up to you to remove or replace the compromised file. I my case, the only things it finds are malware embedded in spam/junk emails, so I just need to find and delete those emails.
Note: I had not used ClamXav in a long time, and the 1.1.1 version does not work in Snow Leopard. But there is a beta 2.0 version that does work with Snow Leopard.

Antivirus software is not really necessary on a Mac, however if you receive many emails and forward them to PC users it may help them. I don't use any AV SW on my Macs. A lot depends on your computer habits and those who
you have contact with. Running the afore mentioned
software can provide a safety net.
These days, malware, Trojan horses, and phishing are
much greater a threat to Macs than viruses.   I'm not
saying that viruses are not possible, but they are not
as profitable.
Bottom line, use common sense. Don't install or open
anything you didn't request. Avoid torrent sites.   Never
give out personal information except when you specifically
request something that requires it.
Many large ISPs provide virus scanning of emails before
they even reach your computer.
Determining the need of an antivirus program starts
with an evaluation of yourself and your habits.
PS. I have worked with Windows computers from
        NT thru Windows7 and never had an antivirus
        program other than my own habits and have
        never been infected.

iPhone is running OSX not to say that Mac OSX can't catch a virus, but its the least out there to catch one! So for now I dont think you need to worry about that. I am sure apple will be putting software patches soon as there are some other problems with the iphone as we've all had with our brand new gadgets or computers before. So wait it out and apple most likely will do a fix to it. As to virus protection...most mac users don't have to worry about it, I'm pretty sure if the phone is running a phone version of OSX then virus protection should be one of the invisible features inside.

I had that too. On the bottom right of the AVG search page is a link which leads you to where you can switch it off. This restores normal Speed Dial operation.
This hijacking has really cheesed me off. I've just downloaded Avast and am going to put it on in place of AVG.

I have a 2009 macpro with parallels and windows 7 on it. Do I need to have an anti virus program such as "windows essential"? I don't use windows mail.
I just run windows word and my genealogy program family tree.

The recognition database is automatically updated once a day; however, you shouldn't rely on it, because the attackers are always at least a day ahead of the defenders. What is the best anti-virus program?

Corporate policy requires the installation of an anti-virus program on all our machines. I'd like to know the pros and cons on the various ones out there. Norton and Macffee I've used in the past and neither worked well. Which of the rest would you advise? Please don't waste time telling me that AV programs are not necessary on a Mac - I know that and you know that, but you know how inflexible corporate policies can be.
PS - it would need to be a universal program.

It simply seems to work. It is not a resource hog. I like that I can disable the background scan. It is integrated (unlike ClamAV) so it detected the virus test file on download. The only thing that concerns me is that currently the definitions are a month old. Kinds of odd as the definitions on my PC are a day old. So I hope that helps you. I'm not a virus scanner master but all I know is that I have seen Norton and I did not like the way it worked. Seemed to be a resource hog and came bundled with tons of other stuff I didn't need. Intego on the other hand was easy to buy, download, and install. So, I hope that helps at least a bit.
