Do not let your anti-virus s/w scan your Thunderbird profile folder. This would be asking for trouble, as you're finding out the hard way.
To locate your profile folder:<br>
AppMenu button - Help - Troubleshooting Information - Profile Directory - Open Directory
If your anti-virus s/w did already make changes to your mail file(s), it's very likely something gets corrupted resulting in lost messages. So make sure you do have a backup of your profile.

Import the music on the external HD into iTunes.  If you don't want iTunes to make a new copy of each track that is stored in your iTunes Media folder on your PC's internal HD, make sure the Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library option is NOT ticked from under the Advanced tab of iTunes Preferences.  Just remember that if you go this route, you'll always need to have your external HD plugged in before you start up iTunes.

i want to update my phone, but i purchased many apps and music on the phone. it won't let me authorize my computer so i cannot update. i don't want to deauthorize all my computers. how can i find out which 5 computers i have authorized? also how can i update the software?

This is a tedious solution, which is stupid!  And some users report an inability to reauthorize a computer after an "en masse” deauthorization.  I can’t believe Apple doesn’t provide a list or menu to find out which computers you’ve authorized! Obviously, APPLE knows (or else they couldn’t tell us how many computers we have authorized)--so why can’t they give us access to that information about our own computers??!!!
And for an already-authorized computer with a hard drive that’s since been replaced and upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite, would it be recognized as a “new computer” and require authorization? Would its previous incarnation (i.e., with the old hard drive and OS) be considered a separate computer? Some users report they can’t authorize a computer after an OS upgrade because of that. Can’t believe we have to do such a bass-ackwards kludge!

  • I want to delete all transparent pixels, how can I? CS6

I would like to delete all transparent pixels surrounding my irregularly (non-square) image.  The TRIM function only trims to a square surrounding my image and not to the edge of the image itself.  Is there a work around for this?  I have looked around and haven't found one.
    Thanks,
    JB

Image have rectangular area they have a width and height boundaries as do layer.  Not all of the rectangular area need to have content or be fully opaque,  However the image boundary is a rectangle.  Some file formats are like a Photoshop Background layer do not support empty area or even transparency so those file formats only contain image that are rectangles and have no transparency. Some file formats support transparency and empty areas so those images can be any shape and contain transparency still the image boundary is rectangular. Then there is the GIF file format an oddball format. It only supports 256 Colors. Pixels are mapped to one of the 256 colors selected for the image.  If you want Transparency in a gif  the number of colors is reduced by 1 to 255  the 256 color now indicate no content its not real transparency it just a no color pixel in other words off or no content.
So if you have areas that are 100% transparent there is nothing to delete the area is empty.  If you have pixels that contain some transparency and you delete those pixels you delete details are you sure you want to delete all pixels that contain transparency? You will loose things like drop shadows

I will dissent. For a one time scan you could run Sophos. It will probably only pick up something meant for Windows, if at all, and it may throw a false positive at you, so don't be in a hurry to delete anything. I see you're running 10.8, which has some built in protection, but since it's an '09, you probably migrated stuff over from an earlier OS or Mac and it's also possible you weren't (or haven't been) observing safe browsing techniques, so it may find something genuine.

For the Sophos forum in order to get more help, if needed.

When done, you can leave it if it's not causing any problems (but not set to auto scan) or uninstall it.

And don't let any A-V allow you to become complacent. It's only going to find something already catalogued, but it won't find any brand new threats.
Also, make sure you do not run Java (not JavaScript) in the browser. (Or just don't install the plugin, to begin with.) That would be asking for big trouble. Java is buggy and relentlessly exploited by malware.
Also, pay attention to updates in all your most used applications, Flash included.

  • HT4623 Trying to update my iphone to the newest version and need more space, want to delete the other space and can't find where to do that or what is even in it? please let m eknow so i can install the new software. Thank you

Want to empty the "other space on my I-Phone any new ideas?

Is there a "New" button at the top right of the Playlists section of Music?
There is no Edit button to delete music, swipe sideways on the song to reveal the delete button. Tap and hold on the artwork in Artists and albums to reveal the (X) button to delete. Or connect the iPad back up to iTunes on the computer and check your sync settings for music to ensure you are syncing the right content.

  • I no longer have an "organize bookmarks" option. I want to arrange them my way, but can't find the file to edit to make it look like I want it to look.

I used to be able to edit a bookmark.html file and the bookmarks would stay where I put them. Now they seem to have a life of their own and move in places I don't want them.

"Organize Bookmarks" has been renamed to "Show All Bookmarks" in the bookmarks menu.
For info Firefox has not stored bookmarks in bookmarks.html since Firefox 2, it now stores them in places.sqlite

  • Itunes all of a sudden can't find original file

A few months ago, I moved my itunes library to an external hard drive. It has all been working fine for the most part.  Every once in a while, it will say that an original file could not be found, but then it works later.
Today, my husband was trying to put songs on his new ipod, and over half the songs he tried to listen to wouldn't play.  It kept saying the original file could not be located.
Can someone help me understand why all of a sudden all these songs would just quit working?

I have beem having the same problem. I even created another user on my PC but developed the same situation! ARGH!

  • I think I've been infected with a virus and my other anti-virus program isn't catching it; how do I turn on Firefox's virus protection?

For the past few months, I've had this very weird problem. Any time I'm online, what looks like a big cursor (as if I'm in a writing program or typing in a text field) will appear in random places on any webpage. The cursor flashes, can be different sizes, and comes and goes randomly. Sometimes it's almost three-quarters the height of the webpage; sometimes it's small. I mentioned it to a computer-savvy friend who suggested that the computer might be infected with a virus. I have Avira, but apparently it's not catching this virus, if that's what it is. How do I know whether Firefox's anti-virus program is enabled, and do you think it can solve my "cursor" issue?? Help!

I do not recommend reformatting your harddrive and reloading your software.  This is a Windows thing. On an older mac it may be difficult to find all your software again.
Best to have greater than 2gig of free space.  Many posters to these forums state that you need much more free space: 5 gig to 10 gig or 10 percent of you hd size.

Be careful when deleting files. A lot of people have trashed their system when deleting things. Place things in trash. Reboot & run your applications. Empty trash.
Go after large files that you have created & know what they are.  Do not delete small files that are in a folder you do not know what the folder is for. Anything that is less than a megabyte is a small file these days.

"Viruses" have not been the real issue on Macs.  The real issues
have been malware and trojans.  In these cases, the user is most
likely lured into believing that they must download certain software
and the user actively accepts it.  The other case is users that try to
beat the system by downloading software from "warez" sites trying
to get out of paying for software.  Torrent sites are also a favorite target
for trojans and malware as well.
The best defense against these sort of attacks is:
-If you didn't request it, don't accept it.
-If a site claims that you must download an upgrade
for a polpular plugin, Adobe Flash for example, go to
the plugin/software vendors site and verify that you
are not up to date and get it there.
-Only download and install software directly from vendor
sites and only from reputable vendors.
The one reason for AV software would be to check mail
that you may forward to Windows machines so as not
to affect them.  And again, as far as mail, if it is unsolicited,
trash and delete and don't open any attachments or links.

  • Do I need an anti-virus program on a MacBook?

I'm a brand new MacBook user. Just bought the 13-inch aluminum body version from Club Mac and it was delivered yesterday. The notebook is actually for my wife to be able to use while she's recovering from knee surgery in a couple of weeks and I thought it was time to branch our family out from PC's and Windows. So I'm setting up the MacBook for her to be able to use it...and for our family to get more literate on a Mac and it looks great! My question is do I need an anti-virus program and if so, which is a good one recommended by Mac users? NOTE: because my wife is familiar with Windows, I had XP service pack 3 installed and have VM Ware Fusion onboard to be able to run both Windows and Leopard for her convenience and to assist us. So there MAY be some Windows use on this MacBook, at least at first. All responses, replies, suggestions, welcome. THANK YOU.

Do You Need Anti-Virus Protection for Your Mac?
According to Rich Mogull's article, Should Mac Users Run Antivirus Software?,
"The reality is that today the Mac platform is relatively safe. There are hundreds of thousands of viruses and other malicious software programs floating around for Windows, but less than 200 are known to target the Mac, and many of those are aimed at versions of the Mac OS prior to Mac OS X (and thus have no effect on a modern Mac).
It's not that Mac OS X is inherently more secure against viruses than current versions of Windows (although it was clearly more secure than Windows prior to XP SP2); the numerous vulnerabilities reported and patched in recent years are just as exploitable as their Windows equivalents. But most security experts agree that malicious software these days is driven by financial incentives, and it's far more profitable to target the most dominant platform."
Mr. Mogull is a computer security expert. I recommend reading the entire article as it is quite informative.

  • What's Best Anti-Virus Program for a Mac?

I know that most people think that Macs don't get viruses, but I'm a computer teacher in a public school and we recently got the W97M virus. It's in the Microsoft Word program, and although it may not hurt specifically our iMacs, it has caused other problems. We get frequent error messages and also the spinning ball, the latter of which could be caused by a number of reasons. Another teacher used her flash drive from school on her home computer, and the computer died. It was a PC, but she's not sure if it's from the virus or not.
Anyway, I depend on flash drives a lot to transfer documents I create at school to my home computer and vise-versa. Ever since I heard about this virus, and we've gotten other viruses too, I haven't used my flash drives on my home computer. I have a G5 with the 10.3.9 operating system that eventually I'd like to upgrade. The only two anti-virus programs I've seen the names of are iAntiVirus and ClamXAV. I thought that I had read a while ago that ClamXAV detects the virus but doesn't remove it. (or it may have been another anti-virus program) I would like one that not only detects it but also removes it, whether the program is a free one or one you have to buy. Also, I need one that is okay with my present operating system (OSX 10.3.9) and also will work with whatever the newest OSX system exists when I upgrade.
    Thank you for your help.

The developer of ClamXav created a front-end (the GUI interface) for an open source back-end that actually does the real work. There are apparently ClamAV applications for other platforms.
So it seems like the developer is saying that the 1.1.1 version of ClamXav for Panther is the current front-end version, but the back-end "engine" is a slightly older version. The back-end for the Tiger and later version no longer works with Panther. But that should be OK, because the program downloads updated definition files as new malware is identified. Since the developer can no longer support creating a version for Panther, this version is the last one.
Also, ClamXav is a scanning program. It does not take any action to remove malware (as far as I know). It just tells you about what if finds, and it's up to you to remove or replace the compromised file. I my case, the only things it finds are malware embedded in spam/junk emails, so I just need to find and delete those emails.
Note: I had not used ClamXav in a long time, and the 1.1.1 version does not work in Snow Leopard. But there is a beta 2.0 version that does work with Snow Leopard.

Antivirus software is not really necessary on a Mac, however if you receive many emails and forward them to PC users it may help them. I don't use any AV SW on my Macs. If you want to use one to detect a virus on emails, get the freeware antivirus application for Macs - ClamXav @ http://www.clamxav.com/ .
