Anti-Virus Utlity

Does anyone have experience with this utility? Is it any good or even necessary?
http://www.sophos.com/products/free-tools/free-mac-anti-virus/

malware for Macs is something to worry about:
As already mentioned, it's something to think about, but worry is probably too strong a word.
McAfee says: "Mac-targeted malware will continue to increase in sophistication' in 2011
Wow, I wish I could predict the future! Hey, I think I'll predict that I'm going to win the lottery... like that statement from McAfee, my prediction is entirely self-serving.
It's entirely possible that Mac malware could increase in sophistication in 2011. However, there hasn't been a whole lot of increase in sophistication in Mac malware in the past decade, so this is unlikely. It's pretty certain that some new Mac malware is likely to be discovered in 2011, but that is a different story altogether.
Even Apple says, "It is also advisable to use antivirus software to scan any files before installation." at https://support.apple.com/kb/HT2128.
Times have changed.
Not recently. First, note that that document is more than two years old. Further, Mac malware has always been around, in very small quantities. Most of it is completely incapable of infecting a modern Mac with an up-to-date system. The rest, you do have to think about, but you should educate yourself about the threats and act accordingly rather than issuing blanket statements. It may make sense to get a copy of a tool like [ClamXav|http://www.clamxav.com> to scan any downloads before installing them, but that depends on your knowledge level and downloading habits.

Obs.: meu sistema e windows 7 home premium 64bits

  • Cisco Jabber for Windows - Anti-Virus Software

    Hello,
Cisco Jabber for Windows could not resolve outlook contacts, when a client has installed McAffee Anti-Virus Software.
Is there any documentation available, how to setup a Anti-Virus Software, to get Cisco Jabber for Windows running?
Cisco Jabber for Windows Version 9.2.4 Build 4528
    Outlook 2013
    Thanks
    Alex

this is all what we mention about antivirus;  http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/voice_ip_comm/jabber/Windows/9_2/JABW_BK_J6915A59_00_jabber-windows-server-setup/JABW_BK_J6915A59_00_jabber-windows-server-setup_chapter_00.html
Some antivirus or firewall applications, such as Symantec EndPoint Protection, block inbound CDP packets, which disables desk phone video capabilities. You should configure your antivirus or firewall application to allow inbound CDP packets. See the following Symantec technical document for additional details about this issue: Cisco IP Phone version 7970 and Cisco Unified Video Advantage is Blocked by Network Threat Protection.
with that being said; we probably would like to get the jabber process excluded from the antivirus list so that it allows for inbound MAPI communication as that is what is used for quering for the outlook contact.
The only process that ever runs from Jabber for windows is "CiscoJabber.exe" which is located in the following path:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Cisco Systems\Cisco Jabber
    i hope this helps.

I want to go back to the previous version of Firefox, because the new version (4.0.1 I think) that I downloaded disabled several of my programs, including my anti-virus program, because they were incompatible with the new version of Firefox. How do I get back to the previous version of Firefox and re-enable the disabled programs?

Some gestures have been removed in Firefox 4.
You can restore the zoom feature by changing the values of the related prefs on the <b>about:config</b> page.
    browser.gesture.pinch.in -> <b>cmd_fullZoomReduce</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.in.shift -> <b>cmd_fullZoomReset</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.out -> <b>cmd_fullZoomEnlarge</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.out.shift -> <b>cmd_fullZoomReset</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.latched -> <b>false</b>
To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.<br />
You can use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a pref more easily.

Thanks for trying to help. Sadly, I followed the instructions and it rebooted to the blue screen again.
It's going to have to go to Apple for repairs now. I'm out of options.
I am wondering how much easier it would have been if I'd created a time machine restore point. I got what I deserved for failing to do that, but I'm doubtful even that would have worked in this case. It does seem to be because of that piece of widely reported malware that didn't want to leave without causing damage.
The most frustrating aspect is the safe boot. I get to the desktop but without any menu, finder or dock. It seems to be similar to the problem below...
    http://www.macsmarts.com/?p=109
But that's for Tiger. I tried that to no effect.
Like I said, it's going to have to go to Apple now because I've done so many things I don't know if I'm just digging myself a deeper hole.
    Thanks again for offering help.

An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
    See these Apple articles:

OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
About file quarantine in OS X
If you require anti-virus protection Thomas Reed recommends using Dr.Web Light from the App Store. It's free, and since it's from the App Store, it won't destabilize the system. If you prefer one of the better known commercial products, then Thomas recommends using Sophos.(Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.) If you already use Sophos, then be aware of this if you are using Mavericks: OS X Mavericks- Sophos Anti-Virus on-access scanner versions 8.0 - 9.1 may cause unexpected restarts
From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:
    The facts are:
    1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
    2. There is no anti-malware that can detect anything targeting the Mac because there
is no Mac malware in the wild, and therefore, no "signatures" to detect.
    3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that
the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering
techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.
    4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
        protection against malware.
    5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
from which they purport to protect you.
    6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.
    7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.
    8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something
you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.
    9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware.

I have what appears to be a virus on my mac namely MAL/FAK AV-OQ I only discovered it after installing SOPHOS anti virus software.
I cannot remove it automatically with this software it says it has to be done manually.
    Where do I start???

That is Windows malware, and cannot affect your Mac. See:
    http://www.sophos.com/en-us/threat-center/threat-analyses/viruses-and-spyware/Ma l~FakeAV-OQ.aspx
It may be attached to an e-mail message or could be something that was copied over from a Windows machine via flash drive or something similar. If it is attached to an e-mail message, simply delete the e-mail. (Do not let Sophos, or any other anti-virus software, quarantine the message or attachment! That can corrupt the mailbox that the message resides in.) If it isn't an e-mail message, you can let Sophos quarantine and delete the file or you can delete it yourself.

  • My iPhone 4 has crashed.  i tunes will not recognize it and I can't restore it.  I sync with macbook pro and all software is up to date.  no anti-virus applications/software are on my macbook.  any ideas?

my iphone 4g has crashed.  itunes doesn't seem to recognize it and wil not let me restore it.  i have updated all software and there are no anti-virus apps/software on the macbook that this phone syncs with.  i do get an error message on the phone that says something like the accessory is not compatible but I have no accessory for the phone other than the apple chargers and ear buds.  any thoughts?

The possible fix for the "this accessory is not compatible" is to carefully clean the dock port with isopropyll alcohol especially the pins which are on top of the mid rib. Be firm but do not break anything. Let it dry for a minute. See if that helps, if not try to clean one more time. If problems persist might need to Visit Apple.

  • I installed 10.6.8 from 10.6.6 on my Macbook Pro and now can't open Safari-think it's something to do with the Intego anti-virus software. Reverted Intego software back to default state and now computer just boots ups up slowly and can't access a thing.

I installed 10.6.8 from 10.6.6 OS on my MacBook Pro and have not been able to open secure sites on Safari.  Think it has something to do with the Intego Anti-virus installed.  Tried restoring Intego to default status and now my Mac barely boots up and does nothing else but spin.  Ugh.  Has anyone had similar issues and if so, were you able to resolve?  How?  Thanks,

1: Backup your user files folders of Documents, Music, Pictures etc., to a external powered drive (not TimeMachine) and disconnect.
2: Insert the 10.6 installer disk and reboot holding c
3: Simply reinstall OS X without erasing the drive, it will overwrite the installed version of OS X and the root level software, but leave your Applications folder contents (expect Apple bundled programs) and user files alone. (but backup anyway in case it fails)
4: Reboot and the Integro is gone out of your system, but there may still be something laying around in Applicaitons to delete. Use Software Update to get up to date.
5: You don't need anti-virus on a Mac, Apple provides it already for you sight unseen.
6: If you Software update, the bad certificate issues are pulled, thus are not a threat.

  • How can I remove an app claiming to be anti virus, that downloaded itself from e-mail?

    O
On Friday, May 21; I was reading my e-mail. I opened a message from a regular contact and immediately an application opened claiming to be "the latest Anti Virus program for Mac". It will not operate until you register, and it is $59.95 to register. As I was told by Apple people that I didn't need an anti virus program for my Mac., I figured it's a scam. Problem: How do I get it out of my system? (It created an icon on the Task bar that appears as a red shield). It also downloaded a page of ****.  I would like to get it out of the system without deleting and reinstalling the OS.

This question has been answered before, see the page linked below:

  • I just downloaded an update and my sophos anti-virus is going beserk.  It will not allow me to remove the threat when I unlock the quarantine manager and I have no idea of what to do

I just downloaded an update and my sophos anti-virus is going beserk.  It will not allow me to remove the threat manually when I unlock the quarantine manager and I have no idea of what to do.

The malware it's finding is probably Windows malware attached to e-mail messages. What are the names of some of those things? Assuming they're not Mac malware, allowing Sophos (or any other anti-virus software) to remove them could cause problems. For example, if they're attached to e-mail, removing them improperly by simply deleting the message file will leave the malware on the e-mail server, and it may very well end up getting re-downloaded when your mail client syncs with the server. It may also corrupt the mailbox.
If you actually ever see a malware name starting with MacOS or OSX (I forget which one Sophos uses), then you will need to worry, and should not assume that the malware can be completely removed by anti-virus software of any kind.

  • Do I need an anti-virus program on a MacBook?

I'm a brand new MacBook user. Just bought the 13-inch aluminum body version from Club Mac and it was delivered yesterday. The notebook is actually for my wife to be able to use while she's recovering from knee surgery in a couple of weeks and I thought it was time to branch our family out from PC's and Windows. So I'm setting up the MacBook for her to be able to use it...and for our family to get more literate on a Mac and it looks great! My question is do I need an anti-virus program and if so, which is a good one recommended by Mac users? NOTE: because my wife is familiar with Windows, I had XP service pack 3 installed and have VM Ware Fusion onboard to be able to run both Windows and Leopard for her convenience and to assist us. So there MAY be some Windows use on this MacBook, at least at first. All responses, replies, suggestions, welcome. THANK YOU.

Do You Need Anti-Virus Protection for Your Mac?
According to Rich Mogull's article, Should Mac Users Run Antivirus Software?,
"The reality is that today the Mac platform is relatively safe. There are hundreds of thousands of viruses and other malicious software programs floating around for Windows, but less than 200 are known to target the Mac, and many of those are aimed at versions of the Mac OS prior to Mac OS X (and thus have no effect on a modern Mac).
It's not that Mac OS X is inherently more secure against viruses than current versions of Windows (although it was clearly more secure than Windows prior to XP SP2); the numerous vulnerabilities reported and patched in recent years are just as exploitable as their Windows equivalents. But most security experts agree that malicious software these days is driven by financial incentives, and it's far more profitable to target the most dominant platform."
Mr. Mogull is a computer security expert. I recommend reading the entire article as it is quite informative.

  • Is there an anti virus program for mac 9.1? Think I have a virus

I don't use an anti virus - using outlook express I got a strange message with no subject or sender - just a blank line. I tried deleting it but it wouldn't be deleted. Since then every time I try to delete it - it crashes the system. Same with Internet Explorer. And now my main screen icons will just 'disappear' from the screen then it crashes.
I tried looking for an antivirus but all of them seem to be for 9.2 or higher and I don't know what to do - if I upload to 9.2 will I loose any programs or files - new to this from the PC world. Thanks
    G4   Mac OS 9.1.x

    Hi, debbieM -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
It is doubtful that you have a virus - no virus which can harm OS 9 has been released in well over 10 years.
Getting a message every now and then with no subject and no body is not unusual. There are a couple of ways to get rid of a message without opening it.
Click on an adjacent message which is okay to delete, then hold down the Shift key and select the blank messages - none of them will open. Once you have selected all the ones for deletion, press the Delete key.
Or, click and hold on a message; or press the Control key and click and hold on a message. A contextual menu should appear; one of the choices in that menu shuld be to delete the messge. If you choose that, it should happen without the message ever opening.
Things you can do to make Outlook Express run smoother -
    • Increase the Preferred memory allocation for it. Adding 20 or 30 thousand to the original Preferred amount, or even more if you have sufficient RAM, is not excessive.
Article #18278 - Assigning More Memory to an Application
    • Compact the databases. To do that - with OE not running, hold down the Option key and start up OE. A splash screen will open, asking if you want to compact the database files - click okay, and follow the prompts.
For Internet Explorer, increase its Preferred memory, a lot. Adding 30 to 50 thousand is not excessive.
And now my main screen icons will just 'disappear' from the screen then it crashes.
That could indicate one or more other problems.
    • How full is your hard drive? It is good practice to not allow your hard drive to get more than 85% full. When it does get more full than that, odd behaviors including an unstable OS begin occuring.
    • Try rebuilding the desktop file (note that the desktop file has very little to do with the desktop). To rebuild the desktop safely, restart - immediately hold down the Shift key until you get the "Extensions Off" message; then release Shift and hold down the Command and Option keys until you get the splash screen asking if you want to rebuild the desktop; click yes (or okay). Once that's done, restart to turn your extensions back on.
    • Boot to your most recent OS 9 Install CD, one valid for that machine - ideally it would be OS 9.1, the same as is on the machine. Once booted to the CD, run Disk First Aid from the Utilities folder on the CD. Let DFA have a look at your hard drive, and allw it to repair what it can - it may take more than one pass to do this, especially if the drive is rather full.
If DFA finds things it just can't fix, post back with the description of the problems found.
if I upload to 9.2 will I loose any programs or files....
Updating the OS from OS 9.1 to OS 9.2.1 should not cause any loss of files.
However, in general updating an OS is not a fix for a damaged or unstable OS. It is better to get the OS now on the drive healthy before updating it.
When the machine goes unstable (icons begin disappearing, etc.) are there any error messages?

  • Anti-Virus Software for Windows Vista Beta 2 Preview-

As many of you with MacBooks and MacBook Pros are already installing Windows Vista Beta 2, you may have forgotten about Anti-Virus/Internet Security software. Microsoft is offering Free Anti-Virus and Internet Security software from it's partners that work with Windows Vista. Here is the link: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/viruses/wsc/en-us/windowsvistabeta2.msp x
The Trend Micro looks a bit more promising, as it is their Internet Security Suite, and not just the Ant-Virus, as is from eTrust.
I will be installing this onto one of my Windows Machines soon, and will post back on how they work. Hope this helps anyone installing the Windows Vista Beta Preview 2.

    Hi SkipHaughay,
As far as I know Parallels does not support Windows Vista at this time. Vista must be installed over Windows XP on Boot Camp. IF you do install through Boot Camp, I hear that everything works except for sound and wireless I believe. Hope this helps.
