Antivirus anda Firewall

Is it necessary to have some antivirus and firewall software using MAC OS with Mail and Safari?

That article is nothing to do with an actual piece of malware - its about an exploit found by a researcher (and all credit to him). Dozens of these are found a every month and patched before a piece of malware is created to exploit it. The presence of a hole does not mean there is automatically a piece of malware exploiting it.
Nowhere does it say an actual trojan/virus/malware was found anywhere outside a lab and in a competition.
No idea what you thought you had but you clearly do not know that about which you speak

Hi, im running a windows computer xp home service pack3,
I was having problems downloading films from itunes, and i suspected either a bug/virus in my computer
or conflict with security software in my computer was causing problems, So i wiped my computer and installed new version
of xp,Went onto itunes and downloaded film which seems to have downloaded okay,
I dont want the same problem so can anyone suggest please an antivirus and firewall for my computer [had pandacloud antivirus before] which shouldnt cause conflict problems with itunes?, Many thanks for any help given.

WIndows XP has a fairly serviceable firewall built into it already. As long as you are connecting to the internet via a router there really shouldn't be too much to worry about. Back in the day of directly connected modems people were inadverntly exposing their file systems to anyone who chose to look. A quick visit to Sheilds Up! should let you know if there are any significant issues.
I tend to recommend AVG-Free as an AV solution for personal use. Don't install its toolbar or search redirector. Whatever AV package you use you may want to go into its advanced settings and exclude it from monitoring your iTunes folder. This should prevent any conflict between the AV and iTunes.

  • Do I need antivirus and firewall software for my MacBook Pro?

New to the world of Mac. Just purchased MacBook Pro notebook. Will be using for basic personal use (internet browsing, sending and receiving e-mails, MySpace activity, and using Final Cut Express for creating videos). Do I need to purchase and install third party antivirus and firewall software? I see some information in the discussion forum that this is not really necessary with Mac/Leopard OS X.
Also tried to search Apple site to see if Apple "recommended" certain antivirus software, but could not find anything specific in that regard.
If antivirus software is recommended for use, would like to hear what other users recommend for purchase. Thanks

Welcome to the world of Mac - I hope you will like it here
I came from the Windows world some years ago and have never regretted the switch - on the contrary. I love the ease of use, stability and security of OS X.
There are a lot of opinions regarding whether you should use antivirus and/or third party firewall on a Mac.
I was used to having all the security I could, so to speak, on my Windows machines, and with good reason - my antivirus program stopped "nasties" on more than one occasion.
With OS X I have never quite felt the need to install antivirus. One reason for this is that there are very few, if any, viruses or other "nasties" in the wild for OS X. Another is that OS X works differently from Windows and is less vulnerable (but not invulnerable!).
Regarding firewall, I have found OS X own firewall to be sufficient since I also have a router with built in firewall on my network.
That said, there are those who suggest that we should install an antivirus program if most of those we communicate with run Windows. This is in order to avoid unintentionally spreading viruses to them, viruses that may not affect us but might affect a Windows machine.
In addition, OS X in not invulnerable, and there are those who think Apple might be more open to peoples interest in writing "nasties" for OS X if the market shares increase enough. Then again - it is all speculation and no one knows what the future brings.
I am very security conscious, but would tend to agree with those who suggest that a third party firewall and an antivirus program is not strictly necessary.
Should you still want to have added security, I would suggest antivirus and stick to OS X own firewall.
Two excellent antivirus programs for OS X are ClamAVX (free) and Intego VirusBarrier X5 (pay) (Intego also has firewall and anti-spam solutions). They put little strain on the computer and are considered among the best.

  • Do you need to buy antivirus and firewall software for a new mac book pro?

If you purchase a new Mac book pro retina does it need antivirus and firewall products?

No. Although disabled when you buy it, OS X has a built-in firewall that you can easily turn on should you need to. You would only need to if you were connecting to public Wi-Fi networks like at Starbucks. AV protection is also built-in to OS X.

Leap-A is not a true virus, in that it cannot spread from machine to machine without human intervention.
What does Apple have to say about all this?
Here’s what the company told my colleague Peter Cohen:
Leap-A is not a virus, it is malicious software that requires a user to download the application and execute the resulting file. Apple always advises Macintosh users to only accept files from vendors and Web sites that they know and trust. We have a guide to safely handling files received from the Internet.

  • Printer suddenly not communicating with laptop and can't print, possibly due to antivirus software?

All of a sudden I can't print from my laptop, neither wireless or via USB.  I keep getting an error message "printer not responding."  I did the dx/repair and was able to print a test page, but that's it.  Would like to know if it might be due to my antivirus software/firewall?
I use Windows 8 on an HP laptop.  Security software is Norton.  This has never happened before and I"ve been using this Norton subscription for at least 8 months, maybe longer.
Is there something I can do in the Norton settings to fix this?
    Thanks.

    2.  I am installing latest version, and have followed all steps meticulously but in order to install it says I have to have windows firewall on. (HP Software will not fix problem nor will windows software, and I can not tun on manually. )
HP installation exits uninstalling as it goes.

    Any ideas?

Hello Tango2014, and welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience!
I see you are experiencing installation issues. I would like to help.
I would suggest Uninstalling the Printer Software.
Once it is uninstalled, I would suggest putting your system into clean boot mode within the Microsoft configuration.  You can do so by following this document: How to perform a clean boot in Windows.
Once the computer is in clean boot mode, I would suggest reinstalling the HP Printer Install Wizard for Windows.
Good luck and please let me know the results of your troubleshooting steps. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums!

  • I cannot validate the serial number and I tried several things like shut down firewall, change hosts (cannot change it by the way the computer won't let me), etc.

I cannot validate the serial number on premiere elements and photoshop elements. Stil saying that i do not have any connection with the internet. I already tried to contact the adobe chat. They did help me, but what they say did not work.
They said that I had to contact helpdeks, but they would not help me. I had to go to the chat again. The chat does not work.
I also tried al of the things that is mentioned on this site https://helpx.adobe.com/nl/x-productkb/policy-pricing/activation-deactivation-products.htm l.
Can someone help me, because I don't know what to do know.

    Celina
Did you purchase Premiere Elements 13 from Adobe direct? If so, you can get your money back within 30 days of purchase.
I can post an Adobe Chat Orders link for that if necessary.
Did Adobe Chat or any of its representatives offer to do a remote control of computer troubleshooting to get to the core of your
problem? We in this user to user forum cannot do that, Adobe Chat might. But, again, we are not Adobe.
Do you have a computer shop or an associate with computer software knowledge who can assist you on this matter?
Excuse the question, but I do not want to take anything for granted. Are you sure that you have the right serial number and are
    entering it correctly
    xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxx
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/find-serial-number.html
    Just to summarize...
    a. In the hosts file....you saw nothing but the default entries
    b. You download and installed the Adobe Application Manager and that did not solve the problem
    c. You renamed the SLCache and SLStore Folders and that did not help
But, can you disable the antivirus and firewall(s) to see if resolves the issue in anyway?
What antivirus program does your computer use?

  • Airport Utility and Firewall Difficulties

I am running Windows 7 with a Time Capsule and Airport Express for NAS, wireless routing, and Airplay.  The TC is connected to the Win 7 desktop via ethernet and we have a Vista laptop and iPhones which connect wirelessly to the network.
I also have a Webroot internet security program for antivirus and firewall which seems to be interfering with Airport Utility finding the TC and AE.  If I disable the firewall and reboot, the devices appear in APutil.  Windows Firewall is disabled and not used.
I have included the APutil.exe, APagent.exe, iTunes.exe, and a few other Apple executables in the security exceptions to allow their traffic but APutil still can't see the devices.  The wireless internet connection still works but Airplay will not.  Is there another Webroot setting I need to change?
Alternatively, would I still be protected if I shut off the Webroot firewall function and allowed the NAT Firewall in the Apple hardware to operate?  Is there anything I need to do in the Airport Utility to make this happen?
Many thanks in advance from a wireless newbie.

iTunes uses UDP port 5353 to locate AirPort Express base stations that can be destinations for your AirTunes music stream. Make sure this port is allowed through your firewall.

  • Why does my Windows Firewall keep turning off briefly?

I have just run a recovery on my dad's Pavilion Media Center TV m7470n Desktop, which restored XP Media Edition 2005 SP2. I then installed SP3 and used Windows Update to get more recent updates. The system is now working fine, but every so often I get a popup notification that says the Windows Firewall is off. The popup balloon quickly, and when I go into the Security Center the Windows Firewall shows up as on. I ran a full scan with Microsoft Security Essentials and I also tried Trend Micro's HouseCall and RootkitBuster. None of the scans showed any threats, but I'm still uncomfortable with the myesterious balloon popping up several times a day. Does anyone have any insight?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hello,
Thank you for posting in the HP Support forum!
    1. When you go to Control Panel -> Windows Firewall
do you see the firewall in ON condition (despite the security center warnings) ?
    2. Click on Start -> Run -> type services.msc and hit OK. In the list that will open, navigate to Windows Firewall and see if the service is set to Automatic and if it is started
    3. Let's flush the Security Center's memory :-)
Click on Start -> Run -> type services.msc and hit OK.
In the list that will open, navigate to Windows Management Instrumentation, right-click on it, and choose Stop.
Open My Computer/Windows Explorer and goto c:\Windows\system32\WBEM
There you will see a folder called Repository.
Right click it and rename it to rep_old
Again, go to services.msc and now start the Windows Management Instrument service.
After that, please, restart your computer.
Note, that after the restart the computer will rebuild the Repository folder and the first start after that might be slower than usual. Additionally, some services might be delayed.
    Additional precautions I would take:
    - Please, scan your computer for the presence of malware using HitmanPro (free):
    Information -> http://www.surfright.nl/en/hitmanpro/
    Download -> http://www.surfright.nl/en/downloads/  (32-bit version is yours)
Windows XP is getting out of support very soon - in less than 3 months Microsoft will stop supporting it anymore. It goes into history. It is highly recommended that you upgrade to newer operating system in order to use the latest technology, enjoy better security, faster and better programs, support, etc.
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/end-support-help
If you plan on continue using Windows XP for longer (after Microsoft stops supporting it), I would choose another antivirus and firewall solution for the computer such as third party firewall like ZoneAlarm , and/or third party antivirus software like Norton Antivirus, McAfee Internet security, Kaspersky, ESET, etc. or all-in-one suit.
    Best wishes,
