Antivirus on windows (installed via VMWare Fusion)

if i will install windows xp home on my macbook (using VMWare Fusion), should i need to install an antivirus software on my macbook for the windows? or should i install the antivirus straight on the windows OS?
will my macbook be placed at risk for viruses, trojans and spywares if i install windows XP (via Fusion)?
thanks a lot,

The short answer is that Windows is the OS at risk from the trojans, worms, malware and spyware - and that's where you should install the anti-viral software. Your Mac OS will not be at risk from those unwanted pests.

  • Boot Camp control panel does not load: Windows XP via VMWare Fusion

whenever i try to access the boot camp control panel--either via the diamond-shaped boot camp icon running in the task bar, or through the windows control panel itself--i get the following error message related to administrative privileges:
"An error occurred while trying to access the startup disk settings. You may not have privileges to change the startup disk. Make sure you have administrator privileges and try again."
is this because i am running windows as a virtual machine within fusion? obviously i'm not interested in the control panel for its startup options, but rather for its other adjustments such as brightness, trackpad, etc.
i am logged in as administrator--that is the only account i have--and i am running boot camp 2.1 on windows xp sp3.
    boring possibly-related background info:
    - i installed sp3 before ever putting boot camp on my windows virtual machine. i started, of course, with boot camp 2.0 via the OEM leopard install disk, but even after that installed successfully, i could not access the boot camp control panel. so i plowed forward and installed the 2.1 update, but to no avail.
    - i even un-installed sp3 and rolled back to sp2, then removed all traces of boot camp, then re-installed starting from 2.0, but to no avail.
google reveals that a few others have gotten this error message, but i've seen no definitive answer for any of them.

Check your XP Task Manager to see if the processes are running or not. I found that I had issues with my Boot Camp Control Panel if I let it auto-launch. It would hang and not start properly most of the time (but it would sometimes). I removed the process from the auto-start list and put an icon on my desktop to manually start it, and it works right every time now. As for the special keys, etc many of those only work right once the control panel app running.

  • Run Windows 8.1 Pro on a SDXC card via VMware Fusion

    Hi everyone,
I'm kinda new to the whole Mac story.
Have been using iPhone and iPad from day one, but never could get myself to go off Windows.
    Well, a few weeks ago I bought myself a 13.3" MBP (Mid 2014 - 11.1 model).
It's the retina one with a 256GB SSD in it.
    Now my question is...
I have a license from work for VMware Fusion 7, and I need some programs to run on Windows.
But I don't wan't to partition my drive and run it via bootcamp, I want to keep my Mac clean.
Does anyone have experience or know if I can run this on a SDXC card?
I would use a 128GB SDXC card with 60MB/s write and 80MB/s read.
Can I stick this SD into the slot, install Windows 8.1 Pro via Fusion on this card and let it run on a decent level?
    Thanks in advance,
    And with best regards,
    Sonicje

Thank you for the fast responds.
I took a look into it and you are right.
The read/write speed is much higher and cheaper.
But, like I said, I'm nog willing to share my drive with Windows.
So I'm going to buy a 64GB USB stick (less than 60 euro) and going to install it on that source.
With 64GB I've some extra space for the futher if I need to work with more Windows only programs.
    Thanks again for the advice!

  • USB interface locked for windows-based application via VMWare fusion 3

recently I found some applications based on windows XP (I used Vmware fusion 3 on mac OS X 10.6.3, macbook pro) can't find the h/w connected to USB interface..e.g.
I have a 3G wireless modem card, the console in windows (of course based on virtual machine VMWARE) says no any modem card founded when I connected to my mac pro with USB interface..
another case is I use ebank client s/w with U-key.. of course doesn't find any U-KEY when i insert it too..
It seems that the USB interface is locked when I use windows-base application via virtual machine, right?

yes, your suggestions are very useful.. I tried again..it asked me to select if connecting to "windows" or "mac".. I made the mistakes before.. Now I selected "windows" and it was okay..
btw, one more question about the bridge connection.. when I dial through my 3G modem card (based on windows XP), I just only use IE as the web browser.. Safari is not ok. I assumed that I should make a bridge connection between 3G modem card and LAN connection, right? If yes, how to do it? I can't select two connections once a time in control panel..
    Thanks for your answer!

  • Split screen software of LG ultra wide monitor won't start with windows 7 installed with VMWare Fusion

I am using split screen sofware of LG but it is not working for me with vmware fusion 7. Is this a known problem? I am using an ultra wide monitor of LG (29um65), and installed windows 7 on my mac, by using VMware Fusion. But the software won't work of LG. It won't start. LG can't help me, because normally the software is working by using windows 7 on a windows pc. I got it also working on a  mac , when I used other virtual software as Virtualbox VM, but it seems not to work with vmware fusion 7. Can somebody help me with this problem?

yes, I think you are right, but I used virtual box in the past, and had no problem with the LG software, so it has also to do wit VMWare Fusion I think.
Never the less we still don't have a solution :-)

  • How do I activate Windows 8 using vmware fusion on my MacBook Pro?

I have a MacBook pro and there are a few Windows programs that I need to run. So I purchased VMWARE Fusion 5 and Windows 8 pro. I installed both with no issues except now I'm being prompted to activate windows. When I go to activate it with the product key, it says that the product key is only able to be used for upgrading, but not a clean install. I'm not sure what I need to do now. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Yes as with Windows 7 if you used a Upgrade Win 7 disc it won't WANT To Activate and to get around it you do another install of Win 7 over the top of the original Win 7 install and it make it look like you are Upgrading and allows you to use an Upgrade key.
MS really screwed up with Win 8. There really isn't any FULL VERSION Windows 8 install DVDs. They are all Upgrade DVDs no matter how much you pay for it. So to do a Clean install, on real hardware or in a Virtual Machine, you have to jump through some hoops.

  • DirectX Windows 98 SE VMWare Fusion problem

Hey, i have some trouble. I got Windows 98 SE working on VMware Fusion but I can't launch Game Maker 3.3 or higher versions of it on Windows 98 SE. I installed DirectX 9.0c and nothing happens. I even tried DirectX 6 or 8.0. But nothing happens. I need to use game maker but I can't because it's telling me to install DirectX! Help!

I note that if I tell CL's download function that I have an SBLi've 5. on Win98se, it offers a webupdate package for Win95-WinME, which is somewhat older.
Prior to Win98se, there's no WDM support, and experience with Win98se seemed to be that it still worked better with VxD drivers. That's probably the reason, I'd guess.

  • Shut down issue on 27" iMac running Windows XP using VMWare Fusion 3

I'm running Windows XP on a 27" iMac using VMWare Fusion 3. When I try to shut down the Mac system without using Windows, a dark (not black) screen covers the screen from top to bottom and presents me with a screen, stating in multiple languages that I must press the power button for 5 seconds and then restart the Mac. Then the iMac will close normally.
However, if I run both the Mac system and Windows, and then close Windows, VMFWare Fusion 3, followed by the Mac system, the iMac shouts down normally.
What's going on? Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone have a solution?

I run XP under Fusion 3 and have not seen this issue. What you are getting is a Kernel Panic. There should be more information in your console logs about the reason.
Here is some info on KPs to help you.

Energy Saver is very problematic with non-Apple USB devices.  Which means when you close the lid to your machine, those devices will not necessarily appear until you next restart the computer.
Secondly, Windows XP is not secure anymore, unless you pay Microsoft a special licensing fee.  To avoid that, upgrade to at leats Windows Vista:

  • Can't boot into Mac OS after Windows install via Bootcamp

    Hello.
Last night I installed Windows 7 on my Macbook Pro early 2011 via Bootcamp. After some major complications I was able to finally install Windows 7 and boot into it. Now I can't boot back into my "Macintosh HD" partition, it shows a no entry sign.
Hard Disk : 320GB Internal Sata
Partitions : 3 -> Mac, Bootcamp and 10.8 Recovery Partition
The good part is that I can still access the Mac OS partition in Windows and Windows is working perfectly fine. As a matter of fact right now I'm on the bootcamped windows.
I have a full time machine backup but still I am looking for a way to solve this without formatting the HDD.
    Things I have tried:
    1. Resetting NVRAM and PRAM
    2. Booting into 10.8 recovery partition and running DU.
    SMART Status : Verified
"Macintosh HD" grayed and Not Mounted
    Successful Verify Permissions (Twice)
Is there a way to solve this? Though the Mountain Lion partition shows when I press the Alt/option key on startup but I can't somehow boot into it.
    Thanks

Your problem is OS X is refusing to boot.
There is still a bootable volume on the Macintosh HD partition, it's just not working.
You can #8 Reinstall Just OS X while command r booted from the Recovery partition, as long as you don't use Disk Utility to erase the Macintosh HD partition, your files and programs remain.
Hook the computer via Ethernet cable to a router (or modem, power reset required) with a fast relaible internet connection, you will need your AppleID and password to reinstall OS X.

  • Am currently running Windows 7 (under VMWare Fusion 5.x) on a Macbook Pro. When running Windows 8 Upgrade ***'t, I get a Secure Boot compatibility notification

The Microsoft Upgrade Assistant identifies several issues related to compatibility of my system with a Windows 8 upgrade which I'm considering on my Macbook Pro (which is runnng OS X 10.8.2).  The message indicates that there is a firmware incompatibility with Microsoft's recently introduced Secure Boot.  Is there a resolution on the Apple side?  If there is not and none can be expected, does this rule out installation of Windows 8 altogether on my system?

Given that what the MUA is seeing is a virtual computer created by the Fusion environment, the problem lies more in VMWare's realm, rather than Apple's. Which would be the case if you were running on BootCamp instead.
Am running Fusion 4 and haven't upgraded (long story), so I have no knowledge if the latest update to Fusion 5 already incorporates the Windows 8 profile when creating, updating or running a VM, so as to satisfy MS's paranoid requirements. So, assuming you are running Fusion 5, maybe checking in VMWare's forums may yield more up to date info.
OTOH, given that MS is betting the whole farm on Win8, would not suprise me in the least that they would shut down virtualization support in all but a special, more expensive, Win8Virtual edition.......
Edit: BTW, the latest Oracle VirtualBox does incorporate Win8 profiles in both 32 and 64 bit versions, so it would not suprise me that the latest Fusion 5 did as well.

  • HP Color laserjet 2840 Windows XP (under VMware Fusion on a Mac).

I have been using this printer succesfully for years and now all of a sudden when installing it to a new machine it keeps giving the error " page to complex" then refuses to print this is the first time i have used it via a usb port as it has always been on the network via a hub. i have tried to revert to the hub but it will not install "no printers found " etc etc.
Is there a series of key pushes on the printer that will remove everything from memory and allow me to start again?
i thought i had cured it but a spurious printer keeps installing itself in the printers and faxes (color laserjet 2840:#1
any advice would be great thanks

The cable for your card reader has been knocked lose - if you pop the side cover off you can put the cable back on.  If the cable is firmly attached, then the card reader has died.  There was supposed to be a 2830 released that had the fax but no card reader but at some point they canceled that decision.  However the firmware was written for all 3 models, so when the printer sees a fax but no card reader it reports itself as a 2830.
The squeaking carousel and not pulling from tray 2 means it needs servicing by a genuinely trained HP tech on that particular model.  Tray 2 should be easy enough to fix, but the carousel may need to be realigned and that is not an easy job.  You may have to call around or go out of your way, but find a service center that is certified in this model printer.
I've worked on this models myself for a couple years - if you think one squeaking carousel is bad, try listening to 4 or 5 of them all at the same time!!!
