I'm concerned about my mac being infected by the flashback virus and I don't know if I should purchase antivirus software or not.  If anyone can recomment any that would be very nice.  Thankyou

Well, if you applied Apple patches for 10.6.8 & up, then no.

In order to avoid detection, the installer will first look for the presence of some antivirus tools and other utilities that might be present on a power user's system, which according to F-Secure include the following:
    /Library/Little Snitch
    /Developer/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/MacOS/Xcode
    /Applications/VirusBarrier X6.app
    /Applications/iAntiVirus/iAntiVirus.app
    /Applications/avast!.app
    /Applications/ClamXav.app
    /Applications/HTTPScoop.app
    /Applications/Packet Peeper.app
If these tools are found, then the malware deletes itself in an attempt to prevent detection by those who have the means and capability to do so. Many malware programs use this behavior, as was seen in others such as the Tsunami malware bot.

  • HT1529 How do I know if I have antivirus software on this Mac, I am knew to Mac so I don't know a thing about it.

How do I know if my mac has antivirus software and if not why did they not tell me that when I bought it?

Apple products do NOT come with Anti-Virus software installed.  There has not yet ever been an OS X Virus.  But, if you would feel safer using A-V software, then I would suggest you download and install the excellent quality and FREE A-V product found here (and, yes, I myself use it):

  • Antivirus Software On a Mac running Parallels 9 with Windows 7

I converted to a Macbook Air last fall and have found that the general online consensus is that it is not necessary to run an anitvirus software.  However, I run Parallels 9 on my Mac, so that I can run a virtual Windows 7 environment (needed this for work).  My question is should I run an AV software in my windows platform?  I've searched the support for both Parallels and Windows and haven't found answers.
Thanks in advance for any advice that can be offered.

Windows is still Windows, even when running on a Mac.
Viruses that are downloaded into the Windows part *almost never* cross into MAc (never say *never*), but viruses can corrupt the windows install to to pooint it is unusable.  Always use both common sense and antivirus for Windows in the windows install.

  • What is the best antivirus software for ma, what is the best antivirus software for mac

I'm looking for good antivirus software for my Mac --- any suggestions?

OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it updated with software updates from Apple.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources. Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Disable Java in Safari > Preferences > Security.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Block browser popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > and check "Block popup windows":
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but popups have devolved to become a common means to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever see a popup indicating it detected registry errors, that your Mac is infected with some ick, or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

  • Free antivirus software

    Hi:
Does anyone know of a free antivirus software available for mac 10.5.8?  Thanks very much in advance.

The most commonly recommended antivirus for OS X is ClamXav:

  • What is good anti virus software for the mac?

What is good antivirus software for the Mac?  I think I've been hacked.

ClamXav from http://www.clamxav.com . Be cautious of other antivirus software as some, not all just some, can cause system issues.  I've used ClamXav for years with no issues with it.
By the way, you may get some responses to this question along the lines of "there are no mac virus's so you don't need antivirus software". While it's true there are no mac virus's today, in my opinion, it's like the stock market in that past performance is not a guarantee for the future.
If you scan these discussions, you'll find hours of reading on this question ....

  • Do imac need antivirus software

do OS X 10.8.4 need antivirus.I recently come across Mac Keeper antivirus software on my mac. What to do with that and how to remove it from mac

Read the comment by SDW2001 in this thread.
Remove "MacKeeper" as follows. First, back up all data.
"MacKeeper" has only one useful feature: it deletes itself.
Note: These instructions apply to the version of the product that I downloaded and tested in early 2012. I can't be sure that they apply to other versions.
IMPORTANT: "MacKeeper" has what the developer calls an “encryption” feature. In my tests, I didn't try to verify what this feature really does. If you used it to “encrypt” any of your files, “decrypt” them before you uninstall, or (preferably) restore the files from backups made before they were “encrypted.” As the developer is not trustworthy, you should assume that the "decrypted" files are corrupt unless proven otherwise.
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Applications
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-A. The "MacKeeper" application is in the folder that opens. Quit it if it's running, then drag it to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your login password. Click the Uninstall MacKeeper button in the dialog that appears. All the functional components of the software will be deleted. Reboot.
Failure to remove MacKeeper will result from neglecting any one of these points:
Quit MacKeeper before dragging it to the Trash.
Don't empty the Trash after dragging the application to it. Let MacKeeper delete itself.
Don't try to drag the MacKeeper icon in the Dock to the Trash.
Here are some general suggestions. If you want your computer to be usable, don't install crapware, such as “themes,” "haxies," “add-ons,” “toolbars,” “enhancers," “optimizers,” “accelerators,” "boosters," “extenders,” “cleaners,” "doctors," "tune-ups," “defragmenters,” “firewalls,” "barriers," “guardians,” “defenders,” “protectors,” most “plugins,” commercial "virus scanners,” "disk tools," or "utilities." With very few exceptions, this stuff is useless, or worse than useless.
The more actively promoted the product, the more likely it is to be garbage. The most extreme example is the “MacKeeper” scam.
The only software you should install is that which directly enables you to do the things you use a computer for — such as creating, communicating, and playing — and does not modify the way other software works. Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it.

  • Antivirus Software - any suggestions?

    Hello
I have a MacBook Pro 10.4.11 which I think may have a virus (someone told me that when I recently sent them an email, when they opened the email a virus started to download. And I get fireworks or UFOs appearing on the screen sometimes!?)
Can anyone suggest the best antivirus software for my Mac please?!
    Thanks, Anna

Also, if you are thinking about installing a anti-virus program on your mac you should check out an article that resurfaced from a year or two ago.http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/12/01/applenow_encourages_antivirus_use_for_mac_osx.html
Apple recommends the following antivirus software programs:Intego's VirusBarrier X5, McAfee's VirusScan for Mac, and Symantec's Norton Anti-Virus 11
With a PC I have run Norton and McAfee and found both to take up a lot of system resources.

  • Is there any free antivirus software for my macbook pro

I was wondering is there any free antivirus software for the mac pro

    Look at this:
    http://www.clamxav.com/
    Or this:
    http://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-tools/sophos-antivirus-for-mac-home-ed ition.aspx
Both are free & won't necessarily muck up your system. Read about both & decide yourself.

  • Thoughts on Antivirus Software

    Hey guys & gals!
I'm in two minds regarding whether or not I should install some Internet security / antivirus software on my mac.
Essentially I would like the general consensus on whether or not such software is necessary and if so is anyone able to suggest their favored packages. Also is their likely to be a notable impact upon browsing and/or processing speed
    Thanks in advance
    Regards, Liam

There is no consensus, but if you search these forums you'll find that most people think commercial "anti-virus" products are worse than useless. The reasons for that opinion are as follows:
No Mac viruses are known to exist. Mac trojans do exist, but their presence is very obvious.
The Mac OS has built-in detection of known Mac trojans.
The anti-virus products are intrusive, resource-intensive, and destabilizing.
Your best protection against Internet crime is not software but common sense. If you enjoy wasting your time hunting for nonexistent viruses, use ClamXav, which is free and doesn't destabilize your system. It will also detect Windows malware, which is its only real use.

That message is just a standard one issued, mainly for Windows users, you can disregard it if you didn't install any anti-virus. (OS X has one installed by Apple that doesn't interfere)
It's just some forms of anti-malware are really paranoid and lock the entire machine down. (like Norton)

Your MacBook Air is an Intel-based system. To download the current version (11.2.202.228),  go to http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ and download it from there.
If there is still a Flash issue, you can try the Google Chrome browser, which has the current Flash built into it, to see if it works any differently with the videos. It's available from https://www.google.com/chrome
