Any 1st Gen iPod users out there? M8541

All this talk about shiny new iPods has got me all nostalgic over my lovely old 1st gen scroll wheel model (M8541). Alas the hard disk died on that a year ago and it's been gathering dust ever since.
I've been Googling trying to find others in the same predicament, and hopefully some details on how to obtain a new/refurbed hard disk and bring the old timer back to life. Alas, I've not got very far as yet, which either means my searching skills aren't up to much, or it's just way too difficult so no-one's succeeded.
What I'd really like is to find some kind of flash memory with the same ATA-5 interface used by the original disk, so I can have something a bit more durable in there. I'm sure this must be possible and am hoping there might be someone out there who's tried the same or knows enough to convince me I'm wasting my time.

Price is good too, though the part number is MK5002MAL-R where my original doesn't have the -R on the end, so not sure it's a drop-in replacement.

Firebook 1.67Ghz Mac OS X (10.4.7) 1st gen iPod and Nano

I have this model too. Is yours a 5 or 10 GB? Also, I you using it on Win or Mac? Mine is Mac but want to use it on Win.....is it possible to reformat it to work? I;ll see if my search skills can help ya find a new HD for yours.

Unfortunately software always moves faster than hardware.
Apple's not going to change things. You can try talking to those two app developers and have them make their older versions available.

Any Logic 8 / EWQLSO users out there?

I am using Logic 8.0.1 on a PPC G5 iMac and I'm getting some weird problems with the East West Quantum Leap Sound Orchestra, apart from the fact that I won't be able to use it when I get an intel mac! My soundcard is an RME Fireface 800.
It all runs smoothly as long as i only use it in certain configurations. You know when you boot the plugin, you get a choice of which configuration you want to use.
These work fine:
Mono
Stereo
16 x mono
5.1
These produce some bizarre digi feedvback / pink noise type sounds:
16 x stereo
1 x 5.1, 15 mono
and all the others in the list basically...
I'm not worried about 5.1 as I don't work with that format but I would like to use 16 x stereo Can anyone explain why this is happening, is it a bug or am I doing something wrong.

I'm experiencing exactly the same problem with the Trilogy wrapper. Spectrasonics support recommends increasing buffer size. I tried (from 128->1056) to no avail. On playback with the wrapper instantiated on a track, my Apogee Ensemble overloads due to an extremely loud click - then, silence - no audio. Unchecking the wrapper in the Logic AU Manager solves the problem. It's obviously a "wrapper-induced" problem which Spectrasonics has difficulty dealing with
Spectrasonics has no apparent solution nor do I. At this point I'll punt on Trilogy. Their support team told me not to expect a new Trilogy until after their STEAM-based Omnisphere is released on September 15, 2008. The universal binary version of Trilogy will also be STEAM-based.

I need to convert a CS5.5 file of approx. 6 mbs to an XML mark up language file ASAP. I didn't realize they were incompatible an. d due to some software snafu's created it in 5.5. I now need the file in CS5 and have uninstalled Cs5.5 and am not interested in downloading it again.

TS3694 Just took my 1st gen iPod out of it's original box, never used before. Plugged it into my new Mac book Pro and it recognizes that the iPod is in recovery mode but when I click to restore, error 1611 comes up - but that error code doesn't say what

I had an 8GB 1st gen iPod in it's original box in storage and just took it out to hook it up. Charged it overnight, plugged it into new Mac Book Pro and it was recognized as being an iPod in recovery but other identifying information was all indicated as "n/a" (so, unknown OS, etc). Error code 1604 came up so I downloaded iTunes on the Mac Book and it is currently showing version 10. But now when I try to restore the iPod, error code 1611 comes up and the troubleshooting doesn't tell me what else to try. The USB connector that came with the iPod was also never used before - brand new also from the box so that should be fine. I also tried a different USB port on the Mac Book. Any ideas?

This error typically occur when security software interferes with the restore and update process. FollowTroubleshooting security software issues to resolve this issue. In rare cases, this error may be a hardware issue. If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.

Yes, once the content is in iTunes on your computer, just click it to play and authorise your computer to play it by entering your Dad's ID and password.
Log into your own account and start purchasing your own content which will then be added to the existing content.

ANY radio app for 1st gen iPod touch?? Even with Wifi!?

Firstly, I know the 1st gen ipod touch does not have a radio receiver..this is not my problem.
I've been looking for an app that I can listen to the radio on..even through wifi...but am not finding any that will work with the 1st gen. For example, I download TuneIn radio which I have on my itunes, blackberry, and tablet...but it is only compatible with newer generations of the ipod touch. I am on version 3.1.3 which I believe is the most up-to-date.
In short, I'm absolutely fine to use wifi to listen to the radio, but simply can't find an app (ideally a free one) that will even let me sync the app from my itunes to the ipod.
Suggestions would be very welcome!

I have tried to clear temp folder, uninstalled, and reinstalled itunes version 10.5.1.42... ipod touch 4th gen is seen fine. But when I eject this and plug in my old shuffle... itunes still reports it as ipod touch.

The only suggestion I have is to try and rename your device in iTunes to something else by clicking it's current name from under the Devices section in the left hand pane of iTunes and typing in a new one.

Out of date 1st Gen Ipod touch

I have a 1st Gen Ipod touch, but i cant download apps because its software only goes to 3.1.3. Can it be updated past this or can I bring it in and get a new one being that I am a faithful customer?

Sorry, no they will not replace it with a new one. You will need to sell the old iPod and purchase a new one.

So WHY would I want to purchase iOS3 for my 1st gen iPod?

Hi there. I've just upgraded my MacBook hdd and OS X. Now when I plug my 1st gen iPod touch in to sync, it says that there's an iOS 3 available and that 2-4 gen iPods get it for free, but 1st gen have to purchase it.
Unfortunately, my iPod doesn't seem to be syncing without this upgrade. So, either there's something wrong or else they're trying to force me to buy it (though it doesn't ay so). I'm not against purchasing an upgrade if I see the advantages. But as it stands, I'm quite happy with my iPod the way it is. I've looked and looked, but I can't find anything that tells my WHY I would want to purchase an upgrade. Mac support pages are completely vague, just explaining that 1st gen must pay for it.
Any insight into the sitch?

Thanks, but I was hoping for a more subjective, feedback sort of answer.
I did see that Wiki, but it doesn't answer me really. It gives me technical stuff, but nothing that seems to make it stand out from the former iOS's that explains why a user would find it advantageous to purchase it. It includes a little bug fix for this, a little bug fix for that, security upgrades...all stuff standard to regular OS updates that no one should have to pay for. Not why apple would require one to BUY it. (e.g. upgrading from one OS X to a newer one includes pretty obvious new features.) No outstanding new features jump out at me when staring at that dry dry listing of whatnot.
Looking at it again, it seems that it might be useful for an iPhone as an upgrade. But for the iPod touch it seems absurd to force us to buy it.
I've upgraded my iTunes, and NOW it says that my iPod IS up-to-date. Still, it won't sync (although it recognizes my iPod just find.) What is the deal?!

1st Gen iPod Touch cannot login to iTunes or App Store

My relative's 1st Gen iPod Touch (fully updated) cannot login to iTunes or App Store. Specifically, when the prompt on the iPod touch for their Apple ID, they can type in their ID and password fine, but tapping on "cancel" or "OK" does nothing. The iPod touch is effectively frozen, the only option being to hit the Home button to get out.
This happens when trying to purchase an item in iTunes, the App Store, and when accessing the Apple ID account through Settings.app on the iPod touch.
An Apple Store genius recommended restoring, but this did not help. Other internet features (safari, mail, facebook, etc.) work fine. They are still able to download apps through iTunes and then sync them over. Any suggestions?

We just tried to do a fresh restore to factory settings. Unfortunately, the exactly same problem persists.
A little more information, after the username and password are entered, OK can be pressed, but the prompt doesn't go away, and there is a persistent "loading..." sign in the background. This is where the iPod hangs. Here's a picture of what it looks like.

HELP: 1st Gen iPod Locking After 1.5 Update.

Ever since i applied the v1.5 update to my 1st Gen iPod, playback locks, using any menu function causes the iPod to lock; if I can get a song to play, half way through a song, the iPod locks of the apple logo shows up.
Can someone tell me how to go back to a previous version of the OS/Firmwere.
Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Sorry I do not know - but I suggest you try the following first
A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
Then
For Mac computer
1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”

1st gen iPod pauses or skips

I have a 1st gen iPod from 2001 that I still use daily. However, it has beginning to pause or skip occasionally, even when on my desk. I assume that the disk is having trouble reading data from the drive. I've restored the iPod with the apple utility but there was no effect in the pause behavior. I assume that them must be some bad sectors on the disk causing problems. Is there any way to perform a low-level format on the drive, and would this help the skipping? Anyone have any software repair suggestions other than the Apple software? I would rather not invest too much money in this, as it is a old, abused iPod.

Twitter App. for 1st Gen. iPod Touch

I recently was having problems with the Twitter App. on my 1st Gen. iPod Touch and so decided to delete the app and re-download it again, like I had done a week earlier. During the download an error message popped up stating that I need ios 6 or later to download the app. Apple had updated the Twitter App on March 10th and I tried re-downloading March 14th, however a week earlier I was offered the opportunity to download an earlier version of Twitter. I am currently only able to use Twitter via Safari. Does anyone out there have a solution to get the official Twitter App. (And no "Buy a newer iPod stuff"!)

Starting when iOS 7 was released, Apple now allows downloading the last compatible version of some apps (iOS 4.2.1 and later only)
App Store: Install the latest compatible version of an app
Apple did not say why did not allow this option for iOS 3.1.3/1G iPod.
