Any advantage to saving a file as a tiff or pds when first working on it?

I have a point and shoot camera that takes great pictures but only saves in JPEG format.
I've been using PSE 10 to process them but I've been wondering if there would be some advantage to immediately saving them as TIFF's or PSD's when importing them? I'm thinking specifically about loss of clarity or crispness.

Before I shot raw I only captured jpegs.  I learned a while ago that you can process a jpeg image in ACR, but you've got to remember that the jpeg is a compressed image that will already have had certain criteria addressed in camera (brightness, contrast, sharpening, etc.).  Raw images are totally unprocessed (and non destructable) so they're akin to the negatives you used to have with film.
Where ACR can be really useful when processing jpeg images is with the wider range of exposure adjusters at your disposal, e.g. Temperature, Exposure, Recovery, Fill Light, Blacks, Brightness, Contrast, Clarity, etc.  You'll be amazed at how much information you can pull out of an underexposed jpeg using these tools, as opposed to the simple Levels adjustments in PSE.  When you're done in ACR you just click Open as usual and the image appears in Editor for further tweaking.  Finally, having cropped and sharpened, you can then save it as a jpeg image.
The quickest way to open a jpeg in ACR is as follows:
Open Editor
Select File>Open As
Select Camera Raw (from the drop down menu at the foot of the window that has just opened)
Locate the jpeg file from your hard drive (or wherever)
Click Open and the ACR page will appear with your picture ready for processing
Proceed as you would with any other raw file
Good luck!

    Turn Time Machine OFF temporarily in its preference pane. Leave the window open.
    Navigate in the Finder to your backup disk, and then to the folder named "Backups.backupdb" at the top level of the volume. If you back up over a network, you'll first have to mount the disk image file containing your backups by double-clicking it. Descend into the folder until you see the snapshots, which are represented by folders with a name that begins with the date of the snapshot. Find the one you want to restore from. There's a link named "Latest" representing the most recent snapshot. Use that one, if possible. Otherwise, you'll have to remember the date of the snapshot you choose.
    Inside the snapshot folder is a folder hierarchy like the one on the source disk. Find one of the items you can't restore and select it. Open the Info dialog for the selected item. In the Sharing & Permissions section, you may see an entry in the access list that shows "Fetching…" in the Name column. If so, click the lock icon in the lower right corner of the dialog and authenticate. Then delete the "Fetching…" item from the icon list. Click the gear icon below the list and select Apply to enclosed items from the popup menu.
    Now you should be able either to copy the item in the Finder or to restore it in the time-travel view. If you use the time-travel view, be sure to select the snapshot you just modified. If successful, repeat the operation with the other items you were unable to restore. You can select multiple items in the Finder and open a single Info dialog for all of them by pressing the key combination option-command-I.
    When you're done, turn TM back ON and close its preference pane.

  • Saving a file as a TIFF

    Hi All,
    I am new to this so not sure how it normally goes...
    I am having a problem with saving out a file I have created in ID. I need to save it out as a TIFF but just noticed that this isnt an option in ID.
    I need to create a file which is 140 cm x 180 cm and save it as a TIFF as this is  the only file format my digital fabric printer will accept. The finished file will consist of some text but mainly images and vector graphics. I did try and make the file in AI but when i tried to save out as a TIFF at 180 dpi a message popped up....
    'the combination of artwork and resolution exceeds the maximum'
    Does anyone have any tips or a way around this? I am quite new to Adobe so not sure which program would be best to create such file.
    Thanks,
    KK

    Thanks thats great. Would you recommend I use ID or AI for this type of file in future?

  • .pdf method-any advantage?

    Any advantage in 'saving/export as' .pdf from InDesign vs. using the print method if the result will be going to service provider for high-end digital output?
    I see the advantages in the layers, but is the quality of that .pdf: equal to or similar to if you sent the native file?

  • Blank saved AOL files

    SInce I installed Mavericks and AOL 1.7.784 and then tried to get everything linked with iPhone and iCloud... I can no longer open any of my saved AOL files.  They are all blank and show no content.  Errror message says no application is available to open the files.  I uninstalled and reinstalled latest version of AOL desktop and that did solve the issue.  What did I do wrong?  Any ideas on getting back my files?  All my back ups and all of my apple products are this way, two lap tops, iPhone, I Pad, and one iMac.  I've had nothing but trouble with Apple Mail in Mavericks and now this issue.  I don't know where to start.

    I am using Mail 7.1.
    Incoming server=IMAP.AOL.COM
    Outgoing server=SMTP.AOL.COM
    There are many other items - too many to copy.
    If I were you, I would delete the account from Apple Mail and then add it again. I have done this in the past. It is a pain, but finally got me back on the air.
    As an aside, AOL has some sort of authentication problem at the moment. Another post indicated they are aware of it - no planned solution time.
    Have you accessed your AOL mail via the Internet? That is my workaround when AOL has had problems in the past.

    In the process of saving a file a power surge rebooted computer. Any chance of recovering file?

    Have a look at the sample script below. The "while" loop waits for the specified number of milliseconds, then reads the contents of a directory and processes every individual file in the directory. In my example, it just prints the file path to the console. You would replace this part with your Open / Save as / Move sequence.
    For more file system commands, refer to Adobe's Javascript Tools Guide, "File object functions".
    var stop = false;
    while( stop==false ) {
        // Wait for 20.000 ms
        $.sleep(20000);
        var fld = new Folder("c:/incoming");
        var filesInFld = fld.getFiles("*.fm");
        for(var f=0; f < filesInFld.length; f++) {
            // process the individual file
            $.writeln(filesInFld[f]);
        // Exit the  loop after 19:00
        var time = new Date();
        if( time.getHours() > 19 ) stop = true;

  • FCP file sizes are twice the size of Quicktime's - any advantage to FCP?

    When I capture footage from my Canon HV40 MiniDV using FCP, the file sizes are almost twice the size as when I capture using Quicktime's Device Native setting. Is there any advantage to capturing with FCP, as the quality seems the same in QT? Or is there a way to reduce the file size being captured in FCP?
    I'd like to be able to capture in FCP because if there is a dropped frame in the recording, Quicktime stops recording, whereas FCP keeps going and starts a new file. But the larger file size in FCP puts me off.

    Not all codecs are editable...meaning, not all work in an editing application. I'm not sure what "device native" captures as in QT. Does it say in GET INFO? But FCP captures HDV and DV native, but in a native format that it can work with. HDV comes in as HDV...Dv as DV.
    I wouldn't trust what QT is capturing as DEVICE NATIVE. And 13GB/hour of footage is not that much. That's the lowest data rate format out there.

    There is no difference in the two files. They are both DV Stream (.dv).
    If you look in the Movie Properties window you'll notice that both tracks (audio and video) have the same file size.
    Obviously, this can't mean that the audio track is really as large as the video track in data size. It means that the only way QuickTime can "separate" the stream into two editable tracks is to duplicate them (but ignore the video playback of the audio track portion).
    I don't use Final Cut but I would suspect it might make two files (audio and video) instead of a single file made by QuickTime Player Pro.
    Confusing, isn't it?

  • TS3991 Can not open any of my iCloud saved, TextEdit files

    I only occasionally use TextEdit but have been saving my files to iCloud recently.  All acesses are between my Mac and iCloud.  There are no other devices accessing these files.  Yet today, I can not open any of my iCloud files.  TextEdit always returns "Document <file> could not be opened".  That's it.  What can I do?
    I am running 10.8.4.

    Possibly a temporary situation, give it a little time before doing anything drastic. Do you use Time Machine or any other back up facility.

  • Can't seem to be able to open a saved numbers file. Any ideas why?

    Hi everyone!
    I have my budget in numbers. Today I can't open one of the spreadsheets. I have no idea what happened since I work on these every day and have never had issues. And there's no help from Numbers either, it just says the file cannot be opened.
    Any ideas? I would really appreciate any tips or tricks you have to get me to open this.
    Thx

    May you give details ?
    Which precise operating system ? At this time we may just assume that you are running OSX and it's not sure because quite everyday we see question related to Numbers for iOS.
    Which precise version of Numbers ?
    If you are asking about Numbers for OSX, I'm always puzzled by this kind of qiuestion.
    The basic rule when we work on important dats on a computer is to keep several consecutive versions and to never save a file upon the one which we just opened.
    If you break this rule, you may be sure that one day, you will open a file, make changes and corrupt the file during the save process.
    In such case, the datas are lost.
    If you run under Lion, you may go to :
    Versions as a recovery tool
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3303794
    You would get two scripts allowing you to extract a version from the datas stored by the system in a hidden folder.

  • Can we start a relatively elementary thread about the quality level of a saved .jpg file and its relation to camera resolution settings, if any?

    My daughter has thousands of photos shot with a maximum resolution setting on her camera, each one occupying an approximately 4 MB file and apparently capable of generating a quality 32x48 print -- clearly a case of overkill.  I think she's doing it because she thinks it will maximize print quality.  I know it's exhausting our disk space.
    In PSE9, I've taken a sample .jpg file (4 MB) and saved it as three .jpg files: at maximum quality (5.2 MB), 50% quality (934 KB), and minimum quality (359 KB).  Note that the minimum quality file represents a 90% reduction in disk space! Then for each of these four sizes, I printed it on letter-size plain paper, and again on 4x6 photo paper.  They looked identical to me.  I asked her to compare them (she did not know which photos had which quality) and with her calibrated eyeballs she thought that the minimum quality was a bit more "pixellated".
    I successfully experimented with the editor's "Process Multiple Files" to resize the photos and I am pleased with its performance on my iMac -- less than seven minutes to convert 197 photos.  As a further test,  I ran 5 photos four times: low-quality and high quality, each at 300 dpi and 600 dpi.  Again I saw no apparent difference between 300 dpi low and high quality on letter-size plain paper, but I was taken aback to see the 600 dpi print as approx. 4x6 in the center of the letter-size paper.  I took another look at the four of them in the PSE workplace, and sure enough, the 300 dpi files showed up approximately letter-sized and the 600 dpi files showed up as approximately 4x6.
    Obviously I'm dealing with apples and oranges here, and this is why I'd like to see some elementary-level conversation on this subject.

    Thanks for the hints, Lundberg. Google led to ImageJ. Rather difficult to understand what it does, but fun to play around with. Further reading led me to this statement:
    Another sinusoidal transform (i.e. transform with sinusoidal base functions) related to the DFT is the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT).
    And since jpeg is based on the DCT I thought: simply compressing an image at jpeg and looking at the file size will probably give info re the sharpness of the image. At maximum jpeg setting, there was a significant reduction in file size for a particular image when I applied a Gaussian Blur. So all I have to do is work out how to relate the jpeg file size to the minimum acceptable resolution.
    Anyway, thanks for the suggestion.
