Any advantages to using .mac vs. AIM account?

I have both a .mac account and an AIM account. Currently I use my AIM account almost exclusively for iChat, and I was just wondering if there are any advantages to using my .mac over the free AIM.
Also if friends of mine wanted to add my .mac name to their AIM what information would I give them? just [email protected]?

hi Sup909,
Encryption. Mac to Mac with both having @mac names
Otherwise, No.

  • Any Advantages With A Mac?

Are there any advantages to using an iPhone with a Mac, as opposed to using it with a PC? Does the iPhone work better/faster with a Mac, or is there no difference?

I'm no Windows fan, but let's not make this look worse than it is.
    * For e-mail, you need to buy Outlook, 'cos the iPhone doesn't work with Windows XP Outlook Express or Windows Vista Windows Mail, right?
It's supposed to work with Outlook Express. (Free)
    * For the Address Book, you need to buy Outlook (again) 'cos the iPhone doesn't work with Windows XP Address Book or Windows Vista Windows Contact, right?
Doesn't work with Address Book, but not needed. (See above.)
    * For photos, you need to buy Photoshop Elements. I guess the new Windows Photo Gallery in Vista doesn't work with the iPhone?
"iPhone uses iTunes to sync your photos from...any picture folder on a PC."
A final question, how do you get photos taken with your iPhone onto your PC? I imagine there isn't a clever automatic way of syncing them from the iPhone to your PC. Is there the facility to manually drag the files off the iPhone and onto your desktop?
See above. I believe Windows also see it as a USB camera, so it should automatically open it as a folder so you can drag the files to the folder of your choice. Since in IS a camera in Windows, I would guess other photo processing software in Windows would work too, just like any other camera.
But you really do WANT a Mac.

  • Are there any advantages of using Secure Empty Trash over regular Empty Trash?

Are there any advantages of using Secure Empty Trash over regular Empty Trash?

If you are going to run around with sensitive files on your file system, you might be better off using a whole disk encryption so that every file is encrypted, any deleted file contains encrypted contents.  As long a no one can access your files using your encrytpion keys, all your data is secure.
Also secure delete is not really going to do much on a Solid State Drive, and again whole disk encryption would be a better choice.
For a moderate amount of data, secure erase does not take too much time. But if you have a ton of file and/or a few really large files to erase, secure erase can take a long time to complete as it is doing multiple pass to write and overwrite the file's storage with patterns of data that make it extremely difficult to recover the original data.  That takes time.
Finally, if you have been updating a document, previous editions may have been given over to free storage as new versions are written, such that when you decide to erase the file you may only be doing secure erase on the most recent copy.

  • IChat - iMac to iMac - but .mac to AIM account

I am having trouble iChatting with a friend who has a brand new iMac (with built in iSight) and who is using an AIM account. I have an iMac and a .mac account and have been iChatting for many years without troubles.
She appears in my buddy list with a video icon but when we attempt to start an ichat, it says "starting iChat..." but then an error message comes up that says "...failed to accept iChat" despite her accepting the invitation.
Does my friend have to have a .mac account to make iChat AV work?
    Any other suggestions?
    Thanks

    HI Buck,
Your download speed should be what you are paying for. Most ISP sell their service based on download speed. However you can test it.
    Here http://www.auditmypc.com/internet-speed-test.asp
In iChat there is also a setting that will cap theBandwidth it uses.
Go to iChat > Preferences > Video section > Bandwidth drop down and set to NONE.
The range orf ports are not enough.
The Apple Doc 93208 was wrttien for Panther and has two badly done updates, which
    1) do not point out that the Mac Firewall contains UDP and TCP settings now.
    2) That you might need ports 16384-16403 (well it does but not well)
    3) It wrongly lists those same ports in Note 1. as being TCP when they are in fact UDP
    4) It misses making it clear there are two other ports sometimes needed 5353 for the Bonjour side and 5223 for some Jabber logins (Google talk and others)

  • Is there any advantage in using Vault over Time Machine?

    Hi all,
Yesterday I imported around 6000+ pictures from iPhoto and consolidated them into my Aperture library. After much re-organisation into projects, folders etc. I decided to update my backup Vault to preserve all my hard work. The Vault is located on a connected external drive with plenty of spare storage. I had previously backed up successfully to the vault when there was only a few dozen pictures in my library.
After initiating the Vault update process I then left it to get on it (and to have dinner and then watch the football...) and after several hours was dismayed to find that the process appeared to be stuck at just over 50% completion. It was obvious that no further progress was being made.
I was also concerned that there appeared to be no mechanism to cancel the process and the only course of action I could take was to apply a Force Quit against Aperture - not something that I care to do, if I can possibly avoid it.
After a rudimentary search of this community I saw that several others had experienced the same problem - although some suggested that a fix had been applied in recent versions (although I am running the latest version).
Given this, I'm reluctant to use the Vault again - particularly as there appears to be no means of cancelling a stuck job. I do however use Time Machine, so my questions are:
    1) Do I really need to use Vault if I have Time Machine making regular backups of my Aperture library to an external drive?
    2) Does using Vault give any advantages over Time Machine?
    3) Is anyone else experiencing this problem with the current version of Aperture (v3.3)?
    4) Is there anyway of cancelling a stuck Vault update other than the sledgehammer approach of Force Quit?
    Thanks in anticipation,
    Simon.

    SImon,
Vault and Time Machine address different needs. Probably you will want to have both.
The advantage of Time Machine: incremental backups of previous versions, very compact storage. And you can integrate it into your regular backup of the whole system and include the regular masters as well. But the disadvantage: Time Machine decides for you, what will be deleted, if the backup drives get full. You do not have control over what will be saved and what not from the previous versions.
The advantage of vaults: You can make full backups of your library for well defined moments in time - snapshots of important states. I'd create a vault, whenever I make a major upgrade of the system at least.
Is there anyway of cancelling a stuck Vault update other than the sledgehammer approach of Force Quit?
If the graphical user interface is unresponsive, like when updating a vault, you can use the Terminal to send the "termination signal" to Aperture: Sometimes this will succeed, even if the "Quit" button does not work:
Look for the Process ID of Aperture in the Activity Monitor (launch Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor" and click the CPU heading. This will bring Aperture close to the top of the list. Make a note of the PID number in the first column, in this case 66550.
Launch a Terminal window and enter the following command:
kill -TERM 66550           (insert Aperture's PID instead of 66550)
This will send the "Software Termination Signal - TERM to Aperture, the same as pressing the "Quit" button should do, but send it directly, and not from the GUI that is unresponsive. This way I always succeded in cancelling a vaul update without force quitting. Not all processes can be terminated this way, however. The Terminal.app is also in the Applications > Utilities folder.

  • Any advantages of using HD in an SD project?

    Hi there,
Apologies if this question has been asked and answered - I ran a search but couldn't find a "specific" answer if you will.
I've been given the proposal of producing an SD project but utilising HD footage; which I know is possible!
But the guy who is handing over the job is insisting we can take advantage of the HD footage within the SD project as it'll be larger than our PAL SD "canvas" [which I know is true], which means we can [and I quote] "zoom in and retain detail".
I'm really not so sure this is possible!? As I was under the impression that any HD footage brought into an SD project would be automatically resized to fit the project dimensions!
Could anybody kindly point me in the right direction? And to be honest I'd rather we have the piece shot as we intend it to look [or as close as] in the final edit, ie. cut aways, close-ups, wides, etc., rather than relying on a probable myth of the above!
    Many thanks in advance.
    Regards, Mark.
      Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hi there Jerry,
Many thanks for the reply and the warm welcome -- I've been lurking around these parts for months now, but it's my first post!
Well, I'll be honest and admit to being shocked -- don't you hate when you're wrong?!
I was absolutely certain that importing HD into SD would simply be re-sized to the SD dimensions! Oh well...
But [and as you rightly said] I would rather see the material shot correctly for "correct use" in the first place rather than relying on the fact that we could possibly zoom-in [which is often an unatural move in interview situations].
I need to convince the "guy" [as we shall now call him] of the need to storyboard and script [of which they will be rather than vox-pops] the end use of the interviews.
Another day, another dollar... Or pound sterling in my case!!
    Many thanks once again.
    Regards, Mark.

  • Using iCloud as AIM Account

I am trying to login to AIM.com with my iCloud information.  I remember this always working when people had .Mac.  I never had it and started from iCloud directly, but every time I try to login to AIM or even from an old Mac running OS 9 and an AIM app, they keep rejecting the password and won't accept it.  I know my password is correct as I can login to icloud.com, but AIM services keep saying bad password.
I tried even changing my password at appleid.apple.com but that didn't fix it at all, except make a headache (as now I can't go back to the password I wanted to use).
    Am I missing something?

    Hi All,
There have been several "Apple" IDs over the years (Names issued by Apple)
iCloud issued @me.com names are different to MobileMe issued @me.com name and @mac.com names
All ARE Valid AIM Screen Names.
However iChat 6 and Messages Beta both login to me.com as well as AIM.
This fact allows AIM to verify the password when the name is used in iChat 6 and Messages beta.
iChat 2 through 5 do not do this dual Login so the Password cannot be verified by AIM and so the iCloud issued names do not work in iChat 5 or Earlier.
If you have an @mac.com or MobileMe issued @me.com then you can go here (AIM Settings) and create Display Names, adjust Off Line IMs setting and other things.
You cannot do this with the new iCloud issued name due to the lack of the dual login.
If you are using such a name (iCloud) in iChat 6 (or Messages beta) you still need to keep the password to 16 characters or Less for the AIM servers limit.
Use the AIM settings link and follow the "Get Username" Name link top right or use
The @mac.com registration page to create new names for iChat 5 or earlier.

  • Are there any advantages to using a Data Value Reference for LabVIEW Classes?

    Hi
I recently came across an example where the developer had used a data value reference for the class cluster in LabVIEW.
What are the advantages of doing this?
Doesn't the use of LV objects already avoid the creation of multiple copies of data thereby reducting memory usage?
    Thanks

  • What are the advantages of using Mac OS X over Windows 7?

    Thank you.

I just would like to know what makes a windows 7's user willing to switch to Mac OS.
Everything we say that Mac OS X does better will sound like fanboy hollow self serving praise of Mac OS X, because based on the written description you will be thinking to yourself that Windows can do that.  And a description that is very detailed will bore you (and everyone else) to sleep.
You really need to spend time playing with Mac OS X.  If there is an Apple Store near you, go in, and spend several hours playing with one (or several) Macs over several days/weekends.  As long as the store is not too crowded the store staff will let you play as long as you like.  They will help you play or go away if you ask nicely.  I've spent hours in a Apple Stores, sometimes just playing, surfing, comparing, and sometimes talking to the staff when one wonders over and asks if they can help me.
As to why some people switch.  Sometimes it is frustration with Windows.  Sometimes it is the bloatware installed on the systems by the manufactures that the users do not know how to get rid of.  Sometimes it is the basic App Suite, such as iMovie, iPhoto, GarageBand, etc... (iMovie really does make it very easy to generate family home movies).  Sometimes it is running away from the constant Malware and paying over and over again for an anti-virus package (although I'm told the stuff shipped with Windows these days is pretty good).  Sometimes it is because a family member forced it on them (Mac using kids that are frustrated trying to support Mom and Dad; Mom being 300 miles away can be a bummer with the system is out of service).  Sometimes they get a iPod/iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch and see how nicely it works, and start to wonder if maybe other Apple produces are this well made (iPod/iPhone/iPad/iPod Touchs are a gateway drug).
There are as many reasons for why people switch as there are people that have switched.
If you wish to find out if you have a reason, you really need to play with the Mac for an extended period of time and see if it suits you.  If it doesn't and you still feel like you need a change of pace, try a Linux distribution (Ubuntu for example).

  • Encoding music video for Youtube - any advantage of using Pro (AME) over Elements?

I am in the process of encoding some music videos for youtube.  I'm currently using Steve Grisetti's suggested settings from mid-2011 here:  http://forums.adobe.com/thread/623549
What I'm wondering is if the Adobe Media Encoder provided with Premiere Pro (or another such program with more features than the Premiere Elements 7 encoder) would provide better results?   For example, I noticed those programs have options such as 256kbps audio, 2-pass, and Variable Bit Rate (which PE7 doesn't seem to have).  Would that provide better quality?  Of course, I need the very best audio possible.
Also, I've read from various other people's suggestions, that FLV is a better export choice than h264 since less recoding by Youtube is done- any truth to that?
Lastly, would exporting to 1080 instead of 720 (and therefore giving youtube users the option of choosing either 1080 or 720) be better for the long term, or is there any reason why 720 is suggested?
My videos are short and were edited from DVD vob files.  I've very new to encoding so really appreciate the suggestions!
    Thanks!

I doubt that even a discerning ear to tell the original source Audio, after YouTube gets through Transcoding it for display. Also, viewers will be listening through their computer's speakers, and not a full home theater setup, where the Bit-Rate might make a slight difference. Also, most folk today, think that MP3's through ear-buds are "high fidelity."
The only plus for using AME is that once you have queued the Project up, you can do other things, while it is processing the file.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Thinking about using Mac Mini's as desktops for 20 employee business.  Pro's Vs. Con's

Thinking about using Mac Mini's as desktops for 20 employee business.  Pro's Vs. Con's

Your best bet would be to buy a single 2012 MacMini Server model that you can use to manage the balance of the other machines. Either that or upgrade one of the MM's to OS X Yosemite Server . You can find information about the Server edition at:
    https://www.apple.com/osx/server/
However I would STRONGLY recommend visiting your local Apple Store and ask to speak to their business specialist, they are trained to manage customer needs such as yours.
The major advantage of using Macs over any PC is the stability of OS X itself and the overall quality of support that you will never get with HP.

  • Any advantage to dojng an A & I with retail Leopard vs. Upgrade Leopard?

My Intel iMac came installed w/ Tiger and a "CPU Drop-In" DVD of Leopard. I need to do an Archive and Install to see if I can fix a hanging Finder. I previously bought a retail copy of Leopard for my G5, which I understand will install on either PPC or an Intel machine. Is there any advantage to using the retail version on my Intel iMac? I've read that the CPU Drop-In Leopard is not a complete version of Leopard, which doesn't make sense to me.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

    a brody,
Thanks for posting and your offer to advise.
As for a backup, I have most of my data still on the G5. I've already done an A&I on the Intel iMac once witch did not fix the Finder issue. In getting ready to give an A&I another go, I backed up my Intel last night to an Ext. HD using CCC. There are three users on the machine. The other two users are not experiencing the Finder issue.
Background on why I did an A&I in the first place: ran my newly acquired updated version of DiskWarrior on the Intel iMac. Turns out this version can build the directory but can not fix permissions because it's based on Tiger. I did not know this (wrongly assumed DW was entirely compatible with Leopard).
DW tech suggested I do an A&I which did not fix the problem. An Apple tech yesterday suggested that since the Finder is only hanging on my (admin) desktop, that I create a new admin account and drag over my files either by using target Mode with G5 or getting them from the Ext. HD. However, I thought that maybe if I do another A&I, it might fix the problem. I'm also concerned that even though the other users on the Intel do not have the hanging Finder, that the previous ?A&I might not have corrected all the corrupted permissions.
BTW, initially the Apple tech guy suggested that I do a complete Erase and Install, but in thinking further on it, thought just creating another admin account would be sufficient.
    What do you think?
