Any Advice on Indesign CS4?

I am just learning to use indesign CS4. Any adivce on potential problems with the software. We are in page set up at this point and everything seems to be going well to me. I really like this program and look forward to learning more about it. Can anyone give me examples of daily usage of this program?

  • Saving InDesign CS4 files for InDesign CS2

    I'm about to upgrade from CS3 to CS4 but have a client who needs to open documents I create InDesign CS2. I've been saving files for this clients in CS3's interchange (.inx) format, which has worked fine. But CS4 .inx files will only open in CS3. One work around I found was on TUAW (http://www.tuaw.com/2009/05/08/tuaw-tip-saving-indesign-cs4-files-for-indesign-cs2/), which suggests opening the .inx file in a text editor and changing the version number. The resulting file should then open in CS4. I was wondering if anyone has tried this (with or without success) or has any advice on saving CS4 docs for CS2? Thanks very much!

    I'll go with option 3 since I no longer have CS2 on my machine and my
    client won't be upgrading anytime soon. Thanks for the help and great
    advice.
    I'd never use this workflow if I couldn't test it on CS2 before sending it off to the client. Don't know what to tell you here... good luck?
    Me, harsh? Is that my rep?
    Oh, come on. I can say it another way:
    "Peter's going to be way too nice about this... DON'T DO IT."

  • InDesign CS4 to reinstall after a system crash. I have bought CS4 some years ago in order to update InDesign CS2. Of course, I have my S/N for CS4 but, during the reinstallation process, I have to give the S/N of InDesign CS2 wich is lost !

    I'm unable to reinstall InDesign CS4 which was bought as an update of an old InDesign CS2. I have the serial number of CS4 but I have lost the S/N of CS2 which is required.
    Thanks for help.

    Hi,
    Thanks a lot for your answer. In fact, I’ve really registered CS2 in 2002 (october 14th). But I guess that, at this time, my email address was [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> which is no more presently usable.
    So, when the installation program of CS4 requires the S/N of CS2 (because my CS4 was an update of a preceding CS2, I’ve an answer (1037-0225-5711-8675-6584-4525) but this answer is not considered as correct by the program.
    I guess this change of mail adress is the reason why I don’t find, on my personal file on Adobe, any information about Indesign CS4 (S/N : 1037-0005-3808-1893-0944-6511) nor PhotoShop CS5 (S/N : 1330-0000-7535-1483-5980-1567).
    Thanks

  • Frustration has finally set in!!!!!!! Any advice welcome. – Indesign CS4

    Hey Everyone,
    I must premise this discussion with the fact that I have been using Quark Xpress since version 3. I now own version 8 and have used version in between.  Many moons ago, I ventured into Indesign v.1 and then v.2.  I found the performance to be seriously lacking and frustrating and very quickly went back to Quark.  Even though I had purchase CS1 and CS3 I chose (based on my first experiences) to not use Indesign and still spent the upgrade fees for Quark Xpress.
    I now find myself in a position where my client wants the file to be built in Indesign.  So, I am forced to work with it.  I am running CS4 at the moment and when this client is finished I can't wait to get back to the speed and performance of a quality program.
    My beliefs are that Indesign only has a hold on the market because Adobe offers the product for FREE essentially when you purchase CS packages.  If they were to sell the program by itself, then it would fail.  General consumers who haven't experienced the superior performance of Quark Xpress don't know what they are missing.  Hey, if I was just starting out and didn't know the difference I would be in the same boat.  However, I am not in that boat.  I know that there are other boats out there.  And Quark is the power boat versus the Indesign dinghy.
    Now that I have said my rant, and I am not sure if any avid Indesign users will still be reading, if there is a way to improve the performance of Indesign CS4 I am all ears (err... eyes).  Currently running a Dual 2.0 GHz G5 with 8 GB RAM.  I know if the display performance thing... however that is a crock. Indesign is supposed to be a page layout program.  If you can't see what you are laying out what is the point!
    I am ready to start a SAVE Quark Xpress drive.  Take it to the streets!  Hold rallies!  Get t-shirts made!  News articles!  The works!  I am beyond frustrated with this inferior product!
    So, as mentioned in my subject line.  Anyone who as any advice on enhancing the performance of Indesign CS4 I am all eyes!

    I'm not familiar with CS4 InDesign, but I'd look at some of the somewhat obvious things like assigning a scratch disk ( if possible ) and disabling .pdf compatability or similar to Illustrator's saving 2 files, one .ai; one .pdf ( if possible ).  I recently took a course on CS3 InDesign where the preview could be set to an option that would speed up performance ( similar to your reference in your post ).  Performance may also be affected by how many apps you have open when working in InDesign.  Other things to look at are defragging your HD, cleaning house using something like Mac Janitor; and correcting permissions, etc., etc.  Glad to hear someone is still using QuarkXPress.

    No, but it may help the chances of a successful installation.

    You can try it like this. (Tested on Mac OSX)
    // export indesign doc to idml
    // tested on Mac OSX
    // this code is Public Domain
    // check if the doc is saved
    var doc = app.activeDocument;
    if (!doc.saved) {
      doc.save();// if not save it
    // take the .indd's name and make a .idml from it
    var aName = doc.name;// get the name
    var newName = aName.replace("indd", "idml");// replace the indd to idml
    // crate a new FIle Object
    var theFile = File(File(doc.filePath).fsName + "/" + newName);
    // export
    doc.exportFile(ExportFormat.INDESIGN_MARKUP, theFile, false);

  • I'm having difficulty with Thai text in InDesign CC. Any advice please?

    I'm informed by Thai speakers that the text is split into 4 lines, each character can have up to 4 elements stacked on top of one another.  In InDesign documents the top line won't display correctly, it seems to merge with the mid line.  I've tried changing the spacing etc but can't correct the problem.  Any advice on this would be appreciated.

    Thanks so much Ellis home - this worked and has saved me a lot of hassle!

    Suddenly inDesign CS4 will no longer open anything. When I attempt to open inDesign files it says "import failed". I have trashed my preferences and tried checking "show import options" to no avail. I can create a new document but not open documents. I am on a 2007 iMac running Lion. Any ideas?

    Maybe. Trash your prefs again using the directions at Replace Your Preferences and then delete the additional files joun listed at Adobe Forums: InDesign crashes at startup

  • I can't access any of my InDesign files

    Hi there,
    This morning I turned on my work computer only to discover I couldn't access any of my Indesign, photoshop or illustrator files, despite the fact that some of the files were saved on both the computer and an external hard drive. There's now 100's of files I now can't access and I'm starting to freak out as my IT dept said they didn't know why.
    The files would appear as white thumbnails and when I clicked on them the following message would appear:
    Adobe Indesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or the file may be open in another application.
    I'd been using the same version of Indesign all along (CS4) so it's not as if I've recently updated and now can't open the files. I also tried opening the files up on another computer but no luck. This just seemed to happen overnight and no one has any answers. If anyone has experienced anything similar with so many files, I'd really appreciate your advice and I'd also like to understand the cause of the problem so something like this doesn't happen again.
    Thank you in advance.
    Clare

    First, I suspect there's a pretty good chance the files are OK and that the damage, whatever it is, is at the program level, and was done to your whole network. Do you have another system not connected to your network, at home perhaps, where you could try opening some of these files?
    I hesitate to ask the obvious (as I say, I'm hardly in a position to second guess these guys) but if these are Windows systems, have they tried a system restore to a few days ago, or a restore from a backup image for either a Windows or a Mac system?

  • InDesign CS4 - Index no longer lists entries

    First off, it's been a while since I've posted here! I feel all giddy =)
    Second, thanks for taking time to look at this one....
    I'm on XP using InDesign CS4. We've created and updated many book files over the years starting with CS1 and have not run into this situation before. I'm hoping someone out there can help shed some light as to why, if not a fix. This particular project is a chapter based book file that was originally made several years earlier using InDesign CS1. There are 11 chapters, plus Table of Contents, Index, and technical matter up front. Since the original production, information has changed so we have set out to make an update.
    Updates included:
    - Figure edits/addition (all externally linked to .AI files)
    - Layout changes (i.e., page shifts due to additional graphics, some text content added, some removed, but nothing heavy)
    - Conversion from CS1 to CS4
    - Chapter Title updates (we are not using any scripts that name internal content based on file name)
    - Chapter sequence has changed so that old Chapter 5 is now new Chapter 1 and all following chapters shifted up by one. This literally changed all file names of the individual InD chapter files used to comprise the book document.
    OK!
    Old Chapter 5 is now new Chapter 1 and required reinsertion into the book document. This was the same for most of the other chapters as well. Upon all updates, the page numbering, sequences, etc., all checked out. I updated the ToC withgout issue. I then attempted to update the Index. This is when I noticed that the "Update Index" option was greyed out (Windows/Type & Tables/Index Shift+F8). Odd, but Ok, so I tried to generate a new index. No luck there either as it only created a empty text field with the title "Index" but with no entries. I then checked the Index Preview list and noticed that all but perhaps 5% of my entries were missing.
    So this is where I am. Yes, content was edited, but not to the extent that would have deleted so many indexed entries throughout the book. Has anyone had experience with index errors during conversion from CS1 to a newer version? Or perhaps by renaming and reinserting chapter files into the master book document? I always assumed that the Index entries were held within the chapter file they were created in, until running the book-based Index generation. Perhaps I'm wrong. Could renaming/reimporting chapters have wiped my entries?
    I do have the old Index.ind file with all old entries as well as several prints for reference should I need to comb the ENTIRE book replacing each Index entry. I hope that is not my only option! I hope hoping that one of you might offer some sound advice that I'm overlooking here before I head down that road. Please help me, Obi-won. You're my only hope. Any takers?
    Thanks in advance for any suggestions. It's much appreciated!

    Please forgive my weird sense of humor, but, it looks like you've found a perfect way to delete 95% of your index markers in a book.
    Seriously, I'm not certain how this could happen, but I do have a couple of ideas on how to troubleshoot that I learned from some years as a trainer and tech-support guy.
    * Go back to the beginning of your process. Open a copy of an old file in CS1, if you still have it, and if it runs on a workstation that's compatible with it. Generate an index; the original index markers should work. If you don't have CS1, open a copy in whatever release you used to convert your old files, and generate an index. Compare the two indexes, if you have been able to make one for the file with CS1. If no CS1, compare the index entries in the newer version's index with the complete CS1 index. If any original-index entries from the test file aren't present in the newer-version index, here's where things went bad. If nothing's lost, this likely isn't the trouble spot.
    What could go bad here? The obvious suspect is the conversion from CS1 to CS4. I can't remember how CS1 worked. If it had an export-to-inx, and you opened that inx file in CS4, and the CS4 file is missing index markers, try opening a copy of the CS1 file directly in CS4. Or, if you opened the CS1 file directly in CS4 and lost index markers, try exporting from CS1 to inx and opening that file. If both methods lose index markers, then this is the problem spot; perhaps someone has a suggestion to fix this problem.
    * If the file conversion doesn't lose index markers, then the book feature is the next place to look. Create a new book in CS4 and add the files in the old order and generate an index. Compare it to the original. No loss, then push it harder, and rearrange the order of documents in the book, and regenerate the index. If this fails, generate a brand-new index. If both index generation approaches fail, then you've found the problem. Perhaps someone can suggest a fix.
    * If all's OK so far, try more stuff, like rearranging chapter files, generating the index.
    * If rearranging files works, test each succeeding step in the process until you find the failure.
    * If you can't find a fix for the problem you uncover as the cause, one possible help in re-marking content for a new CS4 index would be to export the original book file set from CS1 to PDF with index entries set to create hyperlinks. Then work through that PDF index by clicking the page references to find their sources, and create new markers in the new files.

  • InDesign CS4 Splitting colors from EPS file

    I have CS4 and use illustrator to create logos, which I convert to eps files and place in InDesign.  When I place the eps file into InDesign, sometimes, it splits the color of the EPS file down the middle and creates a light side and a dark side.  Sometimes, this prints ok and other times, it prints with the split colors (light/dark).  I have tried re-creating the logo file, recreating the inDesign file and nothing works. There is nothing showing behind the logo box in the InDesign file.  I even had someone else convert the logo in CS5 and the same think happened.  Does anyone have a clue as to what might be going on here?  Any advice would be helpful.

    1Karina wrote:
    I am not sure I know what you mean. But eps does not work in InDesign, SRiegel is right, make it an ai file. Do you know you can copy the illustrator file and place it in InDesign? Or you can check the colours in the seperation box. Maybe you can see what is happening.
    Actually, SOME .eps files can be problematic, but there's no blanket reason not to try them if you already have them. For new work, or for files that show a problem, saving as .ai or PDF is the way to go.

  • Missing € character when exporting from Indesign (CS4) to PDF

    I think the subject line says it all. I'm not an expert user, but have not previously had
    this problem. I get a new iMac with CS4 reinstalled
    and now 'lose' the Euro character when I export my Indesign files to
    PDF - does anyone have any advice please? Thanks.

    Even so - I don't know why - but the problem is with some fonts that the Euro doesn't show.
    I always use the Euro font for the Euro symbol and never have an issue.
    Even if you do manage to get the Helvetica Euro to show up in the PDF there is a chance it can drop out at the RIP stage and not appear in print - I've seen it happen far too many times.
    Euro font is your friend.

  • InDesign CS4: Missing Toolbars and Missing Plug-In

    Currently running InDesign CS4, version 6.0 on a Macbook Pro.
    I was just using the program last night with no issues. Upon opening InDesign today, Adobe Updater popped up at launch; I installed updates. Now when I open a new document in InDesign, there are no toolbars on the side of my screen. (I've tried using the tab key shortcut, but nothing happens.)
    Also, when I try to open previously saved InDesign files from my computer, I get the following pop-up:
    Missing Plug-ins
    LILO.APLN
    The document "filename" uses one or more plug-ins which are not currently available on your system. Do you want to open anyway?
    And then this pop-up:
    Hyphenation breaks may change if you edit the text in this document.
    The following hyphenation services are not installed on this system - Proximity (English: USA)
    I don't know what either of these messages mean. I'm not incredibly tech-saavy, so any advice would be EXTREMELY appreciated.

    Uninstalled the Creative Suite. Ran the cleanup tool. Reinstalled the suite from the installation discs.
    Upon opening InDesign, I got these two messages:
    LILO.APLN
    The document "filename" uses one or more plug-ins which are not currently available on your system. Do you want to open anyway?
    And then:
    Hyphenation breaks may change if you edit the text in this document.
    The following hyphenation services are not installed on this system - Proximity (English: USA)
    Also, toolbars are gone again.
