Any advice on moving from iPad 3 (WiFi) to iPad 4 (WiFi+Cellular)

My new iPad is on it's way and I want to make sure that all of the content I have on my current iPad will move over to my new iPad.
I just synced and backed up using iTunes 11 on my MacBook Pro running 10.8.2.  So will I just have to restore from that backup to my new iPad?
What about podcasts that I have in Instacast?  I have about 5 GB of unlistened to podcasts that I want to make sure move over without problem.
Both iPads are 64 GB models, so I'm not moving from / to a different size device.
I'm moving to the cellular model because where I work they block personal hotspots and do not have WiFi throughout the building.
My current iPad runs iOS 6.0.1.  Should I ensure the new one is also running that version before doing the restore?
Anything else I should watch out for?
Thanks in advance for any and all help.

It will not let you restore if the new 4th generation iPad has an older version of iOS than the one you wish to restore from. However, it should already come with the latest version. I would recommend using iCloud for your backups. You can read more here:

  • Advice needed: Moving from mac to pc - pc specs.

    Hi all,
This is my first post. I have been using FCP on a mac for a few years now but its time for me to upgrade. I want to upgrade to 64bit, and also move away from FCP. I have decided that premier would be best for me, and am trying to figure out what is the best/most suitable pc I can get for my budget.
I am considering the following Hp Pavilion pc.  I've always used mac but can't afford a new one, and feel a little out of my depth when it comes to pcs. Any advice/reccomendations would be appreciated. The specs for the Hp Pavilion are below.

Hi, Thank you for your response.
I am actually based in the UK (might be on the wrong forum?) - but I had a look at a custom built site here.
The following are specs that I can afford. I could go a little higher too. Do you think these are suitable? If not what should I change?
Thank you very much in advance. (The case is InWin Centinal Buc Black Gaming Case.)

  • I can't send SMS text from iPad 4 w/ cellular, no option to add or turn off/on

I can no longer send SMS text with IPad 4 w/ cellular. There is no option in settings-messages to turn on SMS like on iphone5. Everything is trying to be sent iMessage which fails when sending text to non apple users. This change occurred after last iOS update.

I can confirm this for the Ipad Mini with iOS6.1
Although the cellular hardware is available - the iPad doesn't handle SMS Text messages.
For those trying to use prepaid 3G internet data simcards, not being able to send or receive text messages pretty much cripples most 3G prepaid internet simcard packages available around the world.

  • Is there any way to print from iPad without having wireless network?

My mom is getting an iPad 64GB Wi-Fi + 3G to be able to surf the internet easily since the only service available to her at her house is dial-up. She would like to be able to print from her iPad. It seems from my research that all the printers require connection to a wi-fi network to use airprint. Does anyone know of an easy way for her to print? Also, she doesn't have a computer available to her right now as it recently died. Does anyone know of a solution?

Well, without a wireless network she can't surf the 'net!
Yes, printers require connection to a WiFi network AND they must be AirPrint compliant.

  • Advice on moving from workgroup to domain for very small network

    Hello all,
I work for a small company and inherited the part time IT/Operations position and I want to understand the impact of changing from workgroup to domain.  I understand the process and I have set up small test domains before but I want to be certain I
understand this so I figured I better ask the pros.
    The setup:
1 Desktop class system, recent i5 quad, 16GB RAM, 1TB HD with Server 2008 R2.  Current roles are File Sharing and WSUS.
3 Desktops running Win 7 Home
1 Desktop with win 7 Pro
    1 Laptop with Vista Home
    1 Laptop with Win 7
1 Laptop with Win 8 Pro
I have configured all devices to uses the WSUS for updates as they wanted these managed and this seems to be the easiest way.
Right now all users have an account on the server that is used to map to their shares.  I know that the home versions cannot join to a domain and with this small of a network I don't want to join any device to a domain as we have only one server and
it would not be reasonable to add more servers.
The thing is they want to setup local sharing of calendars and contacts, etc.  I have 2010 exchange server and it is required to be on a domain.
    The Questions:
Can the domain still "act" as a workgroup and users still connect to the shares and exchange without being joined to the domain?  What is the impact on performance for this server?  Will the home version users still be able to connect to
the shares (I assume yes) and to the exchange through outlook?  Is there a better way to achieve the workgroup features of exchange without using exchange and not subscribing to Office 365?  We do not have an internet domain name for this business.
Does this matter for setting up a domain?
Anything you can think of that I should consider please feel free.
Thank you all for your advice.

    Hi Paul,
You are very welcome, I am very glad that my suggestions helped.
For your first question, in a domain, the Domain Controller clearly has much more tasks to perform than a work group server, while it also has more management options for an administrator to better control his/her client machines.
In addition, domain acts as a central management solution will reduce the work of the administrator. For an example, under workgroup mode, if we have multiple servers which have shared resources, we need to create the same user
accounts on each of them, while in a domain, we only need to create accounts once on the DC, then all the accounts can be recognized across the whole domain, no matter how many servers and client machines are within it.
For the second question, yes, single lable domain name is not recommended, but it is allowed. Single lable domains are supported in
Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Exchange 2010, while single label DNS name resolution is also possible.
However, there are other Microsoft and third-party products which don’t support
single lable domains. My suggestion is don’t use it while it will cause you trouble.

  • Please, any advice on moving to Air?

    Hello everyone!
I am a new Apple customer. I recently bought an iPad 2 and suddenly I discovered the Apple world.
Now, I was thinking about the possibility of switching from my notebook Acer 15" (T4400 2.2 GHz, 3 GB RAM) to a Macbook Air 11" or 13".
I would like to ask for a suggestion from this Forum.
I usually spend 8 hours a day publishing articles on a Joomla site (cutting texts, copying, formatting, modifying...). While I am at home/office I use my desktop but while I am abroad I need to take with me only my notebook. I spent almost 6 months per year abroad, working on my notebook.
I loved the form factor of that Macbook Air and the idea of having a SSD and an iOS, but my question is about usability in my work.
Not to forget I wear glasses.
I found my Acer 15" display (1366 x 768 pixels) good enough for me, and I was wondering if Air 11" or 13" are TOO small to work with or not.
    Any suggestions? Thanks!

I'm a writer and I write for many long hours every day on my 11" (and I wear contacts). Which is to say, the size of the 11" won't prevent you from doing all the work you want to do on its full-sized keyboard.
However, I got an 11" because I like to write all over the place, meaning I sometime walk for long stretches with that laptop getting it to the library or coffeehouse I'm going to that day, or I might want to balance it on my knee while I rest on the couch. So, the lighter the better, and given that I might have lunch or books cluttering up the tiny table at the café where I'm writing, the less space my computer takes up, the better as well. This is not to say that the 13" is a heavy-weight or that big, it's just not as small and light as the 11". I love the fact that I'm carrying around a computer that isn't much bigger than a notebook.
If, however, my tendency was to write at a desk and that is where the laptop would be most of the time, I'd probably have gone for the 13". And I suspect that you'd probably be happier with that size as well. However, as you are now part of the Apple World, we'll tell you the ultra-secret-secret to picking out an Apple computer (all other factors like cost and needs being equal): Go to a store, put the two side by side, play on both and go with the one you fall in love with
If you love the computer, you'll be happy on it. As for the screen size, I think most people would agree that the 11" can certainly seem too small to some, but the 13" probably won't. These computers have a real crispness to their screens that makes things pop and should compensate the inches you'll be sacrificing. Also, the battery life on both is terrific. So check 'em out and see which one says it's yours. That's the one to get.

  • Import error moving from iPad to iPhoto

Somewhat puzzled by the inability to import photos from my iPad to iPhoto.
    Here's what happened:
    1. Used camera connector to transfer high-def JPG format files from a Nikon D50 onto the iPad (no problem, and the *iPad displays the pictures* perfectly).
    2. Attach iPad to Mac and start iPhoto.
    3. iPad is shown as attached and import window is displayed, correctly showing 176 photos to be imported but *no images are displayed*, only the dotted outline boxes.
    4. Attempt 'Import All...' and an *import error is shown listing all 176 JPG files* as not imported.
    5. Start Image Capture utility and attempt 'Import All', same error is reported.
    6. Attempt selecting just one photo and importing just selected item (fails in both iPhoto and Image Capture with the same import error).
It looks like the iPad can read the JPG files but for some reason the Mac cannot.
    Setup details:
    iPhoto '08 v7.1.5
Macbook Pro running OS X 10.6.2
    iPad running iOS v3.2
    Image Capture v6.0.1
    Any ideas?
    Regards,
    Mark

Updated to OS X 10.6.4 and everything seems to work correctly.

  • Apps moving from iPad to iPhone

I got a new iPad and downloaded some apps. Later I picked up my iPhone and saw the iPad apps "waiting", as if they are going to download to my phone. Why and how did that happen and how do I prevent it?  I deleted the little boxes from my phone...

    Probably related to Automatic Downloads...
See here for Turning it On and/or Off...

  • We forgot our remote. Any way to activate from iPad or iPhone.

Can we connect our iPad without the remote?

To print directly you have to use an AirPrint enabled printer, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4356 or send the material to a computer and print from the computer.

  • Need some help with exporting. Any advice welcome.

    Hey everyone,
I shoot and edit mostly wedding videos using my Panasonic HMC40 HD camera, and shoot in 720p. I am looking for any advice that you have learned yourself, or maybe see something I am doing completly wrong, and let me know.
Here we go: My normal workflow is to shoot my footage, and then use the "Log and Transfer" option in FCP7. Once it has completed, I start the editing process, by cutting, adding effects, slowing things down to about 50%, and adding some black and white. (simple stuff). Most of my timelines for these videos turn out to be around 20 minutes. Once everything is completed, I choose, "Export, to Quicktime Movie"
    Here are my current settings:
Once I proceed to export, this is where my problem comes in.
for a 20 min video, it is taking roughly 2-3 hours for export to a .mov file. Seems pretty unacceptable to me... (maybe this is normal though?...)
I am currently using a MacBook Pro, and here are my computer specs:
Please bring ALL and ANY advice, I switched from PC a while back, and am having a hard time figuring everything out on my own, so I hope someone can help!
Thanks for not beating me up too bad, if im doing some noob errors.

    So now im really confused...
I did exactally what you said, and it switched to the following settings:
And it seems to be acting about the same:
Could it be because I have a "Apple Motion" file in there? (I know that clip happens to be 29.97)

  • I am hoping to buy a 3G iphone at the ernd of the week any advice

    Hi,
Hopefully I will be able to get hold of 16Gb 3G iphone at the end of the week as I was working all last week and weekend.
I eventually upgraded to 2.0 firmware and really like it on on my 2 iphones so upgrading the handset would be the next step.
Does anyone who has had a 2G iphone and upgraded to 3G model have any advice on this.

From iMovie's menu, click on Edit > Select > Photos. All photos in the timeline will now be highlighted with a yellow border. Double-click on one of the photos to open the Inspector. In the Inspector change the duration to your desired time of 5 seconds. Now all the photos will have a duration of 5 seconds.

When accessing Hotmail account on Apple Air ,any  page when fully loaded just goes to a white screen, so no actions can be completed. Account is fine on Imac just Air functionality faulty, any advice
    thanks Bryce from OZ

a flashing folder with a question mark popped up,
Can mean that your Mac can't find a system folder to boot from.
Try restarting while holding down the Option key. That should prompt the Startup Manager window where you can select the startup disk and restart.
Startup Manager: How to select a startup volume
If the disk is not available, then it's failing or has failed.
If you did not backup your important files, an alternative would be data recovery but it's expensive.

  • Downloaded games from suppliers to iPad - these are now downlighting to iTunes on my m/s computer and taking hours and hours to do so.  If I delete them from iTunes will this affect the games now on my iPad?  Any advice would be appreciated.

Games downloaded direct to iPad.   They are now auto downloading to iTunes on M/s PC and taking hours to do so.  If I delete those partially downloaded to PC will it affect those on iPad when I next sync iPad with PC?
    Any advice appreciated - thanks.
    Reflo

To start things off, I like to manually manage my media and will insturct you to do the same. To enable doing this, you check off the box for it on your phone's summary on iTunes. Now tranferring media is as easy as dragging and dropping.
    (1) To get songs from your phone onto your iTunes, you open up your phone's dropdown menu on the iTunes sidebar and click Music. You can be able to drag music file into your Music folder in the Library section of iTunes. You can also just right click your phone's name and click "Transfer Purchases" if you want to move everything new on your iPhone onto your computer's library.
    (2) You open your Music library on your computer and simply drag highlighted songs onto your phone's name on the sidebar. When in album grid view or cover flow, you can click and drag a whole album right on. The downside of manual management is that you can easily accidentally add doubles of songs onto your phone. Of course, if you notice this on your phone, you can just swipe to the right across the song's name and you should have a nice little delete button so you can remove extras anywhere.
    (3) I heard about this online and it actually is buried in the Terms and Conditions somewhere. I don't think this rule will apply if you are exchanging the music over your iTunes account devices. I think this applies to buring the iTunes material to CDs. I think these speacial media file can somehow detect what they are moved or copied onto and keep a statistic buried in their coding. This is more of a logical assumption than a fact, but what else could these terms possibly mean? If you want to know more about this, Bruce Willis was having a big arguement about this online because he wanted to give his medie to his children. You can probably find an article about this using those search terms.
I worked hard on this response and would appreciate if you marked it correct if it served as any help to you. Thank you in advance.

  • I have an iPad 2 and receive e-mail through internet connection. When I delete e-mails, and clear my Trash folder, they re-appear. Setting are for remove from server when moved from Inbox. Any idea what I can do to actually delete them?

I have an iPad 2 and receive e-mail through regular internet connection. Lately, when I delete e-mails, and clear my Trash folder, they re-appear, downloaded anew from the server and marked as unread. My e-mail Advanced Settings are selected for "Remove from server when moved from Inbox." Even when I access the e-mail accountfrom my desktop and delete the e-mails, the re-appear on my iPad. Does anyone have any idea what is causing this and what I can do to actually delete them?

Sounds like you are looking in the wrong Administrative Group container which is why you are seeing your Exchange 2010 servers in there.
When you install Exchange 2003 only you will see a container named by default as "CN=First Administrative Group" container. But this could be named anything if you changed the Organization Name on the installation when you installed the first
Exchange 2003 server into the domain/forest.
You will notice that when you install Exchange 2010 part of the AD setup is to create a new configuration container and is named by default "CN=First Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT)".
So it sounds like you are not looking in the right location within ADSIEdit.
You may find the following article also helpful for this issue which is the same resolution:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/sbs/archive/2012/05/17/empty-cn-servers-container-causing-issues-with-public-folders-on-small-business-server-2011.aspx
I recommend though that you ensure your Exchange 2003 servers are fully uninstalled or no longer present in your environment before you go deleting the Servers container though.. The following Microsoft article will help with this:
