Any advice on software to find/eliminate duplicate files (SL compatible)?

Hi, I have 3 computers and files all over the place, including many duplicates. Can anyone suggest a good, reliable SL compatible software that allows me to compare and delete duplicate files,
Thank you for your suggestions,

I used TidyUp to clean up the mess in my wife's Pictures folder. It did a pretty good job.

  • Apple script to find all duplicate files

Is it possible to write an applescript to find all duplicate file names on my hard drive? My hd is almost full, and if I can delete duplicate files, it'll save me from having to buy another external drive.
    Thanks,
    George

Why would you have found 20GB of duplicate images?  iPhoto has built-in duplicate detection, it can remove any duplicates or prevent them from being imported altogether.  Did you disable this in iPhoto for some reason?  Or were you still using folders and subfolders to store your photos?
Just because two pictures have the exact same filename does NOT mean they are identical.  If this application you used simply compared their filenames, it's possible you actually lost all those photos and not just some duplicates.  ;(  Because many cameras reuse filenames after a certain point!

Is There a Way to search your Hard Drive find duplicate files?

PaulScheer, Welcome to the discussion area!
Be careful with this... there are some files in system level directories that have the same name as files in your user directory. Although the names are the same they are not the same file. For example the contents of /Library and /Users/username/Library may look similar but they aren't duplicate files.

  • To Eliminate duplicate files

    Hi.  I'm new here...
I've foolishly created too many duplicates of many, many files.  I need to eliminate unwanted files, both from the catalog and from my hard drive.  What's the most efficient way to do this?

I have another pet gripe with both E5 and E6..no lens model info reported in the exif, (i.e.. 28-75 f2.8 or 100-300Apo or DT18-200 or 24-105 etc.) I have both versions of Elements and I bought E6 thinking it might have been fixed...but no, it was not to be.
While PSE has numerous bugs in its handling of metadata, this may not be a bug.  The camera manufacturer may not be recording the lens information in the industry-standard metadata fields, only in the proprietary MakerNotes fields.   You can check this by getting the free Exiftool or ExiftoolGUI to see where the lens information is being stored.  If it's in EXIF or XMP fields, then PSE should be able to display it; otherwise, if it's in the MakerNotes, PSE won't display it, since it's in a proprietary non-standard format.

  • Software recommendation to remove duplicate files on HDD?

    Hello everyone
I downloaded Singular for this prupose, but to be honest, it's not done me any good. I have transferred a lot of files over from various external HDDs and disk images, and in Logic Studio actually have duplicate channel strip settings etc which are a real annoyance.
I'm looking for a program that will simply scan my pc and remove any and all dupes I have, whatever format they are.
    Please recommend
    Thanks

Just keep in mind that some users define a duplicate as not the original and some define both as duplicates...

  • I downloaded Pimsleur foreign language mp3's and put them on my iPad but now cant find them.  Any advice on how to access these files?!  Thanks

I downloaded foreign language mp3's to my iPad and iPod nano and cant find either one of them on the device even though they both claim to be there under "other" memory when I plug them into my computer.  Any advice on how to find these files on my iPad/iPod device?

I put them in iTunes and then dragged them to my devices.  On my iPad it looked like it put it under the 'purchased' tab but I looked in the music app and purchased tab and still cant fine them anywhere.  So I tried to move them over again but it says they are already there do I want to skip or duplicate.  Also, when my iPad is attached to my computer, I cant find them either.....

I recently went to Italy and loaded my digital photos into iPhoto. My wife loaded the same CF card so I now have hundreds of duplicates. Any ideas on how to find the duplicates other than looking at each photo individually?

Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion's Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

  • Finding duplicate file names

    Hello
How can I find the duplicate file names in database?
    select substr( file_name , instr (file_name, '/',-1)+1) from dba_data_files;
    users.dbf01
    tools.dbf01
    tools.dbf02
..What I want to find is, I want to find the duplicate file names.
    ie:
    users.dbf01
    users.dbf01
    sysaux.dbf02
    sysaux.dbf02
    ..

Using the query you posted above...
    select count(*), the_file_name

       select
          substr( file_name , instr (file_name, '/',-1)+1) as the_file_name
       from dba_data_files
    group by the_file_name
having count(*) > 1;Ought to do it.

  • I want to slim down my library by archiving out duplicate files

I use an amamzing piece of software called Duplicate Image Detetector. I ran it on my iPhoto 8 library and it found many duplicates, some "originals" some modified. I don't want all these dupolicates as my library is very confusing.
Duplicatee Image Detector show exactly where in the find the duplicate file are: e.g. 2006 originals, or 2006 modified.
How can I access these directories--not possible as normal finder folders since they are hidden behind iphoto application icon.

As Terence warned if you do any removing of files in the library via the Finder you will have trashed the library. Each photo will have a minimum of 2 files in the library, the original and the thumbnail. If you edit the photo or the photo is a portrait oriented photo from a camera with the auto rotate capability there will be a 3rd copy of that photo created in the Modified folder. It's the nature of the beast. If that's not acceptable to you you'll have to find another DAM (digital asset management) application to use. There are a number of them out there.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Installed 10.6.7 3 times, how do I delete the duplicate files

I installed the new update (10.6.7) about 3 or 4 times becuase things kept going wrong with some programs.
As a result my hard drive space has become a lot smaller.
Is there anyway of reversing the updates or finding the duplicate files I don't need?
    Thanks

You shouldn't have any duplicate system files, the OS should take care of that.
AFA where your disk space, use WhatSize or Omni DiskSweeper
to find out what's hogging it.
Do you have good backup? If not create one now.

  • While trying to upload an Audio file from a CD, iTunes won't let me.  Says there is a duplicate file.

I have been successfully uploading Audio CDs for a Social Studies Textbook onto my iTouch.  When I went to do this today, iTunes "Failed" because it says there is a duplicate file.  I have not uploaded this new CD, so that is not possible.  Each CD lists their "Tracks" the same way.  Track 01, Track 02, etc, however I renamed previous tracks in iTunes.
I need to get these files uploaded so we can listen to them on the iTouch, but I have had no success today.  The frustrating part is that I have done 3 CDs previously with no issues.
Even if I did find a duplicate file, I don't know how to delete the file.  I do have 1 failed "Track 01" in the Recently Updated section, but it won't play, because it can't "locate" the file.  When I try to delete in iTunes, "Delete" is greyed out and unavailable.
What do I need to do?

I keep getting 'check Internet connection' getting bit sick of it now ;( sorry cant help
