Any benefit to free subscriptions outside of Newsstand?

Situation: We have a client who will publish free folios to a free multi-viewer app. The client wants the app to live outside of Newsstand.
What we know: Free folios show up in the app as soon as they're published. But, Apple offers the ability to configure free subscriptions.
Our question: What's the benefit in configuring free subscription for non-Newsstand apps? Or, does Apple simply require free subscriptions for free-folio/free-multi-issue apps to live in Newsstand?
Thanks, as always.
Josh Penrod

Apple created the Free Subscriptions option specifically to enable apps with free content to work in Newsstand. I see no benefit in setting up free subscriptions outside of Newsstand, and I don't even know if it's possible.

Sorry i'm building a Free app with iTunes subscription but i see that on iTunes Connect the feature Newsstand "ON" is mandatory!

Yes, i need a iTunes Free App and Free Subscription without Newsstand feature!
NB: please see the attach! Free Subscription need Newsstand "ON"?

You have several options. It sounds like you like the subscription tile that appears at the top of the library. It isn't necessary to create a subscription app to add a banner to your library. You have several options. One option is to create a custom library. Another option is to create an entitlement banner. The entitlement banner is most often used with apps that offer direct entitlement, but you can add a banner without setting up an entitlement server.
For more information about your various options--including the entitlement banner, read this article:

  • Empty Viewer on Test iPad for multi folio iTunes Free Subscription

    Hello,
I'm trying to test a free subscription, multi folio newsstand app with renditions. However, the viewer opens without any folios - just the subscription tiles. I've triple checked the Apple product IDs, shared secrets and have all of the appropriate certificates. I'm at my wit's end! A few questions:
Should free subscriptions folios be public/free or retail? I'm reading conflicting things.
I'm a little unsure of the order in which I should publish folios in the folio producer. Should this step proceed or follow creating the .ipa for testing?
Does this naming of the actual folios matter, as long as they are the same? I only need the same exact Product ID for iTunes Connect and the App Builder, correct?
I've noticed that after you enter your shared secret there is a field to enter an iTunes url in the Admin Tool. Which url do we use? Do we enter this after the folio is public?
    Thanks!
    Darin

Free subscriptions should be Public/Free, not Retail.
It doesn't matter which order you publish the folios and create the .ipa for testing. When you publish the folios as Free and Public, they should appear in your testing app if (A) you specified the shared secret, (B) published the folios as Public/Free, (C) set up your renditions/folios correctly, and (D) specified the free subscription Product ID created in iTunes Connect in the DPS App Builder.
When you set up renditions for a subscription app, the Folio Name, Product ID, and Publication Date values need to be the same for all renditions, and different for each set of renditions. Specify the Publication Date values by choosing from the calendar picker.
Yes, the iTunes URL becomes available when you publish the app.

  • Free subscription, but not in Newsstand?

I have just successfully managed to make a subscription viewer with a free subscription, entered all info on Itunes Connect etc, but now I see this message on iTunes connect:
Your first free In-App Purchase subscription(s) must be submitted with a new app version that is enabled for Newsstand. After enabling your app version for Newsstand, select your free subscription(s) from the In-App Purchases section of the Version Details page and then click Ready to Upload Binary.
Does this mean what I fear - that if I make a free subscription Viewer, it MUST go into Newsstand? We want to stay out of Newsstand, since the content is not a periodical, but corporate information. I didn't specify Newsstand info in the Viewer builder, and the development viewer appears outside of Newsstand, so I guess that the viewer is ok. But will Apple reject the app?

Thank you for all your quick replies in this and related discussions Bob! I'm crossing my fingers for the possibility to specify URL schemes for viewers without subscriptions in a new release soon.

  • Free Subscriptions & Newsstand compatibility in Viewer Builder

    Hi guys -

  • Is there any benefit to keep the RAW file after editing outside Lightroom creates a TIFF

When working with RAW files in Lightroom and you choose to edit in Photoshop, the only option is "Edit a copy with Lightroom Adjustments" (Edit Original is grayed out).  This creates a .TIFF so after you come back from Photoshop you now have two copies of the photo--the RAW file and a TIFF version.
In my normal workflow, I make additional edits to the TIFF file in addition to the changes Photoshop made so I'm left with a "out dated" version of the RAW file.  Is there any benefit to keeping the RAW file at that point?  I'm doubling my disk usage by keeping it.
    Fire away.....

    Answering this question:
This got me wonderig why LR turns my 25-30mb CR2 RAW files into 80-95 mb TIFF files when it sends them to Photoshop for editing but Photoshop can open the same 25-30 RAW file in DNG format and save it as a 25-30 mb TIFF.  Why are the TIFF's LR creates 3x larger than the ones created by PS?
Camera RAW file formats are compressed to a small file size using manufacturer proprietary information about the image sensor pixel layout. This provides a more efficient loss-less file compression algorithm than TIFF's LZW or ZIP compression algorithms. LZW or ZIP compression is not used when Lightroom exports and opens an image in Photoshop for editing, but you certainly have that option when saving the file after applying your PS edits. DNG files using loss-less compression can produce a file size slightly smaller than RAW format, but I have no experience with DNG.
    Answering this question:
CS3 can't read Canon .CR2 RAW files (at least mine can't unless there is a plugin of some kind).
Support for newer camera models like your Canon 7D are only added to the then current (and later version) Adobe Camera RAW Converter and Lightroom. Newer Adobe Camera RAW converter versions (6.3) are not supported in older version of Photoshop like CS3. It is the nature of business marketing and also due to the large expense to support older application versions with "new" plug-in features. It would be a support nightmare!
    Hypothetical Example:
"Why doesn't Adobe Camera RAW 10.3 work properly with my Canon 1600 D MK XV 45 Megapixel camera in Photoshop CS3?"

However consider this, if you bought the Roku 2, would you ever move it from one TV to another? If this is something you would do, I'd chose that option.

  • Free subscription strategy

I have a monthly magazine in review with Apple that will appear in Newsstand, but while fixing a little bug, I realized that my subscription strategy may need to be revised.
The goal is to have a monthly magazine free to all users for the first year while the reader/subscriber base is built and then offer a paid subscription starting in year 2.
Originally, I set up a Free subscription assuming I could convert to paid at a later date. Once it is in paid mode with a number of paid subscription options (as well as single issue purchase), the magazine would also offer occasional free supplements along with the paid content. It would also offer a free 30-day trial.
However, from what I'm reading on this forum, once you utilize the Free Subscription in iTunes Connect, all subscribers who sign up for that this year will forever more be free even after the magazine converts to paid next year.
Is there a strategy to do what I'm after? Can I start with retail subscriptions (auto-renewable, for instance), but mark them free for the first year in pricing in lieu of using the free subscription? Some reading here shows that Apple may reject that.
    Thanks for any insight.
    Rob

Thank you Bob for those links.
After reading them, I think I may still have to go with messy for this particular publication. I'll be launching into a resort environment among a number of already free print newspapers, style/celebrity magazines, and a number of free content websites for this region. This will be the first tablet-only magazine in the area (content will not be replicated in print or the web, other than through sharing). Though some of the other media are paid, like a few of the local newspapers, paying for a subscription would likely only work once we had enough of a subscriber base to compete with some of my competitors' readership numbers (and by competitors, I don't really mean content so much as their ability to attract advertising). So 30-60 day free trials, first issue free or even pushing publication dates out doesn't seem practical since it will be at least a year before I could really attempt a pay model at the scale that would be appropriate.
This really is a test in my particular market to see if paid advertising can support an app like this, but in order for that to work I need differentiated content (check) and a subscriber base that grows quickly (hence, the free for first year theory). I may always want this particular magazine to be free as long as the readership is growing and the advertising can support it. Pushing for a pay subscription model too early would likely slow the speed of readership growth I need to be able to adjust advertising rates upward in the future. If the magazine was already established or extending a legacy product, I would be more apt to offer the sorts of free tools provided by the retail options. I think in the beginning, on an untested product, I might be better off with simply free. But I do understand your point. I'd like to offer additional titles down the line, and this experience, I think, will let me understand when charging for subs is appropriate, and when it is not.
If I did choose, at some later date, to go to retail subs, with first issue free or trials, I can still do that, correct? I clearly see the downsides, but it might be a path I have to take in the environment I publish in. In that case, what are my options?
Thanks. Your tips and tools have helped me very much getting to this point, so I am very appreciative of your insight. Just trying to find the best way into my market with the best effect. This new magazine will be very different in our marketplace than what has gone before.

  • Free Vs Retail in Newsstand

    Here is it,
I have a newsstand app with subscription for free available on app store.
And till now, all the issues are free to download.
I'm planning to publish one special issue for $0.99.
As it's the first charged issue for me, I'm wondering how it would appears in the app.
Situation 1: Everyone will see the 0.99 issue and everyone has to buy to download it.
Situation 2: The subscribers who subscribed before will be able download it for free, others have to buy it only.
Situation 3: The subscribers who subscribed before will be able download it for free, non-subscribers can subcribe for free immediately and get it for free; otherwises, buy it first.
Situation 4: Systerm Error, or something like that?
    Does anyone have any idea?

    Hi Tony
I can't answer all of your questions, but I know you can not have free content in the NewsStand. This is a limitation of Adobe for some reason.
I believe this will change next year, but not sure.
So with that in mind, you may need to re-think a few things.
    Cheers

    Tom

I'm not quite following. I have the app created and ready in iTunes Connect--it is a "multi-folio with iTunes subscription" and is enabled for Newsstand. The free subscription product ID in App Builder matches the Apple ID in iTunes Connect.
We wish to launch the app with an older issue (folio) and we'll publish the current issue in the coming days. All of the issues that will be available in this app will be free. And we would obviously like the users to be notified when a new issue is available.
Do I not need an in-app purchase for this older issue--the one that will be available immediately? As I have it now, in iTunes Connect, I click on the "manage in-app purchases" and I have this first, older issue that is ready to submit. And in the "manage newsstand" section I don't have any issues.
    Is this correct?

  • Changing from a Free Subscription Model to Paid

    Hello,
We are creating a DPS App for a client with very specific needs for Entitlement for their members. Unfortunately, their server will not be available for a couple of months but they still want to get their app to market as soon as possible (originally scheduled for submission next week). They also need their members to have free access to material until the server is in place.
They now want to be on iTunes Newsstand so a subscription model is required. However, the only way I can see for this to happen simply in the interim is to offer free subscriptions until the entitlement is up and running. Once the server is in place we would resubmit the app with a paid subs model for new subscribers plus entitlement for their members.
    My questions on this are:
Does this sound like a reasonable intermediate step? Is there a better suggestion for bridging these requirements?
What happens to the free subscriptions once the paid model is in place? Do the users who have subscribed for free still have access to the folios that were available when they signed up? Or will they now be required to resubscribe (for a price) or go through entitlement.
Any feedback and assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Kim

Thanks Bob - that's really important to know!
When we created our first app (for ourselves) we submitted it as paid subscription but with only free content (as that was all that we had available at the time). We were rejected by Apple as they said we could not ask for subscribers to pay for what was already free. Could this have been a discretionary call on the part of the Apple reviewer?
I have been looking at the option of the latest (in this case first) issue being free for first time app downloaders thinking (hoping) it would circumvent that issue - but maybe it isn't really an issue?

I had the same rejection the first time. After looking online at Adobe I thought it was a billing issue, so managed to get that rectifed. I hadnt used a shared secret (as it hadnt shown up because, I thought, the billing wasnt setup correctly). After we corrected the billing, I had access to the shared secret which I have used.
Any ideas what else this could be?
The app is a magazine app which is for free subscription. That's the inapp purchase. No folio in app purchases, because they are free. Sent with the first version on the magazine published, although Apple coulnt have got to it as the subscription time's out.
Help! Because this is the second rejection, it's two weeks on and I am getting close to an event which I must have the app live for.
    Thanks for any help,
    Matt

    Hi Neil,
I used the guide to make the issue — so I think everything is in place.
The first time around our billing wasn't setup so I didn't get to generate a shared secret. The second time I did.
I generated the secret — which I can view under the in app purchase for the (free) subscription in manage in-app purchases. That code I pasted into the admin account iTunes Connect Shared Secret panel for the same customer ID (Account ID). I opened the Folio Producer Organiser afterward — how do you know it registers the code? I didn't see anything to indicate such.
One thing — not sure if it's relevant — whenever the app fails it highlights in yellow the languages in the in-app purchase. I selected more languages this time to cover all the different kinds of English. Again, not sure if that's relevant?
Plus when I click the link to view the app in the app store it says it’s not in the UK store and tries to switch to the US, which if you allow it then says it can’t find. I think this is because it’s not approved and the link will be good when that happens (hence I copied that into the section just below the shared secret on the DPS account admin panel).
Honestly, I am a wee bit stumped now.

You have a (poor) solution in search of a problem.
PL/SQL will never be faster than plain SQL to access data within Oracle DB.You do not know what the problem is and you do not know the solution.
The only thing you know is a syntax error that I am having with a very small piece of code that is trying to do a very specific thing.
You have tried to reach too far and are blinded by trying to solve a big problem when there is really a small problem to solve.
    <ranton>
I (we) have a well thought out solution and algorithm that will solve our problem. I am attempting to implement the solution that has already been analyzed over several weeks now by someone that has 10+ years of knowledge of what data we need to move around and where. The problem is unknown to you. The solution is unknown to you, yet you are making statements about both.
I cannot write procedures, functions and have them called in the order that I need with plain SQL. Also after the implementation is complete in PL/SQL it will be fast enough for what we need to do. The requirement I have is not to have the one time script run as blazingly fast as it possibly can at all costs to providing an implementation. If I were to spend ten weeks writing this in assembly, it would be much faster than SQL but "faster" is not always better nor what is wanted here.
    This plane:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concorde
    is faster than this plane
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concorde
and is far superior in many, many ways, but there is a reason you have never flown one and a reason all airports everywhere do not have them coming and going every minute AND a big reason they were grounded to never fly again. I am not sure why I have to have this same discussion every now and then when someone comes to me and says "this would be faster".
Right now in another area I am having an unbelievable battle: Do we write our own messaging system that would be much faster than JMS, AMQP or anything we could simply pull off the shelf - I mean it will be faster but only cost $200K in its first year of writing and maintenance.
Please go home with comments like this and if you are not going to help contribute to the solution do not log on cheez.
"Fast" is not a requirement nor is it a concern with this problem and solution. It is completely beside the point.

  • Free CC for AAU Students, can't get free subscription

I recently got a notification from my school that CS6 will be expiring, and we would have to switch to Creative Cloud. This would not be a problem, if I could get the free subscription.
Earlier this year, I tried to sign up for the free CC, instead I was charged the student fee of $19.99. At that time, I did not have any money coming in, and had to cancel the subscription. When I brought up the fact that AAU offers free CC to current students, I was told that it wasn't true, and had to talk to my school. They said I should be able to get the free subscription, even when I had to close the previous subscription. After nearly giving myself a heart attack, I decided to go back to CS6, which I was hoping would work until I could get a job. Unfortunately, right as I went freelance, CS6 was promptly killed off.
Not only does this hurt my business, this will also hurt my grade. As a student, especially at the Academy of Art University, I already have to deal with enough crap. I demand the free Creative Cloud subscription. I only have exactly one year left, so it's not like it's going to take anymore money out of Adobe's pocket.

You are going to have to have your University fix this... my understanding (I do not work for Adobe) is that situations like this are managed by the individual person (that would be you) being given a redemption code... but, again, that is between you and your University, since it is the University that has the deal with Adobe, not you as an individual

  • Any benefit to partitioning a hard drive

Is there any benefit to partitioning a hard drive on a Mac?
    John

A very good reason for partitioning a larger drive into smaller "bites" is the usefulness of Erasing a Volume vs a Drive.
This is particularly helpful if you do video work or other works where contiguous free space is needed (free space with no interruptions).
After adding and deleting lots of files, a little "digital lint" gets left behind even after emptying the trash. With several large partitions (i.e. 5 100MB volumes on a 500GB drive) you can have 4 ongoing projects and still have an empty one. Once you're completely done with a video project on one of the Volumes, you just got to Disk Utility and do an Erase on that Volume. The other volumes remain, but that one is now "brand spankin' new" and clean.
Programs like Final Cut Pro like that. Especially during capture.
