Any chance of allowing FCPX to use more RAM?

Hi everyone!
Is there a chance of allowing Final Cut Pro X to use more RAM? It seems to use about 10-20% of the 16 GB of my MacBook Pro: even after quitting all the other apps. The speed result on rendering, transcoding and exporting is quite slow. And the activity monitor shows that the mac using very little of its resources, as shown below, during the process of exporting a 30' movie:

OK, the processes you specifically mention are also heavy GPU processes, which Activity Monitor doesn't report. A MacBook Pro does not have the most powerful GPU around, either.
And, the codec you're exporting to will matter a great deal, as mentioned. Long-GOP will take much, much longer than all I-Frame codecs.
As for Handbrake, it only uses the CPU, so you will see at least one core (100%) of your multicore CPU in use. FCPX and Motion use the GPU, which reduces useage of the slower CPU.
As for you recent post, we are not mind readers, we have no idea what your experience level is. And using the software as a professional does not mean you have professional level IT experience or training. Personally, I am a retired IT engineer, and know most pro-users of software lack a great deal of IT knowledge/experience. No one here has said anything demeaning, we're just here to help as best we can. If you take offence, well, if you ask a question, you're going to get a range of answers, and all from people who's only purpose here is to be helpful. Sorry if you took offense from those of us trying to help. But you are stating you don't understand, and we're giving the technical information necessary to answer. Snow Leopard uses more RAM?

I just installed Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro and found that RAM usage is obviously a lot more than 10.5 when my system is not running any demanding programs at all. With only Mail, Safari and iTunes running, RAM usage is already more than half of my 3GB RAM, which is the maximum for my 2.33Ghz MacBook Pro. I've heard some people say that to use 10.6, you need at least 4GB RAM to make your system really meaningfully workable. Is that true? Is it really true that 10.6 itself uses more RAM than 10.5?

If you've got the ram, SL will use it. It's supposed to be that way. Reading files from a hard drive really can't keep the OS running as fast as the other hardware can provide. New program features don't work as well with limited ram.
I think that every new OS uses more ram than it's predecessor (same for Windows). Snow Leopard may take less hard drive space, but part of that is because code for PPC Macs has been removed.
Every time a program has to use a hard drive to store part of it's code it's running too slow. I look forward to new memory management techniques that will allow for immediate use of the computer, but still continue to load itself into all the ram it can use. Some of this is already happening, but it will get even better.
As the CPU's get faster, and the memory management systems become more powerful I expect to be able to use even more ram in the future. My 3 year old MBP also has a 3GB limit, but my iMac supports 8 GB of much faster ram. I don't expect to be doing the same type of work with my laptop which shipped with Tiger as I do with the iMac and will probably sell the older laptop in another year to offset part of the cost of the next killer MBP.
Typically I need the MBP to run Windows at a clients site, and XP with 1GB assigned in Parallels has been good enough. Soon I'll need to run Windows 7 on a regular basis, and it requires 3 or 4 times as much ram as XP to get the best performance, plus the IC2D processor can use an update with a couple more cores
Ram is still the cheapest way to help a computer perform at it's best, so when I can, I add all the ram a machine can use and expect changes in the OS and programs to eventually 'obsolete' my machines every 3 to 5 years. I say obsolete because I tend to voluntarily upgrade to the latest hardware and programs when the prices taper off a little.
We are only seeing the beginning of what Snow Leopard can do. The more powerful programs aren't really ready for SL's performance enhancements yet, but as they come online in the next year or so I think they'll take advantage of even more ram...
Meanwhile, there aren't any programs that really require SL and there are still a few that won't work well or at all. Leopard worked very well on my laptop.

Has anyone else noticed firefox using more RAM in windows 7?

I've noticed this lately and firefox has been using more RAM lately. I only have 1 tab open and it doesn't matter what page I would be on when it happens. It wouldn't bother me if I still had 6GB of RAM but I am going on 3.5 now. Can you guys fix this please? Just being on this page alone it's at 2.15GB when it would usually be at 1.78 and in processes it says 260,000k. I don't have any other windows or tabs open.

IOS7 uses more RAM?

Does IOS7 use more RAM than 6.1.3? I used to have 190s MB free RAM (battery doctor) on my ipad mini which has 502 MB RAM, but after updating to IOS7 it dropped down to 100 MB even after I killed all apps on the multitasking, switched to Airplane mode, Reduced Motion and Airdrop off (if it helps).

MBP Memory Upgrade Using More RAM than Before

I have a 13-inch, late 2011 Macbook Pro with a 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 Processor. I recently changed my 4GB memory (2 modules) PC3-10600 DDR3 1333 MHz to a Crucial 16GB PC3-10600 DDR3 1333 MHz.
Before the upgrade, the activity monitor would show memory used at around 3.98GB or so, and I was running only chrome with a few tabs open. Using chrome and a few more apps would slow down the computer significantly, though still usable.
After the upgrade, the activity monitor shows memory used at around 6.5GB with the same apps running (just chrome). My computer does run a faster and can handle a lot more apps.
My question is, why is my Macbook using more RAM after the upgrade?

The short answer is that memory unused is memory wasted.
Mavericks is designed to decrease reliance upon mass storage, which is orders of magnitude slower than RAM. Mavericks will use all the memory available to it before resorting to using the swapfile. You are likely to find "swap used" to be zero, even with Google Chrome's notoriously profligate use of system resources.

If you did not activate the Find my Phone feature before your phone was lost, then there's no way to track it.
You need to notify your carrier so that they can disable your SIM. That's really all you can do.

Does 10.4.7 use more RAM?

I have been running 10.4.5 until yesterday when I erase and installed, and let Software Update install 10.4.7 on my Mini.
I also use Menu Meters and was shocked to see that about 285 MB were being used by the OS, Safari, Mail, Adium and xchat aqua...I think it's a lot considering most of the apps were really just sitting there, and I wasn't watching Video Bomb in Safari.
I noticed something called kernel task is taking between 92 and 98 MB. don't know if this is normal, but under 10.4.5, I seem to have only used 150 or 160 or so MB of RAM withe the same apps open as above.
is it me, or does 10.4.7 use a significant amount of RAM more. To me, 10% is significant.

In that case there isn't much you can do. However, unless you are actually running out of memory I wouldn't worry too much about it. OS X's memory management is pretty good, and as long as you have ample space on the hard drive for swap space there should be little need for concern. However, if you find you are experiencing a lot of disk thrashing and extreme slowdowns when memory is maxed, then you need to quit some applications to avoid continued use of VM. Every time I upgrade packages, system uses more RAM

As the topic says, Since my last system update, after a normal boot, the system consume about 60 to 70 MB of ram on buffered, and more that 100 at the first line when I run "free" command, against the half part used before.
Is it normally? kernel load more modules? or, new modules are bigger than before? because I don´t have new hardware on my tower?

You post is not all that clear to me....
However, when you run free it shows all the ram that is being used by applications and that are being cached. If you look at htop it will show you how much memory is being used by applications and programs.
You can get htop form extra. You could find the value via /proc/meminfo and do (MemTotal - MemFree) - (Buffers - Cached) = Total Memory in use by applications. If you don't understand this just use htop

Is there a way to make Aperture use more RAM for better performance?

I know in Photoshop or Lightroom (I forget which) you can designate the amount of RAM the program uses. Is it possible to do this in Aperture? If not, is there any other way. I just want it so that when I'm using Aperture, it designates most system resources to Aperture. Thanks.

I think that RAM designation in Ps or Lr is rather a limit/maximum which you can set then what it will/must use (perhaps in order to keep other programs running smoothly).
If you simply dont run any other programs Aperture should get all the attention it can get from your computer. Well maybe it cant use all your RAM if you have 8GB.. but it will use what it needs.
I believe that there are some terminal commands that can assign CPU priority to some processes, but in not entirly sure about how that works and if it helps.. just search for it on the web..

Why Yosemite used more ram than maverick?

After installing Yosemite 10.10, the system used 80% of ram after I streamed serials with Safari. Meanwhile, when I was using it from Maverick, the system only used 50% of the memory.As I typed this, the RAM usage significantly increasing. Please fix this issue of RAM usage. Thanks

How did you transfer the backup? It sounds like you may have transferred more or less than you should have, which is causing you problems now. Mountain Lion's memory requirements should be about the same as Lion's.
Note that your problems may or may not be RAM-related. Don't be too concerned about low free RAM... free RAM is wasted RAM, and low free RAM should not be a problem in and of itself. If you have low inactive RAM in addition to low free RAM, though, or if your page outs value in Activity Monitor is too high (10% or more of page ins), then it's probably RAM-related.
Still, you definitely should be able to run the same tasks on newer hardware in Mountain Lion just as well as you did in Lion, on the same amount of RAM. If that's not the case, something's wrong and some troubleshooting will be needed. You could try some of the tips in my Mac Performance Guide, though there may be some more specific steps you can take based on the answer to my initial question.

Instruct Firefox to use more RAM

I'd like to know if there is a way to disable some of the optimizations that Firefox has made for low end systems? I have 24GB of RAM and I'd like Firefox to not page out memory when I'm working with many tabs (some with large images).
Additionally I notice that Firefox tries to load certain tabs only when I switch to them, which isn't really what I want.
My goal is to let Firefox party on my system, using as much CPU/RAM as possible, so that my experience is as quick as possible. Is there a series of options I could set to do this?

If I dont shut my Mac off, does it use more ram?

I have noticed that if I dont shut down my mac (just put it to sleep when I'm not using it) I have less free ram. I have 16 gigs installed on my Macbook Pro, and right now I have 12.41 gigs free. All I am using is chrome and mail. If someone could give me an answer I would appreciate it.

whatever is loaded in your browser is also loaded into RAM - even if you put your macbook to sleep - the RAM will remain at whatever you see until you close all your apps - 12.41GB of free RAM is still alot - you won't run out.
remember, a lot of users here still running along with 4GB.

There are serveral brands and models of security cameras, baby monitors and nanny-cams that have apps in the the app store. They are designed to accomplish exactly what you are describing. Each brand of camera has its own app.

we ordered 16GB RAM in order to work with HDR images and big file sizes coming from hasselblad h2 and h3 (300dpi, 23 x 23inch, round 50 or 100 layers, filesize 1 - 2GB per image.)

"When you run Photoshop CS3 on a 64-bit operating system, such as Mac OS X v10.4 and later, Photoshop can access up to 8 GB of RAM. You can see the actual amount of RAM Photoshop can use in the Let Photoshop Use number when you set the Let Photoshop Use slider in the Performance preference to 100%. The RAM above the 100% used by Photoshop, which is from approximately 3 GB to 3.7 GB, can be used directly by Photoshop plug-ins (some plug-ins need large chunks of contiguous RAM), filters, and actions. If you have more than 4 GB (to 8 GB), the RAM above 4 GB is used by the operating system as a cache for the Photoshop scratch disk data. Data that previously was written directly to the hard disk by Photoshop is now cached in this high RAM before being written to the hard disk by the operating system. If you are working with files large enough to take advantage of these extra 2 GB of RAM, the RAM cache can increase performance of Photoshop.
The default RAM allocation setting in Photoshop CS3 is 70%. These settings should be optimal for most users. To get the ideal RAM allocation setting for your system, change the RAM allocation in 5% increments and watch the performance of Photoshop in the Activity Monitor. You must quit and restart Photoshop after each change to see the change take effect.
The available RAM shown in the Performance preferences has already deducted an amount that is reserved for the operating system from the total RAM in your computer. Watch your efficiency indicator while you work in Photoshop to determine the amount of RAM you'll need to keep your images in RAM. If the efficiency is around 60%, you'll see a large performance increase by changing your RAM allocation or adding RAM."

Want to use more CPU on FME 3.2

I have a machine 4x 6-core Xeon with 16GB RAM and want to take advantage of it.
I'm streaming H.264 , resolution 1280x720 and the CPU only used like 3% to 6%
Is there any way to make the FME use more of CPU (like for better compression at low bandwidth)

Of course, if I increase bit-rate then quality will improve.
If I streaming with 1 CPU socket 775 Core 2 Quad it used almost 60% for action movie.
Correct me if I'm wrong, CPU usage is to use for compression and my CPUs only used at 6 -> 10% . How can I increase CPU usage to encode to lower the bandwidth?
I just build a powerfull MAC Server by using hackintosh.
Will FME running on MAC is better quality then using on Windows?
