Any concerns with a 5th HDD in 2nd optical bay?

I'm thinking of adding a fifth hard disk drive to my Mac Pro 2.8GHz Quad-Core (Mid 2010) "Nehalem" machine. I'll use if for storing audio sample libraries, some of which will be used in streaming playback. Are there any special concerns or considerations I need to accommodate?
(I know I'll need an adapter. I'm planning to use OWC's Multi-Mount® adapter.)
Thanks!

Should not be a problem but I would install a temperature monitor utility just to keep an eye on things.  OWC is a fine choice.  Depending on just how large a drive you need you might want to also consider a SSD.  For those you could just let lay in there without mounting an adapter although adapters are sold for them too.
Note, from what I read 3TB drives run relatively "hot" so you might want to avoid putting those in there.  Not sure about Western Digital 3TB "green" drives though.

  • Using 2nd optical bay for 5th system HDD?

Is it possible in the newly released Mac Pro to use the 2nd optical bay to house the system drive?
I want to stripe 4 x SATAs in the main enclosures on a RAID-5 for HD capture/playout with a CalDigit Hardware RAID card and have OS + apps on the 5th drive.
Is this possible? Has anyone done it with success?

I have two drives in the lower optical drive bay on a 2006 model.
MaxUpgrades has a kit for the older design, check and see if it is compatible. Sort of expensive kit. One drive should be easier.

  • MacPro RAID Card - working with SSDs in 2nd optical bay?

I am planning to get a MP wit the Apple RAID card in order to configure 4 internal HDs as a RAID5. Does anyone have experience whether this setup would be compatible with one (or two) additional SSDs (boot drive) which will be connected via the 2nd optical bay.
Does this work at all - I understand the RAID card changes from SATA to SAS ports. I am not interested to include the SSDs in the RAID setup but would like to know whether this would work at all or whether I should better plan without the RAID card.

  • 2x SSD as RAID-0 in 2nd optical bay, orig. must function... also RAM ?

Hey all I know this is kind of a long post but I think it would help a lot of people out to get all of this information together in one spot so please help me figure this out. Thanks in advance.
I am purchasing a 3.33GHz Hexcore MP, aside from processor stock from Apple. My plans are:
Add 2x 4GB RAM to 2 of the 3 orig. 1GB chips, for a theoretical 10GB (for now) Is this feasible/advantageous?
2x 50GB OWC Mercury Pro RE SSDs as RAID-0, boot volume, in 2nd optical bay. The catch is I'd really like to keep the std. optical drive functional in the first bay.
4x 1TB 7200 drives in HD bays, two RAID-0 arrays, second as mirror of first.
So here are my series of questions:
1 - How can I hook up the 2 SSDs in the second bay as far as SATA/power are concerned. I do not want to hook them up externally and want a good fast pipeline for them, yet I do not want to disconnect the stock optical drive. Do I need any additional hardware/cables for an internal connection? I've also heard of a sort of hardware RAID enclosure that houses the two SSDs in the optical drive, occupying only one SATA/power connection and sharing it between the two of them. Does anyone know any specific products, and is the performance as good as two dedicated SATA connections?
2 - using Disk Utility (or similar), can the second RAID-0 2TB HDD set mirror the first, like two RAID-0s nested in a fat RAID-1, or, in a pinch, is Time Machine or cloning the way to go for redundancy there? The idea here is to not buy the RAID card.
3 - Can I partition a RAID-0 stripe or is that just a bad idea? The idea is to partition off space on the two RAID-0 HDD sets to mirror the SSD set (thus cloning the boot drive), plus a small partition for a windows VM. Any better ideas how to accomplish redundancy for the boot volume and isolation for a Bootcamp/VM partition?
I know this is a lot and may seem rather amateurish, but I'd really appreciate some help here. I'd like to get this ball rolling! Thanks in advance for your replies!

What are some of the 'other things' you refer to in this area that would yield a greater payback?
    • The biggest payback comes from having a separate System/Applications/Paging drive, by moving the Users folder off it completely.
When you are running a program, it will read a User file, execute a little, then move into an area of the program or System that is not currently resident in RAM memory. This requires an access to the System Drive, to get a part of the program, a part of the System, or a part of a Paging file. Each access to the System/Applications/Paging area or drive takes longer because the arm was positioned to read the User file, and has to seek a long way to get to the System etc. area.
Each time you access System stuff, this moves the arm away from your User input file, and the next User read will take longer because the drive arm has to be moved back to the User file.
Separating System/Applications/Paging onto a separate drive from all User files speeds up everything you do.
    • If this drive is fast, that is better.
Access time on a spinning disk varies varies, but it is commonly 10 to 20 milliseconds. It consists of seek time (time to move the arm to the track desired and verify that it has arrived at the proper track) and rotational latency (average time for the platter to spin around so that the required block is under the read/write head).
At 7200 RPM, (120 spins/sec) one full spin takes 8.3 milliseconds, and half that amount is about 4.2 milliseconds. At 10,000 RPM, (166.6 spins/sec) one full spin takes only about 6 Milliseconds, and half that is only 3 milliseconds.
A drive with a faster seek time, a higher RPM rate (which indirectly gives a faster transfer time), and a larger cache (approximately in that order) will speed up your System/Applications/Paging drive and make your Mac seem faster. For example, using a small 10,000 RPM Velociraptor instead of a 1TB 7200 RPM WD Black is snappier overall. It seeks faster and is spinning faster so the arm is positioned faster, the data get into read position faster (on average) and once reading has begun, the data are presented to the drive cache faster.
Access time plus transfer time is usually dead time, in that little else can proceed until the data transfer is complete.
    • If this drive is a \[no seek time, no rotational latency, fast transfer rate] SSD, that is Much better.
An SSD eliminate both seek time (positioning the arm to the track) and rotational latency (time waiting for the disc to spin around to the right block to be read) and substitutes a miniscule (by comparison) read time. Once reading has begun, a huge block of data is immediately available for transfer, so the effective data transfer rate is also much higher.
    • If this drive is an SSD Striped RAID, that is marginally better still, because it increases the effective transfer time.
But the access time, the Big Boat-Anchor in this process, was almost eliminated by using the FIRST SSD. None of the typical seek-time and rotational latency gains of RAID-ing spinning disks are recovered by RAID-ing SSDs. The transfer rate is increased, often nearly doubled, but that is the smallest part of the delays caused by disk accessing.

  • Are there any concerns with running Cisco VSS in a MS Hyper-V Environment?

    Hello,
I'm in the process of purchasing dual 6807-XL switches that will run in a VSS configuration and I was wondering if there are any concerns or items I should be cognitive about?  We are a MS Hyper-V shop in the arena of server virtualization.  Although I don't work on any of the servers as I handle all network-related operations, I would still like to know of any "gotchas" before I install/configure our new chassis.  I guess what I'm looking for is interoperability issues in relation to a VM environment when running a network core using VSS.  Thanks in advance!
    Regards,
    TLock

    Reza,
I have another question regarding VSS I thought I'd post here rather than to a new DB.  According to Cisco, "If for some rare reason all VSL connections are lost between the virtual switch members leaving both the virtual switch members up, the VSS will transition to the dual active recovery mode (http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/switches/catalyst-6500-virtual-switching-system-1440/prod_qas0900aecd806ed74b.html)."  How does this affect traffic for switches connected via MEC?  Will it began using STP/MST, if configured, for switches with dual links to different chassis?  Just curious.  I plan on testing various scenarios prior to putting these chassis into production by simulating some of the common network outages we've had in the past.  Thanks in advance!

  • 2nd HDD drive on optical bay caddy - Pavilion dv6700

    Hi everybody,
I hope that someone here can help with that, because I'm running out of ideas...
I recently updated the main drive of my dv6700 notebook (dv6820es) with a SSD drive. I did a fresh installation of Win_7_32 and there was no problem at all.
But this drive is not that big, so I decided to plug in the old SATA-HDD through the optical drive bay in order to gain storage capacity. I ordered for that a SATA-to-PATA caddy that fits perfectly.
The big problem now is to make this combination work:
BIOS behavior: it's hard to tell if the BIOS detects the the drive properly, as long as this model BIOS is quite poor in information/configuration options. Anyway, when I press F9 with the 2nd HDD plugged in, a new boot option appears along with the SSD, and is listed as "7. Notebook hard drive". The HDD is spinning also. Because of all that I assume that the BIOS detects, at least, "something" (but again, I can't say if the HDD as it is or just some unknown decive). By the way, the BIOS is updated to the latest available version: F.58 A.
Windows behavior: for what I can see, Windows acts as if the drive wasn't there. Nothing in the "Device manager" and nothing in the "Disk manager", just the SSD drive is detected. With one exception, in one of the many restarts I did the drive showed up. The usual text bubble said "intalling drive..." and apparently it installed fine. After the installation there was this new "IDE drive" under "Disk drives" in the "Windows device manager". Fine, it seemed to work! But sadly I saw my hopes getting dashed in the next step, when trying to initialise the disk through the "Disk manager". First it took a long time (like 4-5 minutes) with the program just "thinking", to finally throw one of these infamous "cyclic redundancy" errors. I restarted but the drive was again not there. And it never showed up again, just this one time.
Sad thing is that I can't tell what made the difference. I updated some things like the Intel chip drivers... this Intel Matrix Storage driver (not really necessary, I guess, but just in case)... during all this process. But actually nothing in particular the time it almost worked.
My ATA drivers are the newest AHCI available for my chipset. Is there some driver I'm missing? Is there some impossibility for the 2nd HDD (PATA) to work with the SSD running in AHCI mode?
Well, I think that's all (sorry for the long post).Perhaps someone endured/solved a similar issue.

    Hello Erico,
    sorry for the confusing information.
The HDD is a SATA drive and the optical drive is a PATA drive, hence I used a SATA-PATA caddy. Something like that:
    http://www.newmodeus.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_5&products_id=226
(Though the one I ordered it's not from this manufacturer)
Considering that, although the HDD is a SATA drive, it should be detected as a PATA one. Is there some way to make both SATA AHCI and PATA interfaces work together?  Not in this case. It takes a ethusiast level motherboard and advanced BIOS.
[Edit: the chipset is, by the way, from the Mobile Intel 965 Express Family.]
Perhaps the one in the link has a better  translation cable setup than the one you purchased. Many people appear to be satisfied with it.
The hard drives physical connection have to be of the same type for the reason I expressed in my previous post unless there is a working translation cable from SATA to PATA.
If your notebook had a dual drive bay and you installed the drive in the bay with a caddy and SATA cononector cable it would be simple.

  • I talked with Adobe Yesterday about removing Elements from my Mac, if there were any concerns with Lightroom 5 and Photoshop CS6

The answered no, that all I needed to do with Elements was to drag it to the Trash. I did that. Now in Lightroom 5 do I not see Photoshop in the EDIT IN menu, all my plug-is are missing as well! Ive found two papers on the subject, one for both programs where they say to find the Lightroom fine "com.adobe.Lightroom5.plist" and a similar Photoshop fine in >user>Library>Preferences. Neither exist on my mac! Im in a process of a system search to make sure, but so far, no good!
I'm looking for a fix, PLEASE. To stop and delete both programs, reinstall this and ALL the plug-in's isn't something I want to contemplate if I don't have to!

Sorry Keith, I didn't look at it as a duplicate post since I initually approached it as a Photoshop issue and have since come to see it as a lightroom issue. I've subedquently found the photoshop preference file, deleted it and restarted Photoshop which recreated that file. That didn't help.
SInce my initial concern was with Photoshop I failed to notice than none of the Lightroom plug ins were showing up. Researching that fix, what I found was essentially the same as with Photishop except the Lightroom preference file. Now I'm not finding that file but I'm doing a full system search.
Some caveats to all of this are, the photoshop and Lightroom plug ins are the same. Theyre resident and run in CS6. Additionally in Lightroom if I go to preferances> external edit, I see photoshop and all the plug ins listed there.

  • AppleScript to open 2nd optical bay?

Yep, I know that with an Apple keyboard it’s Option-Eject. I’m using a Logitech diNovo Mac Edition keyboard and that combo opens the primary drawer only.
I know that I can do this by opening Disk Utility, choosing the drive, and clicking the “Open” button, but I'd prefer to have a script or other alternative. Any help would be appreciated.

...where "#" is the number of the device. You can find out the number of the desired device by opening Terminal and entering drutil list.

  • Which DVD burner for 2nd optical bay?

    Hi All,

    Hi, Melmac!
Pioneer DVR-110 or DVR-111 and NEC ND3550A are favorites. Both are highly compatible with Tiger.
If you can put up with multiple rebates, you can't beat the price on this NEC. (I'm using the same one in my QS 2002 Mac.)
Here's a link to video install instructions. The process is quite simple. You could just add the new one and run two in the MDD, if you want...

  • Any problem with standing it on its side

I have placed my Apple TV standing on its side. THis makes it fit in with the DVDs I have next to it. I have space for ventilation. Should there be any concerns with leaving it this way

Falling over, overheating and premature failure, other than that nothing.
Surely if it was supposed to be stood upright it would come with a cradle/base or something?
Heat rises and when AppleTV is flat it has a large surface area to dissipate heat from. If end on you may have the hottest components at the bottom or the top and circulation and hence dissipation inside AppleTV might be poor without you knowing it.

  • Concerns with Dropbox to store/backup referenced images?

    Hi,
I'm looking for an alternative for my current cloud backup solution (Mozy) since the current scheme requires me to pay 23$ per month for my ca. 260Gb of image data. Since I also pay 10€ per month for 1TB of Dropbox space, I seriously consider to cancel the Mozy subscription and use the available Dropbox space as a cloud-based backup solution for my original images (next to my Time-Machine backups).
To be clear : I only work with referenced images. I have no originals inside my Aperture library. I do not plan to transfer my Aperture library to my Dropbox. I do not need to work with my originals from multiple computers. I only use Aperture from one single iMac.
I have read multiple threads about Aperture/Dropbox combinations, but they all cover storing your library on Dropbox. That's not what I intend to do. I just want to transfer the folder structure (where my referenced images are stored when importing into Aperture) to Dropbox.
Are there any concerns with storing the referenced images on Dropbox?
    Thanks for your help,
    Mitch

    Funky,
What is the best way to back it up? Just copy the files to another hard drive?
That will definitely work, but how will you tell what you have backed up and what you have yet to backup? A better solution (if you are using Aperture 3) is to use the backup function when importing.
I am also using Time machine, I assume that it is backing up attached external drive (I have not "excluded it"), is that correct?
Well, that's a Time Machine question, but according to the following thread, just because you didn't explicitly exclude it doesn't mean it's not excluded.
has anyone had good experiences with on-line backup solutions?
You should search the forum for a thread with lots of input from the last week or so. There was a lot of talk about some on-line backup.

  • Advice needed - optical bay caddy and HDD for T530

Since I rarely use my optical drive and frequently back up files to an external hard drive, I'd like to put a HDD in the optical bay and just swap it out for the DVD player whenever that is needed.
My T530 (i5-3210M Win7HP) has a 256GB Crucial mSSD for the boot drive and programs;  the original 500GB/7200 rpm in the drive bay has data files, Outlook and Quicken files, music, photos and documents.
For the optical bay HDD 500 GB would be plenty, but the 750 GB is only about $10 more, so why not?  (I'd probably put the 750 in the drive bay and make it the data drive, with the 500 in the optical bay for a back up drive... and this is about convenience more than need.)
Best I can tell the optical drive supports SATA 6GB/sec but most of the 2.5" 750GBx7200 rpm drives are SATA 3GB/sec.  (On the other hand, the Hitachi MK5061GSY 500GBx7200 that came in my T530 appears to be 'only' SATA II, and most forum posters suggest there's not a noticable difference.)
Of the 750 GB drives it seems the Seagate Momentus ($82) and Western Digital Scorpio Black ($78) would be the top two choices.  I think they're both 9.5mm and would fit. Some reviews indicate the Western Digital is quieter.
The caddy is more problematic, as there are so many choices, and many appear to be poorly-fitting Chinese knockoffs.  I'm not inclined to pay $70 for the Lenovo, when the others are in the $10-15 range, but I do want one that fits well and works well and lasts.  (And is at least SATA 3GB/sec.)  I can't tell much from the prices or pictures, and there's contradicting information in the 'product reviews.'
So I need a 12.7mm optical bay (Ultrabay) caddy for a 9.5mm HDD that fits well without gaps, matches the T530 case, and supports at least SATA 3GB/sec.
Will I need the rubber 'bumpers' or is that just for SSD drives?  If I need them, do they come with the caddy or drive?  If not, what do I get and where?
Does either the Seagate or Western Digital offer an advantage in function or reliability?
Please correct anything that I've mistated or misunderstood.  Thank you for your advice and recommendations.
    Solved!

    How the four screws work.
HD's and SSD's usually have four threaded holes on the bottom and also two threaded holes on each long side. The video you may have seen with the screws going through holes in the bottom of the caddy into the threaded bottom holes of the HD is a video of the $45 Newmodus caddy. That's how they affix the drive to the caddy.
The Chinese caddy I linked uses the screws in a different way, and it is actually pictured in the top right illustration on the caddy.
While the drive is out of the caddy, you just thread the screws (through nothing) into the side holes on the drives. So, the drive now has two little protruding screw heads on each side. The only purpose is to create those four slight protrusions - two on each side.
Then you insert the drive into the caddy by sliding from one end. The thing on the bottom of the caddy picture is like a little door that folds up and down. You lift up the door and slide the drive into the other end. The protruding screw heads slide under little rail protuberances that are molded inside the sides of the caddy. When you have slid the drive all the way forward into the electrical connectors, you then snap down the door behind it. The door prevents the drive from moving forward or back. The screw heads wedged under the rails prevent the drive from moving up or down. You can do the entire operation in 5 seconds.
Ny-compu-tek seems to have the same caddy listed under various titles and prices, including one that specifically says T530. I think that's just a marketing gimmick, as the T530 takes the same caddy as the T520. Anyway the one I linked is the least expensive from that source and fits perfectly.
It was also shipped out in one day with a tracking number.

  • Work well in my mini but not in my iMac 27". Only difference is 27" with CS5 , are there any concerns?

My mini works well with Lion but my 27" iMac always stop some where. I did install two times and restore to SL because I want new thing but I have to work. The difference between two computer sis just the iMac with CS5 but the mini don't. Any concern ?

I don't really have a suggestion, other than to point out that others have had problems with CS5 in Lion.  You did not describe your problems, and I don't use Adobe CS, so I have no idea whether that might be the cause in your case.  If the problems people describe with CS5 match your problems, then you may want to update to CS5.5.

  • Change the SYS & SYSTEM Oracle passwords with BRTOOLS, any concerns ?

Hello, I would like to change both the SYS and SYSTEM Oracle passwords with BRTOOLS :
    (1) Can I use BRTOOLS to change them, or, I have to change them through SQLPlus ?
    (2) Any concerns, will this password change affect my SAP normal operations ?
    (3) Do I need to re-start the whole SAP UNIX system when I complete the password changing ?
    (4) Or changing these 2 passwords is totally an Oracle RDBMS issue, it will not have any effect on SAP ?

But I failed. I was going to change the password of SYSTEM, but why SAP asked me to enter the password of SAPDEV ?
Why ? OK, then I entered the SAPDEV password (it is the same as SYSTEM's old password).
Then, I called SQLPlus and entered login name : SYSTEM, but why its correct password was still the old one, the new one failed. Why ?
I just wanted to change the password of SYSTEM, why it was related to SAPDEV ?
