Any cures for my narcoleptic 17" PB G4?

My 1.67 Ghz 17" AlBook is currently used as a desktop machine (the monitor has a band running vertically on the screen that we can't afford to have repaired) with a 23" Apple monitor and other assorted devices (scanner, printers, etc.) attached. Up until recently things were running fine. I had it set to turn the monitor off after being idle for about an hour but the brain was kept running for Increase (Folding@Home). Recently I downloaded and installed the latest Apple updates and now the computer is going to sleep randomly and without any warning. I've tried everything from the simple stuff like verifying the permissions with disk utility to the much more extreme zapping PRAM and even resetting the PMU. I thought that maybe the external hard drive I use for storage was perhaps pulling the system to sleep, but that isn't the case. Things will run fine for a few minutes then POW! It goes to sleep. Usually it will reawaken with a key hit or mouse movement but not always. And it seems that if I try doing something like move some files or sort through some music in iTunes then the sleeping happens much more quickly.
ANY suggestions on what to do or try next?

Upon further review: Nope. The software reinstall has not helped. I got back up to 10.5.3 and the problem was back. Now, in the midst of my second reinstall the sudden sleep problem is back. Sometimes all I have to do to wake the machine is move the mouse or hit the return key. Sometimes that isn't enough. And sometimes all I have to do it wait a few minutes. GRR.It appears that after the third or fourth drop off the machine just won't wake up again. I have to take the battery out, remove the power adapter and hold the power button until the machine fires up again. Sometimes...
Anyone else out there feeling my pain? Any solutions?

    I don't know if this question has already posted but if not here is my problem: I repeatedly get a blank screen except for the error message "blocked plug in" when browsing in safari and trying to view web page included videos.     Which Safari? Which Flash? I'm running Safari  5.1.10 (6534.59.10) w/Flash Player 13.0.0.214 and am not getting any of those messages. To get the latest Flash Player, go to http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer, download the latest version, and install it.

  • Any cures for dropped frames

    It seems as though ever since I upgraded to Tiger and FCEHD 3 I getting more dropped frames when I play back my video sequences in the timeline. Aside from the info in the dropped frames warning box, of which I all to familiar with now, is there something else I can try to rectify the problem. BTW my scratch disk is a 120GB Ezquest Cobra 2 drive.

    Thanks Al. I've checked all the easy stuff and still am getting drops. I'm beginning to suspect that a defrag is in order. My external hd is partitioned (80GB for video and 40GB for music files). The drive was completely zeroed out when I set up the partition.
    The dropped frames occur in the exact same spots in the same clips in the sequence. These clips play fine in the Viewer and I had no problems when I captured them.
    How does this approach sound:
    Recapture the clips and see if the dropped frames resolve.
    If that doesn't work then back up my external drive and defrag it. Hopefully my project will not be negatively affected.
    Lastly buy another external hd and dedicate it to video files.
    How does that approach sound? Any other advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    On user entry forms with a MySQL database, dates must be
    entered as YYYY-MM-DD, which for Americans is counter-intitutive. I
    know about the option to use a series of very long drop-down lists
    to select each of the pieces, but I find that both cumbersome and
    time consuming. I currently am using instructions to the user with
    each date field, but that is clutzy.
    Does anybody know of a way to use "mm/dd/yyyy"?

    MySQL expects the dates to be stored as YYYY-MM-DD in a DATE
    or DATETIME
    field. Use your script to convert from MM/DD/YYYY if
    necessary, before
    you insert the date into the DB. If you're on PHP, have a
    look at its
    date and time functions, especially strtotime() and
    strftime().

    New hard drive is indicated. You could run the Disk Utility from your install disc and verify/repair drive, but almost certainly, you need a new drive

    ... that happens 1)  just after power-on and 2) after the audio wakes up from "sleep"?

    I downloaded the new iOS 5 ....lost most of my apps ..restored them...however the kindle books app does not allow me to open books previously purchased from Amazon...the books are shown in the archive,but will not open when placed in home...a mesage comes up to uninstalll the books from "home' and uninstall the app and reinstall...which i have done to no avail several times...any cure for this?

    You have Sophos installed, which is certainly capable of causing panics. However, the panic logged above happened in safe mode, and wasn't caused by any third-party software. That type of panic is usually caused by a memory fault.
    If your model has user-replaceable memory, and you've upgraded the memory modules, reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts. Clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol. Aftermarket memory must exactly match the technical specifications for the model.
    Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, though generally unreliable, will sometimes detect a fault. A negative test can't be depended on. Run the extended version of the test, if applicable.

    Hi All,
    I had this problem today myself, and was frustrated repeatedly by the '4002' error.
    I have literally just fixed the issue by doing the following steps:
    1: Go to the 'Store' tab and select 'Turn Off iTunes Match'
    2: Return to the 'Store' tab and select 'Update Genius'
    3: Wait for this to complete succesfully, the return to the 'Store' tab once more and select 'Turn On iTunes Match'.
    4: iTunes Match will now go through the motions and should succeed!

    Why are you using a ref cursor? There is no need for it. Why are you even using a cursor at all in the 1st place when you doing a single (no-loop) fetch?
    When you write code, you need to have justification for why you wrote what you did. To do that, you need to know exactly what each line of code you write does - and knowing that, you can make the call whether that line of code does what is required or not. And to be honest, your code is pretty messy as it uses superfluous concepts (why subtype a ref cursor when you can instead use the sys_refcursor type?) and incorrect and complex approaches (using an explicit ref cursor with manual binding when an implicit cursor is easier).
    For example (and note the proper use of programming language syntax standards regarding pascalcase and camelcase):

  • Any workarounds for the X11 apps segmentation faults on intel with 10.4.8 ?

    Hi,
    We've an X11 application, compiled for PPC, which runs fine with a G5 iMac on 10.4.8. However, it crashes with a segmentation fault on a MacBook Pro with 10.4.8 (running through Rosetta).
    Searching the web, we found that this seems to be a widespread problem for X11 apps running on Intel Macs with 10.4.8.
    Has this been submitted as an important bug to Apple?
    Are there any workarounds for it?
    Is the problem specific to PPC-only builds, or does it also happen with Universal builds?

    A powerpc-binary program running under Rosetta can only load powerpc-binary modules...can't cross in and out of emulation within a single process. Perhaps your program is trying to load a module from X11 that is present as an intel-only binary? Rosetta is certainly no future-looking cure-all, just a stop-gap to allow one to keep using older stuff, and it is kinda fragile sometimes. If your target audience is both powerpc and intel machines, compile as a universal binary so it's native for everyone.

    First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
    Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.

    For Windows, you can split screen and you can see few screens at the same time. There are 3 "buttons" on the top right corner, you can use the middle one to split screen then move each screen to a different area.

  • Migration from old MacBook Pro to newer, lose iPhoto folders. Any cure?

    In a recent migration using migration assistant from old MacBook Pro core 2 duo (10.6.8) to a newer quad core i7 (10.8.3), when I opened iPhoto for the first time and nothing happened. I then imported all my photos from the old iPhoto, and lost all folders I had. Now it seems I have to redo all folders. Any cure? I could do a clean install if there is a solution.

    Granted, they online versions won't be IDENTICAL to the Mac versions you're used to, but it will get you through until you get back home, and you SHOULD have the ability to save the docs in a format you can use with your Mac apps later.
    Another alternative is the free OpenOffice.org and similar open-source Office applications that can read and write MS-Office file formats.

  • TS1362 Everything works except the **** thing won't play. I push the play arrow or instruct it to play and it stays eternally paused. No problem buying things from these dogs,just can't play the when everthing pops up on screen.Any ideas for a hopeless ol

    Replying to myself. Kept trying different areas of the ipod this evening, clicking various buttons, including some I'd never used before. All of a sudden I could see my Nano in iTunes. I quickly clicked on Restore before iTunes changed its mind about recognizing the iPod. Moved some songs onto it and it appears to be back to normal.  Keeping my fingers crossed.
