Any Decent On Line Overviews of Snow Leopard

I've been using MAC for years but just go a new computer with Snow Leopard. Is there any on-line source which points out new possibly useful functions.
I've noticed that the "Services" has been modified and I'm finding it frustrating to get back that functionality in my Safari interface.
Thanks

Here's an old overview of the enhancements:

You have a very old printer. The lastest driver I saw was one for Tiger. Whether it works in Snow Leopard?
Are you able to physically attach the printer to your Mac (unknown), because being very old, it may not even be able to plug into it. Most modern Macs require USB.
The link I found, though I don't think the software would be all that useful.

  • Flash CS4 line spacing in Snow Leopard

I've just switched over to Mac OS 10.6 and found that the line spacing has changed in my files. Basically it seems to have increased the line spacing so the static text fields take up more space. I've updated Flash and I'm now on 10.6.1 but the problem remains. It doesn't do this on 10.5.8 or in InDesign and SL (but it does do a similar thing in Quark 7.5). It doesn't seem to matter what font it is either. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Hey FlipMacoy,
Don't do that, save your time!
There was a problem with Postscript 1 typefaces and Snow Leopard (not confined to Flash, but also affected other apps including Quark 7), but the new SL update (think it came out last week) has fixed those issues.
You just need to run Software Update and get the latest version of SL, and then everything should go back to normal.
I've only tried two files, but they appear as I would expect them to.
    Good luck.

  • Cannot connect to any IM clients since updating to snow leopard.

    Hey Guys
I'm having a problem with my IM clients since updating to 10.6. I use Adium primarily and have Microsoft messenger through Office 2008 installed. Every time I try and connect to the servers I get a message in Adium telling me it has a connection error and Microsoft Messenger tells me I am not connected to the internet. I have tried other clients such as Pidgin and have the same issues and my MSN still works on my windows desktop. I am absolutely stuck with what to do. Adium support says that as it doesnt work on Microsoft messenger its nothing to do with them and its a issue on my side :S.
    Any help is appreciated.

Thanks for responding guys. I looked to see if their was a firewall option somewhere I could disable or make a exemption for but came up with nothing. Today I reinstalled snow leopard again and every thing seems ok now. I really am not sure what the problem was.
Thanks for your help anyway. this could help others in a similar situation.

  • Xerox n17: any way to use it under Snow Leopard

    Hi all,
After Snow Leopard install my trusty Xerox n17 laser printer is no longer recognized, even after re-installing the "current" driver from the Xerox driver page. The n17 is not listed as a supported printer in Apple's tech note on printers under 10.6.
Does anyone have any idea how to make this great old printer work under Snow Leopard? Is it a doorstop now?
    Thanks.
    Bill

I did not take a look at the driver Xerox has on its website. My guess is that it should work as the DocuPrint N17 is a PostScript printer. You could also use the driver (PPD) found on the cups.org page http://www.cups.org/ppd.php?L1100I60+T+Qxeroxn17. My guess is that it will be identical to the one Xerox is providing.
The most likely cause of your problems is that OS X 10.6 no longer supports AppleTalk. You will have to set the printer up to use either the LPD or JetDirect protocol. There are numerous posts in this forum dealing with how to do this.

  • Trying to download mountain lion but not impressed first time didnt load all and now trying to download again and it just freezes for days and never commits it in full can you help or is there any way to revers back to snow leopard

I have tryed to load mountain lion several times and it just freezes for days on end is ther any way of reversing my dession back to snow leopard as i think it too muctch to dowload and when it does parts are missing and my epson scanner 3170 photo does not work as effeciant as it did i am not to pleased with it at all and think this download should be on a disk.
    Not impressed at all.
    Best Regards.
    Phil

If you don't have a backup make one now of all your own data, you can just drag your Documents folder to another disk, assuming that is where you keep your own data. Then erase the disk with Disk Utility by booting up holding cmd-r. Choose Disk Utility > Erase tab from the screen that is presented. Then install from your SL disk.

  • Any printer that is geared for Snow Leopard

Are there any printer models/brands that are more suited for Mac OS X?

Based on what printers I use works with Leopard or Snow Leopard:
HP laserjet 2300 usb or directjet ethernet, useHP v 2.3 drivers or 2.2 is fine
HP laserjet 2430 usb or built in direct jet use HP v 2.2 or 2.3 drivers is fine
HP Color laserjet CP2025dn use HP v 2.3 drivers ....the HP version drivers can be downloaded from Apple site
Epson R800 use Epson v 2.2 recently uploaded drivers or
if you don't want to use the included uploaded drivers then go to each manufacturers web site and download the previous software drivers which will work:
    epson13197 for the R800
LJ 2025dn v 770751 for the Color HP laserjet

  • Are there any free down loads available for snow leopard os x10.5.8?

ARE THERE ANY FREE DOWNLOADS FOR APPLE SNOW LEOPARD OS X 10.5.8?

If you're trying to upgrade the OS, no; you need to buy 10.6 on DVD from the online Apple Store.
If you're trying to download something else, it depends on the product.

  • Can one buy a new top of the line MacPro with Snow Leopard on it directly from Apple store?

I'm considering a new Mac Pro desktop with two identical video graphics card, a bazillion GB of RAM, etc., but want no part of Lion and/or Mountain Lion.  I'm wondering if Apple still sell them.
Has anyone bought one such beast from the Apple store recently?
    Thanks in advance.

Thank you for the lightning fast response, mende1.
From the lack of Snow Leopard options at the Apple store, I was already getting the impression that it was not feasible anymore.  It's good to know for certain.
That leaves me with the choice of a used/refurbished Mac or a Windoze box with Windows 7 on it, which can still be obtained from HP, and maybe Dell and others.
Just as I want no part of the stinky lions, I want no part of Windows 8 either.
From my point of view, the engineers at Apple and Microsoft lost their minds with their latest operating systems.  It's mind boggling!

  • I have received numerous requests from Firefox to download security updates. In each case, I have been unable to connect to the server-it just hangs for 45 minutes or more. Any suggestions? I'm running Snow Leopard, latest update.

Macbook Pro purchased prior to Feb, 2011

If you have problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop
    * Firefox 5.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
    * Install the new version that you have downloaded
Your profile data is stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder, so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data.

  • JavaFX 2.x support on Mac OSX Snow Leopard

    All,
Does anyone know if a standalone JavaFX 2.x application can run on Snow Leopard? After digging into the system requirements, I know it's not "officially" supported however it seems odd to me that the largest installed Mac desktop user base is still running Snow Leopard and the premier Java desktop GUI development technology doesn't support it. Are there any show stopping technical reasons why Snow Leopard is being excluded?
I'm asking only because I'm developing a commercial desktop application and want to fully embrace JavaFX for the presentation layer but Snow Leopard is a requirement at least for the near term.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts!
    - Zep

    Richard,
Thanks for the insight, that makes complete sense to me. The best estimate I can find puts Lion adoption at about 50% of the total Mac desktop install base hence my confusion about the lack of support (even if Apple has moved on). I do understand that you need to draw the line somewhere with OS support, especially if there are critical API's available only in Lion. Hopefully, moving forward from Lion, this will be less of an issue as I want to really push this technology as our cross-platform solution.

  • Home sharing does not work after update to snow leopard 10.6.4 and iTunes 9

I am using home sharing since about a year without any problems. After updating to snow leopard 10.6.4 and iTunes 9.2 it suddenly does not work anymore.
On my iMac and my Mac Book Pro I get error code 3259 and it tells me to check my firewall and to enable Port 3689.
I did not change anything in the firewall settings, itunes on both allows data traffic in both directions. I also do not find any option to activate a port ( also wondering why this is suddenly now necessary)
I deactivated home sharing on both machines and enabled it again. It still does not work.
On both machines iTunes displays the the library on the left side but like said it is not accessable
With Finder I can access the other computer from both machines without any problem.
Any help to solve this would be very much appreciated

first of all, if you are behind a router firewall, and have your network secured (WPA2 and a long, non-dictionary password made up of letters and numbers), you don't need the software firewall on your Mac(s).
@ least turned if off for troubleshooting purposes.
turn home sharing off on both computers, and make sure
    (a) both Macs have access to the internet
    (b) iTunes on both machines is authorized for the same iTunes account.
turn home sharing back on on both Macs.
    does it work ?

  • Have MobileMe account, have 2008 iMac, have rosetta apps, have snow leopard, don't want Lion, have to have iCloud after June?

    Hello All,
I have a MBP running Lion and its fine. I have an iPhone 4, iPad, and a family pack MobileMe account. I have a 2008 iMac that has Final Cut Pro and several other rosetta apps. The iMac is running snow leopard and I don't have any issues to complain about. Since I will be forced to move to iCloud in June if I choose to keep my account I am trying to figure out how to procede with my iMac. I find it annoying that Apple is in a sense forcing MobileMe subscribers to purchase an OS update (Lion $69.00) or at worst a newer computer (Lion will not run on pre-core 2 duo) if we want to "sync" our devices and continue to pay for mobileme services. On top of that, by forcing people to update to Lion to get iCloud, they are forcing people to lose support for any rosetta applications that they have an investment in.
I know about the rosetta install on Lion trick - (installing rosetta on a Lion machine from a snow leopard disc). I was lucky to have a snow leopard disc, so I could install rosetta on my MBP to have support for Final Cut Pro 6.
So, is there any hope of sync services with snow leopard on my iMac while moving my family MobileMe account to iCloud? So far, there seems to be alot of problems with iCloud syncing from what I have read. So in order to keep everything in sync (contacts, iCal, mail, etc.) with iCloud on all my devices (iPhone, MBP, iMac) I will have to buy a Lion install drive for the iMac and re-install rosetta and re-install all those applications as well....
    Any thoughts ?

Consider running your Adobe and AppleWorks software in Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) installed in Parallels in Lion or Mt. Lion:

  • Time Machine: Missing Snow Leopard backups after Lion Upgrade.

I regulary use Time Machine for backups to my WD drive through my network.  After I upgraded to Lion I could not back up to my network drive   I learned through various forums that my WD drive required a firmware update, to work with Lion.  I upgraded the firmware and now  I no longer have my Time Machine backups from Snow Leopard, only backups from Lion, any idea how I can locate my Snow Leopard backups?

    Pondini wrote:
I'd be the first to agree that keeping two sets of backups, one a "clone," is prudent.
But if you have a Snow Leopard clone, then upgrade to Lion, the next time you update the clone you'll lose the Snow Leopard version entirely.
Yes, I was caught out early, so I have a selection of backup drives now to keep everything backed up as safely as possible. Although at the moment, I'm not seeing any reason to go back to Snow Leopard, and all my media is safe. Hopefully in the near future my SL backups can go and I can get ready for the next OS when it comes along.
    Thanks

  • Cannot access external NFS mounts under Snow Leopard

I was previously running Leopard (10.5.x) and automounted an Ubuntu (9.04 Jaunty) Linux NFS mount from my iMac. I had set this up with Directory Utility and it was instantly functional and I never had any issues. After upgrading to Snow Leopard, I set up the same mount point on the same machine (using Disk Utility now), without changing any of the export settings, and Disk Utility stated that the external server had responded and appeared to be working correctly. However, when attempting to access the share, I get a 'Operation not permitted' error. I also cannot manually create the NFS mount using mount or mount_nfs. I get a similar error if I try to cd into /net/<remote-machine>/<share>. I can see the shared folder in /net/<remote-machine>, but I cannot access it (cd, ls, etc). I can see on the Linux machine that the iMac has mounted the share (showmount -a), so the problem appears to be solely in the permissions. But I have not changed any of the permissions on the remote machine, and even then, they are blown wide open (777) so I'm not sure what is causing the issue. I have tried everything as both a regular user, and as root. Any thoughts?
    On the Linux NFS server:
    % cat /etc/exports
    /share 192.168.1.0/24(rw,sync,nosubtree_check,no_rootsquash)
    % showmount -a
    All mount points on <server>:
    192.168.1.100:/share <-- <server> address
    192.168.1.101:/share <-- iMac address
    On the iMac:
    % rpcinfo -t 192.168.1.100 nfs
program 100003 version 2 ready and waiting
program 100003 version 3 ready and waiting
program 100003 version 4 ready and waiting
    % mount
trigger on /net/<server>/share (autofs, automounted, nobrowse)
    % mount -t nfs 192.168.1.100:/share /Volumes/share1
    mount_nfs: /Volumes/share1: Operation not permitted

My guess is that the Linux server is refusing NFS requests coming from a non-reserved (<1024) source port. If that's the case, adding "insecure" to the Linux export options should get it working. (Note: requiring the use of reserved ports doesn't actually make things any more secure on most networks, so the name of the option is a bit misleading.)
If you were previously able to mount that same export from a Mac, you must have been specifying the "-o resvport" option and doing the mounts as root (via sudo or automount which happens to run as root). So that may be another fix.
