Any Difference In Quality Burning Via My Imac vs. Alesis Masterlink

Hey guys! I create my music with Logic 8 but was thinking about getting an external CD burner. Maybe an Alesis Masterlink to mixdown to instead of burning through my Imac burner. For some reason my song comes out sorta "small" and "narrow" even though it sounded great when i mixed it. Just thinking since the Masterlink has a Normalizing feature it would help my song overall.
What dither and bit rate should i be using in Logic?
How good is the Wave Burner program?

ManyToons wrote:
Hi, DR,
I wonder what the real difference is for burning a stereo bounce in a Superdrive compared to a Masterlink, per se.
If the Superdrive is in perfect working order you got the same result as your software can do... and Waveburner is perfect for burning Redbook standard audio CD... I never use Logic for burning CD because Waveburner is much better
The digital recording is not affected by problems such as analog recording...
I use an external Firewire case... I can change my CD burner every year (if needed) with a new one in order to always have the maximum CD recording quality!

PS: The Audio CD are not the best support for audio... it is a oldest technology... we are going to SuperCD with 24Bit resolution and surround features.. I personally prefer not to waste money on a technology almost obsolete, especially because you can replace the superdrive with a new one (total cost about 30 or 40 Dollars )

  • Is there any difference in quality between mp4 and m4v?

Is there any difference in quality between mp4 and m4v? I am figuring out how best to save old VCR files. Is the 264 category the best?

So, what would that software be? Anything that I mentioned, e.g., iMovie? Any Video Converter?
I'm a Mac user so I want files that play "natively" in QT X, QT 7, QL, iPod Touch, iPhone, iPad, and/or TV players. This means I want the H.264/AAC compressed data in MOV, MP4, or M4V file containers. I can use QT 7 Pro, MPEG Streamclip, and /or QT X to move MPEG-4/AAC compressed data to MOV file containers, MPEG Streamclip to movie M4V and MOV MPEG-4/AAC data to MP4 file containers, and Subler to move MP4 or MOV MPEG-4 AVC/AAC/AC3/Chapter data to M4V file containers. This is strictly a simple "copy" operation and no recompression of data is involved. (I.e., the quality is not changed.)
iMovie is a video editor and it forces an export conversion of your project once completed which can degrade quality. Have never used the Any Video Converter so I don't know if it has an audio and/or video "passthrough" feature for data already in a compatible compression formats. If it doesn't then any conversion it makes has the potential to degrade video content.
As to AVI, this is a legacy file container abandoned by Microsoft a dozen years ago in favor of their modernized WMV compression format/file type products. Compared to MKV, AVI is an outmoded/out-of-date container which I don't recommend you use unless you are a glutton for punishment. However, if you must use it, then you might try the AvidMux app. It can "copy" compatible content to a number of file container types—including AVI and MKV. Just don't blame me if its use creates more problems than it solves on current Mac systems.

  • Is there any difference in quality between different LCD replacement panels.

I have a Model 1260 15" macbook pro from early 2008.  Today a button popped off my shirt.  I randomly tossed it on the desk near my bed.  Later I went to close the laptop and... *CRACK* the button was sitting on the notebook just to the right of the magsafe adapter.  Now the 4 left most inches of my screen are just a series of vertical lines.  I'm wanting to hold out for the next big redesign before purchasing a new computer.   I'm really hoping next year's model will ditch the optical drive and either have a large SDD or a combo of SDD and HD.  In the mean time, I'd like to just replace the screen.  I looked at ifixit and a few youtube videos.  While the process looks tedious, it doesn't look particularly difficult as long as I'm careful.  There seem to be 3 brands, Samsung, LG-Phillips, and Chi-Mei.  There are also many sellers listing panels on ebay and I've messaged a few to ask what brand panels they are using.  Should I go for any one brand over the others?
    Thanks.
    -Kevin

First, don't hang onto the hope that next year's MBP won't have an optical drive; instead, you'd be advised to purchase a 2011 MacBook Air, which doesn't have an optical drive but relies on SDD. If you need a CD/DVD drive, you can get that separately, if you need. The latest Air has received better reviews than anything else in the Apple lineup.
I'm not an expert on the different brand of keys available. But you'll want to make sure the color is an exactly match to the model. Replacing thes keys is relatively inexpensive but tedious, you might do well to email sellers to guarantee the color and fit.
    Good luck with the repair!

  • PSD & PSB - 2files, same image, same size, same dpi, any difference?

    Hello Everyone
I need some help on just clarifying this:
    If i had a image:
    Size: 60mm x 80mm
    Dpi: 300
..with a photo of a flower or something
IF i save it as a PSD and another exact file but in PSB
would there be any difference in quality or resolution between the 2 files? (as in will it be blurry on one of them or vis versa?)
    Thanks in advance
    Darrel

The problems you are having are in part due to IDCS3 and in part due to Leopard. Do a search in this forum for "color printing InDesign".

  • Is there any difference in sound quality in streaming music over Airport Express in IMac, MacBook Pro and iPad?

I've noticed a difference in quality when streaming my iPad wirelessly to my Yamaha receiver and high quality speakers versus my Pro or iMac. The iPad sounds like a toy in comparison to the computers. I'd like some expert advice on what I should expect from the three mentioned devices when streaming wirelessly through a pretty good audio system. Like for instance, should there be much difference in sound quality between the Pro and the iMac?

  • Is there any difference between iMacs with Core i5 that come with Lion factory installed or not?

I bought two Imacs (2.5GHz Intel Core i5) recently, and asked for the latest model carrying Core i5. One came with Lion installed, and now that I unpack the second one, it has Mac OS X 10.6.7 installed. I want to make a complaint, but I don't know if I should only ask the dealer to install Lion on the machine, or to change the machine. Someone can tell me if there's any difference between the pre-customary-Lion installation models and previous ones? Is there any way to know certainly that two machines are exactly the same? Please, help.

I want to make a complaint
I wouldn't complain, I would be happy. Macs capable of running Snow Leopard are more valuable.
Your Snow Leopard Macintosh can always be upgraded to Lion later.  But many who have Lion want Snow Leopard, but this can be difficult.
You have the best of both worlds.
Just search this forum (or the Internet) for:  Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard.

  • If I bought an iMac from America would there be any differences/problems?

I live in Australia. If I bought an iMac from America would there be any differences/problems with me using it in Australia & connecting it to other Apple products (that were purchased in Australia)?

For that matter, you will receive cables which are incompatible with Australian electrical mains outlets.
Therefore, you will need a plug adapter.
You should also check with Customs for duties and import regulations and restrictions.
In my country, for example, all electrical devices imported from outside the EU are subject to duties and VAT and, if they are radios, TVs or any comparable device (and an internet-enabled PC is considered comparable), they must also be approved by the Department of Communications for compliance to radio frequency standards. In some rare cases, approval may be denied, most of the time it costs a very high fee.

  • Can't play any CD's or burn any either

I have looked for a similar question to mine but nothing fits exactly so here goes. I have had a problem burning cd's for some time and have turned the burn speed to the slowest. It starts to do the job, stops, spits my cd out which is then unusable and goes in the bin, hence I have stopped even trying!
Now it has got very awkward and will not play any cds I put in although it will play other people's burnt cds. They do not show on the bar or the desktop that they are in there or obviously in itunes. It then spits it out! I can play DVD's, and I can read disks with photos on but it wouldn't play the disk with the drivers on for my new printer. My son wants an ipod for Christmas which is now concerning me somewhat as itunes seems so unstable. I have downloaded the latest version but that didn't make any difference. Help anybody...please!!

Thanks for replying. I have tried with a different user account but that didn't make any difference. To be honest I don't even know how to look for 3rd party itunes plug-ins - and your other suggestion about other software but after having spent a lot of time looking at this yesterday I seem to be suffering the same problems as people who think they need a new superdrive. It's all getting a bit scary and I only want to play and burn cds!! Thanks again for responding.

  • Poor quality burn

I make a slide show in iPhoto and then export it to iDVD to burn it to a disk.  The result is not near the quality of the original slideshow.  What can I do to insure a high quality burn?
    Marilyn

    Hi
    Some thoughts about DVD Quality
    • DVD can only be SD-Video what ever tool used to encode it. And that is much less than what Your Mac screen can show.
    • Tools used to create the SlideShow - give a very different (quality) result
iMovie'08 to 11 - discard every second line = less resolution
iMovie HD6 and FinalCut - full interlaced video over to iDVD (as good as it can be)
FotoMagico™ _ Great and even more so if result is burned as a Blu-Ray Disk
Some notes follows - if You are of interest.
    DVD quality
    1. iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1)
iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality (movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST
    • Best Performances (movies + menus  less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6) (movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
    About double on DL DVDs.
    2. Video from
    • FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not self-containing, no conversion)
    • iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
    • iMovie’08 not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
    3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly eg x1 (in iDVD’08 or 09  this can also be set)
This can also be done with Apple’s Disk Utilities application.
    4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc).
    5. I use Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
    6. I use DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW)
    7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
    8. Don’t burn more than three DVD at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while before next batch.
    iDVD quality also depends on.
    • DVD is a standard in it self. It is Standard Definition Quality = Same as on old CRT-TV sets and can not
    deliver anything better that this.
HD-DVD was a short-lived standard and it was only a few Toshiba DVD-players that could playback.
These DVDs could be made in DVD-Studio Pro. But they don’t playback on any other standard DVD-layer.
Blu-Ray / BD can be coded onto DVDs but limited in time to - about 20-30 minutes and then need
    _ Roxio Toast™ 10 Pro incl. BD-component
_ BD disks and burner if full length movies are to be stored
_ BD-Player or PlayStation3 - to be able to playback
The BD-encoded DVDs can be play-backed IF Mac also have Roxio DVD-player tool. Not on any standard Mac or DVD-player
Full BD-disks needs a BD-player (in Mac) as they need blue-laser to be read. No red-laser can do this.
    • HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx. 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
    • How it was recorded - Tripod vs Handheld Camera. A stable picture will give a much higher quality
    • Audio is most often more critical than picture. Bad audio and with dropouts usually results in a non-viewed movie.
    • Use of Video-editor. iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not the tools for DVD-production. They discard every second line resulting in a close to VHS-tape quality.
iMovie 1 to HD6 and FinalCut any version delivers same quality as Camera record in = 100% to iDVD
    • What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
    • What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JES_Deinterlacer_3.2.2 do the conversion)
(Dropping a PAL movie into a NTSC iDVD project
(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS. They are play-backed by a Mac - then You need not to care
    • What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
    • How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD’08 or 09
Pro Quality (only in iDVD 08 & 09)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choice before Pro Quality)
    Yours Bengt W

  • Is there any difference between iPhotobooks and Aperturebooks

    Hello,
Can someone tell me if there is any difference in paperquality and covermaterials between iPhotobooks and books via Aperture.
I did receive my first iPhotobook: it looks good in printing and coulor, but the paper is a bit thin(cheap look). It feels the same as the paper in the books of our warehouse. Apart from the design options will the quality be better if I print it vias Aperture?
    Thanks for any comment

No, there is no difference. Instance name is the same as SID.

  • How do i burn dvd on iMac playable on pc?

how do i burn dvd on iMac playable on pc?

If you want to create a video DVD you'll need iDVD.  If you Mac didn't come with iDVD preinstalled then you'll have to purchase it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailier like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Software or eBay.com.  Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.

  • Any difference between distinct and aggregate function in sql query cost???

    Hi,
I have executed many sql stmts patterns- such as:
    a) using a single table
    b) using two tables, using simple joins or outer joins
but i have not noticed any difference in sql stmts in cost and in execution plan....
Anyway, my colleague insists on that using aggregate function is less costly compared to
distinct....(something i have not confirmed, that's why i beleive that they are exactly the same...)
For the above reffered 1st sql pattern.. we could for example use
    select distinct deptno
    from emp
    select count(*), deptno
    from emp
group by deptno select distinct owner, object_type from all_objects
select count(*), owner, object_type from all_objects
group by owner, object_typeHave you found any difference between the two ever...????
    Note: I use Ora DB 10g v2.
    Thank you,
    Sim

distinct and aggregate function are for different uses and may give same result but if u r using aggregate function to get distinct records, it will be expensive...

  • Matshita UJ826 - defective burns via iTunes

Over the past month I've noticed problems with CD media burned via iTunes or Toast. For multiple track playlist, the last song on the burned CD has static sounds. On single track CD's, a clicking sound is heard about half-way on the recording, which makes listening impossible.
At first I thought it was the Media (maxell CD-R 48x). So I switched to the more expense Taiyo Yuden brand. Still the problem occurs.
I don't have any problem importing songs into iTunes. Nor, do I notice a problem playing CD's via the drive. My sense tells me "hardware problem". Appreciate hearing about possible options to correct this situation.
    Thanks.

Reset my SuperDrive burn speed to 24x from Automatic. Seems to have solved my problem.

  • Is there any difference in importing movies to iMovie direct from memory card or first importing the movie to the hard drive?

Is there any difference in method:
    1) importing movies directly from memory card (class 10) to iMovie
    2) copying the content of the memory card to my hard drive and from there I import it to iMovie
I mean, is there any quality issues? The latter method is really much faster.

    No.
The copy of the card is a 'bit-identical clone' - no difference to the 'original'.
Plus a superb method to back-up originals....
I copy all my original recordings first onto some hard-drive - SDcards are much to 'fragile' in my experience....
