Any downside to installing Lion?

I am new to Mac (from PC) but am going on my 3rd MBP in my first month due to recieving 2 bad Macs out of the box! Must just be bad luck but still...
First was a track pad issue, second was due to a bad graphics card and hopefully my 3rd 15" MBP 7200rpm, 8GB RAM will be 'The One" but this will be Apple's last chance. If this one's not perfect I will return it and go back to PC.
Anyway, I will return this MBP (the one i'm typing on) as soon as my new one arrives in a couple of days and want to know since I have had such bad luck with my new Mac's so far, is there any reason not to upgrade to Lion right off the bat? Will there be any reason to wait till they get the "Bugs" out?
As I am completely new to the Mac OS I will be learning everything from new anyway so if the OS looks / acts differently it's no big deal.
Also, if / when i do upgrade ot Lion, are there any tips you have for me in regards to this process? As I will not have anything on my new MBP should i upgrade before i run the Time Machine backup or do the upgrade after I have everything installed on my new Mac?
Thanks, I look forward to your reply.
Rich

Whether you install Lion or not is a decision you make based on whether you have a need for the new features in Lion and if all your essential software will be compatible with Lion.
As for upgrading:
How to Install Lion Successfully - You must have Snow Leopard 10.6.7 or 10.6.8 Installed
A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.3.) if DW cannot fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall Snow Leopard.
B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the backup volume. Source means the internal startup volume.
C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
D. To upgrade to Lion:
Purchase the Lion Installer from the Mac App Store. The download will start quickly. Lion is nearly 4 GBs so a fast internet connection is essential. Download time could run upwards of 4 hours depending upon network conditions and server demands at the time.
Boot From The Lion Installer which is located in your Applications folder.
Follow instructions for installation.

  • Are you guys facing any prolems after installing Lion OS on macbook pro?

The cross tab for closing a tab on safari vanishes from the tab when I look to close it. Windows are hanging more often too. I am facing these issues since I installed Lion OS.

Leave your machine plugged in overnight so that your MBP can re-index your files. As with any install, do a Permissions run afterwards...and came back here with your results. I'd like to know what happened.

  • Any alternative to install Lion Directly on Mac with Leopard? .. We dont have Snow Leopard in Stores now..

I am looking for an alternative to install Lion OS on my Macbook pro running with Leopard... I checked in Stores they dont have Snow Leopard disks anymore... its a zombiee Apple had made me struck... also it dont make sense to buy Snow Leopard  for Lion upgrade, which I may not be using..
If apple has to earn they can charge me bit more bucks... but this is total nonsense to make a OS dependent on previous version...I never saw Microsoft, Red Hat, IBM, Sun doing all this for there different environments..
    Please suggest an alternative.

You can buy the USB Stick version of Lion http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD256?mco=MjQ1MzkyMDY you won't need to update to Snow Leopard with this version.

  • I get an error when I try to print after installing Lion - worked under Snow Leopard - /System/Library/Printers/Libraries/PrintJobMgr/Contents/MacOS/PrintJobMgr failed

I have not been able to print pictures nor any text since installing Lion.  I receive the message in the subject which is totally meaningless.

When you upgrade from a previous OS there is always a chance that you will bring some setting that is not compatible with the new OS. This can be the driver as noondaywitch suggests but it can also be the core printing system. In the case of the latter, it is a good idea to reset the printing system when a core error occurs. Note that the reset sets the printing system back to default and removes your currently installed printer and scanner queues. But it does not remove the supporting drivers, so you only need to install the driver again.
How to Reset the Printing System
    1. Open System Preferences > Print & Scan/Fax
    2. Move your mouse over the Printers list
    3. Hold down the Control button and click the mouse
    4. Click the "Reset printing system ..." popup
    5. Restart your Mac
Just one additional thing to note. In checking the supported printer list for 10.6 from Apple, your RC545 is not listed so running the Software Update will not provide you with a driver for this printer. So if Epson does not have a driver for 10.6, and it appears that Apple does not provide one, then what you have already from the previous installation is it. And if this doesn't work, then you may have to look at either an alternate driver or getting another printer. But let's wait and see what happens after the reset.

  • Is it possible to install Lion on a new MBP (non-retina)?

From what I can conclude, there doesn't seem to be any way to install Lion on a brand new MBP with Mountain Lion pre-installed (purchased today). I have the Lion installer but only for a MacPro, so presumably that won't work. Has anyone found a way to do this?

While it's probably unlikely to work, if you can find someone with the same generation MBP that shipped with Lion you can have them install Lion to an empty external drive and you can try booting from that. You will need the specific version of Lion to these system that cannot be downloaded from the App Store and currently must be installed from an Internet Recovery. If you can boot then you should be able to clone that to your internal drive and be on your merry way.
There is a little crossover where systems that shipped with ML will in fact boot Lion depending on when they were actually manufactured. Hopefully yours is one of them.

  • Can't Install Lion on 2nd device

I have bought the new MacBook Air which comes pre-installed with Lion.
I also have an old MacBook that runs Snow Leapard most up-to-date version.
    Scenario:
The App Store on the new MBA shows "Installed" for Lion
The App Store on the old MB shows "buy" for Lion
The App Store on both the old and new computers do not show Lion in the Purchases section.
Both app stores are connected to the same apple id/account.
I understand that by buying Lion, you are allowed to download&install it on all your authorized devices.
Why don't I see "Install" for Lion on the old MB?? :/
    Thanks!

You didn't buy Lion, though, it came with your machine.  And though the license for Lion purchased through the App Store lets you install on more than one machine, I'm not sure that the same is true for Lion pre-installed on a new machine.  I would advise you to contact Apple about this issue...  or just bite the bullet and spend the $30.
Did your new machine come with a disk of any kind for installing Lion?  If not, you will probably want to either purchase Lion online and use the installer to create a Lion boot disk or wait until Apple releases the $70 flash drive containing Lion sometime this month.

  • Installing Lion over Mountain Lion-Is this possible?

I have a MacBookAir5,2 model with Mountain Lion pre-installed. However, we are using Lion in our environment. I tried booting off of a Lion cd a I received a circle with a slash running through it. Is there any way to install Lion on MacBook Air models with Mountain Lion pre-installed?
    Thanks.

I know this sounds like a stupid question, but we really only have one Macbook Air with lion preinstalled. So, would I need to install lion on to an external using another Macbook Air with similar drivers? Does it matter if I install lion on to the external using a macbook pro instead of an air? How would I go about doing that? Thanks.

  • Installed LION, cannot open mac app, ichat, and pages doesn't open any kind of documents.

after installing lion, mac app and ichat works perfectly fine, the next day, it doesnt open anymore. it just bounces in the dock and crashes. i think some apps do the same, tried pages for the 1st time and it doesnt open any types of documents. its kinda frustrating. anyone have any ideas?
    Lion, the worlds best OS?

I'm having a similar problem with Pages I just purchased in the App Store. I can have only one doc open at a time--otherwise, it just ignores either keystroke or cursor direction to open a new window or open an existing file. This is wasting my time! I'm a writer...I need to be able to have multiple files open in Pages at once!

so i installed lion on my friends macbook pro and it didn't let me log into his personal username like after you turn it on it just hilghts his name and the bar to type in his password doesn't show you. so what i was thing is to back up his personal hard drive and restoring it and try to reinstall lion.. from a momory stick that i have put lion on as my personal copy. any way on doing it better or how to restore the mac and be able to reinstall lion plz help.

    Chuck
Without knowing what exactly has gone wrong it is difficult to be precise, but it sounds a bit like you are attempting to install YOUR copy of Lion on your friend's machine?
I'm not sure the licence allows you to do that.
IF you are attempting to install a legitimate copy of Lion on his machine, then I would suggest you try again. That sometimes works.
Do you / he have a backup?
Have you tried starting from the recovery disk and repairing the hard drive etc.?

  • Did I miss something in the fine print? I installed Lion and and come to find out, I can no longer open any Word documents or Excel spreadsheets as they are no longer supported (being PowerPC apps).  Seriously?!?!?!?!!   What are my alternatives?

Did I miss something in the fine print? I installed Lion and and come to find out, I can no longer open any Word documents or Excel spreadsheets as they are no longer supported (apparently because they are PowerPC apps).  Seriously?!?!?!?!!   What are my alternatives?

    Hi Mary and Matthew
You might find it helpful to "try before you buy" - there is a 30 day free trial offer for Office for Mac 2011, accessible from M's .com website.
You may be able to use this period to open and resave your old documents in a format that enables you to switch instead to using Apple's iWorks apps moving forward.
I initially intended to do something similar, but ended up buying Office as it provided an easier way (for me, at least) to continue working with years worth of old emails, letters, spreadsheets and other documents (from my PC days) without risking damage to their integrity, formatting, etc.

  • After installing lion to my imac (spring 2011) i can no longer use the pre-packed DVD of snow leopard to reinstall snow lopard...any help please?

i Installed Lion from the app store so i have no hard copy. i have my dvd from when i was sold the imac which when i try to boot it (with or without lion on the hard drive) it gives me loud beeps. apple only need a clone of a previous install of snow leopard, when surely it'd be easier to patch lion or efi to allow this or at least provide me with a disk or dongle in placement of mu digital download!
if my computer goes down tomorrow im reliant on an app store download to regain lion.....which will requiere snow leopard, i dont think ill be purchasing mountain lion if its gonna mess with my mac without warning thats for sure
    any help would be appreciated

  • Any ideas on how I install Lion on a new hard drive

Any ideas on how I might install Lion on a new hard drive when I purchased the OS online from Apple prior to my hard drive failing?       I don't have a disk.

when you install your new drive, what happens? it should boot into internet recovery and you setup from there.
    does it not do that?
here is an article about how to force internet recover http://www.cultofmac.com/106669/force-lion-to-start-internet-recovery-on-your-20 11-or-later-mac-os-x-tips/
here is apple literature about the recovery partition (if you had a hard drive) http://www.apple.com/osx/recovery/
here is a do it yourself downloader that makes a usb stick the recovery disk. If you have data on the usb drive I would back it up, as this will erase everything else on the thumb drive. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1433

  • Since I have installed Lion onto my iMac it's impossible to to copy any video file from the mac to an external support (ups-stick, Timecapsule). What's happened? What can I do?

Since I have installed Lion onto my iMac it's impossible to to copy any video file from the mac to an external support (ups-stick, Timecapsule). What's happened? What can I do?

If you just did upgrade Lion, give it some time. I recall having similar problems and some articles mention heavy background work after install - such as re-indexing for Spotlight etc. I couldn't even copy from folder to folder or e.g. iphoto to folder on the same disk. Went away after a day or two though.
I do however still have a problem with AFP access to one of the lion machines - kills it's network adaptors rather quickly. No luck solving this so far :|
