Any experience/suggestions with Oracle on Sun Storagetek 2540 SAN via NFS?

Hi,
Currently Oracle 11g is up and running on local drives. And we intend to move it off to Sun Storagetek 2540 SAN with Sun server 4140 (as NFS server) via NFS. So as far as the database server is concerned, it'd be NFS mount to the NFS server.
There's a new feature in Oracle 11g, Direct NFS Client, which is supposed to be more effective and more efficient than relying on O/S handling of NFS protocol. But in the white paper, it ONLY mentioned about NFS NAS scenario, not SAN. But I think it'd work with SAN as well, because as far as the database server is concerned, it's communicating to NFS server via NFS protocol. What do you think? Any experience/suggestions?
In terms of Storagetek 2540 SAN support, the Oracle's official answer would be "it's not supported unless the storage vendor and the storage device are listed in the Oracle Storage Compatibility Program list..." However, OSCP has been discommissioned in 1/2007, and Storagetek 2540 was introduced AFTER the date.
I think it MIGHT work given it's Sun/Oracle alliance.
What do you think?
Input/suggestion is appreciated,
Helen

My 3 year old linux installtion on my laptop, which is my NFS client most of the time uses udp as default (kernel 2.4.19).
Anyway the key is that the NFS client, or better, the RPC implementation on the client is intelligent enough to detect a failed TCP connection and tries to reestablish it with the same IP address. Now once the cluster has failed over the logical IP the reconnect will be successful and NFS traffic continues as if nothing bad had happened. This only(!) works if the NFS mount was done with the "hard" option. Only this makes the client retry the connection.
Other "dumb" TCP based applications might not retry and thus would need manual intervention.
Regarding UFS or PxFS, it does not make a difference. NFS does not know the difference. It shares a mount point.
Hope that helped.

  • Any experience mixing with VRM box and Logic?

I was interested in anyone's experience using Focusrite's VRM box and Logic.

Someone mentioned the BSF2000. I have the same and it is very useful.
In the default BSF mode there is no feedback into the sliders (they don't move with existing automation), however you can send up to 117 CCs, PCs and some other kinds of data on each preset from up to 16 MIDI chanels and Logic picks them all up with no problems.
However, you can start the BCF 2000 in Logic Control mode, (for those who have BCF 2000 and haven't seen this option yet, swith off the BCF 2000, then swith on holding down the 3rd upper button– the one just below the Parameter rotary controller. When you start the display will show LC instead of bC. To return to BCF mode, restart holding the 1st upper button, the one just below the Type rotary control.) install the Logic control driver in Logic and you have feedback into the faders and rotary controls. The downside of the Logic Control mode is that is doesn't have instructions and I've spent days trying to work out what all the presets are.
Remeber too in BCF2000 mode you can not only use the controls to manage automation of ANY midi parameter, but you can also use them to replace keystroke shortcuts. eg I have one button that toggles all tracks between latch and read, another that moves through screen sets another that shows and hides global tracks etc.
    Well worth every penny.

  • Anybody have any experience working with full color Yellow Pages ads?

I designed a full color ad for our business in InDesign for the yellow pages. I send them a PDF and they send a proof back with a bunch of stuff screwed up. I talked to our rep and she sent me a PDF showing all the file requirements. First off, they want me to be using Illustrator to build the ad. I don't use Illustrator for typesetting. Also, they do not accept PDF files, only EPS files from Illustrator.
So.. I'm trying to find a workaround. They want all fonts converted to outlines.. so I'm in InDesign doing that, but a lot of my text has fairly thick strokes on it and when I convert that text to outlines, it completely screws up the text because of the stroke. Any idea how to get around that??

I had the same problem with NO PDF when placing our yellow page ad (and yes, we get more responses of "we found you in the yellow pages" than any of our online ads so we keep up with it).
I ended up designing in ID, exporting EPS, opening in Illy and resaving as the illustrator eps version they required.
Your font out-line problem is hard to work around, and why I try not to use strokes on text that will be converted to paths. The work around is to break the compound path, use pathfinder to punch the appropriate "holes" back where the belong in the type (technical word is escaping me, it's the end of the day)and then re-apply the path. The wonkiness happens because when you convert-to-path the interior shapes of the font become separate, and therefore an outlines applied to the outside, for example, is now on the wrong side in context of the font shape.
I'm explaining that very poorly. Hopefully you catch my meaning.

  • Any Experience/Alternatives with security, FALSE, if using iFrames 2 link directly 2 ShopProducts?

Hi, i have an (older) shop-account but the layout and the options to change are poor, ( it's a Modular web host for shop - there is no FTP access :-(
So now my idea is -  just from the designer-thinking - to link from a new page (same client but different host and server ) with via iFrane directly to the poducts of the shop
( one step before the cart)  I tested it and it feels looks good - so it feels you don't change the the domain.
But - its a lot of products and a lot of work --- and before i start to I want to be sure, which is may wrong, where can be a problem?
From the technical, safety, seo or any other point of view, i have now idea which problems can come to me?
No no, I don't wnat a problem, it is the only code i know , if there is a Probelm with Iframes , i have a big problem , too. Because missing any alternatives ;-/
I'm fairly new working with webdesign, but always read in older oldschool HTML forums, iFrames have a bad reputation. But why?
and if , do i have any alternatives to do???  and  is it also working with  Muse?
thanks a lot for your time and for every idea ;-)

Thank you for your helpful Summary.
very Interesting, you even mean it's a little helpful for the Seo.
So I don't see real problems with Iframes, too.
BUT I'm not deep into it and because the disliked image, i was a bit afraid about a missing knowledge, may some browser ignore iframes,
W3C or any other Internet-organization plans to ban it :-) Or whatever, which could have a massive negative impact for the shop.
The url redirection to a shop is for sure a bit confusing, But i can't change it, it is another site from another host, a special  safy shop system and already build and ready.  ( business catalyst is just for testing, but i know what you mean and in long-term planning )
so that#s why I thought, that iframes are a nice and a elegant solution for a uniform appearance. And if we're pointing that the customer is entering another safer Place for buying and for their own safety   -  i even think it's not particularly unusual. - But if a problem it's not an IFrame problem.
So even if i buy at the german apple store, (de) suddenly i have to speak english and to pay in $ , this is for real a bit scarry ...
    But I#m not apple ;-))

  • Oracle recommend configuring a Sun StorageTek 6140 with 15 hard disks

    Hi,
How would Oracle recommend configuring a Sun StorageTek 6140 with 15 hard disks for optimal use with multiple Solaris servers running Oracle instances connected via a SAN? Should the storage array be configured as a single RAID 5 device and then LUNs created for the different servers? Or should each Oracle instance have its own dedicated hard disks?
Also might we see better performance if we used Solid State Devices for the ZFS Intent Log (ZIL) and/or L2ARC on ZFS, instead of using the UFS file system straight to the SAN?
    Regards
    NM

I don't think Oracle would recommended any particular way. I would consider the following, but your mileage may vary, so testing is very important.
    Raid 1 (10) for logs
    RAID5 for Tables
But if you have many servers access the same LUN's/VDISKS then contention may be a problem. Maybe consider consolidating all you servers to a single Oracle Server.( For protection a second server with Oracle Solaris Cluster)
ASM is the best method for managing disks and data placement. But if like to see files/directories then go for UFS with direct I/O enabled. ZFS is fantastic if you want to use Snapshot/clones/Compression, etc.. but I think UFS is faster.
As for cache, Oracle 11gR2 has support for storing objects specifically in FLASH, so look to use the Sun F20 card with 96Gb of flash.

    Srikanth,
I suggest that you have a look at DataDirect SequeLink JDBC driver. It has
    been certified with Oracle 8i R1 (8.1.5), R2 (8.1.6) and R3 (8.1.7) on
    HP-UX.

  • OIM Integration with Oracle Retek -- Suggestions / Prior Experience ?

    Hello,
We are looking to integrate OIM with Retek suite for user management (Automated Provisioning / Termination etc).
Has anyone done this before ? Is DB connector feasible option ? Any whitepapers ?
    Thanks,

'Oracle Identity MANAGEMENT' is a high level view of the digital lifecycle and is a suite of Identity Management products from Oracle. There is a product 'Oracle Identity MANAGER' which is primarily a provisioning tool. Its confusing and misleading when people refer both as OIM.
In order to synch/integrate Oracle Internet Directory (OID) and Active Directory (AD), or OID and any 3rd party directory, we need not install Oracle Identity Manager. During the installation of OID, it'll guide you to install Oracle Application Server Infrastructure.

  • We currently have 3 iPad minis in our household.  We are experience difficulty with charging them.  I have replaced several USB cords which all have stopped working...it's frustrating.  Any suggestions?

Looking for suggestions with the iPad mini charger

The iPad mini came with a 5watt charger I would try the 10wat or 12 watt charger which can buy online or goto the apple store.using 2nd party cords  or chargers is not always the best option they can cause lots of problems it pays to use genuine apple products and if u do have a problem u can always send them back and get a replacement free of charge.

  • SAP Performance Problem with Oracle 10 on Sun SPARC T5240 server

    Dear Friends,
We have a performance problem after migrating our SAP ERP 6.0 basis system. We moved to new servers a month ago.
According to SAP EarlyWatchAlert Report, CPU response time is too high, altough CPU utilization is never more than 5%,
    The current system is :
    Database server : Sun SPARC Enterprise T5240 Server - 2 CPU´s with 6 core, 8 thread, 1.2 Ghz 32 GB RAM
and we use another identical configured server as an application server.
Database is Oracle 10.2.0 and operating system is Solaris 10.
The problem is average CPU response time is 450 ms, and max. CPU load is %5 percent.
Pre-migration configuration with old servers, we had CPU response : 150 ms and max CPU load: 50%.
    Old configuration : 2 X HP rp3440, 2 X PA 8800 CPU (2 core, 1.0 GHz).
Have you got any experience with a similar situation, which setting might be wrong for not fully utilizing server CPU´s?
or do you know any similar configuration for benchmark?
    Thanks in advance
    Uzan

Our organization upgraded an application - The vendor had originally suggested a T2000. When we finally migrated onto it, the performance was worse than the older version of the application. The vendor hadn't yet tested the combination of T2000 and 10.2 with their application when they had made that hardware recommendation, they subsequently revised their recommendations. We ended up with an M4000.
The application performance, IMHO, still stinks. But that's because it's a java based application written for database independence.
The interesting item to note here, is that in the application teams 'selective' testing - everything worked fine. When the testing was extended to include users who didn't follow the 'test plan', they found performance begin to tank. Then with more users, more testing, they found that the T2000 was not going to perform well. The test plan by the apps team was not sufficient to find the issues, and they did not include any load testing!

  • On Sun fire v490 - Solaris 10 with Oracle 8.1.7.4 & Sybase 12.0

    Hi,
We are going to upgrade our server with this configuration -
Sun Fire V490     2 x 1.05 GHz UltraSPARC IV CPU
    8096MB RAM     2 x73GB local disk
    2x FC 2GB Sun/QLogic HBAs
    DAT72
On one machine we will have Sun Solaris v10 with
Oracle DB v8.1.7.4 & Second one will be Sun Solaris v10 with Sybase DB v12.0.0.6.
Now our question is - Sun fire have Hyper-thread CPUs will the O/S and databases (Oracle and Sybase) view the proposed system as a true 4 CPU platform? Will parameters used to tune the database such as Sybase max online engines still operate in the same manner as before?
    Our old machine configuration was - Sun E450     4x400MHz CPU     1024MB RAM     2 x18; 8x36GB disks

Questions on Oracle and Sybase should be directed to a database forum, this forum is for Sun hardware support.
Here is a link to a DB forum I look at from time to time:
    http://www.dbforums.com/index.php
The topic of tuning Oracle or Solaris is way beyond the scope of this forum, I have attempted to go into it before but didn't get any feedback and I would only like to spend lots of time on it if I was being paid!!! On the memory side, keep in mind that Oracle 9i 64-bit can address a maximum of 2 ^ 64 ( 16777216 TB ) memory, prior to that the DBA had to define memory parameters in init.ora. To be honest the last time I worked with a Oracle 8 database I shut a HP K class server down permanently that had been migrated to Oracle 9i on Solaris by an Oracle consultant and I can't remember all the tuning trick etc.

  • 2.5" external enclosure (bus powered) any thoughts, experience, suggestions

I'm about to purchase a bigger hard drive for my macbook, I thought I could put the old one in an external enclosure that's bus powered, any experience with that ? I'm thinking about the Bytecc BT-280SATA but couldn't find it here in Quebec, Canada. Also saw the OWC Mercury on the go, but I find the pricetag a tad high at 90 bucks for an enclosure, couldn't find another SATA notebook drive enclosure that's bus powered though, I'd like to hear suggestion.
Would also appreciate a suggestion of where to purchase one of these enclosures in Canada.
    Thanks, Francis.

You are rightm the price is a little high, but there are not a ton of choices when it comes to a SATA/FW enclosure.
TransINTL.com has one, but it is even more at $99.

    Hi,
Many installs the Oracle database is situated on a separate server than the hyperion install, it is quite common.
As long as there is a good link between the machines you should be fine.

I've been able to get Apache_1.3.(9|11|12)+PHP-(3.0.1[45]|4.0b4pl1)+Oracle-8.1.5.0.2 to work (OCI8 API calls) but with much difficulty.
Compiling was pretty straightforward. I used APXS to load the PHP module. However, when I start Apache with the PHP modules loaded and added, Apache would die (no hints, etc.) What I did was start Apache without PHP loaded, reconfigure in PHP once Apache started and THEN restart apache. This works for me. Kinda tedious, though. And the time when Apache is running without support for PHP would allow anyone to see my PHP code with my database password.
(Incidentally, how should I configure Apache so it doesn't serve files which end in .php[3] unless it was through the PHP module?)
I've emailed the Apache OCI8 module developers about it (Stig and Thies) so I hope it'll be resolved soon.
