Any experience with UPnP not working in Java 6 after 10.6.2 update?

I'm having a problem with a Java application. It opens a multicast socket and tries to send data (which I can see go out over the wire by running wireshark) but the reply that comes back is never delivered to the application.
This software worked under 10.6.1. Also, similar UPnP port-mapping software written in C works (the Transmission bit torrent client, for example) so I don't think it's the underlying TCP/IP stack but the Java stub that interfaces to the network stack.
I'd like to know if anyone else is seeing the same problem? The error message is usually IOException: no route to host although I've seen others (which I think are artifacts of the same problem).
ADVthanksANCE.

That wasn't very helpful.
I'm the developer.
I've been single-stepping the library code and I find that after creating the java.net.MulticastSocket object I get the IOException when I try to do a receive() on that socket.
As I said, this is code that worked prior to the latest SL update. I guess I can go back and download the 10.6.1 update and install it to see if the behavior reverts back, but Apple fixed a bunch of things in the 10.6.2 Java update so I'm first looking for confirmation that there's a problem.
Anyone else have any comments?

  • Firefox 4 does not work on my G5. After prompting me to update from previous version I am now left with nothing functioning. How do I go back?

After downloading the latest update Firefox kindly told me I should upgrade to V4. So I did. I downloaded it, dropped it into my applications folder and overwrote the old version. Only to be told when attempting to start the application "Firefox does not work with this architecture".
Brilliant. So I look for an older version on the site, and there is nothing to be found. Just the insistance that I should download version 4 for my Mac. Well, "IT DOESN"T WORK GUYS!"
Now can we have a fix please quickly or a link to the older version, as I am now left without all my bookmarks or passwords and you are about to effectively isolate a section of the computing community from ever using you again.

For your toolbars that you had installed before, are they simply incompatible with the latest version of Firefox?
Please try reading [[Add-ons are disabled after updating Firefox|Add-ons are disabled after updating Firefox]], as that may help with your addons.
As for Firefox running slow, is it slow lading web pages, or is just the whole browser slow? Try reading [[Firefox is slow|Firefox is slow]] , which may have some tips (the optimize Windows part especially).

  • Notes app not working properly on 3GS after 4.2.1 update

The Notes app no longer works properly on iPhone 3GS after update to iOS 4.2.1 the other day.
Now when in Notes app, found that I went into a Note, edited it and then couldn't leave it - the navigation has disappeared, so cant get out of the note back to the list. Only way out of the note is to press the Home button and exit Notes.

Wow...I also just noticed I have songs that also are not showing up. Should I just do a restore?

  • I am getting frustrated with Apple not working with Flash player on some of my favorite web sites. Is there any alternative that will work on I-pad instead of flash?

I am getting frustrated with Apple not working with Flash Player on some of my favorite web sites! Is there another alternative to watching these site options on my I-pad?

Flash is not, and probably never will be, supported on the iPad : http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughts-on-flash/ . Plus it would be up to Adobe to make a version of their flash player that works on iOS devices - something which they have never managed to do and which they have now given up on trying to do.
Browser apps such as Skyfire, iSwifter and Puffin 'work' on some sites, but judging by their reviews not all sites. Also some websites, especially news sites, have their own apps in the App Store, so your could try checking there for your sites (and there is the built-in YouTube app).

  • BAPI not working in Java Webdynpro

    Hi,
My BAPI from SAP is working in Netweaver perfectly, but when I call the same with the equal parameters in Java webdynpro, no results.
    I'm using following function: 'CVAPI_DOC_VIEW'.
Any idea why the BAPI is not working in Java Webdynpro?
    Regards,
    Tim

    Hi Tim,
AFAIK 'CVAPI_DOC_VIEW'  will work only in standard SAP Dynpro. Inside Webdynpro it is forbidden to save files in the background and using GUI class with execute, so you cannot use that Standard FM.
    Check this thread .

  • Any experience with coolbook?

Does anyone have any experience with coolbook on the Macbook unibody? I am constantly running mine with one proc full out for hours on end and noticed that the CPU is at 80 C and the fans are at about 2.5k, so I figure if I could under volt a little I could get the CPU temp down a little. Pushing the fans up seems like a bad idea to me because that ages them faster.
Also, the idea of being able to keep the processor's speed down when I am not plugged in sounds good to be because I am almost never doing anything that I care to do quickly.
Also, does anyone have an experience with coolbook and apple care? i.e. getting heck from Apple b/c it was installed?

    Hi Paul Bailey,
I just bought Coolbook for my 15' Macbook Pro Unibody (2.4ghz) yesterday. I recently asked your very question about Coolbook and warranty / AppleCare and the response I received from iVmichael was that it would be fine (thread visible here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10132068&#10132068 ). I read the Coolbook instructions yesterday and it said that Coolbook couldn't damage your processor. I did some experimenting with it and even putting the highest speed at the lowest voltage it would let me use on Coolbook only resulted in a kernel panic which just told me to turn the computer off, which I did. When I turned it back on, there were no problems at all so I don't think you'll run into problems with Coolbook or at the very least, that's been my experience.
I played around with the voltages a bit however I found that for most things I do, it didn't make a noticeable difference. I mostly just use my Macbook Pro for web browsing and email, which are already very well handled at cool temperatures by Apple.
I think the one thing to keep in mind is that even if by lowering the processor speed you're able to use less power through undervolting, you'll then end up with the processor working more time (eg. 2.4ghz processor will finish an encoding job much faster than a 1.8ghz processor) and that higher speed processor might actually end up being a better fit because once it finishes the demanding tasks, it'll underclock itself while the slower Coolbook-enabled processor is still working at most likely a higher frequency + voltage.
From what I've read, everyone's Macbook Pro will have different results with Coolbook, as some of the Intel chips are willing to run (and be stable) at lower voltages than others, so some people will get more (or less) benefit than I experienced. I was able to get mine to run at 2.4ghz while using 1.0625 volts instead of the default of 1.1375 volts, so my CPU is running about 7% more power efficiently now. I had similar power efficiency improvements experimenting with different speed/voltage combinations. One thing to watch when lowering voltages is that some people have experienced a Core getting disabled (because not enough power is flowing to keep both enabled). If lowering the voltage causes this, you might find your Macbook Pro getting hotter instead of cooler, especially if doing anything that on one CPU causes it to constantly work at it's maximum performance.
I'm not sure how much of a difference +7% CPU power efficiency would make in battery life, however mine seems to run about 2-3 degrees Celsius cooler which is nice, although it wasn't bothering me at the higher temperature. What I've heard mentioned in other threads on the Apple Discussion forums is that a cooler running Macbook Pro's battery should be able to go through more charging cycles than a warmer running one because of the effect heat has on the duration of a battery's life, so that's another definite plus.
For battery life, you should get a pretty good extension (better than Coolbook) by lowering the Macbook Pro's LCD/LED brightness to the minimum or as low as you can tolerate if you aren't doing that already. I've heard that even not having the keys backlit when on battery power can add about 45 minutes to battery life as well. For the $10 Coolbook costs, it's worth it in my opinion.
As for experimenting with fan speed, I definitely think it's a bad idea to have the fan running at max speed or ramping it up substantially over the default Apple settings. Like you said, it'll make the fan age faster and I've heard replacement fans aren't all that cheap (especially when you factor in labor). I really wouldn't know the answer to this, so I'm just speculating, however I personally would see fan failure resultant from smcfancontrol (or another fan speed program) as the Macbook Pro owner's fault and clearly not the fault of Apple if the fan were to fail because it's being used for extended periods of time at substantially higher speeds than it was intended to run at. I've seen some people say it wouldn't affect the warranty, however I think it's best that you contact AppleCare directly and ask just to be safe if this is something you're considering doing -- I haven't managed to come across an official answer from Apple.
What I think is a good idea would be to increase the minimum fan speed a bit. My Macbook Pro fans usually run at around 2000rpm, so by increasing the fan speed to 2200rpm, I make it run a bit cooler while presumably not doing much to shorten fan lifespan. I may perhaps even be increasing fan lifespan as it now takes longer before the fans need to run at a higher rpm because they're doing a better job at keeping the Macbook Pro running within it's designed thermal envelope.

  • Any experience with media players to play HD content created in FCP

    hi
I have an HD video that was shot and edited in FCP, it will be projected using HD projector via HDMI.
i am looking for a media player that is able to play HD content as I am not so pleased with the low bit-rate of DVD's and cant burn blu-ray yet.
i don't want to compromise the high quality that i've worked so hard to achieve when i compress to dvd...
any experience with the various media players that are in the market ? last time i've checked "tvix" can play h264 content but cant play uncompressed...
    suggestions ?

  • Anybody have any experience with JPad Pro ?

I have just now downloaded JPad Pro version 5.0 from the web site www.modelworks.com
Does anybody have any experience with JPad Pro? I would appreciate if people who have worked using JPad pro give me thier opinions about it.
    Thanks.
    Vijay

I have never used it...I find jEdit to be valuable to me...mainly for the syntax highlighting..
My first 2 yrs' coding was spent with "notepad" and or "vi" (text editors) and command line javac...
I am of two minds as to whether to recommend this approach for everyone...I feel closer to the code I write in a notepad...but often times I missed things like "boolian" instead of "boolean" ... things that syntax highlighting assist you with... and unclosed brackets...which when you use an editor like jEdit (or I imagine jPad pro) you can catch easier, due to the auto-indentation.. Searching for these bugs teaches you little other than to be careful while typing :-)
I still run "javac" from the command line ... I think jEdit has a way for me to call it from the GUI..but I've never used it.
If it feels right to you..it is not wrong...the only thing I will NEVER use is a code-writing abomination... some people (even advanced users, and I will not say that they are pansies) use them.. In anything but expert hands, they are catastrophically dangerous.
The risk for code-writing IDEs is that you didn't write it, and there is an extra (un-needeed) level of abstraction from the code, one more level of complexity, that is a blockade to truly understanding the code and improving/maintaining it....

  • Any experience with DDR2 RAM from Legacy Electronics (PowerMac G5 Quad) ? ?

hi, I´m looking into upgrading my PowerMac G5 Quad with 8GB RAM DDR2(4x2GB), and came across a kit from Legacy Electronics for $740 (w/lifetime warranty). I already have 8GB from OWC installed, but they want $1100 for another 8GB..
Anyone had any experience with RAM from Legacy Electronics ? The price on this kit seems almost to good to be true.. is this crap ?
    Here´s the specs :
    8Gb (4x2048Mb) Memory Kit
    DDR2-533
    PC2-4200
    Dual-Channel
    Matched Pair
    Lifetime Warranty
30 days Money Back Satisfaction Guarantee
Guaranteed Compatible with Apple PowerMac G5 (DDR2 / Dual-Core models only!)
    Any input is highly appreciated.
    THANKS!

    B?rre S?thre-
That is an amazing price. I have no experience with Legacy Electronics. If it has a lifetime warranty that should help, but if it is the kind of company that won't be around in 6 months it really doesn't matter.
As I am sure that you know, most issues with RAM (once it is known good and working) come from subsequent OSX updates. The warranty should help with that should it not work in the future.
    Lemme know if it works.
    Luck-

  • 5300 RAM showing up as 3200 in Quad, any experience with this problem?

Hello, just received a 2 gig kit for my G5 Quad (2 - 1 gig sticks from Crucial). System Profiler shows it's speed at 3200, lower than the original 512 RAM which is 4200. Crucial says it will only reach 4200, but why is the new RAM showing up at 3200? Tried removing original RAM and only using the new, same speed displayed - 3200.
Has anyone had any experience with this oddity? Any idea if the RAM is not performing or the Mac is not giving accurate speed data?
    Thanks, Steve

Memory identified as PC2600 in MDD
    Symptom
Apple Hardware Test identifies the computer's memory as "PC2600" rather than "PC2700".
    Products affected
    * Power Mac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors)
    * Apple Hardware Test version 1.2.6
    Solution
There is nothing wrong with your computer's memory. This issue is addressed in Apple Hardware Test 1.2.7. If you have version 1.2.6 and are experiencing this issue, contact AppleCare for a replacement disc.
Apple is aware of that. It first showed up in 10.3.0 and has been there ever since. The issue with the above DDR2 is I think different and unique.
With the MDD, Apple used Micron in the system I got, and I added Crucial. Both show up as '2600.'

Installing the AMD driver and setting the Power Scheme to "Minimal Power Management" in Power Options is required to enable CnQ in XP.

Do I need to run and anti virus program with MAC OSX Lion? Have heard different opinions!
You will continue to hear different opinions here, where thoughts range everywhere between "anti-virus software is the evil spawn of Satan" to "anyone not running anti-virus software is a fool."
Truth is, this is still a very personal decision on a Mac. Depending on circumstances, it is still very easily possible to stay safe without using anti-virus software, but circumstances and personal preferences vary widely. Besides which, anti-virus software cannot even remotely provide you a guarantee of protection!

  • Any experience with refurb iMacs?

    Howdy all...
Wondered if anyone here has any experience with purchasing refurbished units from the apple.com store site? There seem to be a few deals there, and they do offer applecare, just wondering if maybe that's where all the lemons end up?
Any experiences at all would be great to hear, and don't need to be limited to iMacs... just really interested in the refurb experience as a whole.
    Thanks,
    adam

I bought a refurbished BlackBook at the end of June and it arrived in absolutely perfect condition - it even smelled new.
Refurbs are a great value. You get a discount, the full one year warrantee, and the ability to extend that to three years with AppleCare. For all intents and purposes, Apple treats it like a new unit.
I have even read here about people getting "free" upgrades with refurbs. Apple advertises the base configurations and ships out whatever they have in stock. Sometimes that means a larger HD or more RAM, but do not count on it. I would hold off on ordering RAM or a larger HD until you actually receive it to see what it comes with.
