Any free logic board replacements in 2007?

I got my logic board replaced on my iBook G3 once before under the replacement program. Imagine my surprise when it died again.
I've read here in the forums how people have successfully lobbied for a logic board replacement past the 3 year window. Has anyone been successfully recently in doing this? I called Customer Relations and they told me there was no way I could get a replacement. Any tips on how to get this done?

The most recent report I've seen was this one, received last month from Europe.
You may want to try calling Apple again at (800) 767-2775 and ask for Customer Relations (NOT Customer Service--they can't help you) and ask them to please make an exception to the three-year limit in your case.
If the answer from Apple is absolutely, positively, "NO!" you may want to consider trying the shim fix suggested by John Sawyer in the Apple Discussions iBook G3 (Dual USB) Displays Forum:
[Y]ou can often fix this yourself by removing the iBook's bottom housing, and placing a shim of any sort, about 1mm to 1.5mm thick, onto the raised square on the bottom shield. I use a Scotch mounting square--you can get them in hardware stores and many grocery stores. When you reinstall the bottom case, it will press against this shim, which will press against the graphics chip, and may allow the chip to come into better contact with the logic board.

If Apple doesn't come through, and the shim fix doesn't work (or you're leery of trying it), DT & T Computer Services in Fremont, California offers the cheapest repair I've found. They have a six-month warranty on the repair.
Once you get it fixed, try never to pick it up by the left front corner alone. Rumor has it that can contribute to logic board failure when the case flexes, causing the graphics chip to come loose from the logic board. If you're picking it up in your left hand (as I often do mine), pick it up in the center under the trackpad.

Logic board replaced, now network settings won't save

Got the black screen, Apple replaced the logic board on my MBP for free (yay, Apple!), but now it won't remember my network settings. I have to run network diagnostics, type in my pswd, etc., every time I wake from sleep.
When I first got it back from Apple, it couldn't find the network at all, and Apple gave me free tech support (again, yay, Apple!) because I successfully argued that the logic board replacement had caused the problem. I didn't realize in that support session that setting up a new network, while it would be saved in the system, would not automatically stay "on" -- otherwise I would've dealt with that then.
Running: 10.5.8 on 2.2 ghz late 2007 MBP. Cable modem and Airport Extreme. Others in house have no problems with wireless connection. The only thing that's changed is my logic board.
I read through several discussions, which talked about editing system files and such that I'm extremely uncomfortable doing, and there doesn't seem to be a definite solution for this problem stemming from logic board replacement.

Hi Kren,
It sounds like just a setting: Open System Preferences > Network > click on Advanced > click on Remember networks this computer has joined > you may wish to uncheck all the boxes for Require administrator password > click OK (I don't remember if you have to click Apply on the next screen, but if it's highlighted, you need to; if not, close Network and you should be good to go).

Have you had logic board replaced?

Hi,
I am wondering if any folks who have sent their MacBooks in to get the logic board replaced (and received them back) could comment on the effectiveness of the replacement.
I have been reading the boards avidly (as my MacBook is off in repair-land awaiting a logic board replacement) and noticed that some folks have been speculating that the logic board replacement won't fix anything.
Could someone who has had a logic board replacement report on the effect? Did it fix the problem? (Note: my issue is/was that the macbook refused to turn on anymore after 3 weeks of problem-free use)

About 8 hours after receiving it, my MacBook would not turn on. Called AppleCare and was told to bring it into an authorized service depot. Diagnosed as a faulty logic board, it was replaced and it's been fine ever since. 2 weeks and counting...

Loud fan after logic board replaced

I just had the logic board replaced on my 17" iMac after it would not power up (apple did it for free because they said it was one of the defective boards). The fan now is VERY loud. I have tried reseting the SMU, setting the CPU speed to something other than automatic. Nothing seems to work. Top say the machine is idle 95% of the time... Before the board was replaced it was VERY quiet... Any ideas?

Miriam is right. Take it back and have it repaired correctly. We have good consumer laws in MA so they have three chances to get it repaired correctly or they owe you a refund or a new machine.

Has the NVidia GeForce 8600M GT logic board replacement program been extended by a year?

I have heard that the logic board replacement program for MacBooks Pro with the failed NVidia 8600M GT chip has been extended from 3 to 4 years after the date of original purchase. However, a local AASP had no knowledge of such an extension. Is this true? I have a MacBook Pro 17" 2.6GHz that was purchased in 2008.

Prompted to sign in to trial version of CS6 after logic board replaced

Hello. I purchased CS6 10 months ago and just had the logic board replaced on my iMac. Now, when I open Photoshop on that computer, I get a dialogue box "Sign in Required to use your trial version of Creative Suite 6 Design Standard". I did that, but I don't see a way to enter and validate my product installation code so that Adobe recognizes this as a legitamately purchased version. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Since sending the first message, I closed and reopened Photoshop and was prompted to either continue with the trial version or enter a valid license key. I did the latter, so hopefully I'm back in business.

Logic Board replaced, Time Machine wont recognize old backups

I just got my Logic Board replaced and obviously having the problem with Time Machine recognizing old backups. I looked at old forums and found the macosxhints page (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080128003716101) on how to fix the problem but when I try to enter cd /Volumes/Time Machine/Backups.backupdb into terminal it gives me a message saying "no such file or directory" i dont know where to go from here any help would be appreciated thanks for your time

instead of Time Machine in that command you should enter "name of your TM drive" (put the name of your TM drive there and KEEP THE QUOTES). However, as you seem to be unfamiliar with terminal you will very likely have further problems following that hint. Try this one instead

TM error after logic board replaced

hey guys,
I've got a strange one. I had to have my logic board replaced in my Macbook Pro due to a nVidia graphics card dying. Time Machine was working like a champ before I dropped it off. When I got it back I got a TM error and it doesn't want to backup now. One thing that seems strange is that when I open a Finder window and then launch Time Machine, it's looking for files for Jonathan's Computer (2) instead of just Jonathan's Computer. (Yes, I'm Jonathan.) So it seems to be looking at some sort of duplicate or something. My backup files are on the TM drive and are searchable via Finder. However TM won't backup and I can't restore anything.
Any thoughts as to what may have been borked and how to fix it? Thx.

Why not? It's likely because the extra full backup has filled your TM drive.
See item #C2 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
It will show you how to locate the message(s) that describe the problem, then help you fix it.
If that doesn't help, post back with details, including all the messages, your setup (especially the destination for the backups), what you've done, and the results.
Also note #C8 which addresses the Logic Board problem.

Performing a system restore on iBook that has had its logic board replaced

I want ot do a system restore on my iBook G3. I had to send it in for a logic board replacement and received new install discs when it was returned to me. My problem is that I would like to have my iPhoto software and iMovie software that was installed on my computer when I purchased it. I have to do a clean install with the Mac OS X 10.3 disks that were shipped with the replacement of the logic board I will lose this. I want to use the system restore disks that came with my iBook when I originally purchased it. Is this possible since I have had my logic board replaced?

The simplest way to reinstall iPhoto and iMovie is to download Pacifist and then extract the relevant applications from the Software Restore Discs.
Pacifist comes with instructions; this is not a difficult operation and there is no need for erase & install to recover the applications.
Pacifist is Shareware, but you need not pay the fee in order to use it. Every time that you open Pacifist you will be prompted to purchase a licence. If you feel that Pacifist is worth the money (and I think that it is), you can purchase a licence at any stage.
If you're a plonker like me, then purchasing a licence will provide justification for third party developers like CharlesSoft to save the day for the rest of us.

Logic Board replaced after randomly shutting down

I know there are a lot of posts on the randomly shutting down issue...
My MacBook started randomly shutting down after a month since I got it. Apple replaced the logic board and I got it back today. I read on some posts that people got their logic boards replaced and the problem continued. Is this likely to happen with my MacBook?
This seems to be a big issue. My friend got a MacBook last week and it started randomly shutting off within the first hour of use. He had it exchanged, and it's fine now... but for how long?

I don't think it would do any good to yell at the store manager/technician. Still, I do understand you since I got the same problem here. However, since my logic board was replaced, I got fewer RSD, which is a start...
Personnaly, I know that my MB is guaranted 1 year, so I won't hesitate to have it repaired, or exchanged if needed (after 3 repairs for the same problem usually). As a matter of fact, other than some RSD, my fan has started making noises when I power up my MB, when it is cool. I wait because there is no solution out there yet (for RSD, and my problems are not that bad.
By the way, reading many of the threads around here, we can almost state for sure that:
-the logic board
-the RAM
-the hard drive
-the heat sink
-the battery
are not the (direct) sources of RSD. This has to be proved for the processor and the fan.

Logic Board Replaced, Now SuperDrive Wont Work

I recently had my logic board (motherboard) replaced by Apple. Now the optical drive (SuperDrive) won't work. Specifically, when I try to insert a disc, the SuperDrive does not sense the disc and it will no will not load the disc. Any suggestions to this problem?

Do you hear any sounds from the optical drive at all? If not, the technician may have simply neglected to plug it back in, or perhaps the cable was not well seated and has popped out.
In any event, contact Apple. The logic board replacement has its own warranty, and if the drive worked prior to the replacement and does not now, Apple will fix whatever is wrong under warranty.

System Logs & File Tags - logic board replacement

Hi,
I do have some queries for the logic board replacement on macbook pro running Yosemite:
If logic board is replaced -
1) Does the system log files available in console [Finder -> Applications -> Utilities -> Console] gets deleted or they will still be showing up from the date prior to the replacement of the logic board?
2) If I've created file tags before LB replacement, will they still show up after the replacement?
Any insight into the above will be of immense help.

It would need to be done by Apple Service. They should have the equipment to do this. Your serial number can be found under the battery and on you box your MacBook came in.

Logic board replacements: supply shortage!

I've seen a lot of threads on here encouraging anyone with a whining MBP to send it in for no-questions-asked logic board replacement, so I wanted to post a quick caveat...
My MBP has been in the repair queue at the Apple Store for a week and a half, and they're still waiting on shipments of logic boards; from what AppleCare can tell, it looks like supplies are hugely diminshed at this point, and the only stock of MPB logic boards is what the individual Apple Stores have on-hand.
Maybe I'm just unlucky, but chances are that if you're hoping for a one-day turnaround in a shiny yellow DHL box to stop the whine, you'll have to wait a bit longer...

My condition with regards to work isn't quite as bad as yours, however I did realize that as soon as I dropped the machine off I had forgotten to commit my last day and a half of work back to Subversion, so I've been just idly touching up things here and there as I don't want to waste a whole day and a half re-implementing something that's stuck on a 2.5" chunk of steel. sigh
Although, if there is a shortage, I'd better get cracking on re-doing that day and a half of work or I'm going to be even further behind on my projects. Thanks for the confirm.
My MBP is CTO, so I'm pretty much screwed on trying to get a replacement before the logic board comes in. I don't think I'll have lost any clients (I've been doing new stuff on my old PB) but I'm definitely not in a comfortable position wrt my existing work. Ah, the perils of computerization.
There is good news: I remember this happening back in the day with the problem-plagued old G3 iBooks, and many of those were just replaced with more recent boards as they became available. Maybe I'll get a 2.16 out of it.

Got logic board replaced, same problem! KERNAL PANICS!!!!

I got my logic board replaced about 1 month or so ago, due to a faulty gpu causing kernel panics whenever i played any games or used photoshop or anything that required a gpu or cpu to work hard. Now after waiting a month for the repair, the problem was not resolved. Any ideas??? Can I get it replaced? I noticed that the latop get extremely hot after maybe 10-15 mins of COD4 (too hot to touch) and then the game freezes and crashes or I get a kernel panic.

I forgot to mention that even when just browsing the internet, my temperature goes to around 70c and the fan is extremely loud, shaking the entire laptop and my desk. This also occurs when I play Age of Empires III. I sit next to my friend while he plays Wow and I play cod4, my computer is around 80-90c with the fan around 4000rpm, his is 60-65c with the fan at around 2500-3000rpm. My computer is too hot to touch after just 15 minutes, his is fine after more than an hour, right now, my laptop is at 58c and the fan is at 2000rpm and I can hear it quite well in a noisy room.

Refused Logic Board Replacement?

I was wondering if anyone sent in their MBP 15" to replace the logic board to get rid of the whine and was DENIED of that service? Thanks. Also, what are the chances they will wipe your HD?

You can't really request for them to replace the logic board, but if you have enough issues that makes it sound like the logic board needs to be replaced then I don't think you'll have any problems. For me, I complained that the computer was too hot to comfortably type on and that it had just crashed that same day I brought it in to the Genius bar. I implied that the crash was heat related (I thought it was) but when the Geniuses tested it at the store, the computer never felt uncomfortable. Nonetheless, they still obliged and sent the computer in. The repair center replaced the Logic Board with the new revision and, like others have said, it works well.
Secondly, my 2 experiences with Apple repairs have been that they won't wipe your HD for a Logic Board replacement. Instead, they'll almost always perform an archive and install of OS X.
