Any good chat alternatives to LINE?

I'm really sick of LINE. For example, I'm getting a replacement iPhone 5. LINE doesn't carry over the chat history from one device to the next, so I'm going to lose the chat histories. I could one-by-one back them up as plain text for each chat, but I still lose all media sent me by friends. It's dumb. It's not Apple's fault of course. The way LINE works just doesn't support the idea of people changing mobile devices.
And if I upgrade to an iPhone 6 I'll lose the chat histories again.
Plus you can't run LINE on multiple mobile devices.
Anybody have a favorite chat app besides LINE?
I like iOS messages, but it's not universal with my non iOS friends.
Any other good chat apps out there, which are cross platform compatible?
Thanks,
doug

Honestly, I still find the good "old-fashioned" SMS works best for me. Everyone with a cell phone has access to it. No need to load special apps. Most carriers in the U.S. are now offering unlimited SMS. My carrier also offers a web interface to my SMS and an app I can use on my iPad and Android tablets.
I back up my SMS chats on my computer using PhoneView (Mac) but I've heard good things about TouchCopy (Mac and Windows). It includes pictures.
For the few people who, for a variety of reasons I don't uses SMS, I use Twitter DM. Very cross platform and can even be routed over SMS if a data connection is not available. Twitter will let you download your old messages. Chat history is retained across devices. Lots of different app options.
I've also used Skype for messaging. Cross platform, can be used on multiple devices. Chat history is retained across devices.

  • Mac 10.5.8 - any good 'Skype' alternatives out there?

As many Mac users have found out recently, Skype have summarily removed access to users (like me - Mac 10.5.8) following their recent 'upgrade'.
It may be several weeks or months before Skype's promised upgrade, specifically for Mac 10.5.8 becomes a reality, so if anyone can recommend a reliable (and free video call system) website similar to 'Skype' - please let me know.

Is there some reason why you don't upgrade to 10.6?  10.7 is the operating system which completely drops Rosetta.  Few software titles are not compatible with 10.6 that are compatible with 10.5 when it comes to Intel Macs.  And the upgrade to 10.6, and then 10.6.8 is only $20.

  • Virtual PC 7 any good?

Hi there, I am in the process of purchasing new workstations and server for our office (replacing our whole network). There are 2 schools of thought, that we should go all Mac or all PC. The all Mac side is just me! Right now we have a horrible mixed network architecture and really old machines. I want to keep things as clean, simple and robust as possible.
The Mac network would consist of 2-3 workstations running the latest version of OS X and a server running OS X Server v10.4. The WSs would have to use Virtual PC in order to run the accounting sw package. My question is this - is it any good? Does one have to start the VPC before starting the windows sw. Where would the program files physically reside on the hard disk? Can you create aliases for these to put on the 'desktop'? I had some mixed experiences running 10.4.x on an old G4 (which had a hw problem with the processor or one of the boards) and OS 9 emulator, as it kept crashing all the time. The machine later totally died anyway, so the problems may well have arisen from this hw issue. I guess I'd have to wait for Microsoft Office 2008 to come out and use OpenOffice in the interim (we have some nasty formatted sales documents and leaflets that won't work very well in OpenOffice).
If we were to buy PCs, then we were looking at using either W*ndows V*sta Business/Ultimate or W*ndows XP Professional on the workstations, and putting ubuntu linux on the server. I am a bit concerned about all the aggravation that I might get re anti-virus sw and anti-spyware, as one has to keep removing this constantly with PCs. I also don't like giving money to Microsoft lol
Any thoughts or experiences would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks.
    Best
    Pat

New Macs can't run VirtualPC at all. So if one of the new machines is a Mac, you'll want to get Boot Camp, VMWare, Parallels, or one of the Intel Mac solutions on my FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/macosxnative.html#WINTEL
VirtualPC is designed for use on your G5, and is no longer supported, but should work fine for any accounting package. The place where VirtualPC falls down is when you have insufficient RAM or hard disk space allocated to it for the version of Windows you use, which you'll also see in my FAQ above.
You may even find CrossOver on a new Mac can run your accounting package without installing any Windows whatsoever, and be more secure.
Or you may find a version of an accounting package for the Mac that will run your accounting data without installing any Windows software on your Mac. See alternatives to OpenOffice on my FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/crossplatform.html
One can create aliases on the desktop for VirtualPC, though VirtualPC's software has to start up on its own. Boot Camp is a separate boot software
Note: Intel is not G5, and rather is IBM. So that's a distinction you should make. All new Macs are Intel. Your profile says you have G5s which are now a generation older than what is out there.
Viruses are almost unheard of on the Mac, and most people won't ever see a virus, unless they have to run Windows on the Mac. Your best bet is to tell that to your CIO, and tell them they'd have much lower support costs getting an all Mac network, as no anti-virus installations will be necessary and Macs for the most part just run. This FAQ page goes over those costs:

  • Any good APEX training class in NJ?

    Hi,
I'm a newbie to APEX. I'm at the point that I think I could use some serious APEX training.
what's your thought on APEX training? Did you folks just pick it up by yourself? How? BTW, the thousands of pages of User Manual/Advanced Tutorial do NOT help much, sometimes, they could be even confusing.
Any pointer to any good APEX training classes in NJ is appreciated. For some reason, APEX training in NJ is not on Oracle University's schedule. Or any other alternative? via video?
    Thanks much,
    Helen

I took the first two courses on APEX from DBCON (http://www.dbcon.com/courses.html). It's an online course which I'm not a huge fan of normally, but these two courses were helpful for me. The courses also included the "Pro Oracle Application Express" book which has also been helpful for me:

Disclaimer: I have absolutely no relationship with DBCON whatsoever. Just my two bits.

  • Does anyone know what programme i can use as iDVD is not on my mac.  I want to make a DVD from a movie created on iMovie? Is Burn any good? and if so, can I get it free?

Hi does anyone know what programme I can use to create DVD of a movie that I have created on iMovie?  There is no iDVD on my mac.  Is Burn any good? And if so, can I get it for free?
    Thanks.

There is no iDVD on my mac.
There is NO alternative.   But iDVD is very easy to get.
iDVD is on the iLife 11 DISK.  Buy here:
    http://www.amazon.com/Apple-MC623Z-A-iLife-VERSION/dp/B003XKRZES/ref=sr_1_1?ie=U
    Is Burn any good?
iDVD is vastly superior, especially for movies.

is ilife any good at publishing simple photo galleries like iWeb/ mobile me used to be?

As Roddy pointed out iWeb will still create album and/or photo pages that will work on the hosting server of your choice.  These two pages are demos of that: Using an iWeb Album Page as an Alternative to MobileMe Galleries  and Using an iWeb Photo Page as an Alternate to a MobileMe Gallery
This may also be of help to you: Life After MobileMe.

  • Any good books on Aperture 3?

Any good tutorial or guide books for Aperture 3. I'd love to see a Scott Kelby-esque book on the software to work with.

Some are mentioned in this Luminous Landscape thread:
    http://luminous-landscape.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=41963
I have found the following resources useful:
. The Ap3 manual in PDF form. Download, keep it open in Preview, annotate freely. Also on-line: http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/index.html#chapter=16%26se ction=13%26tasks=true
. The "Exploring Aperture" PDF, which contains some tutorials based on the sample library which ships with the Ap3 installation disk. http://support.apple.com/manuals/#aperture
. The Apple video tutorials. Disappointedly lightweight, but still worth one run-through. http://www.apple.com/aperture/how-to/#video-quickpreview
. There are some video tutorials sold here: http://shop.maccreate.com/collections/aperture-videos . Ellen Anon does a good job. The tutorial of Bricks is thorough. The one on Histogram is not. I found the Q&A webinar not worth the time it took to watch. The same Web site has a series of hints (free) -- there are worth paging through.
. Other than the manual (900 pages) none of those are books. The Apple Pro Training book should be out next month (April 12). It seems to be the one to buy (trainers at my local Apple store are waiting for it). http://www.peachpit.com/store/product.aspx?isbn=0321647440

  • Any good workflow tutorials out there for those moving from iPhoto Aperture

Any good workflow tutorials out there for those moving from iPhoto to Aperture 3?
Especially those that deal with using a laptop and off-line storage of photos.
    Cheers, Andrew.

There is no reason to not port a number from another provider (unless leaving a contract early and being charged the ETF) for if one does decide to switch back to their previous provider within the first 30 days after making the switch, the previous provider will take one back with welcome arms and the same phone number can be used this way.
Your way required getting a new phone number which can't be changed or potted after the fact for single line account.

hi, tell me any good app to download video song from youtube..thanks

[Get Flash Videos] ([get_flash_videos]) from the AUR.  It is a command-line program that can download the highest-quality-possible video streams from YouTube as well as many other video streaming websites, and also allows you to log in right there on the console if a video was content-flagged on particular a video-streaming service.  You can also download the subtitles/closed-captions along with video.

  • Any Good suggestions on docking station for tmt2

I just ordered my hp tm2t and waiting for delievery. In the meantime, I wonder if there is any good docking stations that comes with a stand and even audio speakers. I notice HP has a docking bundel that has everything that  I want, but based on wt i read so far, it sucks, so it would be nice if anyone knows of a good alternative docking station. THanks

If you are still looking for an answer, there are tools to help you do exactly what you are trying to do.  I had to solve this same issue last week trying to add both Apple Lossless and FLAC to my WMP library on a Win 7 x64.  It should work on 32 bit version too.  For me, converting to a lossy format such as MP3 or AAC was not desirable as their audio quality is too low for a high end home audio system.  I have a second lossy library to use on my iPhone with earbuds.
So far with only a week's experience to draw from this is working well.  It is a two part solution:
Add a DirectShow component that supports the media playback you want.  For Apple Lossless the open source one I found was DC Bass:  http://www.dsp-worx.de/?n=15  I had to also install madFlac 1.10 which you should not need to do if you only have Apple Lossless.  If you have any FLAC, you will need to add this:  http://madshi.net/madFlac.rar
Install WMP Tag Plus which works as a WMP plug in.  It allows WMP to read the file tags to treat your files as music rather than "other media"; also supports reading other tag data (song name, genre, etc) on the files
Step one will let you play your music while step 2 will help you organize the WMP library.  I have not tried to update tags from WMP yet, so I am not sure if that works.  I use Tag&Rename to update metadata in tags.
    I hope that helps.

  • Any good websites for scripting buttons and windows?

i want to start adding windows and buttons to my program, does anyone know any good sites i can look at?
    thanks,
    Sam x

thanks so much David. i wanted you ask you something about browse windows if you know...
the code at the bottom of the screen creates three buttons - the third is a browse button, so the user can search for a particular file. Do you know how to have a drop down browse box in pop up window?. Theres so little documentation on this sort of thing. i was hoping you would know something about it....
    i know that this line will create a browse pop up:  var targetFolder = Folder.selectDialog("Import items from folder...");
but i want to be able to have it as part of the window.
If you know anything that would be a great help, thanks, Sam

any good places to buy from or tips would be great

Two of the best are Crucial and OWC, http://www.macsales.com both are Mac specialists and have great support and lifetime warranties.  Avoid memory such as Kingston Value Ram as many on here have had a great deal of problems with it.
OWC has on-line videos that lead you through an installation.
