Any good reason to apply firmware update 1.2?

Just for those of you with a 2.17 Ghz iMac Intel Core2Duo (purchased December 2006) 20" model, is there a good reason to apply firmware update 1.2? I.e. does it improve compatibility with any other updates? I currently have Boot ROM version IM51.0090.B03. I didn't want to apply it unless absolutely necessary, or if it improves anything. I prefer to say "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

a brody...I did apply 1.2 the same day as it came out....wasn't having a problem before and did not have a problem after...saw no change....ain't broke ,don't fix it....for you 2 Al...
but you are both behind

  • Any Good Apps That Have Been Updated For iOS 4?

So I'm trying to find some good apps that really take advantage of the iOS 4 new features. Was just curious if anyone's using an app that was recently updated with the notes that it supports iOS 4. I know Fandango does, but it doesn't really have any iOS 4 features built-in...

  • Is there any good reason to buy an ipod?

a few months after the warranty ended, my ipod shuffle refused to be recognized recognized by any computer
i researched and read up and tried everything including imacs, g5's, laptops, desktops and every flavour of windows and linux i could find to get it to be recognized
defeated, i hauled it to local apple store
the geniuses at the genius bar affirmed there was nothing to be done for the ipod:
    nothing?
    yes, nothing.
is there no way to fix it?
does anyone fix anything any more?
    was the apparantly rhetorical response.
this strikes me as odd for so many reasons
leaving the absurdity of the response aside as an amusing anecdote, what confuses me is how a product with no moving parts can "break"
    regardless
i accept that without an extended service plan i'm on my own
but if the little buggers last only a little while
and can't be repaired when they stop working
    i wonder
is there any reason to even consider buying another one?
i've looked briefly and there are plenty of other options with more fnctionality for less $$.

    In response to mary-
As simple as it seems, the price of most consumer goods drop the longer its been on the market, especially electronics and MP3 players. The demand is so large Apple can sell shuffles for 150 when they come out. 18 months after its release a shuffle is now its $99!
So even if you are complaining that you have no fix for your shuffle and it its now unusable there is nothing you could do now. Yet you had a whole year to replace yours at no cost. I did it with mine. Walked in into the apple store. Talked with an employee, setup an appointment at the Genius Bar. Came back in an hour for the appointment, and handed over my broken shuffle, he tested it, and handed me a refurbished one and some paperwork. Done.
Now I know your views on the shufle have turned sour but I find it hard to believe there are more cons than pros for this product. Keep in mind this is made for a single user, therfore only one computer is necessary- If Apple allowed it on more computers like the other iPods, they would have to raise the price of the shuflfe to take into account the cost of sharing protected files across computers. If you say it can only be loaded with iTunes, well thats not bad at all. What other software would you use?
A few notable cons that you may not find useful now that yours is broken but would hopefully shed some light on why people actually buy this product:
-It is extremely small, allowing for use anywhere.
-If dropped from your hand, it does not disconnect from the headphones, saving it from damage.
-It weighs less than one ounce.
-It has 12 hour battery life, a flash hard drive, a simple but informative interface, battery indicator, LED, all in a .33 inch package.
-It can be used as a flash drive
-It can be charged in any USB port, even 1.1 speed ports found on Apple keyboards.
Keep in mind an MP3 player does not last forever, but people still seem to like it. Say on average the shuffle one year (which seems low). $99 (or $69) a year is worth it to most people. Just my .02

  • TS3423 How do I apply firmware update 1.9 on 10.6.8?

Hi, I'm trying to update the firmware on my MBP 15" (MacBookPro6,2) but I'm having trouble. I want to update to 1.9 (yes there is  an update to 2.3 or something but this requires lion which I have no intention to upgrade too), this says it requires 10.6.4 so one would assume that thats a minimum requirement but no it seems that 10.6.8 is an invalid system. Is there anyway around this? I think this update might have been missed when I got the machine as it went from 10.6.3 to 10.6.5 and missed 10.6.4. I think this update is the cause of the vain in my system, that is the external screen flickers, as the update says "it improves compatibility with external displays." • Any news on the next firmware update for E72?

Currently version: 031.023 - this is by far the worst update on any of the Nokia phones I have seen! Sick and tired of the phone hanging and having to restart at least 2 times on a given day.
So, any idea when there's goanna be an update? OR Is there going to be an update or not, now that Symbian is more or less dead?!!
Things I have tried: Hard reset, using the phone without the memory card, without any apps - none of this has helped!
Phone hangs all of a sudden.
Typical way to know when the phone's gonna hang next is the disappearance of the clock!
This is driving me nuts. Paid so much money for this shi**y phone. Hardware specs are great, but if you aren't able to use them properly, what's the effin' point, really?
Give me a STABLE software update (Nokia) and I'll be the happiest guy for another year without any thoughts of changing my phone!
I am already considering on buying a phone which can do its job efficiently without having to restart the damn phone a million times!
    Cheers!

  • I just applied an EFI firmware update to a intel core 2 duo macbook, now it won't boot up

After applying an EFI firmware update, the Macbook just spins the optical drive when I start it up!  I didn't see any indication that the EFI firmware update had any problems, so I'm stumped!

And if you can't get in, you can't read the Boot Rom version…
I suspect the update may have been OK for the MB but not for the OS version.
Unfortunately I have no idea if it's even possible to roll back a firmware update, or to maybe install a later OS like 10.6 while it's in that condition.
Bigger guns than me needed here, I'm afraid.

  • G5 firmware update in leopard?

I have a first generation dual 2ghz G5 that still has the 5.0.x firmware. I assume it is the orig. I went to update it to 5.1.4f0 but it gave me a permission error on the directory it tried to write to. What are my options here?
    Thanks

Hmm. I would have thought that any G5 to which that firmware update applied - that was delivered much after the release date, December 15, 2003 - would have it already installed.
This G5 is April 2004 and has 5.1.5f0 - think I once tried the 5.1.4 updater - when someone asked a question about it - but firmware updaters usually state 'you don't need it' or words to that effect, if it's not required. As far as I recall this G5 has always been on 5.1.5f0
If you are getting random freezing with 10.5.2 then I think I would post another question with that as the title - and as much detail as possible of when and how it happens.
It could be the firmware, I suppose - but the full details may point to another cause. There may be hints in Applications > Utilities > Console - system.log at around the time of the freeze, for instance. Good Luck.

  • MEGA STICK 520 Firmware update?

Hi, well I´been searching and reading this forum for quite some time and I haven´t found answers to this questions and I though that maybe someone did, so here it is:
I own a MEGA STICK 520 and I found a firmware update MS5520v0.2.0_FW.zip (2005-8-17) but I want to know exactly what does it changes, so if someone did the update, what does it do? And did you have any problems installing it? because I´ve read too many threads about players dying or allmost.
Is it the first firmware update? cause aparently for what i´ve read a lot of firmware with problems were solved with new versions.
    Thanks in advance,
    Bherno
Ps: sorry for my english, i´m from argentina. and please don´t answer me "just do it man!", because it cost me a lot of money and i can´t afford to kill it. I have two good reasons for doing the update, it´s really annoying that the player starts reproducing an album in the middle when it is prefectly organiced (in fact if you go manually to the first track it will play perfectly fine), and that the volume increases exponentialy.

The latest firmware feature is more little bug, thus please update the latest F/W (v0.2.0)!!
    Update items is as follows:
    1. Fixed bug: When manage “playlist” and power off, after power on “playlist” will be disorder.
    2. Fixed bug: The file name will be cut under “playlist” mode.
    3. Fixed bug: When didn’t use a long time, the screen wasn’t display.
Please do according to firmware update procedure of the following:
    Mega stick firmware update process:
    1. Please download and install the latest firmware and driver!!(http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/ia/ia/pro_ia_detail.php?UID=605)
    2. After firmware unzipping, it will show some files, please replace driver installation files (C:\Program Files\MSI\MS-5520)
    3. Please press sustained “play key” first (While mega stick can't be recognized by PC please add this procedure), then plug your mega stick 520 in your PC.
    4. Please go to "start" (below left corner) and enter "programs" and choose "MSI MS-5520" update now!!!
    5. As you update firmware that you can select "format data area" and after update success, you can release of your finger. (While mega stick can't be recognized by PC please add this procedure)
Please note: While mega player can't be recognized by PC, please don’t put battery with update firmware.
    Hope to solve your doubt!!

  • Freezing Imacs: Firmware Update 1.0

    Could this be the cure?

I found out about the update from the MacUser RSS feed. In fact, I was the anonymous user the author referred to in his piece:
Yesterday, in my "Apple bombs the Mac" post, an anonymous commenter opined:
+Wonderful. Now how about them putting some of their resources towards coming up with an improved iMac video driver to stop all of the **** freezing/blue screen/black screen issues we're having?+
Apple apparently reads MacUser's anonymous comments because--brace yourselves--they today made good on their promise to remedy that issue (which apparently still plagued some users even after a initial attempt at a fix), and released a firmware update for some 20" and 24" aluminum iMacs. Apple says the patch "updates the graphics firmware on the ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro to improve system stability."
Anyway, I ran Software Update and the ATI firmware update didn't show up. According to Apple, if your machine needs it, it will show up there. They also said that if you download it yourself and try to install it (and it doesn't need it), the install will come back with an error message.
Well, having nothing to lose (I've been dealing with this s--t since I bought the computer), I downloaded the firmware update anyway and installed it.
No error message. It installed fine.
I've been testing the computer, running every graphics-intensive program flat-out and it hasn't frozen yet. FrontRow. iTunes with visualizer at the same time as I made a movie in iPhoto. iTunes with visualizer at the same time as Medal of Honor on its highest settings. Basically I loaded up everything I could, including Activity Monitor, and so far it's going well.
The irony is that this morning the computer froze when I first turned it on, and that was the last straw. I spent all afternoon on the phone with AppleCare and finally got a Return Merchandise Authorization, and NOW they come out with a fix.
Even with this "fix", though, I'm probably going to return the machine. And those of you who are unsure about whether or not to do a return, let me tell you why I'm going to.
When I was on the phone with the Customer Service guy (the TOP of the AppleCare hierarchy; first, basic rep; then, Product Specialist; then, Sr. Product Specialist; THEN the Customer Service people who can actually authorize returns), he told me something interesting. I said that I wanted to make sure I didn't encounter the same problems with a new machine and asked him if people with new machines seemed to be satisfied.
He said, "Yeah, cause they're getting the ones with the new [graphics] cards in them."
"So there were a few bad cards," I said, playing dumb.
"Yeah," he said. "But you won't have any problems now. What I hear, they pulled them."
I'm not saying the above is gospel. All I'm telling you is what I heard from the Customer Service person setting up my return authorization.
The sense I'm getting from all of this is that they know there are a number of machines out there with bad cards, and the reason why the firmware update doesn't install on all machines is that it somehow tests the card first to see if it's faulty. If it is, it does the firmware update, maybe deactivating part of the card or creating a workaround. Otherwise, why wouldn't the update be mandatory for all computers with that graphics card? It's very fishy to me. I'm going to assume that the update merely put a patch on an otherwise bad card and press forward with the return.
Hope my rambling here helps somebody.

  • Creative Labs Firmware Update: Zen Touch Overv

This message is to give Creative Labs a clear overview of what is missing/needs updating in the next firmware download.
) Touch Pad Sensitivity- The Touch Pad sensitivity settings need to be changed to provide a slower scrolling speed.
    2) EAX Sound Features- Including EAX support just like in Xtra models.
    3) Volume Synchronization- The ability to apply the same volume to all music.
I think all Creative Zen Touch users would have to agree that these are most important things to be updated.
Yes, it is possible to adjust to the sensitivity of the scroll pad, however for new users is somewhat a disappointment. Most Zen Touch users would agree that the Touch Pad is over sensiti've and that such a problem is one of the reasons users buy the iPod. Based on the reviews which potential consumers use to decide on a purchase the Zen Touch loses points to the iPod for having the over sensiti've Touch Pad. The comparison was very close and the Zen Touch lost by fraction of points which can easily be solved with an update.
The comparison result can be found here: http://www.mp3.com/iPod+vs.+Zen+Touch/stories/090.html
The Zen Touch lost by only 3 points, however the Zen Touch as everything over the iPod besides the little things such as the style, and clearly the Touch Pad.
The EAX feature is highly supported by Zen Touch users and more information an be found here:
    http://forums.creative.com/creativel...&message.id=88
Lastly, another key features that was included on the Xtra models, but not included in the Touch was the Volume Synchronization. This is key for Ripped and Download music. The Ripping volume is often times different from volume that is provided by the MP3 download sites. This is another feature that is worthy of upgrade.
Creative has a lot of potential right now, mainly because the features on the Zen Touch outperform the iPod yet Apple still has the market on MP3 Players. It would not hurt at all to update these features mainly because the iPod has been around longer so they obviously had more time to perfect the MP3 Player.
Thus, I encourage Creative Labs to take a lead on the MP3 market by releasing the next firmware with these updated features.
No matter how you look at it the Zen Touch should be leading the MP3 market.
With these small updates I think more consumers will purchase these players, thus increasing Creative revenue.
Please Creative you have heard loyal customers speak out, now it would be a great time to show loyalty and boost your customer service reputation from great to the best support.
If anyone agrees or support these firmware updates please post here.
    Sincerely,
    -Coolrulez

well, I have to disagree with #3. You should actually be able to set the Sync Properties on the Program you use to put music onto the Touch anyhow. the Easiest way to do this without this, is putting all music in the same format, and in the same size. Unless the recording/file is already bad, that should do you well. I use WMP0 and all my files were ripped in the same Quality, and if not, they were automatically converted to fit the specifications I chose, which was WMA-28KBPS. And mostly it all sounds the same. Of course, the classical music I listen to quieter than the Rock I listen to, but thats normal.

  • Problem about SMC Firmware Update 1.7

So I was browing and suddenly a notification pops up about OSX update. It was about SMC Firmware Update 1.7
    I am using a MBP 15" Late 2011. ( OSX Version 10.8.2 )
I did clicked update and it asked me to restart. But instead of a restart it automatically logged out. So I logged in and clicked Update and then when it asked me for restart it clicked restart. So now it showed me a Grey screen, the cursor was still there. The cursor was still moving. So I though now this is getting updated but it didn't showed any window of Software update for 20 mins. I assumed it was downloading the update.
The update is just 1 MB or something and I have a connection of 2Mbps so 10 mins were too long I guess. I had to shut the mbp by holding the power button. after 2 mins I press the power button. it started and showed the window of software update and downloaded it automatically and updated, fans went on full speed as mentioned in the update.
Now that I check my firmware version. It shows me " SMC Version (system):          1.69f4 "
    My question is shouldn't it be SMC Version : 1.7 ? :|

That's the right FW version. Apple is all screwy with numbers. There posted FW update 1.7 mean just about nothing.
If you want to save yourself a few headaches turn off the Auto Update system and then periodically run Software Update. If there are updates look at what they are and you can pick and chose which ones you install. If you don't need it, the system is running fine, there is no good reason to constantly do updates.
This also give you a chance to look at the support document for the update and do a google search to see if there are any problems being reported.

    Hi,
I just installed the firmware update and now the computer will not recognize the built in isight (in ichat preferences it says there's no camera attached and when you launch photobooth it says there's no camera attahced). Anyone have any ideas? Since the firmware update was successfully installed I'm not sure if'how I can back out of it and if so what to do next...

I just applied the firmware update and had the same problem. So I restarted and all is well. Photo Booth recognizes the iSight and iMovie does as well. Did you try restarting after the iSight wasn't recognized?

  • Late 2006 MacBook Pro replacement keyboard: firmware update required?

My late-2006 2.33GhZ MacBook Pro is still going strong -- except that a group of keys on the internal keyboard stopped working two weeks ago, requiring me to replace it. It was a delicate operation, but it worked like a charm.
Shortly thereafter, though, I started noticing a symptom that jogged my memory: when I'd go to type something, quite often the first character would be dropped, as if the keyboard wasn't waking from its low-power state quickly enough. This had been a common complaint with this model, and Apple addressed it with the MacBook Pro Keyboard Firmware Update released in 2008. I recall installing it and very specifically noticing the problem had vanished.
So of course now I'm wondering: is it possible my new keyboard needs the firmware update too? You can see the catch-22 I'm in: I can't install it, since the computer is convinced the updater has already been run. when I do run it, I get a generic message that the update isn't necessary. I even tried removing:
    /Library/Receipts/boms/com.apple.pkg.BuiltInKybdFirmwareUpdate.bom
to see if that would enable the updater to run, but no dice.
Of course it's possible I'm simply losing my mind, and the keyboard already has the update. Could someone else with this exact model -- someone who has run the keyboard firmware update -- tell me what version their internal keyboard is at, based on:
System Profiler -> Hardware -> USB -> Apple Internal Keyboard
    Many thanks!

    Hi Eric,
Any resolution to this? I do not have the exact same MacBook - mine is a 17" MacBook Pro, but in case it helps you, my updated keyboard version is 0.18 using the same installer
My problem is that when I originally used that software update (over a year ago), it created an intermittent keyboard/trackpad failure. Every 2 days, on a very regular basis, my trackpad and keyboard fail. In order to fix the problem, I go to the Utilities folder and run the "Built-In Keyboard Update Firmware" that the original DMG installer installed there. Once I run that program I'm good for another 2 days. Apple, of course, has no clue to what's going on.
Why am I telling you all this? I noticed that you are running Snow Leopard. I tried to upgrade to Snow Leopard a couple of weeks ago. After the Snow Leopard install, my keyboard failed like clockwork; however, it turns out that the firmware installer that I have been relying on for the last year to fix my intermittent failures no longer works under Snow Leopard. My phone calls to Apple were a complete waste of time (apparently there is a very low threshold to get on the "Genius Bar"). One of my questions to them was specifically about a way to re-run the installer from the DMG file. They again had no clue, and In the end I had to downgrade to Leopard to get my Keyboard back.
All that said to let you know that even if you can find a way to re-install the firmware updater (I'd like to know how, if you figure it out), there is a good chance the actual firmware update won't install under Snow Leopard.
Good luck - let me know how you make out.
