  • Any good books for learning flash?

I'm trying to learn how to use flash, and there's only so much I can learn on my own. I looked up some books on various websites, but I don't know which would be the "best" to use for someone completely new to the program.

I would recommend anything by David Stiller. He posts a lot on these forums and has a great way of explain the why and how of doing stuff in Flash.
It also depends upon if you are planning on learning code or timeline animation (or both). Chris Georgenes (who also often posts here) is a genius animator and has some good books too.
For animation through code I recommend Keith Peter's "Making Things Move."
There are also great on-line tutorials like at gotoAndLearn.com by the amazing Lee Brimlow.
    That should get you started...

  • Good book for learning to use?

is there an apple pro training book on aperture? if not, would anyone be able to recommend a good book on using aperture?

Yes there is a book in the Apple Pro Training Series. It is entitled "Getting Started with Aperture" by Estelle McGechie. It might be available at a local Borders or Barnes & Noble or you can get it at www.peachpit.com

Buy it if you think you might benefit. Be warned, it is a complete waste of paper.

  • Good source for learning - SQL Stored Proceedures using Dreamweaver

I am looking for a good source for learning how to integrate
    Stored
    Proceedures using Dreamweaver?
Is there a book or something online?
    Thanks

    Hey Lee,
You find yourself in that position, I find myself in that
    position, every
damn developer/programer in the world find themselves in that
    position. It
may be on different levels, but everyones in the same boat.
Here is my suggestion. Take the existing knowledge you have,
    pick a
technology that is a bit more futureproof (if the one you
    have is getting
outdated) and one that isn't too far removed from the one you
    know and put
it all into that one area.
Databases are really important if you want to be a decent web
    developer. If
you're serious and want to be good then devote time to a
    particular database
and get to know it well. I would suggest SQL Server. You
    don't have to be
DBA standard but get as much knowledge on it as you can.
    Never underestimate
    your required knowledge of databases.
Set yourself goals. Say to yourself "In 6 months I want to be
    a proficient
developer in this language" and go for it. Don't get
    side-tracked into
something else just keep focused on one area and get good at
    it. Yes, that
language will become outdated in time but you will be all the
    more ready to
take on the next because of your past experiences.
I try to look at it like this; It is better to a master of
    one technology
and know enough to get by in others than a Jack of all
    technologies but a
    master of none.

  • Good site for Video Editing tools (open source)

I'm a recent convert to Mac, and I'm having a hard time finding comparable tools to what is available via open source on the Windows side. Specifially in the H.264 arena. There are a multitude of open source encoding tools for Windows. I'm sure there have to be some for Mac. Are there any good sites that list these? I'm tried versiontracker and The Mac Orchard, but I'm hoping for something more specific like VideoHelp.com
Any suggestions? I'm looking for encoding software that can do inverse telecine, import DivX/Xvid/DV, Trim video (to remove letterboxing), and encode to H.264.
    Thanks!

Can't help with the video stuff, but since you're a newcomer to the Mac, see these:

Basic Tutorials on using a Mac,

    MacTips, and
Switching to the Mac: The Missing Manual, Leopard Edition.
And a link to open source software: http://sourceforge.net/ Search for *multimedia for Mac*.
    Additionally, *Texas Mac Man* recommends:

  • Suggest a good book for learning?

    Hey, all.
Trying to get into the automating/scripting thing as I've started a new job that has to do a lot of versions of similar animations/illustrations. I'm no programmer, but have had some success with simple AppleScripts in Illustrator and Photoshop, but After Effects doesn't like to play nice with AS. So I figure I may as well focus my efforts on ExtendScript/JavaScript to work with all the apps, be cross-platform, plus help with my limited Expressions knowledge.
So can anyone suggest some good books for learning the JavaScript language? I've done online tutorials, which have helped a little, but just a big ol' consolidated JavaScript book, teaching the structure and syntax from the beginning (again, not a programmer by trade) would be best for me. Thing is, 95% of the books I've looked at are focused on web design, which I'm not that interested in. I'll use one if the core JavaScript teachings are well-presented and I can just ignore the web stuff; just don't want to buy a book that I'm only going to read half of and not learn everything I need to.
All suggestions welcome, and thanks in advance.

Hi there - lots of resources...
Look up "eloquent javascript" online for a pdf.
    Javascript - The Definitive guide
    NewThinkTank on youtube
    Codeacademy
Then it's the scripting guide for the other half.

  • Good site for finding pictures

    Hello everyone,
One of my friends asks me to help him to find good sites for finding good pictures(he is about making a real estate website )and I found here the best place to help him so please introduce me  good site for finding good pictures if it is possible????
    thanks beforehand

If all people ask ambiguous questions in this way I do not know what is going to happen.
If your friend is preparing a real estate site, I would assume that...
your friend would use actual photos of the real estate he is selling. There are no existing sites for that. He needs to take his own pictures of his properties.
your friend might want generic stock photos. The first two links in those google results point you to a perfectly useful paid service and a perfectly useful free service. How you cannot find usefulness in those search results is beyond human reason.
If you want the benefit of useful input from humans instead of a search engine, provide a useful question. You gave no hint as to what type of real estate and what kind of photos you are seeking.

  • Good site for game app reviews???

Has anyone found a good site for app reviews of games/entertainment titles in particular?
I am interested in getting a racing game - either Real Racing or Need for Speed - and curious which one is considered better.
    Thanks, Steve

I've been using TouchArcade for a few years now to find games for my iPod Touch and they've started reviewing iPad games too. They're great!

  • Any good websites for scripting buttons and windows?

i want to start adding windows and buttons to my program, does anyone know any good sites i can look at?
    thanks,
    Sam x

thanks so much David. i wanted you ask you something about browse windows if you know...
the code at the bottom of the screen creates three buttons - the third is a browse button, so the user can search for a particular file. Do you know how to have a drop down browse box in pop up window?. Theres so little documentation on this sort of thing. i was hoping you would know something about it....
    i know that this line will create a browse pop up:  var targetFolder = Folder.selectDialog("Import items from folder...");
but i want to be able to have it as part of the window.
If you know anything that would be a great help, thanks, Sam

    I didn't mention Lynda.com.
And, no, Total Training and Lynda.com certainly haven't merged.
Total Training has some good Premiere Pro stuff, but it's not the first place that I'd point someone for Premiere Pro.
