Any good tutorials on workflow for correcting white balance RAW from GoPro 3?

Looking for tutorial on how to color correct video recorded using GoPro 3 with white balance set to RAW. here is sample frame:

"wabbit316" ...
I've got the book by Hullfish & Fowler that shooter-nz recommended and I would HIGHLY recommend you get it. It is well- written, covers working in nearly any NLE/grading/fx application for color & grade corrections, and is easy to understand and apply what you learn reading through it. I'd already spent a fair amount of time playing around working on color/grading in P-Pro, Speedgrade, and Ae before I got the book, but my next bit after reading this went SO much faster and direct ... to a much better solution.
Excellent approach to explaining what one is doing. I've hear good stuff about the other, and frankly ... might very well get that one too. Amazing what a little knowledge can do ...

  • Correcting White Balance with no white in shot

Does anyone have any tips for correcting white balance when the footage has no white objects to act as a reference? This was the classic mistake of shooting outdoors with an indoor setting. We were rushing to utilise a gap in the rain!
Also, is there any way to tell Premiere how to correct WB via a sort of colour matching, by pointing it towards a correctly white balanced still of the scene?
    Thanks
    Davyd

This is a really tricky thing. There's a lot of ways to approach it. I had similar problems with a WB correction mismatch between presets on my 7D and 70D. No white in either shot.
I exported a few frames in to PS first to get a rough idea with what I was dealing with.
Use the Info window to check something grey.
Alternately, if there is nothing grey, you can use skin tone patches. This is a common tool used by skin retouchers in PS. Grab a small sample or two from the desired skin tones, either from a 5x5 grab with the eyedropper or just grabbing a small section with the lasso tool and Gaussian Blurring that to heck and back. Once you get a bit of a palette of skin tones you like, you can use that as a reference for your work with the Fast Color Corrector.
To be honest, I feel the FCC is a little underpowered and I wish I had my AAVC 6 Channel HSL tool from Vegas when color correcting.
As a Photoshop geek, I am a little uncomfortable with the video color correction toolset.
To export a frame, click on the viewing panel and hit Ctrl-Shift-E.
Try opening the frames in Adobe Camera Raw and you can get some temp and tint values that can also help you with your Prem Pro toolset.
Remember to watch out for channel clipping when making dramatic changes in WB.

  • Are there any good tutorials on how to do digital paintings?

I have some drawings of mine that I wanted to turn into digital paintings. I can't find any good tutorials on YouTube. This is an example of something I would like to learn:

    These are my favourite

Digital Tutors has some good stuff
    http://www.digitaltutors.com/11/index.php?gclid=CNaF38q14MMCFQpwvAodMJwAbg
But you need to register an account for both of them.  Lots of titles out there if you look though.
The Bert Monroy titles on Lynda.com are also very good, but a slightly different style.  More illustration that digital painting.  Take a look at his huge Times Square graphic to see what he does.  Zoom way way in to see the incredibly detail

Loads of of tips and tricks in Steve Caplin's 'How to Cheat in Photoshop', and even better '100% Photoshop'.
Good luck and have fun.  By far the most enjoyable way to use Photoshop in my opinion.

Are there any good DVD authoring programs for Mac now that Apple has discontinued DVD Studio and iDVD? I need to make DVDs that have interactive menus and such (Final Cut X and Compressor 4's DVD option is a little cheap and doesn't provide any kind of professional DVD authoring). Any ideas?

This comes up a lot these days.
Practically speaking, there are really four options for the Mac platform: Toast (<$100),  Adobe Premier Productiom ($1,600 to buy or $50/month to rent),  find a copy of Final Cut Studio from 3rd  party (+/- $1,000 new) or a boxed edition of iLife to get iDVD ($50 - $90 on Amazon new).
The other question everyone has is how many OS versions before iDVD or FCS breaks? No one knows, but Apple has said they're no longer supporting these legacy apps. Of course, no one is mandated to upgrade to a new OS unless they buy a new computer. So if it works on a system, stay with it as long as it makes sense.
    Good luck.

  • Correct white balance

I just join new job. They taped big project with white wall. Three cameras. Two of them are same and one new camera. I am not sure which camcorders but I see those two cameras are apparently off white balance (slight yellow) while new camera show look great. I am not familiar with color corrections. It got me confused which ones that I should adjust for white balance correction like level controls highlighs mids blacks, color balance, color controls.. all those... not sure which is good to correct white balance. Hope that I am able to match with one look so white and great colors.

    Try the Magic Wand.
Turn the CC to Visual mode, that's where you see the colour wheels.
At about seven o'clock on the Balance wheel is a little eye dropper.
    Here's how to do it:
Have the clip edited into the Timeline then place your playhead over that clip.
Open this clip (the one in the Timeline that needs to be corrected) into the Viewer. Okay, what you have is the same clip being diplayed in the Viewer and Canvas. This is so when color corrections are made in the Viewer you can see the changes in the Canvas straight away. You know if things going the right way or not.
Drag the Color Corrector from the Browser>Effects>Video Filters>Color Correction>Color Corrector and drop it on the Viewer.
A Color Corrector Tab will be available on the Viewer.
Click the Color Corrector Tab and the CC Filter appears.
Click the eye dropper and move the cursor over the Canvas, the cursor should look like an eye dropper if all is well.
Find something that should be WHITE in the Canvas, place the eye dropper over this and click on it. Instant balance correction can be seen in the Canvas.
If this doesn't work then you can use the wheels manually to change the balance.

  • Aperture incorrectly reading white balance data from RAW file?

I'm having some problems with both Aperture 1.1.2 and 1.5 importing RAW files from a Nikon D70 and a Canon G6. In both cases, Aperture is not reading the "as shot" white balance correctly.
With the G6, Aperture is always setting a fixed color temperature of 6016K, and a fixed tint of -15, regardless of the image in question. If I read the same image using Adobe Camera Raw, or Lightroom, then it I get the white balance value as set in the camera.
With the D70, it's picking up a different white balance value from the one set in the camera, always one far warmer than it should be, and with a green tint. Again, the Adobe tools get the right value out of the RAW file. With both cameras I have experimented with setting the white balance manually on the camera, and also with the "auto white balance" setting, but it makes no difference to Aperture.
Obviously I can change all of the values manually, but it's very time consuming, and in most cases the in-camera value is pretty close to what I need, so I'd much prefer Aperture to use it.
In any case, I'm worried about the discrepancy between Aperture and Camera Raw on something so basic.
Anybody got any ideas? I'm hoping I'm just doing something silly, as I have only been using Aperture for a couple of weeks, and maybe something is mis-configured.
    Thanks
    HG

In any case, I'm worried about the discrepancy
between Aperture and Camera Raw on something so
    basic.
Sorry I can't help you directly with Aperture as I haven't bought it - yet. However, re-the above quote, I'd just mention that the interpretation of colour temperature values is not quite as simple as it might seem. Even more so when you bear in mind that RAW converters from 3rd parties like Adobe or Apple are not based on the RAW conversion engine produced by the camera manufacturer - in effect they have to guess/estimate what the temp/tint values in the RAW file actually mean...
Some time back I made a series of tests using 3 Canon cameras, with ACR, Capture One & the Canon RAW converter. Each produced noticeably different results, and C1 & ACR showed quite different temp/tint values. (The Canon software only showed 'As Shot' - no values). The differences were consistent between shots from each camera (using WB values input or AWB) - but they weren't consistent from one camera to another. Which program produced the best result depended very much on the Camera/Subject/Personal taste...
Hope someone can help with Aperture specific info, I'm sure there must be a way of making camera specific adjustments to the RAW conversions...

  • Can Anyone Recommend Any Good Tutorials For A Beginner?

    Hi,
I just purchased Pro Logic 9 and was wondering if anyone knows of any good lessons/tutorials to help a first time user of the Pro Logic series. Im excited to get into this program and record but it is so powerful that it is a bit overwhelming. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

    I agree with JG99.
    +1 macprovideo
I've seen both the lynda and macprovideo logic training. Don't get me wrong the Logic training at lynda is ok for the basics. The macprovideo ones are excellent and go much further. So I could learn in depth how all the instruments, like the EXS24 sampler, Ultrabeat drum machine, synths and plugins work and how to use them. There are proper whole tutorials dedicated to mixing and mastering. For me and my studio buddies macprovideo for final cut, logic and now the photoshop titles has saved us countless hours and a lot of hair!

The macprovideo iPad and iPhone apps rock too!

  • Any good freeware battery tester for the Macbook?

I searched for battery tester on versiontracker and there are no results. I saw the genius bar used an ipod nano to test my battery. I wonder if anybody knows a good downloadable battery tester for Macbooks.

In addition to that link (which is very good) there are two popular applications I see a lot of members post about:

  • Color managed workflow for web and camera raw

I recently calibrated my monitor and was wondering what is the preferred workflow for the web? I shoot with my camera in sRGB and my working space in Photoshop is sRGB aswell. The problem that has arised now is that the color managed colors in Photoshop are way different than the non-color managed in my web browser. Is this normal? And what I don't quite get is how a photo that has an embed sRGB profile looks the same in Firefox (that understand embed profiles) and Photoshop, but in Google Chrome (that does not recognize embed color profiles) shows the colors very differently, although the browser should understand the photo is in sRGB by default and show the same colors that are in Photoshop, right? So what happens here, because the colors are not the same? What information does Photoshop assign to the embed color profile that makes the colors so different?
Anyway, I assume the problem here seems to be my newly calibrated monitor profile. The only way I can get the same colors to my photo in Photoshop and to a photo in web is to use soft proofing set to my Monitor RGB AND save without a color profile. Is this the way to go? But here comes another problem. I shoot in RAW and use camera raw to edit my photos. Camera Raw doesn't allow soft proofing, so I'm stuck with these color managed colors that are so different from non-color managed colors I get in my browser that any color correction in Camera Raw is simply useless. Unless everyone was using color managed browsers and I could start to use fully color managed workflow, but that's not the case I suppose. So, what's the solution here?

First off, you need to be working in sRGB, or converting to sRGB when you save out files that are destined for the web. You can change the color space that Camera Raw (ACR) send your raw files to by clicking the blue text in the bottom center of the ACR window. This is probably that safest workflow for you until you get a handle on color management. If the color of your images is very important, you might consider embedding a color profile in them, which will help color managed browsers render your color properly.
If your display's color gamut is different than sRGB (many are), you'll find matching colors for non-color-managed browsers to be impossible. But consider the average display and take heart. The best you can do is correct to a standard and hope for the best.
Both the convert to sRGB and embed color profile options are in the save for web dialogue box.

  • Correcting white balance

I set my white balance wrong for an interior shot. The walls should be white but they are now yellow. Is there a filter or procedure other than the Color Corrector that would give me almost true whites? Something such as a selective color tool where I could select only certain colors and change their hue/saturation etc?
    Thanks

    >I don't think correcting color temperature is something you'd do with masks.
Certainly not Mr G., just advising how to do a selective color adjustment as per the latter part of the question "Is there ... something such as a selective color tool where I could select only certain colors and change their hue/saturation etc?".
Tacbob, chances are, for a simple white balance issue the built in auto analysis may be all you need, tho its a bit hit and miss and may affect your image in other ways that you didn't want (eg contast and brightness). Otherwise (or to correct for unwanted side affects) for overall color balance adjustmentments you can just use the Color Board (without masks) to affect a global correction by adjusting accordingly ... for example, if the shot is too warm you can move the color tab's Global control to the lower  area of the yellow/orange section of the Color Board to subtract some of that unwanted warmth (or if it's too cool then you can move it similarly but to the blue area of the board). Similar controls in the Exposure tab will let you adjust the Contrast / Brightness. Likewise for color saturation in the Saturation tab. Have a read through the info at the link Goldfish provided ... and don't be afarid to poke about a bit, the tools may seem confusing at first but its all non-destructive and a bit of practice is all you need.
    Good luck
    Andy
