Any hardware with app to watch DVDs using Dolby Headphone?

I love (and sometimes by no other choice) to watch DVDs on my laptop (in this case my new MacBook Pro). I've good set of Bose headphones but I really miss the 'surround sound experience. Googling, I found a small hardware device - http://www.audiotrak.net/optoplay.htm - from Audiotrak that plugs into a USB port and seems to offer Dolby Headphone technology... however, although the specs say that it will work on a Mac it looks as if the only included app for playback is a Windows app called "WinDVD Player" and the product seems somewhat dated: it's USB 1.1 and it says that it works with "Mac OS 10.1 or later".
Does anyone know anything of this product - or other similar products - that are small and portable, have licensed Dolby Headphone technology, and would work on a MBP?
Watching a movie on a small screen (in 'normal' size - full screen, to me, looks pretty bad. But the worst thing is the sound I'd just like for it be be more realistic... it's fine for "South Park: Season Seven" but rather blows when watching a flick in which the sound is supposed to be part of the experience...

Yes, I do wish someone who knew about how DVD Player and Macs with digital output function would jump in here and clarify things! If you go to DVD Player Help there's one section - "Selecting the audio output for a DVD movie" that tells you how to set up DVD Player Preferences with the optical out jack... my GUESS is that the actual decoding is accomplished via the home theater system, although the jack could be connected to the "Logitech Z-5500 5.1 THX Speaker System" and accomplish he same ). And there are likely dozens - if not hundeds - of digital speaker systems out there that do the same.
Oh - and just as an interesting side note, I found an old reference disk and DVD Player played Dolby Digital (through analog headphones and MacBook Pro speakers) just fine... and also played DTS although the warning sign that came up on screen said "In order to playback the DTS Digital Surround Sountrack, you will need a DTS ready DVD player with DTS digital output connected to a DTS decoder." OK, fine, I have that in my living room... and although neither Dolby or DTS sounded anything like the Dolby Headphone surround sound that I get when I jack in to my Denon AVR-4806 receiver, the sound differences left and right channels was obvious and there was a 'center channel' effect. Odd. I'm going to have to find one of my newer disks and see how newer audio formats are handled.
I really DO wish an Apple Sound engineer would jump in here! Maybe one of the folks responsible for DVD Player (yes, we take it for granted... but thanks for the new audio and video controls in Tiger! Sure would be nice to have Dolby Headphone available - particularly on laptops - on we who are always on the road!)

  • Any problem with a single MySQL database used on more than one site?

I have a set of multiple sites hosted separately I'm working on. I'd like to set up a PHP/MySQL database on one site, and be able to pull data from it for completely separate sites. Seems like it shouldn't be a problem. Are there any problems with doing this I need to be aware of?

I've set up databases on three different hosts, and in all cases I could access the databases from outside the domain of the site itslef.  GoDaddy is one of them, they used to restrict it, but now they give you the option when setting up a new database on your account.

What could be the problems using Onyx ?

    How to maintain a Mac
    1. Make redundant backups, keeping at least one off site at all times. One backup is not enough. Don’t back up your backups; make them independent of each other. Don’t rely completely on any single backup method, such as Time Machine. If you get an indication that a backup has failed, don't ignore it.
    2. Keep your software up to date. In the Software Update preference pane, you can configure automatic notifications of updates to OS X and other Mac App Store products. Some third-party applications from other sources have a similar feature, if you don’t mind letting them phone home. Otherwise you have to check yourself on a regular basis. This is especially important for complex software that modifies the operating system, such as device drivers. Before installing any Apple update, you must check that all such modifications that you use are compatible.
    3. Don't install crapware, such as “themes,” "haxies," “add-ons,” “toolbars,” “enhancers," “optimizers,” “accelerators,” “extenders,” “cleaners,” "doctors," "tune-ups," “defragmenters,” “firewalls,” "barriers," “guardians,” “defenders,” “protectors,” most “plugins,” commercial "virus scanners,” "disk tools," or "utilities." With very few exceptions, this stuff is useless, or worse than useless.
The more actively promoted the product, the more likely it is to be garbage. The most extreme example is the “MacKeeper” scam.
As a rule, the only software you should install is that which directly enables you to do the things you use a computer for — such as creating, communicating, and playing — and does not modify the way other software works. Use your computer; don't fuss with it.
Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it. Otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
The free anti-malware application ClamXav is not crap, and although it’s not routinely needed, it may be useful in some environments, such as a mixed Mac-Windows enterprise network.
    4. Beware of trojans. A trojan is malicious software (“malware”) that the user is duped into installing voluntarily. Such attacks were rare on the Mac platform until sometime in 2011, but are now increasingly common, and increasingly dangerous.
There is some built-in protection against downloading malware, but you can’t rely on it — the attackers are always at least one day ahead of the defense. You can’t rely on third-party protection either. What you can rely on is common-sense awareness — not paranoia, which only makes you more vulnerable.
Never install software from an untrustworthy or unknown source. If in doubt, do some research. Any website that prompts you to install a “codec” or “plugin” that comes from the same site, or an unknown site, is untrustworthy. Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must be acquired directly from the developer. No intermediary is acceptable, and don’t trust links unless you know how to parse them. Any file that is automatically downloaded from a web page without your having requested it should go straight into the Trash. A website that claims you have a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with your computer, is rogue.
In OS X 10.7.5 or later, downloaded applications and Installer packages that have not been digitally signed by a developer registered with Apple are blocked from loading by default. The block can be overridden, but think carefully before you do so.
Because of recurring security issues in Java, it’s best to disable it in your web browsers, if it’s installed. Few websites have Java content nowadays, so you won’t be missing much. This action is mandatory if you’re running any version of OS X older than 10.6.8 with the latest Java update. Note: Java has nothing to do with JavaScript, despite the similar names. Don't install Java unless you're sure you need it. Most users don't.
    5. Don't fill up your boot volume. A common mistake is adding more and more large files to your home folder until you start to get warnings that you're out of space, which may be followed in short order by a boot failure. This is more prone to happen on the newer Macs that come with an internal SSD instead of the traditional hard drive. The drive can be very nearly full before you become aware of the problem. While it's not true that you should or must keep any particular percentage of space free, you should monitor your storage consumption and make sure you're not in immediate danger of using it up. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of free space on the startup volume for normal operation.
If storage space is running low, use a tool such as the free application OmniDiskSweeper to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the most space. Move rarely-used large files to secondary storage.
    6. Relax, don’t do it. Besides the above, no routine maintenance is necessary or beneficial for the vast majority of users; specifically not “cleaning caches,” “zapping the PRAM,” "resetting the SMC," “rebuilding the directory,” "defragmenting the drive," “running periodic scripts,” “dumping logs,” "deleting temp files," “scanning for viruses,” "purging memory," "checking for bad blocks," or “repairing permissions.” Such measures are either completely pointless or are useful only for solving problems, not for prevention.
The very height of futility is running an expensive third-party application called “Disk Warrior” when nothing is wrong, or even when something is wrong and you have backups, which you must have. Disk Warrior is a data-salvage tool, not a maintenance tool, and you will never need it if your backups are adequate. Don’t waste money on it or anything like it.

  • Why is my payment method declined. I ask the bank and they told that's no any problems with my card also i used my card on booking and amazon and everywhere and it's ok

Last night I attempted to purchase an app from the App Store on my iPhone 5s The previous day I had purchased an app with no issues, and this time was told that my payment method was invalid. When I clicked 'Continue' to fix my information, everything was correct so I re-inputted my credit card security code and tapped done. No, fail, declined.
I called my bank as I am currently vacationing in Libya  and if my debit card (the card my iTunes account uses) starts getting declined I will have issues. No, no problems, they had a note in my account that I was traveling, and there are no holds or flags on my spending. She also noted that the iTunes store had requested a verification of $0.99 but had not charged the card for the amount.

OOnce the $ .99 charge goes through to verify your payment method, you should be able to make your purchase.
wait 24-48 hours and try again.

  • Any experience with the NEC 3550A DVD drive?

I have a question for you - NEC's website and all the literature I can find shows Windows xp/2000 as a system req. but there is no indication that it is supported or will work in a Mac. I have seen literally hundreds of posts here highly touting this drive, but just wanted to pick your brains on this.. anything additional I will need to get it to work in a power mac dual G5, running tiger 10.4.4?
reason i am wanting to replace mine, is i get the 0x80020022 error when trying to burn DVDs.
I have tried deleting ~/library/caches as well as creating a new administrative user, and no luck.
    thanks,

No, I purchased the Pioneer DVR-110D drive thinking that since Apple uses them more often than not, that this would be a good choice. Updates are more frequent for the Pioneer drives though. It appears that advancements in DVD writing obsoletes this type of drive (or requires a firmware update) that was not seen with CD writing technology.

  • Has anyone had any problems with their PSDs getting corrupted using CS6 on an iMac?

I  bought my iMac (Refurbished 21.5-inch iMac 2.9GHz quad-core Intel Core i5) in February. Installed CS6 and other programs including fonts I normally use. Last night though, as I was saving my layouts to PSD and JPG, I noticed the graphics were corrupted and had funky neon lines and converted my white coloured text to black! I restarted my computer, changed the colours back to white, re-saved and they (gladly) turned out normal again. I've never had this problem with my CS5 in my 2009 Macbook Pro. I was told by a friend that it could be the fonts I installed.. So I validated my fonts, removed the ones with the yellow warnings.. but I'm just worried this will happen again if I can't resolve the problem properly. I have no clue how to resolve this. Thoughts? Help?

Hi Make an Appointment at Apple Store maybe a battery fault. Cheers Brian

  • HT5137 Has anyone had any trouble with apps disappearing and then not being able to re-install them? 5s

A lot of my apps have disappeared and I can't re download them. Matter of fact I can't download anything from the app store

god, i love it when i find answers to my own questions!  here is a work-around, not really a fix because you have to run this daemon that constantly performs read operations to prevent the drive from going into low power mode - which seems to be the source of this problem.  caution: this will drain your battery if you leave computer awake while not plugged in, but this solution darn well beats the issues i was having before with spinning beachball every couple minutes.. i was going crazy!  it only eats about 2-3% of cpu usage and i have not had the problem since i installed this daemon which sits in Library\LaunchDaemons (if you want to remove it later.)  also the developer leaves his email in the install file and he is very helpful.

  • Watching dvds with vlc-no right-click 'open with vlc' option as on the pc?

i searched discussions for this question but wasn't sucessful ... so here's my question:
i use a toshiba pc laptop and an iMac G5 ... in order to watch dvds (with different region codes) on my PC, I use VLC with great success ... I wanted to do the same on my iMac, but came across the following problem:
when I want to watch a DVD on the laptop, i simply right-click the title and go for 'open with VLC' (which gives me the menu and so on) ... when I try to do this on the iMac, however, there is no
'open with VLC' option when I right-click the DVD ... I can open single chapters of the DVD by opening the single .vob files, but I'm not happy with doing that ...
any ideas how to make watching DVDs with VLC on my iMac as easy as it is on my laptop?
    thanx for your help!

If you want all video DVDs to open in VLC, go to System Preferences>CDs & DVDs>When you insert a video DVD:>Open other application> and now select VLC.
This will open VLC, but the DVD will not automatically play, you have to go to File>Open Disc once in VLC.
One question though, why not use Apple's DVD player Application?

  • Good apps for watching movies??

Any recommendations on good apps for watching movies on the Droid X?
Actually, I intend to convert privately owned movies on DVDs into movie format files and then transfer these files to my Droid X.
So any recommendations on apps for movie/video file players on the Droid X, and any recommendations for apps that convert DVD movies into files that can be watched on the Droid X with a suitabe app?
Multiple suggestions/ratings of different apps would be most welcome!
I hope everyone is enjoying their Droids/Droid X's.
    Take care,

this is the pro version. i use the free version. it's called "any video converter." i have never tried to convert directly from a dvd though. however, i believe they are .avi files? if so, they are supported. it is extremely easy and i love it. but like i said, i've never tried directly from a dvd. so far i've only converted downloads to my devices.
    here's a nice top 10 review:

they all cost $ but i'd think some (like any video converter) have free versions that are slightly stripped down.

  • Vertical green lines while watching DVD on M40-148

When I try to watch video or DVD on my new laptop there is several vertical green dotted lines across the screen.
Why is that? And how do I get rid of them?

    Hello guys
It is very strange issue. A friend of mine has also M40 and I have tested playing DVD films and everything works fine. It is very strange that you see those lines just while DVD player runs. Something like that should not happen.
In my opinion you should reinstall the unit with recovery DVD and dont make any installation. Immediately after operating system installation try to watch DVD using preinstalled DVD player. If the problem persist contact service partner and let them check the unit. The unit is pretty new and warranty is still valid.
As far as I know the recovery image is tested and something like that should not happen.
    Good luck!

  • Can't watch DVDs or play games on Equium A60

    Hi
I updated my BIOS about three months ago because I was having issues with ati2dvag.dll, and that seems to have solved the problem. I tried every fix I could find for that particular BSOD including changing the driver for my PCI-to-PCI bridge. Only the BIOS update seems to have cured that for good.
However I've since discovered that I can't watch DVDs on my laptop, or play any games with 3D content. I use WinDVD to watch DVDs, and it keeps bringing up a message telling me to lower my screen resolution or change to a lower refresh rate. However, when I do this it still doesn't play the DVD.
On trying to run a game (in this case Lemmings Revolution), the game began to load to a black screen before giving me the error message "3D accelerator not detected".
Any help would be gratefully received, as I can't work out what to do!

Cheers - Direct3D is apparently unavailable, but all the drivers are final versions as recommended. I suppose it's possible they've become corrupted, but it says 'No problems found'. Any ideas? I'm reluctant to interfere with DirectX without knowing what I'm doing.

  • How do I turn off computer monitor when watching DVD movie on TV monitor?

I think this is really a Leopard question because it involves setting up 2 monitors in System Preferences within OSX. 1) I have a wide screen TV connected to my iMac (Intel White Late 2006) through the Mini-DVI port and a separate audio cable. This connection works fine. 2) The purpose of the TV screen is only to watch DVDs using the DVD player and iDVD in my iMac. 3) In System Preferences->Displays->Arrangement, both my computer monitor and the TV screen appear as separate monitors. I have the setting to mirror each other. With this setting, the DVD movie plays on both the iMac computer screen and on the TV screen. 4) FINALLY, MY QUESTION: When watching a DVD on the TV screen, I would like to turn off the monitor in my iMac so that the screen is dark (in sleep mode to save power, etc.); I want only the TV screen to display the movie. How do I turn off only the iMac screen? Thank you. Dale

That's impossible. It can only be done on a laptop but not on an iMac.

  • Any issues with latest 2014 ios update & Straight Talk

Hi, I've been with straight talk for about 2 weeks without any problem - switching --porting--pics.....all went well . Now my phone ( iPhone 3c) shows iOS update waiting..
Due to all I have read here & there,I'm a bit uneasy to do the update. Has anyone had any issues with lates t2014 ios update using ST? Will it affect the working of the phone if I don't do update? Thanks for any input.

Hi, Glad  that worked for you. I don't know why this is happening other than to offer an opinion. This hardware acceleration was causing an issue with the previous version of FP also. I think that this technology is ready but the websites are not, youtube included.
The same thing happened with Flash Player for the mobile phones, Android in particular. Adobe was ready but had to wait on Google to catch up. So the users thot Adobe was at fault, but that wasn't the case. Google had to update and that was done with their 2.2 update. This is not an opinion however. I followed this because users were coming here asking why Flash Player wasn't available for their Android:-)
Adobe/Microsoft/Mac/Linux are all involved and if one advances a particular technology that effects the others, then each one must make a change for that technology to work. At least that's how I see it.
Thanks for marking your thread as answered
