Any HD for the Mac 512 ?

Hi,
I have a Mac 512 with a damaged FloppyDisk (the disks don't come out).
I couldn't find a HD 20.
My question:
Is it possible to connect (and boot with it) any other (HD-) bus?
perhaps wit husing an adapter (serial – SCSI) ?
The later models of the MAC had a SCSI port, I read.
Greetings from Germany

reusch,
This website will help you identify which floppy drives will work with your 512.
http://www.mandrake.demon.co.uk/Apple/drives.html
The external HD was not SCSI. It was called the HD20. It is not pictured on that site but they do discuss it in the "Macintosh 800K (M131)" information. It plugged into the floppy controller port. "The Mac 512K should use this [800k drive] as a second disk with the HD20 INIT installed on the internal 400K boot floppy."
It could have a system folder on it for booting. Those drives were very slow and we called them hockey pucks or door stops because that is all they were used for after the Mac Plus gave us SCSI ports.

  • FileVault Paused: any risk for the mac?

    Dear all,
I am not very original I will talk about FileVault that blocked in "Encryption paused" with the following text under the progress bar: "Connect power adapter to resume encryption". I have, however, a different question for which I didn't find any answer.
I got a new mac a few days ago, I did the mistake to allow FileVault during the setting up of the computer. FileVault worked fine and then stopped and stayed stuck as mentioned earlier. May be I disconnected the mac or wathever, I did paid that much of attention to it when setting up the computer to be honest.
Connection my power adapter does not change anything. I tried to reboot my mac in Recovery mode and repair my disk, it worked and I passed the different phases of the encryption; but at some point during the optimization phase it stopped again (this time I am sure I didn't disconnected it) and stay again with the text written earlier. My mac is running perfectly fine, not slow at all or whatever, and the only thing is I can see FileVault recovery is using a lot of battery when clicking on the battery.
I can no longer deactivate the encryption of the disk in disk utility while in recovery mode and I have thus to wait the end of FileVault process do deactivate it.
Should I worry about it? Is there is any risk for my computer (and may be my data) by having FileVault sticking in this mode? Risk either for the flash drive or the battery?
I have back-up of my data so I mainly worry for the hardware actually.
If not, my idea is to leave my computer like that, and hoping that it will resolve by it self at some point or with the next apple software update.
Thank you in advance for your answers.

Back up all data before proceeding. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Disk Utility.
In the Disk Utility window, select the icon of the startup volume from the list on the left. It will be nested below another disk icon, usually with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar. When prompted, enter the login password of a user authorized to unlock the volume, or the alternate decryption key that was generated when you activated FileVault.
Then, from the menu bar, select
              File ▹ Turn Off Encryption
    Enter the password again.
You can then restart as usual, if the system is working. Decryption will be completed in the background. It may take several hours, and during that time performance will be reduced.
If you can't turn off encryption in Disk Utility because the menu item is grayed out, you'll have to erase the volume and then restore the data from a backup. Select the Erase tab, and then select
              Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    from the Format menu.
You can then quit to be returned to the main Recovery screen. Follow these instructions if you back up with Time Machine. If you use other backup software, follow its developer's instructions.
Don't erase the volume unless you have at least two complete, independent backups. One is not enough to be safe.

  • Is there any spyware out there for the mac?

Been looking at spyware to monitor teenager's activities on the iphone 5. Seems they all want Jailbreak installed, but I understand that ruins the warranty on the phone. I don't want to do that, or anything illegal. But, we do need to monitor his activities. Any other programs out there? Thanks a ton. I know...the logical thing to do would be to take away the phone, but teachers contact him there, as well as sports coaches, and his own boss sends his hours there. And, with Find My Phone, we can track him. So, we would rather him have the phone, but need to watch it closer.
    Thanks.

I don't think there are any. Any kind of subscription service would require DRM. The only type of DRM that the iPods accept are Fairplay which is exclusively used by Apple.

Hello, I am running a Mac book pro soft. 10.5.8 version. Since June the current year I did not get any updates for the software or any kinds of the other application, in my opinion that's weird for such a company.
The problem that I have now is with the Iphone 5 which is not supported for the current Itunes and I can not download the Itunes 10.7 version. What I supposed to do in this case because I can not syncronize at all.
Please give me a hand as soon as possible.
    Many thanks

Mac OS X 10.5.8 is years old, 3 major versions out-of-date and unsupported at this point. You will never get any further updates for 10.5.8, and more and more applications will stop supporting 10.5.8 as time goes on. As mende1 points out, you can buy Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6), which will let you use your new iPhone with your computer, but you need to make sure your computer's hardware is supported. See the system requirements for Snow Leopard:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
If your computer cannot run Snow Leopard, you will need to either buy a new computer or abandon any thoughts of syncing the iPhone with that computer.
Also, note that you'll get far better integration of your iPhone and your Mac if you're using Lion (Mac OS X 10.7) or Mountain Lion (Mac OS X 10.8), which are required to use iCloud. Of course, the requirements of those systems are even steeper than those of Snow Leopard:

Hello! Tried unsuccessfully to restore my MBP, running the Mac OSX Lion, to factory settings. I keep getting the "can't download additional components for the Mac OSX Lion" error when reinstalling the OSX Lion. Any tips on how to resolve this problem?

    Hi
Given that your answer to 1. is 'pre-installed' and 3. is 'No', I think the only thing to do is to take it to an Apple store (ideally the one you bought it from) and have them reinstall it for you.
The intended solution in cases like yours is that you should be able to reboot and install even a wiped disk by using Apple's servers over the internet (you do this by restarting with 'command-r' and choosing 'reinstall Lion'). However if this isn't working for you then you need to get the store to do it. Don't let them fob you off with 'go home and try again'. Have them do it in the shop (you're still covered by Applecare warranty so it should cost you nothing save the inconvenience of the trip and possibly leaving the machine there while they fix it).
A reinstall should leave all your own personal data and programs in place.
Note for future: when you get it fixed, first thing to do is buy a cheap external drive and start keeping a backup (either Time Machine or clone with Carbon Copy Cloner).

I'm not sure where on the internet or which store you mean -- but if you mean an Apple advertisement on the internet and an Apple Store, note that there was an ad for MacBooks that showed them with a variety of stickers but Apple does't sell the stickers and not all of the ones shown in the ad were commercially available.

Any news on when the DTM for the Mac will be officially launched by RIM. I'm using the leaked version, which works but has some bugs however I think its excellent. I suspect the Official Release will handle some of these bugs.

As a new Mac owner and a BlackBerry Storm FAN - I am looking forward to it!
I have had a Curve and now the Storm and I can't wait to learn my Mac that I recently purchased! So glad that RIM is working on this for MAC users! I use Desktop manager faithfully on my PC!  It is going to be awesome!

What is the best external hard drive for the MAC Book Pro with Retina?
I was looking at WD MY PASSPORT FOR MAC and Toshiba. I want something that will work best with time capsule! Suggestions on the best external hard drive would be greatly appreciated!!!

A Time Machine backup drive should be substantially larger than the system drive.  If you have a 128 or 256 GB SSD then a 1 TB drive will suffice.  If you have a 512 GB SSD then a 2 TB drive will suffice.  As leroydouglas indicated any brand other than WD will do.
For 1 TB drives PlotinusVeritas gives some great suggestions here:

A 2 TB drive sold by Apple:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/H9378ZM/A/lacie-2tb-usb-30-porsche-design-p923 3-desktop-hard-drive
    $130
A 2 TB drive just as good for only $92.

  • Office for the Mac - file open slowness, freeze, or crash

When I select the File - Open window, any of the Office programs take a few minutes to display all of my files in the Documents folder. When they are finally displayed, any attempt to scroll through the list or go to a specific file results in the Mac's spinning wheel being displayed. Quite often, nothing happens after the wheel stops spinning. Sometimes, it just continues to spin. Consequently, it is almost impossible to use the File - Open window in Office to select a file to open. The only way I can do so is to use Finder to display my files in the Documents folder and then selecting them in that program's File - Open window.
When the wheel is spinning, Force Quit says that the specific Office program being used is "not responding." Usually, I use Force Quit to close down the Office program if it has frozen, crashed, or been slow using the File Open window.
I spent an hour yesterday with Microsoft Support on the problem. The conclusion of the tech was that I had too many files in my Documents folder. I pointed out that other programs such as FileMaker Pro didn't have this problem. The tech's response was that Office has to scan the entire Documents folder every time the File Open window is opened, but that FileMaker Pro stores a list of the last files in the Documents folder and doesn't rebuild the list every time.
I am skeptical of this "answer." The problem didn't exist until a few months ago.
My computer is a MacBook Pro 2.3gHz with 16 GB of RAM and a 750GB hard drive which has about 500GB free. This is a fairly fast machine with a Geekspeed of 10688. I was running the latest Mac OS Yosemite 10.10.1. The problem first surfaced with Office for the Mac 2008 about 3-4 months ago running Mac OS 10.10.1. I installed Office 365 yesterday, and and Mac OS Yosemite 10.10.2 today, and nothing changed.
The only solution that I know of is to take a lot of time to segregate my files in the Documents folder into more subfolders (I already have quite a few). That I am loath to do, because the solution doesn't work very well. It takes about a minute to select a subfolder in the File Open window, and then about another 30 seconds before Office allows me to scroll through a relatively small number of files (e.g., 100 files) in the subfolder.
When this question was posted to the Microsoft Community, I was directed to an article talking about problems with Office and Mac OS. None of the solutions worked, probably because the article considered only Office X and Office 2004 for the Mac and OS 10.2 and 10.3.
    Help, please!

    1) Verify that Office is fully updated. v14.4.7
    2) I suggest you run Font Book and vailidate your Fonts. Microsoft installs duplicate fonts and after you clean up your fonts, this has often fixed odd issues with Office.
Office 2011 Duplicate Fonts to Delete
    3) Delete the com.apple.LaunchServices file in your User's Library/Preferences folder. Log out under the Apple in the Menu bar and test. More info
    If this fails to fix....
Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or if it's your User's folder that contains the problem.
Put a few test files in the Shared folder. Data in the Shared folder can be accessed by another User. When you "Switch Users", you can access the files in the shared folder. After you log into the new test User, drag from Shared (it actually copies). Put the test files in Documents.
Open Word. It won’t be in the Dock in the new User. Go to Applications to open.
Do you still see the issue?
If yes, you can eliminate the number of files in your Documents folder.
If no, then you might want to do a clean up in Documents.
*Remember to drag files back from Shared when you log into your main User.
