Any hints on exceptionhandling / errornumbers / logging?

Hi,
I'm trying to create a class which will log errors and debug-info to a file, and handle errors (log to file, show on screen, or throw again).
For the sake of finding errors back in the 1000+ classes we work with here, it would be nice to give each error an ID or something, like an errornumber.
Another idea we thought about is to make use of logging errors in xml-format, to find and filter easily on them. (So when we get a logfile back from one of our customers, we can easily see which errors occured, without having to read the entire document...)
But when I started to search around on the internet for usefull tips/hints/articles/guidelines, I was surprised to find so little information on this subject.
Is erverybody out there still logging all errors to commandprompt? Or is it all a big secret? ;)

Log4j is a logging framework being used widely. Here's the link-

As far as numbering the errors goes, it's a common way to go for handling large number of errors. We usually use error tags, which also help in looking up the appropriate internationalized (localized) error messages.
