Any hope for a restore?

OK, please be very gentle with me here. I am literally having the worst day of my life. I came home and found that my (evicted) roommate had hacked into my computer - in an attempt to steal it and reinstalled the OS software to a fresh new user. He was caught by the neighbor trying to take it out of the apartment, but in the meantime, my information is all gone now. 15 years of graphic design work. And I'm looking for a job now and need to show past projects. I know what you're saying ... should have had a backup. I DID have a Lacie backup drive, but he got away with that. I am beyond distraught. I guess for extra fun he also closed all of my online accounts that had the passwords saved in Firefox. Again, will not do that again.
So I'm wondering - and I imagine what the answer will be - but is there anyway that old data is underneath this new install and hasn't been overwritten yet? I don't know what i'm going to do ... I'm so distraught I thought I would at least ask. Thx

I have the 24" one. I don't know how to answer your other questions ... I'm not wildly tech savvy. It says I have roughly 580G available now and I know before I probably had around 300G I was using.
Then you've got either a 640 GB or 1 TB drive. I'd guess 640.
That means there's probably enough space at the "end" of the drive to install OSX and a few utilities, such as a +Data Recovery+ app, if you want to.
the OS install disc was lying on the desk and now the computer looks like a brand new screen with no extra folders, etc. I don't even have to enter a password to log on.
Good. That's a start.
The longer you use that drive, the more things will be overwritten and +*not recoverable*+. And yes, that includes using Safari (it keeps your browsing history, icons, and various other things); and your Mac is busily making log files, caches, etc., any or all of which may be writing over your data +*right now.+* I did mean +*Stop using the drive IMMEDIATELY.+*
So you have two choices:
Power it down until you can find a service, or another Mac running Leopard or Snow Leopard you can use with a +Data Recovery+ app.
Make a second partition on your internal HD, install OSX on it, and run from that, instead of the normal one. You can install a +Data Recovery+ app on that partition and, hopefully, recover some data.
If you're up for it, start your Mac up from the Install disc, per the yellow box in #1 of [Formatting, Partitioning, Verifying, and Repairing Disks|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/DU.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Using Snow Leopard+ forum). Do +*nothing else+* in that section.
Go to #3 there and follow the instructions to "split" your existing partition (almost certainly named "Macintosh HD") and make a second one of about 100GB. Name it "Emergency" or something distinctive. If it won't make one of 100 GB, try smaller sizes.
Then quit Disk Utility, return to the Installer, and install OSX on the new partition. When your Mac boots up again, it will be running from that partition, and you'll see the Welcome video again. Set up a user account, etc. You won't be using the other partition at all.
I don't have access to an external drive as he managed to get that out in his bag without the neighbor realizing, but I can get one soon. So I shouldn't be using the internet or anything? I'm not using any apps other than Safari. In fact, whatever he did wiped out all of my apps. I'll have to reinstall all of my Adobe, etc.
You'll have to do that anyway. You won't be able to recover complex apps (that came with their own installers), and may or may not be able to recover simple ones (that you just put into your Applications folder.)
But you may be able to recover data your data. You won't know that for a while, unfortunately.
Hang in there.

  • Any hope for music folders on the ipod Touch?

    Hi All
It is getting VERY difficult to manage my music on my 32 Gb iPod Touch. I have hundreds of playlists (for example one playlist for every version of a classical piece; on playlist for a pop album, etc. etc.)
Is there any hope for music folders as in iTunes on the Touch?
    ed

Why do you have a playlist for every album? If your tracks are tagged properly, you can just use the album menu on the Touch.
As for when/if there will be folders on the Touch, the only people who know are probably working under non-disclosure agreements. Who knows what will change when version 2.0 of the software comes out next month.
    Best of luck.

  • Any hope for Powermac G4 400 mhz?

I have GB running on a Powermac G4 400 mhz and, not surprisingly, it gives me the "disk too slow" message after more than 3 or 4 tracks. Without investing too much $, is there any hope for upgrading this to a more workable solution for GB, or would I be better off going to a mini w/1.42 Ghz? I'm concerned that the mini might not work that much better.

    I'll offer an opinion...
If you can slip a Mini and an external FireWire drive into your budget, that's the way I would go (If you're willing to turn a screwdriver and shop around online for a few weeks, a nice sized FW drive and enclosure can be purchased separately for a total under $100. For some more money a very nice sized drive can be had)
The weakest link in the Mini is the very slow HD it has. Add the FW drive and you'll have a lot more machine than I use as my recording machine in the studio (800Mc iBook)
Naturally it depends how far/hard you plan to go/push.
Effects and software instruments are very processor intensive. Audio is mostly HD intensive.

  • Any hope for syncing a "LG Dare" (Verizon)

Well as i'm sure many of you have seen the new "3G iPhone Competitor" will be released on verizon this week. any hope for syncing with iCal and or Contacts?
Please don't rip on me for this I just cannot afford a plan on ATT.

This is great... I got my music on my dare even under the "My Music" Folder on the phone using the method above (Bluetooth Exchange)....
    one problem...
theres no way to get it off after you do that.... if you try to delete songs off your phone via Bluetooth Exchange it says "Last Operation Failed Bad Request..."
and of course theres no way to delete them from the phone... that would be too simple (thanks LG)
and since I have a mac....
i cant use the verizon sync program to get them off...
so for now i only have 4 songs on my Dare... but they are on my internal memory... perhaps... eternally.
Please reply if you have any advice...
    maybe i missed something ...

  • Is there any hope for a Nano 6th gen that went through the washing machine?

Is there any hope for a Nano 6th Gen that went through the washing machine?  All of the devices contents are showing up in iTunes when connected but the device itself is not working.

    Hello kpratta,
There is some hope. I have heard of someone putting the ipod in a bag of dry rice and putting the bag in a dark place for a 4-5 days. After that they used this:
    www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
This has the best chance. The rice absorbs any liquid in the ipod.
    Hope this helps.

  • Any hope for a liquified macbook?

Water was spilled on my Macbook last night. Once it had a few hours to dry, I powered it on. Sadly, when I got to the main log-in screen, everything was frozen... from the mouse to the keyboard. Any hope for this Macbook?

    Hi
With any liquid damage you run the risk of corroding internal components. Depending on where the spillage was and which direction the liquid 'ran' there's the potential of 'shorting' the smaller yet crucial components. Your next problem is the cost or repair. If the the MacBook is still under warranty it won't be covered for accidental or willful damage. Additionally the price of the replacement part is at least one/third more expensive than the cost of an exchange part. Apple keep the prices down on components that fail using an exchange system. If there's damage to the component for whatever reason the part would be replaced with a completely new part.
I would pursue an insurance claim if I was you. Most standard house insurance policies will cover individual items up to a certain price.
    HTH?

  • Any hope for a 5c retrieved from water immediately?

Is there any hope for a iPhone 5c that was dropped in the water?  Put it in rice for 18 hours and it started up.  Shut it down and tried a little later and NOTHING.

Overnight may be enough if it was a splash of water (ie: you left the phone near a sink while washing dishes, forgot to dry your hands before touching it, and some water got in the dock connector/headphone jack), but if it was fully submerged and was powered on at the time, odds are it's been damaged already. It may power on and seem fine after a week, but it's very likely you will need to replace it much sooner than you'd expected.
Apple will replace it for a fee ($269 is the cost listed here for Out-of-Warranty service).

  • Any hope for Spaces working in PSE 8.0?

I just discovered the power of using Spaces in OS X 10.6.2, and was disappointed to find that PSE 8 is the only program I regularly use that doesn't support this feature. Any hope for this bug being fixed in future updates?

    Hi,
I just checked on OS X 10.6.2 that PSE 8 is functional and support the Spaces feature. It is working for me.
Are you observing any specific problem?
    Thanks,

  • I accidentally washed my iPod nano. Is there any hope for it?

I stuck my iPod nano in my pocket, and yes, forgot to take it out before my sister washed our clothes. Right after it got washed, I plugged it in to my computer, and it did turn on, just with a little distortion on the screen. It has been about a month now though, and the iPod won't turn on at all, even when it is plugged in. But iTunes recongizes that the iPod is plugged in.
Is there any hope for my iPod, or would it be better just to save for a new one?

I think that when you turned it on after it was washed, that was the end. If it's been a month and won't turn on, I would assume it probably won't ever. Start saving your money. Apple has refurbished models that carry the same warranty as new units and they are $50 less. Check these out:

What a colossally bad idea!  To anyone reading this thread DO NOT DO THIS!!!  Once anyone other than an Apple Authorized Service Provider (and that doesn't automatically mean your carrier, just FYI) opens up the device, then ALL options from Apple are gone, permanently.

Probably not. First of all, 48 hours is not enough. 5-7 days is better. Secondly, if you did not turn it off the very instant you retrieved it, it probably did worse damage. Even if it powers on, it's very unlikely it will function 100%.

  • Is there any hope for us here?

I live in the Caribbean (Dominican Republic). I see the iPhone getting released in a lot of big countries, but I don't see Apple releasing the iPhone in other countries like mine.
I have seen iPhones activated here, but as you know they are being ilegaly activated with the hacking options available, and with every new update the hacks get frustrated.
Is there any hope for the iPhone being released in countries like mine here in the caribbean? What chances do you see for us here? Are we destined to live without the iPhone or with an hacked-outdated iPhone?

The best thing to do is keep watching for announcements from Apple on when the iPhone will be coming to the Dominican Republic, since this is a user to user forum no one would be able to give you an answer.

I have not had any experience in getting any devices repaired so I'm not sure which store to resort to. An official Apple store should more than likely get you what you need, but I'm guessing it's probably more expensive. (if any cost for your situation)
I hope you get your problem resolved.

So I went to turn on the ipad2, and there is an icon telling me to connect it with my MacBook to restore it. It worked fine the night before. Anyway, is there any way to get back what was on it. I am mostlry concerned with photographs. I am ashamed to say that I did not back it up as often as I should have.
