Any ideas on a good printer (ink or laser) ?

With my imac incompatable Canon s200 giving up on me, I am now looking for a half decent, affordable printer, not bothered about an all in one. Can anyone point me in the right direction. I find printers a bit of a mine field.

Andy

what are you using it for?
text documents?
business graphics?
text & business graphics?
artwork?
photos?
Do you need color? What size output do you need? What kind of paper are you planning on printing on? Do you have speed requirements? What's your budget for the printer itself, and what's the budget for consumables? Do you want a USB or a network printer, and if network, wired or wireless?

  • Any ideas on a good way to create a digital album for photos, videos and text info?

I would like to create on my iMac an electronic album that has pages that allow me to place text, a thumbnail that would activate a video, and some text to explain the contents?  I have looked at a variety of  multimedia software like Powerpoint and am testing Googles Picaca but so far none look to do the job.

True that no two monitors ever match ... that's why engineers claim that NTSC really stands for Never Twice the Same Color. But the point of NOT using a consumer set for critical monitoring is that almost all consumer sets are designed to "correct" the incoming image somewhat (depending on model). So what you're seeing isn't necessarily what you really have in FCP.
On the other hand, a properly calibrated and aligned pro monitor doesn't add or take away from the image so what you see on the screen is going to be pretty darn accurate.
The same applies with audio monitors. Don't use consumer speakers that "color" the sound. Use reference monitors that are design to output the real sound as it was intended.
Once all the color grading and audio tweaking is done, then feel free to view on any consumer set that you want. Or view both at the same time while editing. That's why I use the Samsung 36" LCD.
if you are a male you have some color blindness. All males do, that's why the colorists at the BBC are all female.
Now that I know that, I finally understand why women know so many different color shades while most guys only know the typical Crayola 12.

  • Any ideas for a good backup workflow?

Simple question, but I've read a lot of different ideas. I simply want to backup my photos and want to know what the experts are doing.
What's the safest/easiest way to back up photo library? I use Aperture to create a Library vault on a separate external hard drive which is always hooked up to my system. But if my house were to burn down I'd lose everything. So, should I simply set up two vaults on two separate hard drive and rotate them once a month keeping one of them offsite, or should I make a duplicate of the original library and rotate that monthly with an offsite hard drive? What are the experts doing?
    Thanks,
    Brian

One of the nice things about a Mac is that backup is really easy. I'm paranoid, so I:
-- Run Time Machine on a RAID, and,
-- Use SuperDuper! to clone my drives every morning at 0300, and
-- Use CrashPlan to do off site backups of my most essential data.
(When I lived overseas, I cloned everything every month or so and rotated the hard drive out of country.)
I have a managed library, so I do make a vault of that on another drive, but there really isn't much point. It is much better to have a comprehensive, automatic backup of your whole system than to spend time worrying about just your images.

Basically i cant print checks in 5.0 only in 3.17

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You have to upgrade Mac OS X. First, open  > About this Mac, and tell me what processor you have. If it's a Intel Core Solo, Duo or 2 Duo, you can upgrade to Mac OS X Snow Leopard.
First, buy Mac OS X Snow Leopard > http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard Make a backup of your files, insert the DVD and upgrade to Snow Leopard. After upgrading, open  > Software Update, and install 10.6.8. Finally, open  > Software Update, and install the most recent iTunes.
If you want to install iTunes 10.7, download it from this page > http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1576

  • I am looking for a large external storage solution, any ideas?

Hi all, I have some questions and am looking for some people with a bit more experience to help me out.
I have a massive music/movie/photo//and TV show collection which is currently stored on 4 x 1tb hard drives. I use 2 of them for storage and the other 2 to back it all up. I use DeJa Vu to do daily backups and all works perfectly.
I would like more space, but more external hard drives seems silly, it takes up lots of space and you run out of ports eventually. I would like to get an external 4-8 bay enclosure to hold everything. The problem is that companies with good solutions all make you buy the drives installed at a massive markup, which is unacceptable!
Questions: if I had an 8 drive enclosure connected to my mac, would it show up as just 1 giant hard drive on my iMac? I Would like to see it as 8 drives so I can use DeJa Vu, or something like it, to do my backups and keep everything in order (And so that malfunctioning drives could be removed without destroying the entire set up.)
Any ideas on a good way to go? I could sell my 4 drives for about 400$ and am willing to invest a bit more to get set up (1.5tb drives are getting really cheap!). Any and all ideas welcome, thank you so much in advance!
    Tim

OWC has the Drobo for what seems like a good price (for a Drobo), and it is empty.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Data%20Robotics%2C%20Inc%2E/DRBSHRB/
A Drobo is like a RAID, except the data is redundantly stored using fancy built-in software, so you don't have to back it up to another location or worry about losing data if one drive fails. You can get more details at
    http://www.drobo.com/
OWC sells most of their enclosures as a kit, where you add your own drive(s).

Since upgrading to ios 8.0.2, airprint will give error (no printer found" After a reboot, it locates and prints, then next time same error code. Any ideas?

    Hi bdtcop,
I understand that you are experiencing an issue with AirPrint. Here is an article for you with some troubleshooting steps that may be helpful for resolving this issue:
    About AirPrint
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4356
    If you're unable to print
Check these things if you are unable to print, or if you see the message "No AirPrint Printers Found."
Make sure your printer has paper, and enough ink or toner installed.
Make sure your printer is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your iOS device.
Make sure your printer has power and is turned on. Try turning your printer off and then back on again to see if it resolves your issue.
Check to see if your printer has any error lights or indicators displayed on the printer's control panel. Check the documentation that came with your printer to clear any errors displayed.
Check with your printer's manufacturer to see if any firmware updates are available for your printer. Check your printer's documentation or contact the printer vendor for more information. A firmware update may be available, even if you just bought your printer.
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. Have a good one!

  • Any ideas how to fix my mac book pro to canon pixma mp640 printer connection?

Anyone have any ideas how to fix my mac book pro to canon pimxa mp640 printer link? The two are connected manually yet the ! remains on the 'print' page next to the printer name. it was working fine until i changed the ink cartridges. Without the wireless password - which I've never had and don't supposedly need as it's not a wireless connection, I am being prevented from resuming printing.

If it's on a windows network you have to enter your (windows) log in (name/password) credentials.
This should be a 1 time event. It will remember it thereafter.

  • Any ideas on where I can print a document?

I've got a Pages document that I want to print and my printer isn't good enough for this particular project. Any ideas on where I might go? I realize that we probably don't live in the same community but if you've got general ideas that's what I'm looking for. I do have an Apple store in town and I didn't think of them until now. I wonder if they offer this service for a fee?
    Thanks.
    Chip

Generally, those places have both Macs and PCs, so they would probably have Pages.
Can you get the resolution you need by printing to PDF in Pages?

  • My Time Capsule expired and no longer works. My printer (a HP) will now not work as it still wishes to connect through the Time Capsule. It will not allow itself be recognised through a USB connection to my Mac. Anyone got any ideas?

My Time Capsule expired and no longer works. My printer (a HP) will now not work as it still wishes to connect through the Time Capsule. It will not allow itself be recognised through a USB connection to my Mac. Anyone got any ideas?

You will need to install the printer on your Mac
Open System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
    Open Print & Fax
Click the + (plus) button at the bottom of the printer list
Wait for your printer to appear in the next box, then click it to highlight it
Click Add at the lower right
Be sure to select the correct printer when you try to print as you will see your printer listed twice. Good idea to make the printer now installed on your Mac the default printer so you do not have to choose which printer to use each time you want to print.
You can also go into Print & Fax, select the printer associated with the Time Capsule and click the - (minus) button if you want to delete that location.

  • Acrobat Pro 8 will not print some graphics, any ideas?

I am printing from Word 2007 to an Acrobat Pro 8 PDF.   When I do so, some of the graphics will not show up.   They seem to be in the document as when I highlight them, they show they are blocked and I can actually copy the stuff by highlighting it and copying, but it will not print or display.
This seems to be a new problem, as it worked fine, then I am not sure what trigered it, but now it will not print all the graphics.   The graphics are just JPGs
Note the document looks good on the screen, but when I create a PDF or print the PDF, it will not print.
I also see this a lot when I use my PrintShop Mail program, which uses Acrobat to genterate it files.
    Any ideas?
    Regards,
    Geoff

Since Acrobat is not an Apple product, you would probably be better off posting your question on Adobe's own forums as they would be geared more toward the issue than an Apple forum:

  • Connected wirelessly to Canon printer MX340. Duplex printing option is grayed out for me but not on my daughter's non-Mac laptop or husband's PC which is connected to the printer. Mine has two-sided option available at the Apple store. Any ideas?

We use a Canon MX340 series printer/fax/scanner. My husband has his PC hooked to it and my daughter prints wirelessly from it with no problem with her non-Mac laptop. I have trouble printing. Often it does not print and I have to delete the job from the queue. Other times it will print OK but two-sided printing is always grayed out in my printing options. When I took it to the Apple store and printed on their network (selecting their printer) the two-sided option was available. Makes me think the printer is set up wrong, but I am not certain. A fw times at home when trying to print I got an error message about incompatible fonts, but it printed anyway after deleting the job and starting over. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks

    OK, just an update.
Two years into this, I still find I can only do full duplex printing by using Windows XP running inside of VMWare. I've had occasional, ephemeral luck with duplex printing, but nothing long lasting.
I've tried this in Tiger and Leopard (now at 10.5.6), and I've had this issue with Canon printers MP780 iP4300 and MP610, direct connected to my Core2Duo 17" MBP. I also have this issue when printing over a network, but that's a much harder problem to solve.
Currently, this is my #1 most pressing issue for my Mac, because not being able to print from a computer when you print a lot is a really big drag, and using VMWare all the time is also a really big drag. Other people posting seem to be able to print in Duplex using the very same printers. What could be wrong with my MBP? I see the duplex box option, but most of the time it's grayed out as if my printer doesn't support duplex.
I've tried direct selecting printer drivers from the system preferences, but nothing seems to have an effect. And this is off of a clean Leopard install.
My wife now has similar problems with her new MBP - the Canon print drivers (CUSP & non CUSP) aren't allowing the Duplex box to be checked.
I am willing to pay good money to anyone who thinks they can fix this problem.
    Thank you,
    - Jeff
