Any ideas on how/if this can be done

Is there a way to get Coldfusion to be able to recognize new
inserted data
and 'refresh' the screen? I guess the best example of the
idea would be for
a chat room where when the user enters new text, it
automatically appears on
the screen. I am using the cf widgets typed Flash.

ColdFusion? No. It runs on the CF server, not on the client
and cannot
have a hand in initiating activity from the client.
You need to use something like Flash or - buzzword of the
month - AJAX.
(I don't know what you mean by "I am using the cf widgets
typed Flash", but
maybe you're already part-way down the Flash route...?)
