Any image I open in CS4 has a gray colourcast - why?

I do most of my photo image work in Lightroom having firstly upgraded from v 2.6 to 3 and latterly 3.3. I then do more work and print using CS4 (extended). A couple of weeks ago a nikon raw image opened in CS4 from Lightroom using the image plus all of the Lightroom edits was very dull had lost its vibrancy and looked far worse than the original nef file from the camera.
Following discussion on the lightroom forum I believed the problem lay with an apparent incompatability between lightroom v 3.3 and CS4 the former having been built for CS5. Following the initial upgrade to LR v 3.3 I noticed no problems with transferring an image from LR to CS4. But now ANY image from any source of any file format when opened in CS4 is awful. Even an image that has been modified previously using the software in the days when it all worked as it should.
I have a MacPro running Snow Leopard 10.6.5, 2xquad processors, twin graphics cards and 6gb of ram enough whereby I have never experienced anything but high speed operation. Prior to this problem I have been using the set-up for 18months with varying versions of lightroom being used for the main work with CS4 being used for specialist work without a problem.
My Lightroom uses ACR 5.7. Even if I use NX2 to enhance the image instead of LR I still get the awful results when I transfer that file to CS$ either as a raw file or a TIFF with the edits rendered.
The colour space selected throughout is Adobe RGB 1998.
Does anyone have any idea what has gone wrong?

Hi Chris
I did that and do you know it seems to have sorted out the problem. It is nice t
have that happen OK now (edit in photoshop CS4 from LR 3.3 including LR edits)
but on the last number of raw images they won't open at all in CS4 after getting
the message 'Lightroom was unable to prepare the selected file at
/Volumes/Images/Raw Images/D3s Raw/Malaysia:Penang 2011 Raw/D3s0115.NEF for
editing.
It will not be opened.' now that has only started as has a little 'i' button
lower RHS of image area in LR3.3 which says 'update to current process'.
But is great to have solved one issue but now what looks like a smaller lesser
one to contend with. Not sure if it is from the camera or in LR or CS4.
Thanks.

    It depends, but it could either be the Grid or Pixel Grid under View>Show.

  • Bridge CS4 has LONG delay in opening the first image

    Photoshop CS4 upgrade was my Christmas present this year. I've been fighting this annoying "problem" ever since then...
    I DO see this "problem" on my desktop PC, which is a Dell XPS-400 PC (with 2 GB of memory) running Windows XP (Media Center Edition) with SP3 installed. I DO NOT see this "problem" on my laptop, which is a Dell XPS-1530 (4 GB of memory) running Windows Vista SP1. I installed the Photoshop CS4 software exactly the same way on both machines, and I have the preferences set the same in both Photoshop and Bridge (and Camera Raw) on both machines.
    Here's the situation: I first open Photoshop CS4 and then click on the Bridge icon in the Application Bar to open Bridge. When I use Bridge to open a photo, by either double-clicking the thumbnail, or right-clicking on the thumbnail and choose "Open" from the context menu, there is a 42 second delay before Photoshop opens the file. This long delay only occurs when opening the very first file.
    Once that first image file is opened, double-clicking any thumbnail in Bridge will have it open in Photoshop CS4 in about 2 seconds. There will never be another long delay in having Bridge pass a file to Photoshop (or Camera Raw) again - until I close the applications and restart them. Once I restart the applications, the first photo takes 42 seconds to open....
    This delay does not occur in opening the first image file if I right-click on the thumbnail in Bridge CS4 and choose "Open With" and manually choose Photoshop CS4.
    Even if that is how I open the first (or several) image file(s), the first time I try to open a file from Bridge by double-clicking on a thumbnail (or right-click on a thumbnail and choose "Open") there will be that annoying 42 second delay before it opens.
    It does not matter what the file format the first image file is (JPG, PSD, TIFF, or DNG), or what the file format of any subsequent image file is. As long as I do not close the Bridge and Photoshop applications, any subsequent file will be passed from Bridge to Photoshop in only a couple of seconds.
    I have manually set the File Name Extensions in Windows XP, and in the Preferences in Bridge. Both have been set to open the file types listed above with Photoshop CS4.
    I have uninstalled CS4, and have used two seperate Registry cleaners (CCleaner and jv16 Power Tools) before re-installing Photoshop CS4. This had no effect on this situation. I've run "chkdsk C: /r" several times, with no problems reported.
    I have been searching through these forums for over 2 weeks now, and I have not seen anyone else report such a problem. I use my XP desktop much more than my Vista laptop, so I'd really like to fix this situation, but I don't know what else to try.

    Don,
    Thanks for all of your suggestions. I tried them all, but the problem remains exactly as it was. To properly document my efforts:
    In Bridge's Preferences, I Purged and Compacted the Bridge Cache, then changed it's location to D:\Bridge_Cache (D:\ is a second physical internal SATA drive).
    I can not tell the exact size the Cache is set to, but the slider in Bridge's Preference is very close to the left end (10,000) of the slider.
    The Windows Page File is set to 3072 MB min and 4096 max, and it is entirely on the D:\ drive. (I have 2GB of physical RAM in the PC.)
    I defragmented the C:\ drive using Diskeeper 2008 Pro Premier, and even ran a Boot Time Defrag.
    Rather than set some exclusions for Norton Anti-Virus, I jsut disbled that Virus checking program for all of my experiments.
    I deleted the Bridge Preference File by holding down the Ctrl key as Bridge was restarted.
    I even deleted the entire contents of the C:\Windows\Prefetch folder. I then rebooted the PC - twice. I then re-disabled Norton Anti-Virus.
    The PC is approaching 3 years of age, but it is a 3.2 GHz Pentium D machine with 2 GB of RAM and two internal SATA drives. Every other application that I run on this machine responds reponsively. Again it is only the FIRST image file that I have Bridge hand off to Photoshop (or Camera Raw) that takes forever. The second and subsequent image files take a second or two.... That doesn't sound like it's an "old hardware" problem to me.
    I'm willing to try anything else that you, or anyone else would like to suggest.
    Thanks
    Gregg Mack

  • HT2946 Why is the contrast of my images totally different when processed and then opened in CS4?  Does anybody else have this issue?

    Why does the contrast in my images processed in Aperture look markedly different when opened in CS4?  The images look fab on the screen in Aperture - even if these are then opened in CS4 from Aperture they look different  - much flatter.  This is a new issue.  I am a wedding photographer and an album processed in Aperture has been sent back by my wedding album printer saying the images all lack contrast!  Can anybody shed any light on this!  I have checked colour spacing etc!

    I Also have this problem!!
    In my situation, the screen simply started exhibiting the same symptoms a few weeks ago (early February) for no apparent reason.  At first I thought the screen was dead, but discovered the heat solution by accident.  Now I turn it on and keep it from going to sleep until I go to bed.  Thank goodness the battery is still awesome on this thing.
    I bought it new and still has the original screen, I keep it at home (never below 62 degrees).  Coincidentally, this happened a day or two after the expiration of the warranty!!  Any help figuring this one out would be eternally appreciated.

  • Opening any image in Photoshop desaturates and darkens it

    Hello!
    For approx the last 2 months whilst using photoshop CS5 (which I have been since purchasing in Dec 11 without issues), I'll process and images as a TIFF or high res JPEG with an Adobe RGB 1998 colour profile in Lightroom 3 or Capture Pro 7, then open in Photoshop with a working space and proof preview space of Adobe RGB 1998 and the image appears darker. I can correct it by adding a saturation layer, (+28 sat) a curves layer (+ 10% brightness) and a contrast layer (-15 contrast). I then save the image and open it again in bridge or lightroom an, whether I flattened it or not, the image then opens in all other programs with the same issues that photoshop gave it, i.e. darker, more contrasty and less saturation. My workaround has been to open all in bridge, then open in photoshop from here for all my retouch work, then open in lightroom and fix the colour/curves/sat problems. Not an ideal work around and incredibly time consuming! Help!!
    This of course also affects my images when I open the high res through bridge as processed through Capture or Lightroom then use Bridge Image Processor to export all as low res adobe 1998 - they all come out darker etc.
    I'm running the programs on a Macbook Pro 2009 model, vs 10.8.4, and my screen is calibrated regularly.
    Thanks,
    Jess

    Sounds like you did not use Adobe RGB as the target spec for your monitor calibration, but instead a custom RGB setup based on a 6500k whitepoint or something like that. Could also be a bad profile. In any case, before spending endless hours trying to chase phantoms, it would be best to reset your monitor and color settings to factory default, then create a new calibration from scratch.

After that Photoshop doesnt respont and I have to force close it from task manager.

    Well, what more do you need to know? Update your graphics drivers and configure them suitably.

    Reader XI has suddenly stopped loading any images in pdf's.  Any idea why?

    I tried to got to edit to follow the suggestion of ~graffiti I found that the "Show Large Images" was already checked.  I since have found that if I download the .pdf file and then open the download everything appears as it should.  Previously, when I clicked on the emailed .pdf file it would automatically open without having to download the file.  I'm not sure why it is requiring the extra steps of downloading the and then opening the downloaded file before the images with appear.  Any ideas why the extra steps are now required?

  • Suddenly can't open any image files in PSE11

    Last used PSE11 a couple of months ago. The organizer and Elements worked normally. Today I attempted to open some JPEG files in Elements on my PC and nothing shows up in the photo bin or the editing window. Tried with a varieity of JPEGs and non of them open in PSE11. Used the Organizer with no problems but Elements simply won't load any image file of any type.
    Opened a couple of my images in a photo editor that came with my PC and Windows Paint with no problems. What the heck is going on here?

    When you say nothing is showing up, do you mean it is as if you didn’t use File / Open, or is it more that there is something but it is gray or white or black without any image detail?  If the latter, perhaps something like a video driver update or system-level change has made things incompatible with how PSE11 tries to display images.
    Have you rebooted?
    Have you reset your preferences?  You can do this by holding down Ctrl-Shift-Alt at the same time while PSE11 is starting up (or at least while the editor is starting up) and you’ll get a message about deleting the preferences file or not before you see the splash screen.   Various other key combinations will ask for an additional plug-ins folder or a different scratch disk location.  If you are going to delete your preferences file you might want to review the settings, first, in case there is something important you need to reconfigure once the preferences have been reset.

  • I have a LR 3.6  64 bit that refuses to open any images today

    I have a LR 3.6  64 bit that refuses to open any images today.  Computer restore point created  and used , Norton cleaned still not joy any ideas guys?

    Rose, the problem is that you've somehow managed to ask Lightroom create a catalog folder with the name of an existing photo file, which as you have seen causes problems in LR3 (the bug was fixed for later releases). The only reliable fix is to reset the Lightroom preferences file (so that it forgets about that invalid catalog, so stops trying to open it). C.frans has already given you a link to tell you how to reset the preferences, but if you need more detailed instructions you can find them here:

  • Open any image

    Hi,
    I found some code to open JPGs, but I need to be able to open any image file (or at least both JPG and GIF)... Could anyone please give me some help with this?
    FileInputStream fis = new FileInputStream(chooser.getSelectedFile());
    JPEGImageDecoder decoder = JPEGCodec.createJPEGDecoder(fis);
    img = decoder.decodeAsBufferedImage();
    fis.close();
    Thanks!!!

    A quick and easy way to load images of multiple types (png, jpg, gif etc) is to use the following code:
    Image image;
    image = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getImage(new URL("file:someimage.png"));
    In order for this to work, the image that you want to load has to be in the same directory as the class file that you are running. If the image is somewhere else, such as on the Internet or somewhere else on your harddrive, then simply modify the new URL() portion of the code to reflect the location of your image. If you need to make sure that the image has completely loaded before using it, such as if you want to get its width and height through code, then you would also attach a MediaTracker object to it, like the following:
    Image image;
    MediaTracker tracker;
    image = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getImage(new URL("file:someimage.png"));
    tracker = new MediaTracker(this); //The "this" should be something such as the canvas you're using
    tracker.addImage(image, 0);
    tracker.waitForAll(); //Wait for image to finish loading
    Hope that helps.

  • My cs4 has stopped opening.what should i do

    my cs4 has stopped opening.what should i do?

    Do you get any message when you try opening whichever CS4 program you are talking about?
    If you get no indications then try uninstalling CS4 using the cleaner tool which helps resolve installation problems for CS3 thru CS6 and for Creative Cloud :
    http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html
    Then reinstall and see if things clear up.

  • Can't open any image in CC after crash

    After a pc crash I am not any more able to open any image in Photoshop cc,  I can select an image, press load but nothing happens.
    I did an uninstall and reinstall, deleted all folders in AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC, deactivated OpenCL, still no luck.
    Any help is highly appreciated. Thanks.

    Try resetting preferences.  Start PS and immediately hold down ctrl alt shift keys.  If fast enough you will get a reset window.  File not affected by reinstall.

  • Any way to open new browser window without using image maps?

    Is there any way to open new browser window without using image maps? My code works fine in Firefox, but not in IE. There are 2 problems in IE: 1st is that the thumbnail images move up within their own borders & 2nd that when you click on an image it does open up a new browser window, but also redirects to the index page (in this case it's just a placeholder index page - the new one I've called index_new.html for the time being).
    Here is the link:
    http://www.susieharperdesigns.com/gallery_beads.html
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Your missing a value on the HREF.  In your code you have this:
    <area shape="rect" coords="-24,-9,106,144" href=" " onclick="MM_openBrWindow('gallery_bead1.html','','width=255,height=360')" />
    </map></div>
    and it should be this:
    <area shape="rect" coords="-24,-9,106,144" href="javascript:void()" onclick="MM_openBrWindow('gallery_bead1.html','','width=255,height=360')" />
    </map></div>
    If you fix the code on all your beads, it should work.
