Any importation crashes iMovie
Hi, I was wondering if someone could help me.
My iMovie was fine until a couple months ago. I used to be able to import Quicktime files, photos, etc into the clips panel, everything was great. But now, any time I try to drag anything into the clips panel, iMovie crashes. When I load the program again, it says files have been moved to the Trash, and if I try to view them, the whole thing just crashes again.
I left iMovie alone for awhile, since I don't use it much anyway. But I was just testing the program out today out of curiosity and I had nothing imported, I just tried to type a title and drag it to the main playhead.... and it crashed again.
I know very little about the innerworkings of computers, that's why I like Macs, so I can turn them on and they just work, but I fear there's something seriously wrong with this issue. Back when I first encountered this problem, I tried downloading a third party alternative to iMovie, only to find that importing files into it crashed it as well.
Can anyone tell me what's going on here? At first I thought it was an issue with Quicktime, but when the photo files crashed it too, that leads me to believe it's something else... God knows what, though. I tried repairing the disk permissions as that had been suggested in other threads, but it didn't help.
Do I need to reinstall iMovie somehow? Something, anything? Help!
Thanks in advance...
Heather
Hi Heather
Craches are hard to fix but there are some things to try out.
- You have repaired permissions - OK thats a good try
A. What QuickTime are You using: QT 6.5.2 (OK) or QT 7 - 7.1.2 (doubtful) ?
I would first locate iMovie pref file in User/Library I think and ends with .plist
something like > com.apple.iMovie.plist < or > com.apple.iMovie3.plist >
Those I would move to desktop first. Then run "Repair permissions" again.
If You can start from a CD or ext hard disk then run "Repair harddisk"
Now restart and then start iMovie to figure out if it starts to behave.
(If still problems: After re-installing QT6.5.2 I would run DiskWarrior™ and
after this TechTools™ and as a last resort the hardware test CD that came
with Your Mac)

Panasonic HDC-SD9 video import crashes iMovie
Everytime I try to import video from my Panasonic HDC-SD9 using iMovie it crashes the program.
A google search on the problem led me to installing the Quicktime plugin Perian 1.1 but this did nothing to help the issue.
Other people have recommended purchasing ShedWorx’s VoltaicHD Converter but I'd rather not have to purchase software to import video into a mac that just supposed to work with everything... additionally ShedWork's site said that Intel Macs should be able to import AVCHD files.
Anyone have any luck fixing this issue? Or know when Apple plans on supporting this camera?
Thanks in advance for any help, I appreciate it.

Here's a simple solution. Sell the cam and buy miniDV. -
FCP X crashes during import of iMovie events
Installed FCP X and tried to import my iMovie Event Library. Crashes every time I attempt this, although not always at the same point of the import, suggesting that it isn't related to the specific video files being imported (e.g. due to a corrupted file). Trashing the contents of the FCP X event folder doesn't help either.
Don't think this app is ready for real world use yet.

Hello
I am importing video and pics into Iphoto and the video plays in slow motion. Would importing in Imovie help or does it have something to do with the type of camera or file the video is in?It should. So they aren't shown in the Last Import smart album, right? Try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database, followed by Option #1 if needed.

Ive converted my video to imovie compatible format MPEG-4 so why won't the full length of it import into imovie? I cant record it using screen record either, the recording shows me clicking around and trying to record but after a split second of the desired footage shows it then cuts out to white and grey checkers. How can I convert it better or record it when playing off my screen please?
Do you have a backup that you can restore from? Your old hard drive seems to be the problem.

Import to iMovie from iPhoto QT Parse Error
It's been a while I didn't have any iMovie projects but had a few updates since then. Now, I discovered that I cannot import photos to iMovie (iMovie is 5.0.2, iPhoto is 6.0.6). After trying to trouble shoot for a while here is what I found out;
When I import photos to iPhoto, originals are stored in iPhotoLibrary\Originals\...\LibraryName\filename but files here are aliases only. Thumbnails are stored into iPhotoLibrary\Data\...\LibraryName\filename. When I want to import to iMovie, it requests to open iPhoto before I can see the library but tries to import from iPhotoLibrary\Originals\...\LibraryName\filename which are aliases. Therefore I get a QT parsing error. "... PICT5985.JPG” can’t be imported; QuickTime couldn’t parse it: -2048". I copied the original photos to iPhotoLibrary\Originals\...\LibraryName\filename overwriting the aliases and it worked.
Is there something I am missing? I couldn't remember and figured out if there is any way to set iPhoto to use originals or iMovie to look for the folder where the originals are located?
Thanks. In iPhoto's Preferences, under Advanced, there is an option to "copy files to iPhoto Library folder when importing to Library." If you have turned this option off, then your Originals folder contains only alias files pointing to the location where you have saved your photos. If you check that box, then future imports will be saved into the iPhoto Library folder, but it will do nothing to replace the existing alias files with the real thing.
If you want to convert your referenced library into a managed one, check out [AliasHerder|http://www.rorohiko.com/downloads.html]. I haven't tried it myself, but others here have reported success.
You can drag and drop files from anywhere into your iMovie project, and they should be imported. But to be able to import from iMovie's convenient Media Browser, you have to use iPhoto for your photos.
Something else is also wrong. This
When I want to import to iMovie, it requests to open iPhoto before I can see the library...
shouldn't happen. I haven't used an alias-based library, but I assume that it should work without you having to locate the source files. It sounds like iPhoto has lost the link to these files and is unable to send them to iMovie. In iPhoto, can you view these photos at full size and open them for editing? If not, that would support my theory.
One way iPhoto could have lost the location of your files would be if you moved or renamed them without using iPhoto. In that case, you'll have to put things back as they were. Or try replacing the alias files with the actual files. If you didn't tamper with iPhoto's files, you may have a damaged database file, which can result from a crash while iPhoto is writing to the database. You can try a rebuild. Hold down the Option and Command keys while launching iPhoto. Select the first 3 options in the dialog box, then rebuild.
One last question: Is there a reason why you are using iMovie 5 with iPhoto 6? Why not upgrade iMovie (and any other iLife '06 app) to match iPhoto? While I don't think that is causing your problem, it seems to be an extra variable with your setup.

Hello all
I'm scheduled to work with a friend this week; I'm going to help him make a simple audition DVD. I promised him I had the necessary equipment and such.
I was importing from the webcam using iMovie. If I can't use my external mic to record for the video, there is more involved in the editing process. I was hoping to record the video and audio into one package. I'm using the built-in FaceTime webcam on my macbook pro and a ZoomH1 on usb.
I've tried changing the audio in system preferences: input to H1. This works when recording with audacity or anything else. I even changed the input on FaceTime to H1. There aren't any preferences I can find in iMovie to change the input for importing video directly from the webcam.
How do I change the audio input for direct import on iMovie?
OR
Is there something else I can do to have HD video and HQ audio captured in one video file on my macbook pro?
I suppose I can record the video and audio separately but that is usually much more involved. This is why I got this usb microphone lol.
Thanks in advance,
-SethI just found using QuickTime Player to record a movie works great. I can easily change the audio input. iMovie is silly. lol
If I missed anything let me know.
Thanks

I have iMovie 09 and I just bought Final Cut Express. I created a simple movie in iMovie 09. I exported it as Final Cut XML. I imported the file in Final Cut Express. All as described in the Final Cut Express video tutorial.
However, I just get a "Media Offline" message... the import doesn't seem to work. I have tried this multiple times.
I have tried reconnecting the files, but it doesn't seem to let me select the right file...
Very confused... Is there anything I can do to get this working? (Preferably without having to attempt to reconnect the files)
Thanks!Thanks Tom.
In the video tutorial it appears as if you do not need to reconnect the files. I assumed that this would only be necessary if the files had been moved, but I didn't move them. I thought that the XML files would include directions to where the video clips are stored. Do you have to manually point to the files every time that you import from iMovie?
My iMovie project is a screen recording. It consists of several .mov files. I have tried removing all the titles / fades / transitions but it still cannot see the video clips when I import them to FCE.
The movie's about 8 minutes long. It's in widescreen. I haven't changed any settings. -
Importing from iMovie HD project
I bought a new iMac and i'm importing in iMovie 08 a project from iMovie06.
But i have 2 problems: first not all the clips are imported and second that the clips that are imported are not in the same order of the original projct.
Does anyone have any ideas? If in iMovie 06 have a project with 20 clip in iMovie 08 found less clips but everyone is complete. Entire clips are missing.
1) If you are counting "rendered" clips in the "Project.PKG > Media folder," they are not included in the import. You will have o move them manually if you want them.
2) If you are counting clips included in the source bin, then I don't know if they are supposed to import or not. (I.e., I don't use the built-in HD import option in iMovie '08.) You can check and see if these are your missing clips. if they are, then add them to the HD project before import and see if they are imported to iMovie '08. If they aren't, then you may need to send a feedback to Apple regarding this issue.
And the order in which are imported is not the same as in the original project
Editing and rendering in an iMovie HD project will change the clip names which, in turn, may re-order the files as the finder "sees" them. (I.e., they are ordered alphabetically in the project media folder.) So, if they are imported in alphabetical order, they would be out of their original "source" or timeline order. -
Importing from iMovie 06, lose capture dates
When I import old iMovie 06 movies, the capture dates gets lost. Here is one of the original clips in iMovie 06:
However, after importing in iMovie 11, the capture dates are lost. I tried many variations, like import the iMovie 06 project, or cd to the *.iMovieProject directory and import the actual clips, etc.
Now, good iMovie11 clips have the capture date imbedded in the file name (as in clip-2010-03-14 hh;mm;ss.dv). However, the ones imported from iMovie 06 end up in iMovie 11 with simple names such as clip55.dv. So it's not surprising I cannot see the capture dates in iMovie 11.
So I looked inside the *.iMovieProject directory hoping to find the capture dates either in the file name or in a plist, but I couldn't (nothing in the plists below)
... Jan 23 2010 Cache/Thumbnails.plist
... Jan 23 2010 Cache/Timeline Movie Data.plist
... Jan 23 2010 Cache/Timeline Movie.mov
... Nov 8 2009 Media/Clip55.dv
etc
Finally, I opened Clip55.dv in QuickTime and looked at MovieInspector, but I could not see any capture date (similar to exif in jpegs).
So obviously I missed them. My question is where in the iMovie 06 project can I find them? If accessible, I can write a script to fix the clips imported in iMovie11 by changing their names. I tried it manually, and it worked.
Thanks in advanceHi - Couple of things.
Click on the offending clip that you imported from iMovie in your FCP Bin and type Command + 9 to see the item properties. Either report those item properties, or if easier, take a screen shot of the item properties and post that.
Then click any where on the timeline you are having trouble with and type Command + 0 (Zero) to see the sequence settings. Either report those settings or take a screen shot of the Sequence Settings window and post that.
In order for FCP to use the video without rendering, both the items properties of the source clip, and the sequence settings must match - and both must be within standard production parameters.
Also, you can click on the source clip in the FCP Bin, then control-click on the clip and select Reveal in Finder from the drop down menu. Once that file is revealed, open it in Quicktime 7 and see if if plays correctly there.
Hope this helps.

Older DV Tapes Will Not Play or Import Into iMovie
I have a lot of DV tapes shot ten years ago on a JVC camcorder that I want to import into iMovie.
I have a new Canon Vixia hv 30 and I'm assuming these older mini DV tapes are compatible because these old tapes play fine in the camcorder itself, and also on my TV, but when I try to import them into iMovie, they do not display in the iMovie import window. However, new tapes shot recently with the new hv 30 display and import just fine.
Is there a problem with the old tapes being incompatible in some way I'm not understanding?
Dino1956 answered a similar problem in 2008:
*iMovie Camcorder Import Fix*
*Connect your camera. put it in 'play' mode (sometimes also called vcr). start up imovie (hd or 08; both work, but i use HD). go to the blue 'import' screen. it should just say 'camera connected'.*
*Now comes the trick. don't click import, but instead put your camera in 'record' mode. you should now see whatever it is that your aiming the camera at on your computer screen.*
*QUICKLY put your camera back in play mode. again very quickly press the 'play' button, either on the imovie import screen or on your camera. your DV tape will start to play back.*
*-On my computer, the video now suddenly shows up in imovie! You can now click the 'import' button in imovie, and imovie will start importing the tape in realtime. This is a bit slower than the normal import method, but hey, at least you can now get your video into imovie!*
...but this solution doesn't work for me. I cannot "quickly" click the Play button on the camera monitor or in the iMovie window after switching from record to Play on the camera because there is a 5 second time lag on both the camera's monitor and in the iMovie window while the iMovie screen/camera monitor switches over from Record to Play.
Is there any way I can get older DV footage into iMovie from my Vixia hv 30? My resources are at a very low ebb right now.I found a clue on the www.hv20 website: Old DV tapes recorded before HDV...you need to go into the hv 30 menu and select "DV" rather than "HDV", then the video shows up in the iMovie import screen and imports easily.

my situation:
my MBP is running two drives: a 160gb SSD that has my home folder, OS and all apps, and a 500gb HDD for data and non-essential software.
the HDD used to be my OS and home folder, so I used to run iMovie off it. but after installing the SSD, i am now running Lion off it, and it is now my new home folder.
so my iMovie events are now marooned on my ex-home folder, on what is now my HDD data drive.
I can import iMovie events no problem, as FCPX prompts for where the project files are. but FCPX doesn't prompt for the location of the iMovie events library, so how do i get those old iMovie events in?
i suppose i could copy all the events over to my SSD, then do the import, and then delete them. but that would take up a lot of space, and id rather not be copying and deleting so much data on the SSD.
is there any other way?It is definitely to your advantage to use the FCP command to Import your iMovie Events all at once. The reason is you will not double up on space. FCP will create a hard lingk to your events so you can access them in FCP without altering the iMovie Event in any way, but without doubling the space.
So there are several ways you could approach this.
1) If you are not using iMovie anymore, you could simply move them to the iMovie Event folder at the top level of either your old drive, or any attached drive that is formatted correctly (Mac OS Extended (journaled). This would likely break any iMovie Projects that you currently have, so it is not recommended if you will continue to use iMovie.
2) If iMovie is still working, you can use iMovie to move the Events to a proper drive. Click VIEW/EVENTS BY DISK in iMovie, and Command-Drag in iMovie to Movie Events to the drive you want while maintaining your project links. This option is probably only available to you if you have set up your old drive as your official Home directory.
3) As long as you set your "old" drive to be your Home Folder in OSX, you can just leave them where they are. OSX lets you have the Home folder on a different drive than your startup drive. This is not ususally recommended, but it is useful when you have an SSD. When I got my current Mac with an SSD, I moved my home folder to the internal hard drive but OSX and my Apps are on the SSD.
To do this, I followed the advice of longtime poster Pondini, who has a great website that walks you through this.
Here is a link.

Why do some AVI files not import into iMovie?
Some of my AVI video does not import into iMovie. When I try, it gives me a non-specific error message. Is there a way I can import it? Other AVI files import with no problem.
AVI is a container, not a format; the audio and video in an AVI may use any codec, and some codecs can't be used in Mac OS X. Installing Perian may help.

I had old 8mm movies converted to dvd. I then used "rip it" and imported to imovie. In the event library a complete person is shown on a clip. However, when I move that clip to the project the tops of peoples heads are missing in the playback. I have used standard (4:3) because the cut is lower in widescreen. How do I fix this problem?
Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think? -
Certain mp4 files are not importing into iMovie
I downloaded various files from the video page at a blog website [ http://www.911blogger.com/ ]; they're mp4 QuickTime. They won't properly import into iMovie, and quickly return a "An Unknown Error Has Occured" message box.
This is confusing, especially since iMovie can make mp4 movies. And since mp4 is a QuickTime format -- and QuickTime is made by Apple, who also makes iMovie.
It doesn't matter what size of file; none import. I asked the guys who own/operate the blog website if they put any special locking features on their video file downloads from their podcasts, and they said they (paraphrasing) "didn't do anything except use an iPod video converter" or something to that effect.
So, any idea's?I have QuickTime 7.1.1 installed, with a license for QuickTime Pro.
QuickTime Pro shouldn't affect the ability to import to iMovie. All QuickTime Pro does is enable certain movie editing commands in QuickTime Player. It doesn't add any codecs or new elements to QuickTime.
But third-party QuickTime codecs could certainly be affecting iMovie 6's ability to import a movie. If any are installed, they should be temporarily removed and the Mac restarted.
They are discussed here:

How does PSE 11 and iPhoto work together?
I am currently trialling PSE 11. I would prefer to keep iPhoto as my organiser while using PSE 11 as my editor. However, it appears that I have to create a separate PSE library meaning that the edits made in PSE will not be reflected in the iPhoto li
